Last year, Cal U posted arguably the most successful season in the short history of the swimming program. The Vulcans tied their best finish at both the PSAC and NCAA Championships and featured the school’s first-ever National Champion with Melissa Gates winning the 50 freestyle as a junior. The Vulcans qualified eight swimmers for last year’s NCAA Championships in San Antonio, Texas, and finished 14th in the team standings after Gates and Clarissa Enslin earned All-America honors. Cal U also had three individuals and four relays earn NCAA Honorable Mention All-American status last year. Head coach Ed Denny will look for the Vulcans to again reach such heights on the national stage, as seven of the eight swimmers from the NCAA Championships return this season. Overall, Cal U returns 15 swimmers from a team that finished third at the PSAC Championships. A five-time All-American, Gates is on pace to finish her career as the most decorated swimmer in school history. She set a combined 16 school and Hamer Hall pool records last season and was selected PSAC Athlete of the Week a staggering five times in nine weeks as a junior. Gates broke her own school record in the 50 freestyle three times at last year’s NCAA Championships, winning the title in 22.72 seconds. She also reached All-America status in the 100 freestyle last season after finishing third in the finals at the NCAA Championships with a school-record time of 49.97 seconds. In August, Gates reached the Olympic Time Trial qualifying time in the 50 freestyle while competing at Trees Pool and will compete in the time trials from June 25-July 2, 2012. Enslin, one of four international swimmers on the team, capped a standout freshman campaign by finishing seventh in the finals of the 200 freestyle at the NCAA Championships. She also placed 10th in the 100 freestyle to earn All-America Honorable

Mention. At the PSAC Championships, Enslin became only the second swimmer in school history to win the 200 freestyle after posting a time of 1:51.35. Junior Georgia Emert returns after winning the 500 freestyle at the PSAC Championships. She also earned All-America Honorable Mention at the NCAA Championships in the 500 freestyle and 400 IM. While in San Antonio last year, Emert set the school record in the 400 IM. Junior Bruna Carvalho returns after placing in three events at last year’s PSAC Championships, including the 100 and 200 butterfly. The sophomore trio of Stephanie Bolt, Jess Machmer and Kate Mellon also return after each placed in individual events at the PSAC Championships. Bolt earned points in the 500 freestyle, Machmer placed in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while Mellon captured a top-15 finish in the 400 IM, 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. The Vulcans return virtually all members of their freestyle and medley relays from last season. The 200 and 400 freestyle relays both finished second at the PSAC Championships. At the NCAA Championships, the 200 freestyle relay of Gates, junior Caitlyn Sirkoch, Bolt and Enslin set the school record and finished ninth overall to earn All-America Honorable Mention. The 800 freestyle relay of Enslin, Emert, Bolt and Gates also set the school record and earned All-America Honorable Mention at the NCAA Championships. In the medley relays, Bolt, Carvalho, Emert, Enslin, Gates and Machmer return after each helped the Vulcans set new school and pool records last season. With the amount of talent returning, Cal U is poised to improve upon last year’s impressive championship performances with Gates entering the year as the defending-National Champion.

Sarah Volpe is entering her first season as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania swimming program in the 2011-12 campaign. She comes to the program after serving the last four years as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. Last season, the Eagles finished fourth at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships and featured five All-MAC honorees. Volpe was a four-year swimmer at Ohio, competing in the freestyle and butterfly, before working as a graduate assistant for two years with the Bobcats. She assisted with

recruiting, was involved in competition-day preparations, planned and implemented daily workouts and used video analysis to improve technique. In addition to her work with Ohio, Volpe was a camp counselor and assistant coach for Total Performance Swim Camps. During the summer of 2005, she was an assistant coach at Hoover High School in North Canton, Ohio. Prior to her time at Ohio, Volpe earned four letters in swimming and was a first-team all-league performer at Hoover High School.

A native of Canton, Ohio, Volpe earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise psychology from Ohio in 2005 before completing a master’s degree in coaching education in 2007.

Ed Denny enters his 10th season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team following another top-three finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships and a top-15 showing at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Last season, the Vulcans were third at the PSAC Championships for the second time in three years and had eight swimmers qualify for the NCAA Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Cal U placed 14th in the team standings at the NCAA Championships for the second time in the last three years. Since arriving at Cal U, Denny has coached nine individuals to All-America status, highlighted by the program’s first-ever National Champion in Melissa Gates (50 freestyle) at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Over the past four years, the Vulcans have had five individual PSAC Champions, 11 NCAA All-Americans and 17 NCAA All-America Honorable Mention. In addition to their success in the pool, Denny’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. The Vulcans have been honored as a Scholar All-American team for nine-consecutive years by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA). Last year, Cal U featured 12 PSAC Scholar-Athletes. Originally from Derry, Pa., Denny began his swimming career at Kiski Prep School before enrolling at West Virginia University. He completed his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from WVU in 1982 before earning

his master’s degree in education from Long Island University in 1991. With the Mountaineers, Denny was a NCAA Qualifier in the 1650 freestyle in both 1980 and 1981. A co-captain in 1981, he still holds WVU natatorium records in the 1000 (9:22.01 - 1979) and 1650 (15:34.07 - 1980) freestyle races. He also held the Penn State natatorium record in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:23.40) for 19 years and still holds the Atlantic-10 Conference record in the 1650-yard freestyle at 15:34.07, which he set in 1980. During his time at WVU, Denny placed third in the 1500 freestyle at the 1978 National Junior Olympics in Santa Clara, Calif. In 1980, Denny placed 13th in the 1500 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Irvine, Calif. He started his coaching career in 1983 as graduate assistant with the Mountaineers under head coach Kevin Gilson. A year later, Denny joined the coaching staff at the U.S. Naval Academy. After four seasons at Navy, he returned to Kiski as head coach in 1988. A year later, he returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy, where he stayed for three seasons. Following his time at the Military Academy, Denny accepted the head-coaching position of the men’s and women’s swimming programs at Fairmont State University (W.Va.).

Denny guided the Fighting Falcon swim programs from their transition of NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1995. Under Denny’s leadership, Fairmont State had 19 swimmers earn NAIA All-America honors in 59 events from 1993-95, including the men’s 200 butterfly National Champion in 1995. After the transition to NCAA Division II, Denny guided nine of his swimmers to individual All-America recognition in 29 events from 1995-2001 and an 11th-place finish in the team standings by the 1999 women’s team. The Fairmont State teams were recognized for their exemplary individual and team academic achievements by the CSCAA for five-straight years. Denny resides in California with his wife Carolann.

HISTORY

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-

Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division

II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over

710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16

member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media

relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

An opportunity. That’s how Ed Denny viewed the upstart California University of Pennsylvania swimming program 10 years ago. A decade later, the Vulcans have developed into a perennial contender at the PSAC Championships and a top-20 program on the national stage. With a first-year program, Denny recruited student-athletes on the idea of being part of something that never existed before. The possibility resulted in immediate success for the program, as Sandra Buehler garnered conference and national recognition. A native of Germany, she won the PSAC title in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle and was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year. As a team, the Vulcans finished seventh at the PSAC Championships after posting a 10-0 record in dual meets during the regular season. Buehler also earned All-America status in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle at the 2003 NCAA Championships. The following year, Petra Zavadilova earned All-PSAC honors as the Vulcans finished ninth at the league championships after going 9-1 during the regular season. She also was a NCAA Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 butterfly as a freshman. In 2005, Cal U posted its best finish to that point at the PSAC Championships, finishing sixth behind individual titles by Zavadilova in the 100 and 200 butterfly. In addition to Zavadilova, Rachel Driver, Miranda King, Anca Mihaiu and Melanie Ruch earned All-PSAC honors. King scored in five events at the league championships, while Mihaiu placed in four events. At the NCAA Championships, Zavadilova received All-America honors in both 100 and 200 butterfly. During the regular season, the Vulcans set the school-best mark with 11 wins in dual meets. The Vulcans posted an undefeated dual record at 8-0 in 2006 and finished seventh in the team standings at the PSAC Championships. The following year, Delfina Chandra captured All-PSAC honors to help Cal U place eighth at the league championships. Cal U regained its place in the national scene in 2008 with the addition of Ester Bosch. In her first year with the program, she was an All-American in the 100 and 200 freestyle and was Honorable Mention All-American in the 50 freestyle. At the conference level, Bosch was the first swimmer in three years to claim an individual title by winning the 200 freestyle.

She also placed second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle at her first PSAC Championships. C o u r t n e y Schneiderlochner finished third in the 200 b a c k s t r o k e , while the 200 freestyle relay of Bosch, Rachel Kurta, Schneiderlochner

and King became the second relay in school history, and first since 2005, to earn All-PSAC honors. Building off the success of the previous season, Cal U posted a monumental year in 2009. The Vulcans made an astounding jump at the conference level, finishing third at the PSAC Championships after never finishing above sixth. On the national stage, Cal U qualified a school record nine swimmers for the NCAA Championships, featured a pair of All-Americans in Bosch and Marianne Juhl and boasted the school’s first-ever All-American relay team. At the PSAC Championships, Bosch won the 200 and 500 freestyle, while Juhl captured titles in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle. For the first time in program history, all six of the Cal U relay teams earned All-PSAC honors with Bosch and Melissa Gates on four of the relays. Bosch was an All-American in the 200 and 500 freestyle, while being a member of the All-American 200 freestyle relay with Gates, Teresa Hernanez-Verdu and Kurta. Juhl garnered All-America status in the 1650 freestyle. In 2010, the Vulcans finished fifth at the PSAC Championships after six swimmers earned All-PSAC honors. Gates developed into one of the top swimmers in the country as a sophomore, finishing fourth in the 50 freestyle at the NCAA Championships. As a senior, Bosch earned All-America honors for the sixth time in her career as a member of 800 freestyle relay with Georgia Emert, Gates and Kurta.. Last season was another defining year for the development of the Cal U program, as Gates became the first National Champion in

the history of the program. As a team, the Vulcans finished 14th at the NCAA Championships for the second time in three years. Now a five-time All-American, Gates won the preliminaries and finals in the 50 freestyle and also finished third in the 100 freestyle at the NCAA Championships. As a freshman, Clarissa Enslin earned All-America laurels in the 200 freestyle. In addition to the individual success, four relays earned Honorable Mention All-America status in 2011. At last season’s PSAC Championships, the Vulcans again finished third in the team standings with eight All-PSAC swimmers. Enslin and Emert won the 200 freestyle and 400 IM, respectively. Following a record-breaking junior season, Gates qualified for the 2012 Olympic Time Trials this summer in the 50 freestyle and will compete in Omaha, Neb., during the summer of 2012. A decade after the start of the program, Cal U offers an opportunity to compete for conference titles, earn All-America status, win a National Championship and even a chance to qualify for the Olympics.

Last season, the Vulcans finished 14th in the team standings at the NCAA Championshipsafter qualifying eight swimmers for the event in San Antonio, Texas.

Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan swimming. I am confident that Coach Ed Denny, his staff and the student-athletes will continue to build upon the swimming tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Swimming and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011-12 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
