Monthly Newsletter

This is for all the “snowbirds” who do not have a computer to read the monthly newsletter that is

It was brought to me as a question whether I could mail a newsletter to those who cannot access

the newsletter on line. After this conversation I had my husband go to the post office to see how

much it would cost to mail out a monthly newsletter and depending on the weight (#pages) it would

cost anywhere from $.61 and up and with the envelope the total fee would be $.75 per month if

anyone is interested.

So if you would like for me to mail you out a copy, just forward to me the address of where it is to

be mailed to, which months you want sent and the advance $.75 monthly fee for however many

months you want. I will give you a receipt for this and then make sure you receive your

newsletter for the months requested.

Safe travels for those who are heading North. We will miss you and hurry back! Before you leave, please fill out the information sheet so that we will be able to contact you or your

family in case of an emergency.

Thanks to the many, many volunteers who put many thoughts, hours and work on our 1st game night held

on March 17th.

Thanks to the ticket sellers, $1000.00 worth of gift certificates were purchased. “Thank you!” We had 46

gift certificates won and Donna Elder won the largest worth $110.00.

Walkers

Just another note, be very careful when walking past any home whether it be day or

night. When a resident is backing out of their driveway, they have blind spots in the

car and don’t always see the “walker” as they pull out of their driveways, even when

looking both ways before pulling out. Please be cautious of this as you walk pass

their driveway!!!!!

This is also note worthy when walking or driving past some of the corners such as

Mesquite & Bronco and also the streets leading into Brahman and the corner of Bronco

and Maverick. It is hard to see if another person or car is coming in any of the

directions and it is amazing no one has been hurt or hit by a vehicle at these corners.

The other dangerous place is pulling out of the parking spaces in front of the clubhouse

to either side of Prairie or Tumbleweed traffic. There have been some near misses with

either cars or pedestrians almost getting hit.

Please be careful! The scooters are another dangerous vehicle with sometimes no

proper lighting on them. Also they should stay on the right side of the road and be

careful around the clubhouse with cars pulling out of the clubhouse. All should have a

backup mirror to see if there is any traffic behind before crossing on the road.

PRACTICE SAFETY!!!!!!

Women’s Club

45 ladies met in the clubhouse for their monthly meeting on March 2nd. The February minutes

and treasurers report were read and approved and each committee gave a report.

The Charity committee presented a speaker from East Pasco YMCA with a donation of $100.00

and a check was also given to the “Treats for Troops” for $200.00. A guest speaker from

Habitat for Humanity will be our guest speaker next month.

The Chili Supper was touted as a great success and on April 10th there will be a “thank you”

celebration for all of the workers. GREAT JOB BY ALL!

The Southfork Line Dancers gave a demonstration and even had some interaction from the

membership up on the floor. It was just great and enjoyed by all present at the meeting.

We will meet again on April 6th at 9am and I look forward to seeing you all there!

There are surprises in your life that you never expect and on March 7th, the residents of

Southfork not only surprised me, but overwhelmed me with such generosity.

The loss of my mother made for some last minute travel plans and these funds received were

greatly appreciated to cover those expenses.

ANOTHER “SCOOP” BY SOUTHFORK'S ROVING REPORTER

A few weeks ago a resident took a nasty fall coming out the clubhouse and her injuries required being taken to

the emergency room for treatment. Right after this accident, well meaning friends spent valuable time

contacting the victims husband who came to the clubhouse and then transported the victim to the hospital.

Because of that incident it is time to remind everyone in the park to be aware of the emergency telephone

located in the walkway between the clubhouse and the swimming pool. It is located in a red box under the

porch between the clubhouse and the pool fence and is a direct line to emergency services (911). Just last

summer one of our residents became faint during a visit to the pool. Several residents saw him fall and had the

forethought to use that telephone to call emergency medical personnel. Paramedics came with an ambulance

and arrived on the scene less than three minutes after the call was placed.

Luckily the local emergency medical services and fire department personnel are located on Centennial Road just

a short distance from Southfork and can provide extremely fast service to Southfork in the event of a medical

emergency or fire and rescue (DIAL 911). Quick response on their part saved adjacent vehicles during a recent

fire in our RV storage area.

Just for residents information, our new Park General Manager has taken the suggestion of the Association Board

and replaced the life preservers at the pool.

Some residents may not know that there is also a life saving pole with a long handle that can be used to rescue

anyone in the pool that is in trouble. The pole is located right below the awning of the cabana and is easily

accessible to aid anyone in distress in the pool.

Also there are fire extinguishers located on the south wall and the north wall inside the clubhouse and there is

one located under the awning of the cabana adjacent to the men's restroom door (pull the pin, squeeze the

handle and aim at the base of the fire). There are also two first aid kits for residents use. One is located under

the awning of the cabana and the other is located in the kitchen of the clubhouse. (Direct pressure applied to a

cut with a sterile pad can help stop most bleeding until medical personnel arrive). Management only asks that if

you use any items out of the first aid kits that you notify the office so that any used

items can be replaced.

This roving reporter is on the move covering the park so if it's newsworthy you just

might make the headlines of the Southfork Newsletter!!

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

* Accept that some days you're the pigeon,

And some days you're the statue.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet,

Just in case you have to eat them.

* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again,

It was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time,

Because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can't dance well.

Just get up and dance.

* Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything's coming your way,

You're in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you.

The more you have, the longer you live.

* You may be only one person in the world,

But you may also be the world to one person.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

* We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull.

Some have weird names, and all are different colours, but they all have to live in the same box.

*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Southfork Men’s Club

The Men’s Club met on March 3rd and the contest of the “Brothers of the Bush” was held with following

results:

Pete Logoyda & Chuck Stowe were awarded honorable mention for presenting Amish style beards of the

chin strap tradition.

Thank you to all the wives for putting up with their husbands for over 2 months of preparation for this great

fun event.

The Baseball trip to Lakeland was attended by 24 people and everyone had a great day and a wonderful

time.

Our next meeting will be on April 7th @9am, plan to be on board.

Take me out to the ball game!!!!!

On February 28, 2011, we had a group of 22 people from Southfork attend a baseball

game in Lakeland, Fl. Transportation to Joker Marchant Stadium was accomplished by

car pool.

The Detroit Tigers hosted the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers won the game 6

to 2. There were 23 hits which made the game very interesting and we had great seats in

the shade above home plate. Some of the group won ten small pizzas and shared them

with the rest of the group.

I believe everyone had a good time from all the positive comments.

Restaurant of the month

I usually spend some time thinking about how to start each review so that you will be excited about

trying these restaurants. I’m going to “skip to the chase” and immediately rave about this new eatery

that just opened this year. “The Habit Forming Cure for Hunger” with all the over sized sandwiches at

this new pub & grille in Dade City, in our own back yard.

The names on the menu may scare you such as (Pre-OP’s) which are the appetizers, (Wellness Center)

which are the salads, (Doc’s Morgue) which are the sandwiches, (Code Blue) which are the fish platters,

(Heart Stopping Burgers) which are ½ pound burgers with Velveeta cheese with many more toppings,

(Artery Clogging Wings) which are wings done any way you like them, (Post-Ops) the desserts.

Your sides that come with the meal is: your choice of, waffle fries, large onion rings, kettle chips or Cole

slaw and a Kosher dill pickle spear.

Average price of sandwiches/dinners range from 6.99 to 9.99.

Besides food they have a large long bar, 2 pool tables, TV’s on every wall and also out on the porch

where you can eat outdoors and they also have a WIFI available. They have TV’s with games on them

and so much more that I cannot remember.

It’s a sports bar atmosphere but dining is really big here for they are packed all the time which tells me

that this is the place to visit at least once.

They tell me that between 11am and 2pm it is always crowded, after 2 but before 5pm is a good time to

go. Friday night is usually very busy and on Saturday night is Karaoke night.

In the (Pain Management Department) they serve all sorts of Draft Beer, Bottled Beer and Wine. They

have a Doc’s Homemade Sangria garnished with fresh fruit.

So if you are looking for something different, give this place a try.

Scheduling of the Clubhouse

To schedule a function in the Clubhouse, you must reserve the hall with the Association President first.

In most case’s the scheduled Association events (such as bingo etc.) takes priority over private party

requests. Give at least 30 days to 2 months advance notice for any scheduling and don’t assume the

date is available.

The same thing goes for the Pavillion and the Pool area.

Call the President, Dot Cady for a form that must be filled out for all reservations. This is a must, for just

in cases, of damage etc. and the host/ party holding the event will be held responsible and it must be

noted if alcohol beverages will be used.

BLOODMOBILE

Bloodmobile will be here at Southfork on Monday, April 4th

form 9 to 12 noon.

Even if you are on medication, come up anyway because there have been some restrictions lifted on

whom may now give blood.

Blood is really needed bad and they can use your help!

The wee folks from the Kelly green hills of Southfork, in the county of Pasco have been clammerin’ for

something other than dances and shows to entertain their souls. So the President of the Clan, Lassy Dot

Cady, planned a St Patricks celebration like no other to amuse the masses.

Several committeemen sold tiny passes in advance and the proceeds from the spendin’ of that green

were used to purchase trinkets and certificates for gifts from the local merchants of the City of Dade and

the Village of Zephyrhills.

On St Paddys day eve, at the hour of seven, 125 of Southforks hardiest clansmen and their bonnie lasses

descended from the hamlet to meet in the club house for the beginnin’ o’ the festivities.

After comin’ thru the gate the hearty revelers were handed a sack full of tickets to use as token’s for the

playin’ of a wheel of fortune, fast paced bingo, craps, black jack, a roulette wheel and many other games

of chance. Each wager cost a ticket and winners were awarded prizes of more tickets. Every 15 minutes

there was a name drawn from the Pot o Gold and winner was given a certificate of $25 for a service

from one of the vendors. At the end of evenin’, winners holdin’ tickets were asked to put their winnin’

tickets into 10 buckets with the names of the businesses where the gift certificates had been bought

(favorite restaurants.) At the hour of 9 and a half (9:30pm) the games were halted, and the names were

drawn for thirty prizes of $25 each, one prize worth $35 and one grand prize havin’ a total worth of

$110.00.

It took the combined efforts of 25 committee persons to bring this party to the end of the rainbow for

the “Pot O’ Gold” evening. Twelve pizzas and a cart full of other snacks fed the hearty masses during the

evening .Jus’ so you be a knowin’, no Leprechans were harmed and no laws of the great County of Pasco

were broken during the havin’ of this event!!!!

Recipe of the Month

Scalloped Corn

Ingredients:

• Nonstick cooking spray

• 1 cup chopped onion (1 large)

• 1 cup chopped green or red sweet pepper

• 2 tablespoons butter or margarine

• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

• 2 cups reduced-fat milk

• 2 slightly beaten eggs

• 2 16-ounce packages frozen whole kernel corn, thawed and drained

• 2 cups soft bread crumbs

• 3/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Directions

1. Lightly coat a 2-quart rectangular baking dish with cooking spray; set aside. In a medium saucepan cook onion and sweet pepper in 4 teaspoons of the butter about 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in flour until vegetables are coated. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly; remove from heat and set aside.

2. In a large bowl stir together the eggs, thawed corn, 1 cup of the bread crumbs, the salt, and pepper. Stir in the thickened mixture. Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish. In a small saucepan melt the remaining butter. Stir in the remaining bread crumbs to coat. Sprinkle over corn mixture.

3. Bake, uncovered, in a 325 degree F oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until center appears just set. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Makes 12 servings.

RECIPE: RESTAURANT STYLE CHEESE BISCUITS INGREDIENTS:

1 teaspoon garlic salt or powder 1 tablespoon parsley flakes 1 teaspoon Italian seasonings 2 cups Bisquick 1/2 cup cold water (or gingerale) 3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated 1/2 c Butter DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mix Bisquick, water and cheese. Drop by large spoonfuls onto greased baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes. After baking, (while hot) brush on melted butter or margarine mixed with garlic powder, parsley flakes and Italian seasoning (a little seasoning goes a long

way.) Serve hot. YIELD: 12 biscuits Categories: Breads

Snowbirds reminder

Did you remember to ask someone to take care of your home such as the weeding etc. while you are up

North for the summer? You need to hire someone now before it gets to late and your weeds are not

overgrown during the summer months!

Also, it might be a good idea to give a trust worthy neighbor or friend your house key to check the

house at least once a month to make sure that you have no water leaks etc. This trustworthy friend

should have your northern phone number and another phone number of a family member etc. in case

they can not reach you in an emergency.

Remember in the summer months we may have some major storms or hurricanes (something we don’t

even want to think about) and your house will need to be checked for leaks coming from the roof or

other areas.

We do have people available (for a small fee) who can keep a schedule of maintaining your home all

summer or until you are ready to return to Southfork. So again, its just a reminder so that all the homes

are kept looking good while you are away.

~ The Legend of the Pussy Willow ~

Many springtimes ago, according to an old Polish

legend, tiny kittens had been chasing butterflies at

the river's edge and fell in. The mother cat, helpless to

save them, started crying. The willows at the river's

edge swept their long graceful branches into

the water - the kittens gripped on tightly to the

branches and were rescued.

Each springtime since, goes the legend, willow

branches sprout tiny fur-like buds where the tiny kittens once clung.

ODE TO A GOOD SOUTHFORK SAMARITAN

Our roving reporter recently noticed that some good Samaritan in

Southfork has recently painted the park bench located down in the

retention pond. The metal bench had become quite rusty but some

considerate person took the time and made the effort to paint that

old bench.

Many people have been seen spending time sitting on that bench each day, some just walking their

dogs, some whiling away their time in the early morning or someone just reflecting on natures beauty

by watching a sunset from one of the quietest locations in Southfork.

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!!!!!!!!!

EMERGENCY’S IN SOUTHFORK

Recently we have had a couple of situations where next of kin had

to be notified and there were no contact names to be found and it

was only by accident that a close neighbor had some information.

In this newsletter, on the next page, is a form that should be filled out for information in case of need

for family or relatives contact numbers, so that they can be notified in emergencies. This form is kept

on file for emergency purpose’s only and the office does not always have this information.

A lot of the residents never want to give up this personal information to the office so we as a board

thought it a need that one is kept up to date. This information is not shared with anyone and is only

used in extreme cases of emergencies where families etc. must be notified immediately.

It is up to you as an individual whether you want anyone to be notified in any of the above scenerios, so

think about who you would want to be notified in any emergency and please remit on the included

form. Thank you!!

Yarn Hookers

The Yarn Hookers have decided not to be meeting during the summer

months and will convene on the 1st

Thursday in October which is the 6th

@

6:30pm.

So starting in March through the end of September there will be no weekly

gathering and we will continue to work on our Lap Quilts etc that we are making for the local nursing

homes.

To all you knitters and crocheters, if you have anything that you would like to donate to the nursing

homes in the line of crafts such as quilts, lap quilts, sweaters etc. we will deliver them for you and you

can contact, Phyllis Grossi in the Fall.

We received a Thank You letter from the Royal Oaks Nursing Home thanking us for all the Lap Quilts we

have donated to the patients and they are so pleased that we thought of them. It is overwhelming to

hear the gratitude and it makes us fell really glad to have helped out in some way especially to those

who have no families etc.

This letter is being sent to all the residents that we do not have any emergency backup information for, in

case of a home being destroyed by some disaster. Try to use a contact not living here in the park in case

they are in the same situation. This also can be used if any other emergency occurs.

This information will not be shared and will be kept by only the board.

Here are a few questions we would like to ask you and for you to think about:

� If your home was destroyed etc and you were either up North or on a vacation and the Park Manager

was not available, how and who would you like to contact you and keep you updated?

� What do you expect Southfork to do in your case?

� If a Medical emergency in your home, whom would you like to have contacted?

The Association is putting together this plan in case of disasters/emergencies hitting Southfork and below is

some of the information we will need to get in contact with you or family. So please take a few minutes to

2nd Birthday Toast to the “Bingo Machine”

After all the trials and tribulations and much controversy by some, the “Bingo Machine” has been in

operation for 2 years now and working beautiful.

On February 23rd, there was a birthday celebration to show how much we really appreciated this New

Board and Bingo Machine that was purchased by the bingo patrons with their weekly donations towards

the fundraising and with the help of Scott Heiler. This was a great way to say “thanks.”

Since September of last year the doors have been opened to outsiders for this weekly bingo game and

we now have steady patrons from Blue Jay who come weekly to play with us. They are a welcome

group and at this festive event everyone of them came with a large dish of food and offerings to help us

set up before the games started. They are a group we look forward to weekly and they have a great

time and of course they tease our “Bingo Phil” like the rest of us. We would miss them if they stopped

coming and they have become really good friends. We were told that they are so happy to be

welcomed into our community events and they are so thankful for such great neighbors as Southfork.

At each table there was a bottle of sparkling (non-alcoholic)bubbly.. There were 73 people in attendance

and for this festive occasion everyone brought some kind of finger food (4 tables full plus.) There was

enough food to feed the entire community and boy was it delicious. Before the games began everyone

got to go and fill up a plate of food and then at half time a donated (from table 1) decorated cake was

cut and again everyone got to eat again. Bright House came with gifts for everyone ( Bingo Dabbers and

refrigerator clips) and also door prizes. During intermission we had 5 games of nickel bingo and that was

also a lot of fun and some good winnings. If you like Bingo, come and join us on Wednesday evenings

and the doors open at 5:30pm and the bingo starts at 6:30pm.
