A foundation for the futureThe Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW) is a Catholic elementary school in downtown Chicago that provides an academically excellent, values-oriented education to students of all ethnic, religious, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in a child-centered urban environment. As a keystone of its diverse community, FXW provides needs-based scholarships to thirty percent of its students. FXW partners with its families, nurtures faith development for its Catholic students and engages all its students to learn about and respect other faith traditions. FXW uses a rigorous curriculum that enables students to grow, clarify their values, and develop decision-making skills and a sense of responsibility for themselves and the world they will inherit.

Dear Family,For the past six years, I have had the privilege of working with a talented and dedicated team of teachers who regularly amaze and inspire me. Without exception, the teachers at FXW are able to create a sense of excitement about learning that our students will carry with them for a lifetime.

In these pages you will find the stories of some truly great teachers who inspire our children to believe in themselves and to dare to try hard things. They are accomplished in their fields and always at the forefront of learning about their craft. They engage the whole family in working towards a student’s success and are living examples of the connection between good work habits and high achievement. They inspire students to thrive on high expectations and to learn for the joy of it. They remind our students to be generous of heart and to appreciate all of the gifts with which they have been blessed.

This past year, seventeen of our teachers earned their Master’s degrees, bringing the total percent of FXW teachers with a graduate degree or in graduate school to 90%. Their educational experiences brought a whole new energy to our teaching community and enhanced our discussions about how to better design authentic and meaningful learning experiences for our children.

We will continue to expand career and leadership opportuni-ties like these; opportunities that allow teachers to develop their practice, foster a school culture that encourages collaboration with their colleagues, and empowers them with the autonomy to innovate and thrive, because we know that great teachers inspire great futures.

Letter FroM chair oF Board

Dear Friends, Working closely with the faculty at FXW, I have seen firsthand the inspiring effects of teachers who lead our school in shaping innovative classroom techniques.

As the Chairman of the FXW Board of Trustees, I am proud that in just over 20 years, FXW has emerged as one of the top private Catholic schools in the nation. We know, however, that FXW must continue to update and improve its rigorous academic program to ensure relevance in a rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected world.

This past year, the Board approved a strategic plan, which will serve as our roadmap for the next five years. (A list of the key goals in the FXW Strategic Plan for 2012-2017 can be found on page 20 of this Annual Report).

As part of this plan, we have embarked on a thorough review of the FXW curriculum, which will be completed by the end of the 2013 school year.

Already, we have implemented key changes to our math curriculum. We upgraded our Kindergarten math program to provide students with a stronger start to math and made the 6th grade program more rigorous. We have also added an accelerated algebra option to the 8th grade curriculum for students who are ready for a greater challenge.

Last year we also saw the rollout of our highly successful One-to-One program, which introduced laptop computers to each of our 5-8th graders. In the coming year, we will enhance the program and will introduce iPads to students beginning in the 5th grade.

We also recognize that FXW’s school facilities must be upgraded in order to attract and retain top faculty and students, support academic, athletic and extracurricular programs and to provide an environment reflective of how people will learn in the future. In the Spring of 2012, FXW renewed our lease for the Holy Name Cathedral campus, which has allowed us to make some much-needed enhance-ments to the facilities.

This past summer we saw the repair of the roof, the addition of an enhanced life safety system and the replacement of the gym floor at the Holy Name Cathedral campus. We expect additional enhancements to our physical space in the coming years. Many of these upgrades to our curriculum and physical space would not have been possible without your support, and for that, we thank you.

This annual report expounds upon the qualities that make an FXW education so special, so unique, and so deserving of our ongoing support. The future of FXW will require the active participation and enthusiasm of our entire community, and I look forward to sharing this journey with each of you.

What Makes a Great Teacher?Teaching is arguably one of the most difficult professions around. Teachers must have a wide base of knowledge of subject matter, curriculum development and standards; enthusiasm; a caring attitude; an ability to connect with students and parents as individuals; knowledge of discipline and classroom management techniques; and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people.

Great teachers must continually focus on gaining new knowledge and skills and perfecting their craft. From earning their Master’s degrees to sharing new techniques with fellow teachers at weekly meetings to presenting their ideas to the larger teaching community, FXW teachers are constantly learning. Last year, a record 17 teachers earned their Master’s degrees, bringing the total percent of FXW teachers who had earned their Master’s degrees or who are in graduate school to 90%.

Georgia Hawkins and Liz Cummins, who team teach the 3-4 year old preschoolers, were among the 17 FXW teachers who earned their Master’s degrees last year. They enrolled in different graduate programs, Cummins at the Erikson

Institute and Hawkins at Concordia University. Hawkins focused her degree on Curriculum and Instruction and Cummins on Early Childhood Development.

As an outgrowth of their studies, the two were invited to present at the local Association for the Education of Young Children conference where they introduced ideas in play-based learning to a sell-out crowd. “We felt rejuvenated and re-energized. It helped us to clarify things that we take for granted and to become more reflective about what we do,” said Hawkins. “And we realized how lucky we are to work with each other every day,” finished Cummins.

Masters oF education Teacher professional development at FXW is largely funded through donations made to the Annual Fund. Last year we congratulated the following teachers on obtaining their Master’s degree:

You’ve bought your ticket and boarded the roller coaster. Now you’re barreling down the

track at 60 miles per hour, taking hairpin turns and completing death-defying loops. Your

heart is in your throat and your stomach is somewhere near your shoes. The only thing

separating you from total disaster is a safety harness...but are you really in danger?

Meagan Ursini’s 8th grade science class can answer that question. Each year, one of the class highlights is the Roller Coaster Rally and class trip to Six Flags Great America for Physics Day.

Ursini, who has been teaching 7th and 8th grade science at FXW for the past two years, explains, “After exposing the students to basic physics concepts, such as potential and kinetic energy, velocity and gravity, we ask them to design, build and analyze a roller coaster track for marbles made out of plastic tubing.” She continues, “The students are expected to present their roller coaster prototype and answer questions about their design at the annual Roller Coaster Rally.”

“Students then get to experience first hand how thrilling physics can be when we take a trip to Six Flags Great America,” she says. “Students participate in physics lectures and hear from the park’s engineers about the science of modern roller coaster design. They go out into the park and gather data on roller coasters – such as the length of the track and speed at which the coaster is traveling. And, of course, they will experience the forces of physics by riding on the roller coasters,” she finishes.

“Our students truly understand basic physics principles when they leave FXW. By the end of the 8th grade, we want them to have been exposed to all of the subjects that they will study in high school. We want the concepts that they learn in high school to be familiar and comfortable because FXW laid a solid foundation of understanding,” Ursini explains.

Ursini stresses the importance of grabbing students’ attention, “Students at this age have so much curiosity. It is our job as teachers to help to corral their thoughts and to move them in the right direction,” she says.

As for how safe roller coasters are? The designers of roller coasters carefully craft this thrilling ride to be just that, but roller coasters are probably no less safe than most sports.

planning with a Goal in Mind

Some may be surprised to learn that 7th

and 8th grade Social Studies teacher,

Casey Campe, begins planning for her

class not by writing a lesson plan, but by

writing the final exam.

“I start with several central themes and ideas that I want them to learn for the year and develop an assessment tool to test for comprehension in those areas. I develop each unit plan and individual lesson plans with that end goal in mind,” says Campe.

Campe uses a method of planning known as ‘Backwards Design’, made popular by educational leaders, Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. “Backwards Design structures learning in a more sequential and meaningful way for the students,” says Campe.

Campe is careful to distinguish Backwards Design teaching from ‘Teaching for the Test’. “Backwards Design doesn’t mean I skip a subject if it isn’t ‘on the test’.” Campe begins her plan by selecting one or two overarching themes for the year, such as the impact of colonization or the role of social justice in the world. Once the theme is selected, she defines the skills that she wants her students to learn and decides how they will be assessed along the way. Only then does she develop the individual lesson plans. Suprisingly, this model gives Campe a great deal of flexibility to adapt her lesson plan along the way.

“I want my students to be able to make real connections to the overall ideas taught in my class,” elaborates Campe. “Kids are amazing critical thinkers,” she elaborates. “They have these wonderful ‘aha’ moments when they are given the opportunity to connect their knowledge to a greater understanding of the subject. This kind of understanding motivates them to want to learn more about a topic,” she continues.

Campe believes that true understanding comes not just from knowing the facts, but from understanding the meaning behind those facts. She does this by making her lessons very relatable. She introduced the First Amendment to her students through Vietnam era protest songs and helped them to really connect with ideas of social justice by getting them involved in a fundraiser for genocide victims in current-day Uganda.

“It is my hope that students come to truly understand these subjects and become better citizens of the world as a result,” says Campe.

KiM sLoan 1st Grade Teacher

a passion for Learning

Ask any great teacher why they entered the profession and his or her response will

invariably speak to his or her love of learning. That same passion for learning may be one

of the keys to what makes that person a great teacher.

Kim Sloan, a 1st grade teacher who recently earned her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Concordia University, says, “There were twelve FXW teachers in my cohort at Concordia, which made it very easy for us to share ideas and to talk about how to immediately implement what we were learning for the students at FXW.”

“One of my favorite courses was ‘Teacher as Practitioner’,” she says. “The class focused on the science of how the brain learns and retains information,” she continues. “The program taught techniques and teaching strategies rooted in a program called Kagan, which followed brain-based learning. Kagan structures, as these techniques and strategies are called, emphasize collaborative learning where students engage with and learn from peers. The teacher guides the class through student centered learning. Unlike traditional lecture style, teaching this approach centers around activities which allow the students to learn from each other and be their own teacher,” says Sloan.

“The class also placed great emphasis on ‘energizers’. Energizers are short, quick activities connected to educational material which allow students to move their bodies. Energizers, like exercise, increase blood flow, pumping more oxygen to the brain. When you understand how the brain works, that it needs oxygen and fuel to learn and retain information, you realize that students shouldn’t sit still for hours at a time,” she says. “To get the most out of a lesson, children really shouldn’t sit still for more than 16 minutes at a time; they need to be up and moving,” says Sloan.

She immediately implemented ‘energizer breaks’ and other Kagan structures into her classroom and quickly saw positive results. “My kids were focused. They could apply the information they were learning better,” she continues. “My kids were actively engaged in the lessons and they began taking ownership of their learning,” she continues. “I felt that this information was so important that I brought it to the administration and they supported me in implementing these lessons more broadly at FXW,” says Sloan. “Now if I walk past

another 1st grade class I’m likely to see the kids playing a version of Red Light! Green Light! as they transition from one part of the lesson plan to the next.”

“FXW is an amazingly supportive place for teachers who want to continue learning, to continue perfecting their craft,” she says. “For me, learning is a life-long process. I plan to be learning until I’m 99.”

a song in their hearts

Every morning last year, music teacher Autumn Perry welcomed the preschoolers to

FXW with live music. “I would sit in the hallway and sing familiar songs while playing

the autoharp,” she says.

Perry soon realized that she had a fan club. Twin brothers, Neil and Jay Manadan, age 5, seemed to always be at her side. They would suggest songs and sing along. They danced and moved along with the music and would escort her into the classroom when class started.

On the playground, Perry would continue to serenade the children with song and the Manadan twins would be at her side, enthusiastically serving as her back-up vocalists.

“They began coming to school with tape or penne pasta noodles on their fingers in imitation of the finger picks I used,” she says. “They drew pictures of autoharps and had amazing recollection for details.”

“Inspiration,” explains Perry, “comes when a student feels connected to a subject. When it is relevant and meaningful to them,” she continues.

Perry achieved this sense of connection by first structuring her lessons to be predictable. Each lesson began with “Good Day, Sunshine” and ended with “Happy Trails”. This predictability provided support to preschoolers becoming more responsible, independent and confident. Alongside this base of predictability, Perry allowed students to choose and change songs and activities.

Last year’s Kindergarten Musical, for example, was entirely student directed. “The children selected the theme of ‘Friendship’,” she says. “They wrote the narration, built the set, created the props and choreographed the entire production,” she continues. Perry selected songs that the children could relate to such as: “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, “Lean On Me”, “You’re My Best Friend”, and “Thank You for Being a Friend.”

The musical featured a solo performance by 5 year old Quinn Robinson. “Quinn has a truly beautiful voice and it was obvious he could vocally handle the solo. Quinn was socially reserved, however, and was not naturally comfortable with getting more attention than others,” says Perry.

In preparation for his solo, “I encouraged him to sing solos, duets and trios in class so that he could get comfortable with the idea. His classroom performances left him feeling supported by his peers. I engaged his parents and they offered him further encouragement to perform,” she explains.

“After four months of encouragement, Quinn found the song in his heart and sang the first verse of ‘Lean On Me’ solo at the musical,” she says. “It was truly beautiful,” says Perry.

Steven Ripes, the 7th and 8th grade math

teacher, approaches planning for class as

one would expect a math teacher to do:

with methodical precision and discipline.

Most days, Steven Ripes begins thinking about his math classes when his alarm clock goes off at 5 am and doesn’t stop thinking about them until his head hits the pillow later that night.

Ripes breaks his day down into finite blocks of time, and has a task assigned to almost every minute of the day, from designing lesson plans, to grading papers and exams, to updating the class blog in an effort to stay in touch with students and families.

Just as Ripes breaks his own day into smaller pieces, he believes in breaking large learning goals into smaller mini-goals. “By breaking a lesson down into smaller increments, it becomes more manageable for students. I use the analogy of a pizza. Just like you wouldn’t put a whole pizza in your mouth at once, you need to digest math slice-by-slice,” says Ripes.

“By breaking math down into small bites, the students have the experience of accomplishing something every day, every week,” he says. “I also encourage them to work towards understanding as opposed to perfection,” he says.

“Seeing my students reaching for these goals, showing initiative and coming to appreciate math in their own accord is what inspires me to do this work,” says Ripes. “Math truly is a beautiful subject, on par with art, poetry or music and I feel truly honored when my students come to understand that, as well,” he says.

Lindsay MosshaMMer 2nd and 3rd Grade Science Teacher

Learning From Our Mistakes

Lindsay Mosshammer, the 2nd and 3rd grade science teacher, believes that if you

aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t learning.

“Kids at this age are very focused on the destination. I try to get them to focus on the journey – on the things that we can learn along the way,” she says. “When we conduct experiments in the lab and the students’ results vary, it gives us the opportunity to talk about why they got different results. My goal is to help to develop their critical learning skills,” she continues.

Mosshammer describes their ‘penny spill’ lab, where students had to find out how many pennies dropped into a cup filled with water would cause the water to spill out. “Some students dropped the pennies from great heights, while others daintily placed the pennies into the cups, resulting in very different outcomes,” she says. “This gave us the opportunity to dialogue and understand that how they conducted their experiment had impacted their results,” she explains.

To talk to Mosshammer about her teaching style is to talk to a very reflective person. Last year, Mosshammer returned to graduate school to further hone her skills, focusing her degree on Scientific Literacy. “Literacy is an essential skill in science. If you don’t know the language of science, it becomes very difficult for a student to go very far,” she clarifies.

“I also learned a great deal about how to track students’ performance. It is so important for a teacher to check-in at various intervals to determine if the students are actually learning,” she continues. “It can be one of the hardest things we do as teachers – because there is a difference between a student seemingly getting the material and really getting it,” she says.

parent group

Support for ExcellenceOver 150 parents volunteer their time with the Parent Group in activities that range from helping with drop-off and pick-up, to volunteering in the classroom, to hosting staff appreciation events to organizing community service projects, such as the Bike and Hike and class socials.

“We are very lucky to have an active Parent Group at FXW,” says Head of School, Mary Reiling. “They support us in so many different ways. We honestly couldn’t do this without them,” says Reiling.

Terri Franklin, who has been volunteering with the Parent Group for the past eleven years, explains, “Parents form a real partnership with FXW teachers through the Parent Group.” Franklin has been involved with a Parent Group program

known as ‘Artist Volunteers In the Classroom’ (AVIC). Through AVIC, FXW partners with the Art Institute in bringing art into the classroom.

Parent volunteers receive detailed training by the Art Institute in a particular technique, period or artist and are invited into the classroom to teach. “It is a great opportunity for parents to get more involved in their child’s classroom,” describes Franklin.

Through programs like AVIC and nearly 20 other programs, the Parent Group enhances the student experience at FXW. We would like to thank the following Parent Group Volunteers for their support of FXW:

parents at the heart (path)

Joining in the Journey They are the silent heroes of the FXW community. For over seven years, the nearly 50 members of the Parents at the Heart Committee (PATH) have offered their quiet support to fellow members of the FXW community in need and have worked to build the FXW community through family-focused events.

Their help has come in the form of spiritual support through prayer, emotional support from a caring listener, or practical support such as meal preparation for a new mom, carpool help for a family dealing with serious illness or childcare for families dealing with a loss. When a FXW family is in need, PATH is there.

Each classroom has a PATH parent representative that works with the teacher to organize support to families during times of illness, death, births and life-altering events. The committee also hosts four key family events each year: Fun Fest, Grandparents’ Day, Mardi Gras and the Mothers’ Day Luncheon.

Cara Pollard, a committee member since the group’s inception, says, “I’m most proud of what the committee does that no one will ever know about.”

Although we cannot thank the committee for their specific acts of kindness, the FXW Community would like to thank the members of PATH collectively, for their ongoing support of the FXW mission.

Pioneering the WayWe often talk about FXW as being a ‘community’ or a ‘family’ and it certainly felt that way at February 2012’s inaugural FXW Homecoming. Just as families may have members living far and wide, FXW has over 800 alumni and parent alumni who, although no longer on campus, remain connected through their FXW experiences.

In addition to the Homecoming event, the Alumni Association hosted an alumni-networking event in the fall and welcomed FXW’s newest alumni, the Class of 2012 and their parents, to become members of FXW’s alumni community at graduation.

Kendall Mallette, an FXW parent who has been integral to the growth and development of the FXW Alumni Association, believes very strongly in the importance of maintaining alumni connections. “I attended a small private school and am always thrilled to reconnect with my fellow alumni. We shared a common experience that bonds us together for life.”

Mallette sees a similar connection among FXW alumni and parent alumni and is excited that there is a strong interest in preserving those bonds at FXW.

FXW would like to offer thanks to the Alumni Association for their efforts in building and preserving alumni connections at FXW.

Mother Frances Xavier warde day

Living the LegacyOn a rainy day in April, over 1,000 students, faculty, staff and parent volunteers began the 1.5 mile walk from Holy Name Cathedral to Old Saint Patrick’s Church in honor of the legacy of Mother Frances Xavier Warde, for whom The Frances Xavier Warde School is named. Despite the rain, spirits were high as the students from the HNC campus made their way across the city to the church. They were greeted by loud cheers from the students from the Old Saint Patrick’s campus.

In the weeks leading-up to the event, the students at FXW learned about the legacy of Mother Warde, a Sister of Mercy nun, who founded almost 90 schools and hospitals in the United States. The students also helped to prepare over 500 backpacks loaded with school supplies, which were donated to five youth focused charities: Horizons for Youth, Sumner School in the North Lawndale neighborhood, Lydia Home, LIFT and the Institute for Women Today.

Parent organizers, Dan Anderson and Teri Montes, hoped that the event would reflect the unique culture of community involvement and support present at FXW. “My child is learning something very important at FXW. I hope that he and the other children at FXW will be impressed by the work of Mother Warde,” says Ramiro Atristain, who documented the day with his camera and created a commemorative book.

“There was an amazing energy that day,” says Anderson. “We really felt like we were living the FXW mission,” adds Montes.

Plans are already underway for a second Mother Frances Xavier Warde Day in 2013. FXW families will be asked to not just honor Mother Warde’s legacy, but to live it by performing 4,000 hours of service over the 2012-2013 school year.

Special thanks to all of the volunteers who made the first annual Mother Frances Xavier Warde Day possible.

sociaL service report

Making a Difference Social service is a part of our curriculum from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade graduation. We feel that it helps students to become engaged citizens of the world whose lives will continue to reflect the lessons learned at FXW long after they leave.

From pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade, students engage in projects that expose them to the impact of homeless-ness, poverty and hunger and they come to understand people with special needs and the elderly.

Beginning in the seventh grade, students are asked to participate in individually selected social service activities. Under the guidance of FXW staff, the students select three different service experiences and volunteer for a total of

fifteen hours. In the eighth grade, they are asked to select one volunteer location site and volunteer twenty hours of their time. Social service activities include tutoring other students, working with adults with developmental delays, coaching children who are developmentally delayed or working at a neighborhood soup kitchen.

Julie Peterson, the advisor for the 7th and 8th grade program, says, “We want to help create citizens that will continue to look at the world as a place to give back.” She continues, “The kids really internalize what they have learned at FXW. I have students who come back years later and tell me that they are still volunteering.”

high school reportTypically, the majority of FXW graduates are accepted into their first choice for high school. High school counseling and support services begin in the 6th grade when FXW hosts high school night programs. In the 7th and 8th grade, students and their parents begin meeting individually with a counselor. The primary goal of the program is to guide each student in identifying the high school that best matches his or her unique abilities and ambitions.

terranova results All students at FXW take TerraNova Standardized Tests (TerraNova), in the spring of their 3rd - 7th grade years. The TerraNova is a series of standardized achievement tests used in the United States designed to assess K-12 student achievement in five main test areas.

Millions of other students across the country take the same tests and, by comparing their scores, a national norm is established, which indicates the progress that students are making at different grade levels. This national norm is set at the 50th percentile. Scores above the 50th percentile indicate that students are progressing more rapidly than the norm; scores below 50, that they are progressing less

rapidly. A score that is 7 or more points higher than the norm shows a significant difference in progress.

Scores for FXW students in grade levels three through seven were all in the 90th percentile or above last year, meaning FXW students all scored in the top tenth percentile nationally. These scores along with many other assessment tools provide teachers with valuable information in order to properly design instruction to maximize learning. We are delighted that FXW has experienced such great academic success.

the Financial reportIn fiscal year 2011-2012 FXW made solid progress towards establishing a financial footing that will enable us to continue achieving our mission in the short-term and for future generations. Tuition was only increased 3% over the

prior year, but contributions remained strong and careful attention to expense control produced strong results. This has allowed us to contribute to our capital reserves that will provide for long-range facilities improvements.

April Greer, the 4th and 5th grade Resource teacher, will do

whatever it takes to grab her students’ attention, from talking in funny voices to breaking into song and dance. And the students love it. They love her. “I get my energy from the kids,” she says. “I actually learn more from them than they do from me and I love that. Every year I learn how to do my job better, thanks to them.”

Amy Evans and Kerri Johnson, team teachers of one of FXW’s preschool classes, let their students guide the lesson plan.

“In early childhood classrooms, the children drive the curriculum,” explains Evans. “The teacher is continually figuring out each child and each class in terms of who they are and what interests them. With child-directed learning, you look to the child’s interests to determine what will inspire them,” says Evans. “When we find that an initial spark of interest is already there, we just fan the flames.”
