EPIC Adventures is the EWU outdoor program offering outdoor and adventure trips, classes,

events, rentals and a climbing wall for students. Our programs are designed for all ability levels, and we specialize in introducing people to new activities. From backpacking to ice climbing, canoeing to whitewater kayaking, we provide activities that range from relaxing jaunts to full-on adventures. You can sign up for as many or as few trips, classes, or events as you like, so pick one (or two or eight) and get started.

This summer we added more tents, standup paddleboards, whitewater kayaks, and backpacks to our rental fleet. Also, we revamped the Annual Pass, added some new training courses and are now offering freestyle snowboarding

minicamps (if we get enough snow). Look for big spring-break trips, new destinations for weekend trips and a lot of standup paddleboarding day trips. Get ready for an adventurous year!

Once a year we shut down the wall for a day to host a competition as part of the Northwest Collegiate Climbing Circuit (NC3). Over 60 unique boulder problems await competitors. This comp is open to all EWU students and includes categories for beginner, intermediate,

advanced, and open climbers as well as divisions for male and female competitors. New this year will be an additional (and separate) bouldering facility area!

January 28, 2012(Current students only)

EPIC puts on or takes part in a few other big events throughout the year. For instance we will be a part of the RecSplosion event put on by Campus Recreation in the University Recreation Center on September 18.

There are plans in the works to put together an EWU Bouldering (rock climbing) Competition sometime during the Fall quarter. Stay tuned for that one. Every winter for the last quarter-century, EPIC has

put on a Hill Climb race that involves climbing up then skiing or snowboarding down 49 degrees North. It’s part of Winterfest. Other events will be announced as they’re planned.

About the WallOur wall contains 1,200 square feet of top-rope climbing surface as well as two overhanging boulder walls. We even have simulated ice climbing offered seasonally (November – Mid February). EWU prides itself for having one of the strongest climbing communities in the Northwest. In fact, our students have been responsible for winning the Northwest Collegiate Climbing Circuit (NC3) the last two years in a row.

Getting StartedThe Climbing Wall is open and free for all Eastern students and is the perfect place to begin or advance your climbing career. First time users will have to go through a short orientation but afterwards are able to boulder and use our equipment free of charge. In order to top-rope at our gym, you must show proficiency in correctly putting on a harness, tying into a rope using a figure 8 knot and controlling slack using the brake-under-slide belay method. If you do not possess these skills, we offer free classes regularly. Just ask our staff or check out our website for the current programming schedule.

Classes for CreditIf you feel like spicing up your class schedule a bit consider adding a climbing class. We offer one day a week credited introductory to advanced skills classes as well as a fast-fitness style class called Climb Time. Classes include Intro to Rock Climbing, Sport Lead Climbing, Traditional Lead Climbing, Climbing Clinic, Efficient Climber’s Toolbox, Climbing Self Rescue, Climbing Anchors, Climb Time and Climb Time II.

We are always looking for com-petent, professional individuals to work at our Climbing Wall. We take applications through-out the year but require that all employees be certified Climb-ing Wall Instructors by either the AMGA or PCIA.

CWI Courses are offered at our wall during the fall and spring so stop by EPIC Adventures or the Climbing Wall for more information.

Buy a year of adventure and get a huge discount. Our trips are already

very inexpensive... perfect for the average university student’s budget. If you buy an annual pass, you get an even better deal.

An annual pass costs $200 and buys you 600 points good towards any trips, classes, or rental gear offered by EPIC Adventures. The number of points each trip “costs” is noted with an (AP); going backpacking to Blossom Lake, for example, will cost you 50 of your annual pass points or (AP50). If you use up your pass, you can recharge it. When you recharge your pass, 100 points costs $50, so you are still getting a killer deal.

Spend all your points in the fall and spring if you like the river, or spend ‘em all in the winter if you’re a skier or snowboarder. It’s your choice.

If you signed up early for housing and got the early sign-up bonus, you will have a total of $100 EPIC Bucks to put towards your annual pass, a trip, class or rental gear.
