from The aThleTiC DireCTor

Bonnies Supporters,

Throughout the spring and summer, our Athletics Department has been filled with gratitude and satisfaction for the accomplish-ments of the past year as well as focused on our plan for the future.

The 2011-12 academic year, as this Annual Report eloquently details, was a year that will be remembered among the best in our history. Our women’s basketball team, of course, set so many records that it is challenging to list them all, but to me the most impressive was their 14-0 record in the Atlantic 10. It was gratifying to see so many Bonnies fans rally behind this team, from impressive support in the Reilly Center, to the A-10 Cham-pionship in Philadelphia, to the NCAA Tournament games in Tallahassee and Raleigh. I congratulate head coach Jim Crowley on being named the A-10 Coach of the Year and the ESPN.com National Coach of the Year. His persistence in growing the program with student-athletes who develop as play-ers, students and people is remarkable. Our players, especially seniors Jessica Jenkins, Megan Van Tatenhove, Armelia Horton and Jennie Ashton, deserve every accolade that they received.

Of course, March was also when our men’s basketball team made its three-day run to its first Atlantic 10 Championship, earning its way back into the NCAA Tournament. Andrew Nicholson, a model student-athlete, led us in every facet. He elevated his performances in critical games, especially the A-10 title game. Congratulations to Andrew in being selected 19th in the NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic – we know the future is bright for the first player with a physics degree ever chosen in the First Round of the NBA Draft. I also congratulate all of Andrew’s teammates and the coaching staff on the A-10 title. Our team became stronger as the season went on, and that is a credit to all of them. Like the women’s team, the support the men received in both Atlantic City and Nashville was amazing to see, but not the least bit surprising given the passion of Bona Nation.

If you have not already done so, I encourage you to purchase “A Legacy Defined,” the commemorative book on our basketball seasons. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Bonaventure Athletic Fund (BAF) to support future Bonnies. This book is full of captivating pictures by Olean resident and long-time Bonnies team photographer Craig Melvin and stories and reflections writ-ten by Bona alums Mike Vaccaro ’89 and Adrian Wojnarowski ’91 as well as many from our own staff.

This past spring, we announced contract extensions for both head basketball coaches, Jim Crowley and Mark Schmidt. The mutual, long-term commitment by St. Bonaventure’s administra-tion to Jim and Mark – and their dedication to us – is gratifying.

Our future is bright in part because of our recently-completed Athletics Strategic Plan. This maps a five-year course to strengthen our position in the Atlantic 10 and the NCAA. The vision in the Strategic Plan has steps we need to take in order to better position our teams to succeed, starting with improved facilities. Planning and fundraising is underway for the installation of artificial turf and lights on the soccer/lacrosse field as well as the softball field, and for a new women’s basketball locker room. We will begin to share more of the plan in the next year. We will also call on you to sup-port the plan and know that you will respond.

Thank you and go Bonnies!

The 2011-12 edition of the men’s basketball season came with the great-est of expectations. With perennial all-conference performer Andrew Nicholson returning for his senior season, this team felt that it had the ability to be something special. Nicholson would serve as the poster child for the slogan chosen to describe the men’s and women’s basket-ball seasons: Defining Our Legacy.

A 3-3 start that saw the team lose key reserve Marquise Simmons for the season and included a loss at home to Arkansas State put the hopes of this season in jeopardy. A visit to Big Four rival Buffalo was marked as one of the games that turned around the season for the Bonnies. Buffalo was coming off a dominating win over Dayton. The Bonnies went in there and battled before pulling away at the end for the victory.

Four days later, the Bonnies pushed No. 24/22 Illinois to the brink in its own gym on national television. Nicholson outdueled eventual lottery pick Meyers Leonard. Illinois in the end proved to be too much to handle. The following game, the Bonnies lost senior Michael Davenport for the season to a shoulder injury. All the expectations of the season seemed to be slipping away.

The team would now have to be led by Andrew with big help needing to come from newcomers and youth. Those players stepped up to the challenge. After a heartbreaking loss to N.C. State in Rochester, Andrew Nicholson came alive.

Nicholson went on to average 23.3 points and 11.5 rebounds over the final eight games in conference play to help his team secure a No. 4 seed and a bye in the Atlantic 10 Championship. He became the first player in Atlantic 10 history to earn four consecutive Player of the Week awards. He would be named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and named to the All-Defensive Team.

The story of this team was not written yet. Nicholson guided the Bonnies on an unprecedented three-day stretch during the A-10 Championship. After dispatching Saint Joseph’s and UMass, Nicholson dropped 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked eight shots and brought St. Bonaven-ture its first ever Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship with a win over perennial power Xavier. It is safe to say that after the early injuries and bad losses, few thought they would see this day. The Bonnies were dancing into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000.

The Bonnies earned a No. 14 seed and would face No. 3 seed Florida State in Nashville. Early on it was Nicholson showing why he was the A-10 Player of the Year. The Bonnies led the game most of the way, but the experience of Florida State prevailed in the end. While fans may have hoped for the win, being there was a realization of a dream for Bona Nation.

Andrew Nicholson graduated ranking second on the program’s all-time scoring list with 2,103 points, fourth all-time with 887 rebounds and sec-ond all-time with 244 blocked shots.

The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team set off on a journey during the 2011-12 season with one goal in mind: to make it to its first NCAA Tournament in program history.

A trip to No. 25 St. John’s to start off the season would be the first indicator of great-ness for this team. Trailing early, the Bonnies fought back and earned their first ever road win over a ranked opponent. They would follow that up just a few days later when they would hand West Viriginia a rare home loss.

After suffering their first loss at the hands of Elena Della Donne and Delaware, the Bonnies rattled off seven straight victories. On Dec. 29, this team would suffer its sec-ond loss in a hard-fought matchup with Villanova. That loss would prove to be trouble for the rest of the opponents on their regular-season schedule. This team was now poised to take themselves and the St. Bonaventure community on the ride of a lifetime.

The Bonnies went on a historic run to start 2012. A 5-0 start in conference play with road wins over Temple and Charlotte had this team begin-ning to believe in perfection. After being picked to finish 6th in the conference, there was an obvious chip on their shoulder. It took a 10-0 start in conference play for the national polls to finally reward the Bonnies for their body of work. They would take the No. 25 ranking with them into Dayton for a matchup against the Flyers.

This matchup would be for sole possession of first place in the A-10. After trailing by 15 early, this team battled back once again and it was a Megan Van Tatenhove running layup as time was running down that would seal the victory for the Bonnies. They would complete a perfect con-ference season with a win at Rhode Island two weeks later.

After two dominating victories over La Salle and host Saint Joseph’s at the Atlantic 10 Championship, they met rival Dayton in the finals for a re-match of the battle these two had in February. Dayton led 27-5 to start the game. The comeback kids did it again however, taking a 51-50 lead late, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Bonnies would fall in that championship game, but there was plenty of magic left in this season.

The NCAA Tournament would come calling. Having been awarded a 5-seed in the Raleigh Region, the Bonnies headed south, to Tallahassee, for a date with 12-seeded Florida Gulf Coast. Trailing by 11 with five minutes remaining in regulation, the Bonnies did it again, forcing overtime and taking control to roll into the second round and a matchup with familiar foe, 13-seeded Marist. The game was a constant back and forth but the Bonnies never relented. Senior Jessica Jenkins knocked down five 3’s to help propel the Bonnies into their first Sweet 16 appearance. The eventual national runner-up Notre Dame would end the magical season in Raleigh.

Van Tatenhove finished ranked 6th all-time in scoring with 1,453 points and 7th all-time with 624 rebounds. Jenkins set an A-10 record with 338 3-pointers in her career which were also good for 12th in NCAA history. She scored 1,441 points which stands 7th all-time in program history. Armelia Horton graduated as the winningest player in St. Bonaventure basketball history with 116 victories. As a class, Horton, Jenkins, Van Tatenhove and Jennie Ashton graduate as the winningest in program history with 98 wins. The 31 wins in 2011-12 are also a program record.

Page 8: 2011-12 Athletics Annual Report

The Bonnies became one of three schools to qualify for their fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament. Seniors Emily Bucilla, Chelsea Smetzer, Hannah Lapp, Janelle Taylor, Alicia D’Alessandro, Dakota Carroll, Tori Burchett, and Kaitlin Krisko finished their careers with a 42-34-4 overall record, tying the school record for wins by a senior class. As a team, they fin-ished in the top-10 percent nationally in Academic Progress Rating. The Bonnies’ multiyear rate over the past four sea-sons is 997 (out of 1,000), the highest among all 14 teams at St. Bonaventure.

Sophomore goalie Megan Junker turned in five shutouts, one shy of the school’s single-season record. Burchett finished ranking 14th on the all-time points list (52) and tied for 15th on the career goals list (21). Krisko has gone on to sign a professional contract to play in Sweden.

The men’s soccer team struggled to a 4-12-3, 0-7-2 record in 2011. The Bonnies saw nine matches decided by just one goal. They will look to bounce back in 2012 as they return 100 percent of their scoring from last season.

James Reed led the team with five goals. For-mer Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team member and A-10 Honorable Mention from 2010, Emmett O’Connor led the team with six assists. Brad Vanino, who was also named to the 2010 A-10 All-Rookie Team, returns as well.

The team also had six players named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

The women’s cross country team contin-ued to improve under coach Bob Mac-farlane in 2011, including a second-place finish in the Little Three Invitational for the first time in three seasons.

Freshman Hannah Robinson was the constant pace setter for this team. Her best performance came at the Little Three Invitational where she posted a 5k time of 19:31, good for a fifth-place finish. She fin-ished at the top of all Bona female runners in the first five of their meets before being upstaged by fellow freshman Emily Steves in the final two. Steves paced the Bonnies at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a 5k time of 19:55.1. She followed up that per-formance by posting a time of 25:01.9 on a 6k layout at the NCAA Regionals.

The Bona women were also exemplary in the classroom. This team had four runners named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

This young men’s cross country team will look to improve this fall on the standards it set during the 2011 season.

With seven freshmen and three sopho-mores on the roster, some future stars began to emerge. Freshman Nick Masiel-lo finished tops among Bona men in all seven of their meets. Masiello posted his best performance at the UB Stampede Invitational where he posted a time of 26:46.5 on the 8k course. He would later pace the Bonnies at the Atlantic 10 Cham-pionships with a time of 27:10.2, good for 94th overall. Freshmen Harley Thompson and Steven Kibbe also stood out, often finishing just behind Masiello.

In the classroom this team performed very well. Two members of the team were named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

The men’s team will add four more run-ners to this young team in the fall.

Women’s sWimming & Diving

Trying to build on last year’s success, the Bonnies finished just one spot shy of their preseason prediction at this year’s Atlantic 10 Championships, finishing seventh.

The storyline of this team was written by their youth. Fresh-man Meaghan McCann highlighted her debut campaign with a ninth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships in the 200-yard backstroke consolation finals. Sophomore Jeanette Dietrich continued to build on her stellar freshman campaign, finishing the 2011-12 season with a 10th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle consolation finals. Just behind Dietrich in the same race, freshman Rachel Bull touched in 15th. Sopho-more McKenzie Courtney finished 8th place overall in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.59. With that finish,

Courtney has set up expectations of a bright future. Better still, freshman Lauren Caldwell finished sixth overall in the 200-yard butterfly. In diving action, it was another youngster, sophomore Chrysta Currier, who finished 14th in the 3-meter.

On the academic side, this team continued to exemplify what it means to be true student-athletes. Women’s swimming and diving saw four athletes named to the Atlantic 10 Commis-sioner’s Honor Roll this year.

This young and improving squad will add six new recruits to help out the 2012-13 edition of the women’s swimming and diving team.

men’s sWimming & Diving The men’s swimming and diving team has become a model of “consistency” in the Atlantic 10. For the 12th time in the last 13 years, the Bona men took the silver medal at the Atlantic 10 Championships, finishing behind now six-time defending cham-pion Massachusetts.

St. Bonaventure saved the best for last as the Bonnies were snatching medals all weekend at the Atlantic 10 Champion-ships. On day one, the 800-yard freestyle relay team composed of senior Yi Liu, freshmen Vatslav Lets and Ripley Danner and sophomore James Martin took home silver with a time of 6:35.95. In diving, junior Mike Murphy showed how dominant he has been in the 1-meter dive all season, finishing in first-place with a score of 302.70.

Day two brought broken records and more hardware for the Bon-nies. Ripley Danner broke the 200-yard IM record with a time of 1:50.75. Lets would take gold in the 500-yard free with a A-10

record time of 4:24.74. Martin went on to set a record time in the 50-yard free, breaking a record held by current women’s swim coach Seth Johnson.

The following day, Lets and Martin would take silver and gold, re-spectively, in the 200-yard free. Danner continued to collect med-als by snagging bronze in the 100-yard backstroke. The highlight of day three, however, came when Mike Murphy took gold in the 3-meter dive.

On the final day of competition James Martin scored a gold medal in the 100-meter free.

In addition to their second-place finish, the Bonnies finished ranked 20th in the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I rankings. They were ranked 23rd in February.

The 2011-12 edition of the women’s tennis team came with highs and lows. After starting off the season with a loss, the team rattled off three straight victories. They followed that up in March with a four-match win-streak; three of them came on the road. They would earn the 12 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship and eventually fell to 5th seeded Xavier in the opening round.

Manuela Marin Salcedo was the leader of the team on and off the court. On the court she played the majority of her matches in the No. 1 spot. She was a three-time A-10 Second Team All-Conference member throughout her four- year career. Off the court she earned the Woman of Promise Award from the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She earned the Merit Award at the annual senior athletes banquet as well as the title of Ideal Female Bonaventure Student at graduation. She would also go on to be nominated for the distinction of NCAA Woman of the Year.

For the fourth consecutive season, the St. Bonaventure women’s tennis squad has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an All-Academic Team selection.

They would go on to fall in the First Round to 6th-seeded Richmond.

There was consistency at the top for this team as Oscar Ya-nez, Luis Guevara and Elliot Fanshel played in the one, two, and three spots, respectively, in every match this season. Each of those players would go on to record 12 wins. The team will look to improve in 2012-13 as every player on the roster will be returning.

The 2012 edition of Bonnies softball was right in the thick of trying to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship until a late losing streak doomed their chances. This team showed, however, just how important success off the field is as well.

Returning star catcher and 2011 All-Conference Second Team member Brooke Frey and 2011 A-10 All-Conference Rookie Team member Ashley Snider dominated the lineup. Snider would finish the season batting .317 with 20 runs scored, six home runs and 21 runs batted in. Frey checked in with a .301 batting average, 23 runs scored, five home runs and 16 runs batted in.

Frey certainly made her mark in the softball record books. She completed her career batting .305 with 76 runs scored, 20 home runs and 73 runs batted in. Her 117 hits ranks her 5th all-time. Her 26 doubles are good for 4th all-time. She ranks 3rd in home runs and tied for 5th in runs scored. Frey is now the all-time leader in walks with 67.

The softball team was very accomplished in the classroom. They had 11 players named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioners Honor Roll, tied for the most of any sport at St. Bonaventure.

The 2012 baseball team nearly duplicated its record from 2011. On the outside looking in, the Bonnies made a push at the end of the season winning five of their last eight to try and fight their way into the Atlantic 10 Championship. But they fell just short.

Junior Billy Urban led the way with a .340 batting aver-age. Sophomore Jason Radwan was right there as well with a .337 average. Urban also led the team with 38 runs batted in.

Ryan Skellie has gone on to sign a professional con-tract with an independent professional team, the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League.

The lacrosse team, with new head coach Ryan Lynn at the helm, got off to a hot start in 2012, scoring 31 goals in its first two outings combined, resulting in two victories. From there the difficulty of their schedule started to catch up with them. After five straight losses they battled Bucknell to a 14-10 victory. However, they would fall short of making the Atlantic 10 Championship.

Senior Danielle Drabin solidified herself as one of the all-time greats in St. Bonaventure lacrosse history. She finished her career with 169 points, which placed her sixth all-time. Her 127 goals is 4th all-time. Always a great all-around player, Drabin had 42 assists in her career which put her 5th on the all-time list.

Lacrosse was also one of the more accomplished teams in the class-room with six players named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

St. Bonaventure Athletics saw a season of excellence rivaled by few others in its storied history. So far this summer, four stand-out athletes have seen their hard work as a Bonnie pay off for them.

Former St. Bonaventure women’s soccer defensive standout Katie Krisko has signed a professional contract to join Gustafs GoIF in Sweden’s Second Division. Krisko, who graduated in May, was a four-year starter for the Bonnies. Krisko helped backstop 24 shutouts over her four-year career. Out of the backfield she tallied 17 points in her career on six goals and five assists and was part of 42 victories. Krisko is a member of the first Bona senior class in program history to have graduated with a double-digit win average each of the four seasons.

Baseball player Ryan Skellie has signed a contract with the Florence Freedom, an independent professional baseball team in the Frontier League. Skellie, who graduated from St. Bonaventure in May, had a tryout with the Freedom, and was signed the same day by the franchise based in northern Kentucky. An Erie, Pa. native, Skellie led the Bonnies last year in home runs (five), slugging percentage (.462) and stolen bases (five).

Following a senior season in 2011-12 in which he posted career highs in five statistical categories, former St. Bonaventure men’s basketball forward Da’Quan Cook has signed a professional contract with BC Yambol in Bulgaria’s National Basketball League. Cook

averaged 7.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 26.8 minutes per game last season. The Elizabeth, N.J. native also recorded career highs in free-throw percentage (75.2) and field goals made (76).

Former St. Bonaventure star Andrew Nicholson was selected by the Orlando Magic with the 19th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. With his selection, Nicholson becomes the 33rd Bonaventure player to be drafted into the NBA, and the first since Barry Mungar was selected in the Fourth Round in 1986. He also becomes the fourth Bona First-Round pick, and first since Bob Lanier was selected with the first overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in 1970. Nicholson stormed through the final month of the 2012 regular season to garner A-10 Player of the Year and Associated Press All-American honors. He powered St. Bonaventure to its first A-10 Championship title – earning a nod for Most Outstanding Player along the way – after posting 26 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks in a title-game win over Xavier that sent SBU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000.

baf informaTionOne of the most successful years in St. Bonaventure Athletics history carried over to the Bonaventure Athletic Fund in 2011-12 as the BAF set a record with $368,359 raised from 811 passionate donors. With the 2012 fiscal year coming to a close on May 31, the BAF surpassed its 2009-10 record of $368,209 raised, and the 811 donors are the second-most in history. “All of us who are a part of St. Bonaventure Athletics are incredibly grateful for the support of our Bonaventure Athletic Fund donors this past year,” said Steve Watson, Director of Athletics. “I cannot emphasize enough how vital these con-tributions are to our student-athletes and coaches. Each year, as we strive to be the best we can be in the Atlantic 10 Conference, additional resources become more critical. “That will continue to be true, and I am confident in the future support of our loyal fans, alumni, families and friends. On behalf of our entire Athletics Department, thank you to our BAF donors for helping us be our best.” Just more than 42 percent of the donated funds were in the form of unrestricted dollars ($155,283), with the other $213,076 being designated gifts to specific sports or program areas. As monetary contributions continue to expand, so does the BAF membership. The prideful group grew by 147 members in 2011-12, up from 667 in 2010-11, representing a drastic increase of 18 percent. The rise in donors is part of an immensely positive trend for SBU Athletics, as over the past four years the number of BAF members has increased by 303, a rise of 37 percent. The BAF is the annual fundraising campaign of the Department of Athletics. Gifts to the BAF provide annual support for St. Bonaventure’s 14 intercollegiate sports programs, thereby enhancing the “Good Journey” of Bonaventure’s 250 student-athletes. BAF contributions fund critical initiatives and gaps in operating expenses that the Athletics Department might otherwise not be able to afford.

In order for the Bonnies to foster and sustain competitive excellence, growth is necessary. The Department of Athletics and the Athletics BAF Advisory Board ask you to make a gift today, and to consider asking a friend to follow your lead. Make a tax-deductible gift today at www.
