The Dawn of a New Era

First-yearheadcoachNormBazinknowsthatUMassLowelliscapablesuccessonthenationalstage,he’sseenitfirsthand. AformerRiverHawkplayerfrom1990-94andanassistantcoachfrom1996-00,BazinhasplayedalongsideaHobeyBakerfinalist,defeatedNewHampshire toreachtheHockeyEastChampionshipgameandbattledMinnesotaindouble-overtimefortherighttoreachtheNCAAFrozenFour. Momentslikethosestaywithaplayerforeverandthey’remo-mentsBazinwouldliketohelpcreateforanewgenerationofRiverHawks. ToaccomplishthatgoalUMassLowellneedstime,butgroundworkforthatsuccessliesindevelopingtheplayersontheiceandcreatingacultureofwinningwithinprogram. Thatdevelopmentbeginswiththecoachandhisplayersadjust-ingtoeachotherasBazinisjustbeginningtoseewhathisathletescandoinactionduringtheirfirstpreseasontogether. “We’restillgettingtoknoweachother,”saidBazinofhisteam.“Ithinkthey’regettingtoknowwhatmyexpectationsareforthemand,more importantly, I’mstartingto learnwhat they’recapableof—soit’sbeenagoodcombination.” “Ifweclaimtobeafamilyandplayasateam,thenwe’regoingtobeateamrightawayandthat’swhatwehave.WhetherIrecruitedthemorsomebodyelserecruitedthem,that’ssomethingwecannotcontrol,sowewon’tattemptto.We’llplaywithwhowehave,we’llmakethesethebestpossibleplayersthatwecanandtrytodevelopthemtotheirfullpotential.” UMassLowell is forced to rebuildafteradisappointing2010-11 campaign thatfinishedwith a5-25-4 record and a 4-21-2 clipin conference play—earning theRiverHawksalastplacefinishinthe Hockey East standings. Theseasonmarked the fewest winsfortheprogramsince1968-69,itssecondyearofexistence,whentheteamplayeda13-gameschedule. What that season did bringwasagreatdealofexperienceforwhatwasa13-memberfreshmenclass.UMassLowellgraduatedjustfive seniors, while returning 20players anda remarkable 74.5%(167of224points)ofitstotalof-fensefromayearago. Among those returnees, theRiverHawkswelcomebackapairof30-pointscorersinseniorDavidValloraniandjuniorRileyWetmore.Valloranienters theyearwith85careerpointsandispoisedtobe-comethe40thplayer inprogramhistorytobreakthecenturybarrier. His counter-part,Wetmore,grew as a player last season,doubling his production from his15-pointfreshmancampaign. Bazin acknowledges thatthosetwocan’tsucceedaloneandexpectstheRiverHawkstotakeabalanced,aggressiveapproachtotheoffensethisseason. “Ultimatelywewanttoplaya

veryaggressive,tenaciousfore-checkingstylethatgeneratesoffenseinbothtransitionandofftherush.Inordertodothatyouneedcertaintypesofplayers:youneedplayerswhoaretenaciousinnatureandcanmoveverywell,butyoualsoneedsomesize.” “Outofallofthosethings,Iseesizeassomethingwe’relackingatthemomentandwe’llhopetocorrectthatinthefuture.” WhileBazin’shiringgrabbed theheadlines thisoffseason,hewon’tbealone in rebuilding theprogram.Shortlyafternamingaheadcoach,UMassLowellhiredapairofexperiencedassistantsinJasonLammersandCamEllsworth. Theduobrings14yearsofcombinedcoachingexperiencetothetable,withstopsatvariousprominentcollegeandjuniorlevelprograms. “Theplayersreallyrespondtothem”Bazinsaid.“JasonisaveryenthusiasticpersonbynaturewhileCamisveryanalyticalandcer-tainlyagoodteacherwiththegoaltenders.Ialreadyseetheimpactthey’rehaving.” Fanswon’thavetowaitlongtogettheirfirstlookattheRiverHawks.AftertravelingtoMankato,Minn.tofaceMinnesotaStateonOct.14-15,UMassLowellwillreturneasttoplayConnecticutonthe18thintheConwayArenainNashua,N.H.Thencomestheprogram’sfirstbigtestwhenthe2010NCAAChampionBostonCollegeEaglesvisittheTsognasCenterforthe2011-12homeopeneronOct.28. WhilemanywillcircleBostonCollege’sarrivalontheircalendars,thecoachingstaff isn’t readyto lookany further thantheteam’sexhibitiongameonOct.8versusNewBrunswick. “Ivieweverygameasameasuringstickmomentforthisclub

because it’s going to be aworkin progress,” said Bazin. “I seethe exhibition game being aninitialmeasurement for some oftheseguysandhowtheycanplayagainstbigger,olderandstrongerkids.” “Everyweekwehopetogetbet-terandIreallyfeelit’sgoingtobeanongoingprocessinmeasuringourimprovement.”

FORWARDS

The forwards carried the bulkoftheoffensefortheRiverHawkslast season and that trend willlikelycontinuein2011-12.Ofthe167totalpointscomingback,148came from this year’s forwards(88.6%). “Ithinkit’sgoingtobeateamthathastoscorebycommittee,”saidBazin.“Ifwecangetsix10-goalscorers,wecanstarttomakesomenoise.ButwewillneedsixdifferentguysthatcancontributeandI’mlookingforwardtoseeingwhostepsuptothechallenge.” UMassLowell’stopthreescor-erslastseasonallcamefromtheforwardline,inVallorani,Wetmoreand senior Matt Ferreira. Thosethreecombinedtoscore36goalsandwillbecountedontorepeat

thatsuccess. ForVallorani,2010-11wasacareeryearinmanyrespects.Thespeedster reached double-digitgoals (12) for thefirst timeandsurpassed the 30-point barrierafterfinishingeachofhisfirsttwoseasonswith 27 points. Perhapsthebiggestimprovementwashisexplosive showing on the powerplay, scoring six goals with theextramanafternetting justoneasasophomore. Wetmore has asserted him-selfaleaderfortheRiverHawks,earning assistant captainship asa sophomore.Stepping into thatrole,Wetmoretalliedateam-high14 goals and went scoreless inconsecutivegamesjusttwicelastseason. Ferreira,marred by injuriesearly inhis career, proved tobea skilled and gritty skater withanose for thenet.Afterscoringjust10pointsthroughhisfirsttwoseasons,Ferreiratotaled17pointsasajunioron10goalsandsevenassists. TheircontributionswereaidedbyexplosivefreshmanJosephPen-denzawhonetted10goals,morethan the club’s other 10 rookieskaterscombined(8).Amonghistallies, Pendenza electrified thecrowdswithlightningquickbreak-awaysthatresultedinthreeshort-handedgoalslastseason. As UMass Lowell searches formore production from furtherdownthelinechart,thereareseveralcandidateswhocouldstepintoprimetimeroles. MichaelBudd,DerekArnoldandJoshHolmstromallreturnaf-terreachingdouble-digitpointslastseasonandcouldbepoisedforbreakoutcampaigns. Buddhasshownpromiseasascoreroverthecourseofhiscareer.Heentershissenioryearwithtotalsof14goalsand17assists. BucojoinstheRiverHawksafterstarringfortheBostonBulldogsoftheAtlanticJuniorHockeyLeague.Thetwo-timeAJHLMostValu-ablePlayerandscoringchampion,Bucoiscomingoffa100pointseason(44g,56a)in2010-11. Conderman,whowillbesidelinedwithaninjuryforthefirst-halfoftheyear,playedfortheMuskegonLumberjacksoftheUnited

StatesHockeyLeague.Theforwardtotaled32points(11g,21a)in57gameswithMuskegon. Cowlesspent lastseasonwiththeNewHampshireJr.MonarchsoftheEasternJuniorHockeyLeague.Hetotaled30points(9g,21a) in29gamesplayedwhilehelpingtheMonarchswintheEJHLChampion-ship. Lastly,Wallin helped lead theGunnery School to three NewEnglandPrepSchoolHockeyCon-ference(NEPSHC)WestChampion-shipsandservedasteamcaptainasasenior.Forhiscareer,Wallintotaled38goalsand73assistsin77 games—including a 26 point(9g,17a)seniorseason. “It’sgoingtobearealexperi-encetoseesomeoftheseyoungmenasfreshmenandintwoyears,be able to talk about howmuchthey’vegrownphysicallyandmen-tallyinthattime,”saidBazinofhisfreshmenclass.

Hisbestprofessionalseasoncamein2006-07,backstoppingtheThundertoitsfirstplayoffappearanceinfranchisehistorywith14-13-3record,2.62goalsagainstaverageand.907savepercentage. Inadditiontostandardathletictrainingduties,Poitrashandlesthead-ministrationofathletic insuranceandbudget issuesand isastaff liaisonwithoutsidemedicalproviders.Onthenationallevel,PoitrasservesastherepresentativetotheCollege/UniversityAthleticTrainer’sCommittee,dealingwithissuessurroundingcollegeathletictrainersaroundthecountry.In2005,PoitrasreceivedtheMarcConnellyAward,givenanuallytoanon-playerwhomadeasignificantpositiveimpactontheRiverHawkhockeyprogram.

SeanPatnoentershisfourthseasonasequip-mentmanager forUMassLowellhockey.He isresponsibleforordering,issuing,maintainingandrepairingallRiverHawkhockeyequipment.Inaddition,Patnocoordinatestheteam’stravelingarrangementsandstudentworkerschedules. A former standout UMass Lowell baseballplayer,Patnostarredatshortstopforthebetter

partoffourseasons(2004-7).Asure-handeddefender,hecurrentlyholdsthreeprogramdefensiveassistrecords,mostinacareer(499),season(162)andgame(11).Inaddition,hehastheRiverHawks’recordforsacrificehitsinacareer(22).Hewascareer.279hitter. A2007graduateofUMassLowell,Patnoholdsabachelor’sdegreeinHis-torywithaminorinEducation.

Devan McConnellDirector of Sports Performance

DevanMcConnellwasnamedUMassLowell’sfirstDirectorofSportsPerformanceinSeptemberof2011. The newly-created position is tasked withintegrating a cutting edge sports performanceprogramintotheUniversity’sathleticdepartment.McConnell works primarily with the Division Ihockey team, but also oversees performance

trainingforthe16DivisionIIprograms. “We’repleasedtohaveDevanjointhestaffatUMassLowell,”saidAth-leticDirectorDanaSkinner.“Hisknowledgeinthefield,combinedwithhisexperienceatStanford,willbeofgreatbenefittoourstudent-athletesashedevelopsafirst-ratecenterforsportsperformance.” PriortojoiningUMassLowell,McConnellservedastheSportsPerformanceCoordinatoratStanfordUniversityfrom2008-11.Heworkedcloselywiththewomen’sbasketballandmen’sandwomen’svolleyball--allNCAATournamentregulars.Duringhistenure,themen’svolleyballprogramwonan2010NCAAChampionship. WhileatStanford,McConnellalsoservedasthePerformanceEducationCoordinator,instructingtheCardinals’personnel,buildingastafflibraryand

schedulingguestspeakers. “UMassLowellprovidesagreatopportunityformetoworkwithaDivisionIhockeyprogramandthrivingDivisionIIteamswhilebuildingatop-tiersportsperformanceprogramfromthegroundup,”saidMcConnell.“Thefacilitiesherearegreat,thetraditionofsuccessisstrongandthereisalotofroomforgrowthbecauseofthecommitmentfromboththeadministrativestaffandthestudent-athletes.” Before his appointment to Stanford,McConnell worked atMike BoyleStrengthandConditioning,oneoftheleadingsportsperformancefacilitiesintheNortheast.HealsospenttimeworkingwithtwoNHLteams,theAnaheimDucksandSanJoseSharks.
