Meet Tangipahoa - Kentwood

Kentwood, incorporated in 1891, and named after settler Amos Kent, is a beautiful area that encompasses acres of dairy and grain farms. Kentwood celebrates their roots and their favor-ite daughter, Britney Spears, at the Kentwood Histori-cal a n d C u l t u r a l Arts Museum. The memorabilia features a military exhibit to honor those who have served our country. Just south of Kentwood is the Camp Moore Civil War Museum. Originally a Confederate Training Facility, Camp Moore features a Civil War cemetery, a museum and Civil War reenactments throughout the year.

Page 9: 2010 Visitors Guide

Today, Camp Moore is a museum and is home to hundreds of artifacts. It has a genealogy library where visitors can research names of ances-tors or look up some little known fact in the library. Volunteers are eager to share their knowledge - help with a little research or recount the many stories of Camp Moore written and documented in letters and diaries. The weekend before Thanksgiving, every year, Camp Moore hosts a Civil War re enactment. Lawn chairs and blankets are strongly recommended to pro-vide comfort to the visitors watching the Union attacks on the camp - finally disabling it in 1864. All other times of the year, Camp Moore is open Tuesday - Sat-urday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last tour begins at 3 p.m.

Amite, incorporated in 1861, is the parish seat. Located in the center of Tangipahoa Parish, it is eas-ily accessible from any location within the area. Amite is well known for its oyster industry, dating back to 1949, and hosts the annual Oyster Festival each March. Downtown Amite is on the rebound with a number of quaint shops and unique stores. Just east of Amite is some of the prettiest rolling countryside you will ever see. Here you will find nurseries, horse and cattle pas-tures, the skeet club, Springview Country Club and the Sandy-hollowWildlife Management area. Amite lies at the cross roads of Highway 51 North and South and Highway 16 East and West. Interstate 55 is to the west just outside city limits. The Il-linois Central Railroad runs through the town with businesses and residences on either side. Everyone needs a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Amite offers an educational, enter-taining, and relaxing environment. The Tangipahoa Parish Fair and the Chamber of Commerce Bon Appetite Festival both held in Octo-ber are among the social functions which can be enjoyed by old and young alike. A Christmas parade is a great way to end the year.

“Little Italy” Traditional Italian bread, cookies and cuisine can be found in Independence. A visitor knows where Indepen-dence is by the Italian colors (red, green and white) painted on the town’s water tower and the small statuette of the town’s patron saint, St. Joseph, located in the park toward the center of town.

Sicilian immigrants first came to Independence in the late 1880s to work as strawberry labor-ers. Many began as pickers work-ing for $1.50 to $1.75 per day, and within a year saved enough from their wages to buy their own farms. Independence Italians continued to operate strawberry farms, and by 1905, Independence had become Louisiana’s primary shipping cen-ter for strawberries. It wasn’t long before the Italians invested in busi-nesses, small factories and a small electric power plant. As the popula-tion and cultures of Tangipahoa grew, Independence Italians maintained many of their homeland traditions. The newest addition to the growing list of events held within this his-toric community is the Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival. Held in March, this festival focuses on the heritage of the first settlers in the town of Independence and attempts to engage the audience through fun, revelry, and time honored customs. Replacing the Italian festival, which relocated to Tickfaw in 2009, the Sicilian Heritage Festival embraces this history of the region while incorporating modern amenities associated with Louisiana’s greatest festivals.

Hammond is the cultural center for Tangipahoa Par-ish. Located at the cross-roads of I-12 and I-55, Hammond is home to a number of fine restaurants, several modern shopping centers and many beautiful parks for the entire family. The city is named for Peter Hammond, a Swedish native who settled here in the 1820’s. Peter bought large tracts of pine forests and began making kegs and barrels from pine trees, using the resin for pro-cessing turpentine, tar, pitch and retarred coal, which he sold. The Hammond homestead was located on East Charles Street and to-day, a massive oak tree known as the Peter Hammond Oak marks the burial place of Peter Hammond and his family. The estab-lishment of Hammond brought people from all over the country. Many would come to escape the harsh northern winters. Educa-tors were drawn to Southeastern Louisiana University to teach. Southeastern Louisiana University, which is one of the fastest growing universities in the nation, is also located in Hammond. As a major university, Southeastern offers a full slate of theatrical and musical performances each year, and Southeastern provides the local sports enthusiasts with some of the best NCAA collegiate sporting events. The arts come alive throughout the year in Hammond. From the month-long Fan-fare celebration held each October to local stage productions, Hammond is quickly becoming the art center of the parish.

Ponchatoula, the oldest incorporated city in the parish, is host of the popular Strawberry Festival every Spring. Ponchatoula is also known around the country as America’s Antique City, with numerous art, antique and handcrafted items in the many restored old buildings in the downtown area.

Stroll leisurely down the historic main street of Ponchatoula and rediscover where the past meets the present and life is a little more laid back. From the moment you arrive, merchants greet you with a huge grin and a friendly “hey y’all”. Enjoy a steaming cup of coffee at one of the many cafes and restaurants. Find that ‘one of a kind’ item that would look perfect in your home at any of the antique shops. Play dress up at one of the upscale boutiques located in this four block area known as America’s Antique City. Warm smiles abound as you meander through this step back in time. www.ponchatoulachamber.com
