Parent‐Teacher Conferences: Parent‐Teacher Conferences are scheduled on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00 and on Thursday, February 2, from 2:00 to 8:00. Students will have a full day of school on Wednesday, February 1st, but students do not have school on February 2nd. NOTE: Parents who attend Parent Teacher Conferences will receive a homework pass from each teacher with whom they conference. Your child will then be able to use this pass for a teacher approved assignment. Thank you for being involved in your child’s education. Online Sign Up for Conferences: On Wednesday, February 1st, all parent‐teacher conferences will occur via sign up through our on line scheduling system. Only parents who sign up via the online sign up procedure will be able to meet with teachers on February 1st. Please see the last page of this newsletter for information pertaining to sign up procedures. NOTE: On Thursday, February 2nd, as in the past, all conferences for grades 6, 7 and 8 will be an open format. Parents may visit with teachers on a first come, first serve basis. Parents of 5th graders must still use the online sign up format available on our webpage. The PLMS PTO will be sending an email to 5th/6th grade parents in late January asking for contributions toward the teacher/staff meals during parent/teacher conferences. During the September conferences, the 7th/8th grade parents provided 2 wonderful meals allowing the staff to take a short break together for dinner. Please be watching for more information from the PTO representatives regarding the dinner menu and various ways in which you can contribute.
Please remember that our staff will NOT be available from 5:00 – 5:30pm on both nights!
Travel Program: Vietnam For over 30 years, Randy Nadler has traveled the globe. Studying and photographing cultures and wildlife for the purpose of putting together educational multimedia presentations for students of all ages.
His main focus for schools is to provide a fun and also very educational cultural arts program to enhance the guidelines provided by the state department of education for both geography and social studies.
Randy's presentations are approximately one hour in length and consist of using all state of the art digital projection with still images, video and audio with Randy giving a narrative to teach as much as possible in this learning experience.
Please feel free to join us for this informative lecture on Vietnam on February 7 at 1:00 in the PLHS Little Theatre beginning at 1:00pm.
Owl Prowl On December 11
th, fifth graders in Ms. Levi‐Mehl’ s class went on an “Owl Prowl” at Ms. Levi‐
Mehl’s house. We sat outside from about 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm listening to a tape of barred owl sounds. The weather was chilly, but everyone dressed warmly. Although we didn’t see any, we did enjoy the beautiful weather. Afterward, we ate hotdogs and stood around the campfire. Maybe next year?
Appointments and Planned Absences – State Testing
Setting the state testing schedule at the middle school requires focusing a number of resources during the months of March and April. We coordinate teachers, paras, and volunteers, with computer labs and available classrooms to create a unique schedule to accommodate the needs of all students. Since the state requires that all students must be tested in math and reading, as well as 7th grade students in science, we request that when scheduling appointments or any absence for your child, that you do so outside the established testing schedule and make every effort to schedule absences after all testing is complete.
Seventh and eighth grade students will complete both the Kansas Math and Reading Assessments on April 11, 12 and 13. Also, seventh grade students will complete the Kansas Science Assessment on April 4th and 5th. Our eighth graders will complete the Kansas Social Studies Assessment on April 3rd. Please do not schedule absences on these dates. Fifth and sixth grade students will complete the Kansas Reading Assessment on March 28, 29 and 30, followed by the Kansas Math Assessment on April 3, 4 and 5. Sixth grade students will complete the Social Studies assessment on Tuesday, April 10th. Please do not schedule absences on these dates.

Annual 6th Grade Snow Creek Trip The annual trip to Snow Creek in Weston, Missouri is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th. The buses will leave PLMS at 8:20 and return at 5:00. Our PTO will contribute $6.00 per student towards the cost of the lift tickets. If you have questions please contact your child’s teacher for more specific information.
Feed Your Reader at our Tropical Book Fair! The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the PLMS library from January 27 ‐
February 3rd, during school and during Parent Teacher conferences. When you come to conference with your child's teachers, be sure to stop by the library to fill out an entry for a chance to win $20 to spend at the book fair. Can't come to the fair? Check out the online book fair with books and more for all ages (web address and online fair dates will be sent home with students after 10/13). During the fair, we will be participating in the Scholastic "One for Books" program. Donations into the "One for Books" collection box help in two ways: they provide new books to the library AND Scholastic matches the funds with donations to three worthy children's charities. All sales and donations, no matter how small, help provide the library with new materials for everyone to enjoy so we sincerely appreciate your support. EXPLORE Test Results: Prior to taking the ACT in high school, students take the PLAN test in 10th grade and this year our 8th graders took the EXPLORE which is a College and Career Readiness Program. It is a great way to get a head start on the ACT. Kansas believes strongly in the importance of ACT preparation and paid for every Kansas 8th grader to take the EXPLORE for free!
On January 12th, Mrs. Hupe will visit Mrs. Doleman’s 8th grade Social Studies classes to share and interpret student’s EXPLORE results that were taken in November. Students will receive their report, and two booklets; Using your Explore Results and their EXPLORE test booklet. Results were mailed along with your 8th grader’s report card. At that time we hope you talk to your child about this important document. If you have further questions, please call, e‐mail or visit with Mrs. Hupe during Parent/Teacher conferences Feb. 1st and 2nd.
Early Arrival: The student handbook says that the front doors at PLMS open at 7:45. We do open the doors a bit early if raining or unreasonably cold, but please make every attempt to drop your child off as close to 7:45am as possible.
Telephone or Address Changes: Please inform the office if your work or home phone number OR your address changes. In the event of an emergency, we want to reach parents as quickly as possible. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Early School Dismissal: If inclement weather strikes, Dr. Yoder, the Superintendent of Schools, will make the decision, after due consideration of all factors, to send students home early.
School Reach (automated phone messaging service) will be initiated to call all designated parent‐guardian phone numbers.
Media will be notified: WDAF TV ‐ Kansas City, TV Channel 4, WIBW ‐ Topeka, TV Channel 13, radio 580 AM and 94.5 FM.
Parents of students at either building may send special instructions to the office for early dismissal. We will keep those instructions on file. It is important that we reduce incoming and outgoing phone calls to those to only those that deal with getting our students safely to the proper destination.
On bus routes, drivers determine that a student can get into their house before they leave each drop point.
An administrator will remain at the school phone until all buses have delivered students home.
Guaranteeing every student’s safety is our priority.
Weekly Email: The PLMS principal sends out a weekly email to interested parents, guardians and/or other interested community members. This email contains information such as scheduled field trips, extracurricular activities, assemblies, and the weekly schedule in general. If you are not receiving this weekly email but would like to be included, please send an email to [email protected] Be sure to include your name and the name of each of your children attending PLMS.
Daily Announcements: Want to stay in touch with what is going on at the Middle School on a daily basis? Please remember that you can access the PLMS daily announcements through Power School. To access Power School, go to the district website, (www.usd343.org) and click on the Power School – Parent/Student icon on the right side of the page. Use your parent user name and password to gain access. The announcements can be found under the “School Bulletin” icon. They are updated every morning, so it is a great way to keep up with what is going on.
Power Hour: Have you heard of Power Hour? Power Hour is a designated one‐hour time slot occurring immediately after school and offers academic support to students who have been identified by their teacher as possibly needing assistance in math and/or reading. Parents who feel that their student might benefit from this time should contact their child’s teacher. Power Hour runs from 3:30 – 4:30pm, Monday through Thursday. NOTE: The district does provide transportation for Power Hour.
Site Council: The next meeting will be on February 23rd at 6:00pm in the PLMS Media Center. Again, attendance is open and new ideas are welcome.
Fall Semester Awards Assembly: The 7/8 Fall Awards Assembly was held on January 13 at 2:00pm. Athletic letters and certificates were presented for participation in sports. Academic recognition was given to students who have achieved membership on the school Honor Roll as well as those who have earned High Honors and Kaw Honors. Lastly, students were presented with Exemplary Certificates for their achievement on the 2011 Kansas State Math, Reading and Science Assessments.
Directed Studies: Have you heard that expectations for directed studies have changed? Actually, the intent of directed studies is to provide academic directions for all PLMS students through academic assistance and/or tutorial opportunities. At the 5/6 level, directed studies is used as an extension to math and reading subject areas. What this means is that we give 5/6 students additional time to work on weak skills in both reading and math. We believe that this helps our students better prepare for the Kansas State Assessments. At the 7/8 level, directed studies is utilized differently because we have staff members who are departmentalized by subject area, much like a high school. As part of our school improvement goal, we have students reading for 1/2 the period, three times per week and working on math computation skills, including tutorial videos, the other two days per week. The second half of all five days is still used for study hall at the 7/8 level or student may visit specific teachers will the appropriate hall pass.
