The Founder’s Celebration of Life Award was established in

2002 by Susie and Randy Byrnes to honor individuals who

celebrate the gift of life everyday and inspire others to do the

In 2011-2012, the Byrnes Health Education Center concluded

its journey as a signature partner of Highmark Healthy High 5,

a children’s health promotion

initiative of the Highmark

Foundation. During the five

and a half year partnership

we accrued many frequent

flyer miles as

LearntobeHealthy.org

reached students all over

the United States. We

experienced a little turbulence, but

LearntobeHealthy is taking the valuable lessons learned along

the way and is looking forward to smooth sailing as we

continue our travels educating and inspiring others on a

journey through a healthy life.

Year at a glance...

Growing and evolving - a journey, not a destination.

In the summer of 2011, the USDA released a new guide for

healthy eating called MyPlate. This replaced the 20 year old

MyPyramid, which was preceded by several other guides that

had been created and followed for 80 years prior! So chances

are that most of us have experienced at least three separate

variations of the food guide over our own lifetimes - what a

telling symbol of how health is ever evolving! While the core

content and eating guidelines of this new icon are the same

as its predecessor, the fresh new look translates more easily

to the dinner table. We updated 15 interactive activities on

our site to incorporate the new MyPlate icon.

Mapping our way through the standards.

LearntobeHealthy.org lessons are built around state Health

and Physical Education, Library and Technology, Language

Arts and Science education standards. This past year we

extended the mapping of our lessons to include National

Standards for Health, Physical Education, Technology and

Language Arts. From this we were able to identify a few

gaps in our curriculum and as a result we are developing

new lessons to bridge those gaps. In doing this we are

positioning LearntobeHealthy.org to be a cost-effective,

technology-driven replacement to traditional health

education textbooks which provides "real-time" updates

to ever changing health education information.

A new direction into the future.

LearntobeHealthy.org has always

focused on educating students, and

now we are furthering our reach to

educate and inspire adults as well.

Our health passport for students is

now evolving for adults. With the

addition of the Adult Health Log,

members can use it to track their food

intake and exercise every day. The health log is linked to a

calorie counter so members can keep track of their caloric

intake, which can help them in meeting their health goals

and stay on track in their travels.

LTBH expands our mission and reach.

With our site growing and changing throughout the travels

of our Highmark Healthy High 5 partnership, our

memberships have changed as well. Whether setting sail

on the open seas or navigating through the waters of

health education we know that every trip is special and

unique in its own way, which is why we are now offering

custom group memberships to schools

and groups. Our custom group

memberships are specifically designed

to allow the “captain” to designate how

many students will be onboard the

(member)ship. No matter how large or

small a group is, LearntobeHealthy.org

will lead its members and students

toward a healthy destination!
