As I write this message, it is the time between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I want all of you to know that I have been appreciative of the responses I have received regarding my Erev Rosh Hashanah sermon in which I expressed my thoughts regarding Park51, the proposed construction of the NYC Mosque and center. I, of course, enjoyed hearing from the many you who agreed with me, but more so, I was pleased by those who stated opinions other than mine. I am glad I inspired discussion within our Temple regarding this

topic that has absorbed so many conversations, and newspaper and television headlines over the last few months.

Even though Yom Kippur is yet to happen, I and the congregation do want to express our sincere thanks to everyone who made these high holydays the special and spiritually beautiful days that they were.

A thank you to…

Donna Paskin and her dog Miss Mollie, Stephanie Plewka, Cantor Ilana and her children Hannah and Liora, Jan Randhare, Ellie and Erin Rudner, Paula and Rachel Schneelbalg, Marilyn Stahl, and Shaindy and Jack Ullman all of whom joined the Rabbi in bringing Rosh Hashanah to the residents of five nursing and assisted living facilities;

And a special thank you to our devoted office staff of Karen and Kim, and our custodian Tom. Without them most of what goes on here at B'nai Israel could not go as well as it does.

And finally a special thank you to all our readers at services, those who shared Jewish life stories on Yom Kippur, those who donated food to our Out-Reach Program, and those who donated food for our Break-fast.

I say thank you to each and every one mentioned because your devotion to B’nai Israel is what makes our Temple the very special place that it is.

There is no question we are doing the right thing at B’nai Israel. When a resident of one of the homes said to me: “I thank you for being here today because you made me feel as if I was back in my Jewish home”, I knew that in spite of how tired I felt at the end of the long second day of Rosh Hashanah it was certainly a wonderful day. At B’nai Israel we do much for others in our congregation and in the community while at the same time doing so much for ourselves.

A Special request Class: an Introduction to Kabbalah On Thursday night October 7th at 8 pm the Rabbi will hold a special class that many of you have requested: Intro to Kabbalah. This class will present the basic kabbalistic principles as laid down by the masters and show how they can be applied to your life. Please RSVP to the office. Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program is held on Monday nights at 8 pm. The class, taught by the Rabbi and Yaffa Lecce, will begin by teaching the Hebrew alphabet. By June, all students will become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, reading from the Torah. No prior Hebrew knowledge is necessary. The class will be on Monday nights until June. Beginner Hebrew for Adults is also held on Monday nights at 8 pm. Within six months all students will be able to read any Hebrew text. Why not be able to read the four Questions at this year’s Passover Seder and make your children proud of you? Torah at Panera will meet on Saturday mornings October 9 and 23rd at 10 am. This class has proved to be a real winner, attracting many students to Panera’s restaurant on Sunrise Highway in Sayville enjoying Torah study while eating a good breakfast. The Rabbi will begin a class on teaching the Books of the Bible for Adults. The Jewish people are the people of the book so if you are a part of this people you should learn about this book. Did you know it is called Tanach in Hebrew and what this word stands for? Did you know there are thirty-nine books to the Hebrew Bible? During the course of the year the Rabbi will teach selected readings from the Bible’s three main sections beginning with the Book of Joshua. The books will be studied from a spiritual as well as historical and literary perspectives. The class will be held on the fourth Thursday of the month beginning on October 28th at 8 pm. The Rabbi is continuing his special Adult Education Self-study Program. This year the program will be "the Great Works of Jewish Religious Life". The class will look at the Mishnah, Midrash, Talmud, Legal Codes, Respona Literature, and the Zohar. The first introductory class will be held on Thursday night November 4th at 8 pm. The Rabbi will hold Meditation Moments for peace and healing on the first Friday night of the month after services. If there are other programs you would like to see in the Temple, please write or speak with Rabbi. Please rsvp the office so the Rabbi knows to expect you at the above mentioned programs.

President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

The High Holy Days have passed and while it’s too soon to know the financial impact of ticket sales and our Kol Nidre appeal for donations, it is never too soon to give thanks where thanks are due. To Temple members Dan Scolnick, our “Lawn Man” and Paul Haines for helping to keep our grounds in shape and Marc Gordon of Concord Cleaners for doing the same to our choir robes, many thanks. Ditto to Nat Ozarin and Barry Wilans who skillfully mounted our new donor wall at a significant cost savings to the Temple. There may be other members out there with particular skills or capabilities who can contribute to B’nai Israel in non-monetary ways. If so, please let us know how you can help now or in the future. Thanks too to Jason Feuer, for the stirring notes of his shofar in his first year as our full time “ba’al tokea.“ As always, thank you to Cantor Ilana, Roselyn Selmanoff , Ellie Zayas and the Choir for their beautiful Holy Day music. And to Terri Randall and the Ritual Committee who made sure that everything was just as it should be. Thanks to the “break fast” committee for its important work on Yom Kippur. A sincere thank you to Judy Moss for all she does, not just now, but all year long, and to Rabbi Moss, who never fails to thank others, but is truly the key to a successful High Holy Day season. (Thirty nine years and counting!)

In many ways, a new year starts now and it’s a good time to make a resolution to become more involved in Temple life. There are many ways to do that and it’s

hard to believe that there isn’t something for everyone. Our Senior Youth Group is becoming active once again. Contact Howard Gottesman or Ira Rosenfeld at [email protected] or [email protected] for current information and a schedule of events. If you sing, our choir is a great opportunity. Singers are welcome for our November Interfaith Service, which might be a good way to give it a try without a long term commitment. Rabbi’s classes are just getting under way, are always of interest, and free to member families.

We have had several requests to start a group for women who are available to meet for various activities weekday mornings or afternoons. If you are interested, contact Dot Lewis at 589-3717, Barbara Abrams at 224-1445 or leave your name in the office for a call-back.

With new members joining the Temple each month, this is a good time to consider becoming part of a new havurah, a group of Temple members who share common ties and meet socially according to their own schedule and interests. If you have an interest in joining a “hav” leave your name with the office and we’ll get back to you with further information.

Last, but not least, how about Shabbat services from time to time? The schedule is on page two of the bulletin. You were with us for the High Holy Days. Why not on a Friday night? Try it. You just might like it. I hope to see you soon.

Joel

Ritual Committee  Rejoicing with the Torah!

I remember my first year of Hebrew school at B’nai Israel. I was in 4th grade and classes were held at Dowling College. My parents had joined the congregation, which was in a house on Idle Hour Boulevard. Rabbi was taller than I was then (or I was much shorter!) and I was excited and apprehensive at the same time. As a new student to the religious school, I was taken by my parents to the Shabbat service on Simchat Torah, where I received my very own Torah. I kept it on my shelf in my bedroom. Sometimes I would roll the whole thing open to show a friend or just to admire. The thing was, the Torah belonged to me. When sitting in the audience and watching Rabbi read from the Torah, I was removed from things. Now, I had a Torah of my own. As my own children began religious school years ago, they too received their very own Torahs. They are displayed with mine in our family room wall unit. Now the Torah belongs to them also! I think that it is important, whether it is a special day like Simchat Torah or any day that we are blessed to wake up and see the beautiful world that Adonai has created, that we remember that the Torah belongs to each of us. The teachings are for each of us to explore and apply to our own life’s journey. The Torah belongs to all of us as well as each of us! I hope to see your family on Simchat Torah as we rejoice in the Torah and celebrate our students!

Quick-and-Easy Torah Sugar Cookies Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for at least ½ hour. Open a roll of ready-made sugar cookie dough (found in the refrigerator section of most supermarkets) that has been chilled for 1 to 2 hours. Once chilled, roll dough to desired thickness and cut into shapes, such as a Torah or the letters of the alef-bet…you decide! Use colored sprinkles, sugar crystals or even chocolate chips to decorate the shapes, making sure not to press the toppings down too much, so the cookies don’t burn. Bake cookies on an ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes or until just beginning to turn brown around the edges.

From my home to yours with Shalom,

Terri Randall Ritual Chairperson.

Our Next meeting will be on Monday November 1 at 8pm

Please watch for more information coming soon!

We are working on a bowling night, a get together with another temples youth group, stuffing of bears and distributing them with the sisterhood, helping to run a service at Temple, helping at the Purim carnival, getting involved with NFTY, getting T-shirts and in general growing our senior youth group in our temple.

If you are interested in any of these possible activities or have questions about Youth Group, please contact Howard Gottesman or Ira Rosenfeld at [email protected] or [email protected].

Dear Sisterhood Members, Friends, and Family,

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of a walk; it describes the progress we're making together in the fight against breast cancer. Nothing can describe the hope that is inspired by walking with others who share a passion for ending this disease. Because nearly everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way, hope for a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays starts with us. We've decided to show our support and make a difference by walking as a team in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.

Saving lives from breast cancer starts one team, one walker, and one dollar at a time. Join us Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Jones Beach for the 5 mile walk and together we will create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.

Please send this note to your friends and family and ask them to sponsor you on our team page, B'nai Israel Sisterhood. Also, don't forget to make a donation yourself to get us started.

We are ordering T-shirts for $15. If you would like one, please RSVP to [email protected]. If you are walking RSVP and Fran or I will send you meeting instructions as we get closer to the walk.

14

We hope everyone had a Happy and Healthy New Year. It was fun seeing everyone at our annual kickoff sweet and greet. As always it’s great to see familiar faces but even better seeing new ones! The programming committee worked diligently over the summer to prepare for this year’s schedule. So come on down, join in and have some fun. Our yearly participation in the Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk is Sunday 10/17/10. Please join us and if you can’t, sign up and support us Web site - Makingstrides.acsevents.org/longisland. Our team is B’nai Israel Sisterhood. Next up is our Paid-up membership dinner on Oct. 19th. Looking forward to these events please come and join us. Rita and Phyllis

Blood Drive I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to those of you who helped plan and set up, and to those who stayed throughout the past blood drives to help. And, a special thanks to those of you who came to donate blood. As you all know, there is a constant need for blood, especially in the summer months, and we hope that you all try to donate as often as you are able. If you donate at a location other than our Temple, please use our donor site number 62531 so that B'nai Israel can get credit for the donation.

The next blood drive at our Temple is scheduled for

Monday, November 1, 2010 from 3PM-9PM.

Please continue to show your generosity and donate your time and your blood. Thanks- Your Sister- Rita D.-631 664-7968

Donations  We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further information.
