News and NotesManhattan meets Fordham for the 104th “Battle of the Bronx”. At halftime

Manhattan will honor the 2011 baseball team that won the Metro Atlantic AthleticConference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Jasperswill be presented their championship rings.

Manhattan enters the contest with Fordham winning its last two games,including a 68-42 rout of Saint Peter’s on Sunday. Jaspers’ guard George Beamonled all scorers with 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting against the Peacocks. Beamon cur-rently leads all of NCAA Division I in free-throw shooting going 37-for-38 (97.4%) fromthe line this season. He ranks sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference averag-ing 16.1 points per game.

Jaspers’ sophomore forward Rhamel Brown anchored the Jaspers’ bencheffort against Saint Peter’s as he finished with seven points, nine rebounds and acareer-high six blocks. Brown leads the MAAC with 2.4 blocks per game. In the lastfour contests, Brown is averaging 4.5 blocks, a team-high 7.0 rebounds and 7.5points.

Manhattan has won seven of its last 10 meetings in its local rivalry withFordham. In their last meeting at Draddy Gymnasium on Nov. 28, 2009 Jaspers’guard Antoine Pearson posted a game-high 16 points en route to a 68-44 victory.Pearson shot 6-for-8 from the field and received the John ‘Doc’ Johnson MostValuable Player Award.

The Jaspers upcoming four game road stretch consists of three straightgames with the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) members. Manhattan hasHofstra (Dec. 10), Towson (Dec. 20) and George Mason (Dec. 23), before roundingout December at Binghamton (Dec. 30).

Manhattan is coming off a pair of MetroAtlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) wins afterlimiting Rider and Saint Peter’s to 48.5 points pergame. The Jaspers have produced five wins intotal under first year head coach Steve Masiello’snew up-tempo style. Manhattan has gone at least10 players deep in each of their nine games thisseason.

The Jaspers lead the MAAC in fieldgoal percentage defense (40.2%) and rank sec-ond in free-throw shooting with a 72.9% teammark. Manhattan is third in the conference with37.2 rebounds per game and sit second with+4.4 rebounding margin. Manhattan has won thebattle of the boards in six of its last seven gamesand have a outrebounded their last three oppo-nents 115-83 (+10.6 margin per game).

The Jaspers are led by junior guardGeorge Beamon who is averaging a team-high16.1 points per game, which ranks sixth in theMAAC. Beam leads NCAA Division I in free-throwshooting with a 97.4% (37-38) mark at the charitystripe. Beamon has hit 27 straight free-throwattempts and has not missed at the line sinceNov. 21, 2011 in the Jaspers’ 85-83 victory overFresno State in the NIT Season Tip Off. Beamonis shooting 46.1% from the field and he is aver-aging 5.0 rebounds per game.

Senior Roberto Colonette and sopho-more Rhamel Brown have anchored the Jasperspost production. Colonette is Manhattan’s toprebounder with 6.8 boards per game, going alongwith a 7.8 scoring average through nine gamesthis season. Brown has been dominant off theManhattan bench in the last two contests averag-ing 8.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks.Brown is one of the top shot blockers in thecountry as he is averaging a MAAC best 2.4rejections per contest.

Jaspers’ point guard Michael Alvaradohas worked his way into the starting line up forthe last five contests. As a starter, Alvarado isaveraging 10.8 points and 3.2 assists, whileshooting 80% (20-25) at the free-throw line. The2011 All MAAC Rookie Team honoree erupted fora season-high 22 points at Colorado State onNov. 22.

Seniors Kidani Brutus and LiamMcCabe-Moran have led Manhattan in 3-pointshooting. Brutus, a co-captain from the Bronx,has a team-high 15 3-point field goals and isaveraging 7.2 points per game. McCabe-Moran isshooting a team-high 44.0% (11-25) from beyondthe arc. The 6’4”, 190-pound guard is averaging6.2 points per game.

Freshmen Emmy Andujar and DonovanKates have been key contributors in the Jaspersline up. Andujar is the only Manhattan player tostart all nine games this season. He is averaging7.4 points and 5.4 rebounds. Kates is a 6’6”sharp shooter from Hopkinsville, Ky. who is aver-aging 5.1 points per game.

FordhamFordham enters the contest winning two

of its last three games, including a 54-53 homevictory over Hampton on Monday. The Rams areled by junior forward Chris Gaston who is nearlyaveraging a double double with 14.3 points and9.8 rebounds per game.

Rams freshman guard Devon McMillanhas led the Fordham backcourt averaging 12.5points and 3.0 assists in six starts this season.Branden Frazier, a 6’1” sophomore guard, is thethird Ram who is averaging double-figures thisseason with 10.8 points per game.

Kervin Bristol, a 6’10” 225-pound for-ward, is Fordham’s top rebounder with 8.0boards per game.

The Rams picked up all three of theirwins at home as Fordham is 0-2 on the road thisseason. Fordham is coach by Tom Pecora who isin his second season.

Manhattan delivered a dominant perform-ance on Sunday as the Jaspers cruised to a 68-42victory over defending Metro Atlantic AthleticConference champion Saint Peter’s. Jaspers’ juniorguard George Beamon exploded for a season-high22 points on 7-for-9 shooting and he came up withfour steals as Manhattan won its second straightleague contest.

The Jaspers led by as many as 29 pointsin the second half. Sophomore forward RhamelBrown tied a career-high with six blocks, to goalong with seven points and nine rebounds. Seniorguard Liam McCabe-Moran and freshman guardDonovan Kates also chipped in seven pointsapiece off the Manhattan bench. Jaspers’ freshmanEmmy Andujar scored nine points and had threerebounds in 34 minutes of action.

Manhattan outrebounded Saint Peter’s37-26 and the Jaspers shot 48.9% (23-47) in theirsecond home victory of the season. Manhattanshot 55.6% (15-27) from the field in the secondhalf.

Manhattan fell 73-59 in the 103rd “Battleof the Bronx” at Rose Hill Gym. The Jaspers’ wereled by point guard Michael Alvarado who had 19points. Fordham senior guard Brenton Butlertopped all players with 21 points.

Jaspers’ guard George Beamon finishedwith a double-double scoring 12 points and grab-bing 11 rebounds. Rhamel Brown had nine points,nine rebounds and five blocks to lead theManhattan front court.

Three Rams joined Butler in double-fig-ures scoring with Alberto Estwick contributing 14points, Chris Gaston had 13 and Kervin Bristoldelivered 11 along with a game-high 16 rebounds.

Series HistoryManhattan and Fordham collide for the

104th meeting of their cross-Bronx rivalry. TheJaspers and Rams have met each season datingback to 1922-23, with the exception of 1943-44 and1944-45 due to World War II.

The Jaspers have won seven of the last10 meetings with Fordham. Manhattan earned a68-44 victory in the last meeting at DraddyGymnasium on Nov. 28, 2009. Antoine Pearsonscored a game-high 16 points on 6-for-8 shootingto lead Manhattan. Pearson received the John“Doc” Johnson Most Valuable Player Award.

Manhattan and Fordham first met duringthe 1911-12 season as the Jaspers escaped with a20-19 win. The Jaspers led the all-time series 53-50. Manhattan first year head coach Steve Masiellowas a part of four straight victories over Fordhamas an assistant on the Jaspers’ staff from 2001-02to 2004-05.

Beamon of Light

Junior guard George Beamon enjoyed a breakout 2010-2011 campaign wherehe proved himself as one of the top players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference andin the metropolitan area. Beamon led the Jaspers and ranked third in the MAAC in scoringlast season, averaging 16.3 points per game. A native of Roslyn, N.Y., Beamon started 30of 31 appearances, which included 28 double-digit scoring performances and he led theManhattan in scoring in 18 games.

Beamon earned All-MAAC Third Team honors and All-Metropolitan Third Teamrecognition last season. He averaged 6.1 rebounds per contest and was 10th in theMAAC with a 73.8% free-throw percentage. Beamon led Manhattan with eight 20-pointperformances, including a career-high 35 points in a victory over Siena on Feb. 13. He fin-ished with a team-high 45 steals and ranked fourth in the league averaging 1.5 steals pergame. Beamon also harbored a 43.7% field goal mark and was third in the MAAC logging36.8 minutes per game.

Yo u t h M o v e m e n t

Manhattan sophomores Michael Alvarado and Rhamel Brown burst onto thescene in 2010-2011 and were major contributors as rookies. They are expected to leadanother youth movement this season, along with freshman forward Emmy Andujar whocomes to Riverdale after a successful four year career at Rice High School.

Alvarado was named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team after posting 11.2 points pergame, which was the 17th highest scoring average in the conference. The 6’2”, 185pound point guard from the Bronx started 23 of 26 appearances and was 10th in theMAAC with 3.2 assists per game. Alvarado was also the Jaspers top free-throw shooteras he logged a 78.2% free-throw mark. He posted 12 double-digit scoring performances,including 20+ point efforts.

Brown is a raw talent who developed rapidly as he logged more minutes lastseason. The 6’6” 215-pound Brooklyn native started 25 of 31 appearances for the Jaspersand led the MAAC averaging 2.2 blocks per game. Brown corralled a team-high 7.1rebounds per contest, which tied for fifth in the conference. He finished with a 6.7 scoringaverage, while leading the Jaspers with a .506 field goal percentage.

Andujar is a 6’5” 205-pound versatile player from the Bronx. He helped guideRice to the 2011 CHSAA Class AA championship game averaging 12.3 points, 7.8rebounds and 3.9 assists as a senior. Andujar is an inside-outside player who can fill thestat sheet.

Draddy Gymnasium will playhost to two national broadcasts on ESPN3.com as part of the MAACTV package. The MAAC Men’s Basketball Championships will be televised, withthe championship game airing on an ESPN family network for the 27th consecutive year. Manhattan’s BracketBuster contest may be televised.

Jaspers’ sophomore forwardRhamel Brown engraved his name in theManhattan men’s basketball record book lastseason. The 6’6” forward recorded 68blocks, which ranked the second all-time fora single season only behind Arturo Dubois(74 - 2005-06). It was the highest total everby a Jasper freshmen and he led the MetroAtlantic Athletic Conference averaging 2.2blocks per game. Brown is now in the top-10on the program’s career blocks list.

Jaspers’ senior guard Kidani Brutus returned to his hometown the Bronxlast season after playing his first two collegiate years at Carl Albert State Collegein Poteau, Okla. for head coach Mike St. John. The 6’1” shooting guard, whoplayed high school ball at Wings Academy, just five miles away from ManhattanCollege, started 25 of 31 appearances and averaged 9.5 points per game. Thesharpshooter hit a team-high 63 3-pointers, ranking seventh in the MAAC with 2.0treys per game. Brutus was named team co-captain by first year head coachSteve Masiello, along with junior guard George Beamon. Brutus trimmed off 25pounds in the off-season with a strenuous training program.

The Manhattan men’sbasketball team was selected to finisheighth according to the 2011-2012 MAACPreseason Coaches’ Poll as revealed at theleague’s Preseason Awards Show on Oct.25 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hallof Fame in Springfield, Mass. Jaspers’ juniorguard George Beamon was named to thePreseason All-MAAC Second Team afteraveraging 16.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in2010-2011.

Coach Mahoney Returns to Jasper Radio Team

Manhattan alumnus Brian Mahoney returns to the microphone for the2011-2012 season as the Jaspers analyst. Mahoney, a 1971 graduate, wasManhattan’s head men’s basketball coach from 1978-81. An accomplishedstudent-athlete, Mahoney was inducted into the Manhattan College AthleticHall of Fame in 1998. He scored 1,289 points over his four year playingcareer (1968-71) and ranks 14th on the program’s all-timescoring list. Following a senior campaign where he averaged 20.6 points pergame and earned All-East honors, Mahoney was drafted by the ClevelandCavaliers in the fifth round of the NBA Draft. Mahoney also served as thehead men’s basketball coach at St. John’s and was named Big East Coach ofthe Year in 1993. In 2004-05, Mahoney was named one of the Top-20 Jaspersfrom the first 100 years.

Jaspers in the Hal l

Coinciding with the MAAC Championships moving to the MassMutual Center inSpringfield, Mass. through 2014, a 600-square foot permanent display dedicated to the con-ference opened at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in late October. The MAACExperience includes historical items and artifacts from the MAAC’s rich 30-year history. Inaddition, all 10 MAAC schools have their own display within the exhibit. Manhattan’s displayfeatures a commemorative No. 23 jersey worn by former Manhattan player, coach and athleticdirector Jack Powers ‘58, the former Executive Director of the NIT.

Powers was a standout player, totaling 1,139 points over his four year career atManhattan. As a player he helped lead the Jaspers’ to two NCAA tournaments, including arun in 1958 which saw them upset top ranked West Virginia with Powers’ 28 points. Powerswas a draft pick of the Syracuse Nationals.

He served as the Jaspers head men’s basketball coach for 10 years (1968-69 to1977-78) and guided Manhattan to six postseason appearances. Following his coachingtenure, Powers spent nine years as Manhattan’s athletic director. Powers also spent time onthe executive councils for both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and theIntercollegiate Basketball Association (MIBA). Additionally, he served as president of theMetro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Powers was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 andin 2006 he received the NACDA/NIT Athletics Director Award.

Manhat tan Integra tes Enhanced Ath le t i c Logos

As part of Manhattan College's new marketing and promotional campaign entitledThe Promise, the College introduced its newly enhanced primary athletic logos this summer.Working with SME Branding consultants, the traditional Block M logo was revamped, but stillretains a vintage look, which has been a mainstay throughout the athletic program's richhistory. Additionally, both a 'Manhattan' and a 'Jaspers' word mark were created to comple-ment the Block M logo.

Like the new College logo, the 'Jaspers' word mark displays the Lasallian Star ofFaith ("Signum Fidei") to symbolize the five core principles (faith in the presence of God,respect for all people, commitment to quality education, an inclusive community, and concernfor the poor and social justice) that guided the Christian Brothers in founding ManhattanCollege.

In its 106th season, the Manhattan College men’s basketball program boasts a1253-1121 (.528) overall record and 224-254 (.469) MAAC mark in 28 seasons as aconference member. The Jaspers storied men’s basketball team was established in 1904-05and served a two year hiatus due to World War II (1943-44 & 1944-45).

Draddy Gymnasium played host to several Jasper victories and memorable momentssince it opened in 1978. Manhattan holds a 233-171 (.577) all-time record atDraddy Gymnasium.

What ’s a Jasper?

The unique nickname of Manhattan College’s athletic teams, the Jaspers, comesfrom one of the College’s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., whoserved at the College in the late 19th century.

One of the greatest achievements of Brother Jasper was that he brought the then lit-tle-known sport of baseball to Manhattan College and became the team’s first coach. SinceBrother was also the Prefect of Discipline, he supervised the student fans at ManhattanCollege baseball games while also directing the team itself.

During one particularly warm and humid day when Manhattan College was playing asemi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans, Brother Jasper noticed the Manhattan stu-dents were becoming restless and edgy as Manhattan came to bat in the seventh inning of aclose game. To relieve the tension, Brother Jasper called time-out and told the students tostand up and stretch for a few minutes until the game resumed.

Since the College annually played the New York Giants in the late 1880’s and intothe 1890’s at the old Polo Grounds, the Manhattan College practice of the “seventh inningstretch” spread into the major leagues, where it has now become a time-honored custompracticed by millions of fans annually.

Head Coach Steve MasielloFirst SeasonManhattan College named Steve Masiello its 23rd head men's basketball coach in program his-tory on April 11, 2011. Masiello arrived back in his native New York after spending six years inthe Big East as an assistant at Louisville under head coach Rick Pitino. Over his six-yeartenure at Louisville, he helped lead the Cards to a 148-61 (.708) overall record, six straight 20-win seasons and four NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the Elite Eight twice (2008& 2009). Masiello played a vital role in building Louisville's 2009 Big East Championship teamwhich won 31 games, including a program record 16 in conference, and entered the NCAATournament as the No. 1 overall seed.

"I am honored and humbled to be the next coach of Manhattan College," stated Masiello. "I ameager to lead the Jaspers back to prominence as being a premier program in the conference,and re-establishing our rich tradition and winning history."

One of the nation's most renowned recruiters, Masiello effectively directed the Cards' recruitingefforts by signing four Top-20 recruiting classes, which included four McDonald's All-Americansover his time in Louisville. The Cards' 2008 recruiting class garnered a No. 4 national ranking,featuring 2008 USA Today High School National Player of the Year and future NBA playerSamardo Samuels.

Masiello was named one of the nation's Top 25 collegiate assistant coaches according toFoxSports.com (2010) & Rivals.com (2007). He managed the Cards' game preparation andscouting responsibilities for his last three years with the program as Louisville amassed a 76-29(.724) overall record, including a 39-15 (.722) mark in the Big East during this stretch.

"Steve has been a tireless worker in his six years at Louisville," explained Cardinals head coachRick Pitino. "I've seen him grow from a ball boy with the New York Knicks to an outstandingteacher of the game. I'm real proud of his efforts and I know he will do an unbelievable job turn-ing Manhattan back into a winner."

Masiello returns to Riverdale, where he helped lead Manhattan to three postseason appear-ances in four years (2001-05) as an assistant coach, which included two trips to the NCAATournament (2003 & 2004) and one to the NIT (2002). Under his tutelage, the Jaspers postedan 83-36 (.697) overall record and won the 2003 & 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic ConferenceChampionships. Masiello was a key contributor on the Jaspers' coaching staff which helpedlead Manhattan to its third NCAA Tournament victory in program history in 2004, defeatingFlorida in the First Round.

"Steve is a winner who has had success at each of his previous coaching stops and during hiscollegiate playing career at Kentucky," said Manhattan College Director of Athletics Bob Byrnes."We are extremely fortunate to hire a well-respected, highly experienced coach who is familiarwith building a winning tradition here at Manhattan College from his days as an assistant."

Prior to Manhattan, Masiello served as the administrative assistant at Tulane under head coachShawn Finney for one year (2000-01).

A 2000 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in communications, Masiello was afour-year member of the Wildcats' basketball team, playing under head coaches Rick Pitino(1996-97) and Tubby Smith (1997-2000). During his playing career, Kentucky went to the FinalFour twice (1997 & 1998), advancing to the National Championship game both times and win-ning the title in 1998. Masiello was named the Wildcats' co-captain his senior year.

Masiello hails from White Plains, N.Y., and attended Archbishop Stepinac High School. He com-pleted his final two years at the Harvey School in Katonah, N.Y., where he helped the basketballprogram win the New England Prep School Athletic Association Championship. Masiello alsoserved as a ball boy for the New York Knicks during his youth.

The Steve Masiello coaching era at Manhattan officially began with the Jaspers excitingcome from behind 62-48 victory over NJIT in Riverdale. Jaspers' junior guard GeorgeBeamon filled the stat sheet with his eighth career double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds),while freshman Donovan Kates helped power a second half scoring surge and finished with10 points in his collegiate debut.

Manhattan overcame a seven point second half deficit and stole all the momentum to closeout the contest with a 23-5 run over the final 7:39. Kates hot shooting sparked the Jasperscomeback bid. The 6'6" guard from Hopkinsville, Ky. poured in eight of the Jaspers' 10unanswered points in a game shifting rush. Kates buried two big 3-pointers, which bookend-ed Michael Alvarado's go ahead layup at 6:52 (44-43). He then topped the run off with a pairof free-throws as it all happened within a three minute span.

Senior forward Roberto Colonette also made a lasting impression in his Manhattan debut,after missing the entire 2010-11 campaign due to injury. Colonette anchored the Jaspers'bench production with 11 points and eight rebounds over 15 minutes of action. Manhattanfreshman forward Emmy Andujar contributed seven points and five rebounds, whileAlvarado added six points to the Jaspers' scoring column.

The Jaspers built as much as a nine point advantage in the first half, but it was quicklyerased by three consecutive 3-pointers by NJIT senior guard Arjun Ohri within a two minutestretch. Manhattan battled to salvage a 28-27 edge at intermission. Beamon had nine of his15 points at the break.

Highlanders' senior guard Isaiah Wilkerson caught fire in the second half scoring 16 of hisgame-high 23 points to help propel NJIT to a 39-32 lead by the 11:16 mark. Wilkersonaccounted for eight points in the Highlanders' 12-2 surge.

Manhattan took advantage back-to-back trips to the free-throw line to work its way withinstriking distance of regaining the lead. Four straight free-throws by Andujar and Colonettemade it a one possession ball game (41-39) and set the stage for Kates shooting spree.The Jaspers' capitalized at the line converting 24-of-31 free-throw attempts (77.4%) in theballgame to NJIT's 57.1% (8-14) mark at the stripe.

The victory marked the Jaspers' fifth straight season opening win over NJIT and Manhattanis now 74-32 (.698) all-time in openers.

Syracuse, N.Y.The Manhattan men's basketball team was outmatched by an experienced #5 Syracuseteam in the opening round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip Off at the CarrierDome. The Jaspers dropped a 92-56 decision in the 28th meeting all-time between the twoprograms. The Orange had five players post double-figures, including a game-high 17points from sophomore guard Dion Waiters. Jaspers' guard Kidani Brutus paced Manhattanwith 15 points on five 3-pointers and George Beamon added 14 points in a hard foughteffort.

The Jaspers jumped out to a five point lead and forced a pair of Syracuse turnovers in thefirst two minutes of action as the Orange had to adjust to their full court press. Syracuse (2-0) went on a 20-3 run over the next seven minutes as they pulled away with hot shooting.The Orange converted 57.9% (22-38) of their shots from the field and 53.8% (7-13) from 3-point territory in the first half.

Despite facing a 26-point deficit at the break, Manhattan batted the Orange until the finalhorn and played a stacked Syracuse line up within 10 points in the last 20 minutes.Manhattan's active defense limited the Orange to only 20% (2-10) shooting from downtownand 36.4% (12-33) from the field.

Manhattan sophomore forward Rhamel Brown posted six points, three rebounds and oneblock over 28 minutes of action. Brown and the other Jasper big men had their hands fullwith the Orange front court. Senior forward Kris Joseph, a 2010-2011 All-Big East honoree,finished with 15 points to become the 55th player in Syracuse history to reach the 1,000point plateau. Seven-foot center Fab Melo just missed a double-double with 11 points andnine rebounds.

Michael Alvarado led the Manhattan bench with six points to go along with three rebounds,while freshman Ryan McCoy added five points and two rebounds in his second collegiategame. Waiters' 17 bench points were complemented by Orange junior James Sourtherland's15 points on 5-for-8 shooting.

Manhattan came up with three big defensive stops in the final two minutes to hold off Brownand earn a 54-52 victory in the NIT Season Tip Off consolation round at the Carrier Dome inSyracuse, N.Y. Jaspers' freshman Emmy Andujar capped off his 11 point performance with aclutch bucket and then the go-ahead free-throw with just over two minutes remaining to liftManhattan past the Bears.

Jaspers' junior guard George Beamon anchored Manhattan's offensive effort delivering a sea-son-high 18 points, which also marked the 18th consecutive contest that he posted double-dig-its in scoring. Beamon buried four 3-pointers, grabbed four rebounds and dished out threeassists.

The see-saw battle featured 10 lead changes and five ties as the contest came down to thelast possession. Despite coming off a hard-fought effort against fifth-ranked Syracuse less than24 hours before, Manhattan charged out of the gate rushing to an 8-0 advantage four minutesinto the ballgame. Although, Brown's 3-pointers were falling in the first half at a 45.5% (5-11)rate as the Bears crawled back into the game to trail only 30-27 at intermission.

Manhattan captured its largest lead of the contest by the 16:08 mark in the second half, thanksto an 8-0 run featuring 3-pointers from Andujar and Beamon. Bears' sophomore reserveDockery Walker carried Brown in the second half shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field tostay close. The 6'7" sophomore forward from Dover, Del. finished with a double-double posting12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Jaspers swarming defense locked in on the Bears 3-point shooting in the second half limit-ing Brown to go just 1-for-8 (12.5%) beyond the arc. Manhattan's defense and fitness level wasmost evident in the final minute of play with the Jaspers maintaining a 53-52 advantage. Brownjunior guard Stephen Albrecht had two opportunities from downtown in the last 60 seconds, butboth were off the mark. With 10 seconds on the clock Beamon raced out to get a hand inAlbrecht's face as his potential go-ahead 3-point attempt was off the mark sealing the Jaspersvictory.

Senior guard Kidani Brutus scored nine points all on 3-pointers. He tied Andujar with sixrebounds and had two assists over 32 minutes. Jaspers' senior forward Roberto Colonettegave Manhattan a productive 15 minutes of work in the second half tallying all seven pointsand game-high seven rebounds.

The Manhattan full court defensive pressure helped force Brown into 17 turnovers in the game.The Jaspers scored 17 points off turnovers and also recorded 17 second chance points.

Fort Collins, Colo.Manhattan senior forward Roberto Colonette collected an offensive rebound and delivered the game-winning putback as the Jaspers defeated Fresno State 85-83 in Fort Collins, Colo. Colonette came up with his last second hero-ics to cap a wild finish in a 2011 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip Off consolation contest played at ColoradoState.

Five Jaspers scored in double-figures, including a game-high 14 points from freshman guard Donovan Kates.Colonette lifted Manhattan to its third win of the year by scoring 10 of his 13 points over 13 minutes in the secondhalf. He also dominated the glass for a game-high seven rebounds.

Manhattan led the Bulldogs by as many as 14 points with 3:13 minutes remaining before Fresno State sophomoreguard Kevin Olekaibe caught fire. He exploded for 22 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and posted 15points in the final 2:34. Olekaibe, the Bulldogs' leading scorer, converted three 3-pointers and shot a perfect 6-for-6from the free-throw line during this final stretch to tie the game at 83-83 when he completed a four-point play with 13seconds on the clock.

The resilient Jaspers answered back immediately as sophomore Michael Alvarado took the ball the length of thecourt, drew two defenders on a running jumper, which allowed Colonette to corral the rebound under the hoop andpost the game-winning lay up.

Alvarado finished with 12 points, junior guard George Beamon added 13 points and senior guard Liam McCabe-Moran scored a career-high 10 points. Manhattan had its best shooting performance of the season going 48.1% (25-52) from the field and 58.8% (10-17) from 3-point territory. The Jaspers bench overmatched the Fresno Statereserves outscoring them 37-24.

Manhattan used its defensive energy and pressure to battle back from an eight point first half deficit. Despite contain-ing Olekaibe for only three points in the opening stanza, the Jaspers trailed 37-33 at halftime.

McCabe-Moran got Manhattan's rally started in the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers just over four minutesinto the period. Soon after, sophomore forward Rhamel Brown threw down a two handed jam to give Manhattan itsfirst lead of the half. Manhattan would not trail the rest of the game.

The Jaspers got off and running midway through the stanza using a 24-10 run over a nine minute span to take itslargest lead of the contest 73-59 on Brown's layup with 3:13 remaining. Kates buried his third 3-pointer and scoredanother bucket to help power Manhattan's offensive surge. He had 10 second half points, shooting 3-for-4 from thefield. Brown finished with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting, he grabbed four rebounds and had two blocks.

Fresno State generated its late charge on two four-point plays by Olekaibe. The game came down to the wire afterColonette converted two free-throws with 20 seconds on the clock to give Manhattan an 83-79 advantage. On theBulldogs next trip down court Olekaibe buried his fifth 3-pointer and drew a foul on Colonette as he was falling away.He converted the free-throw to tie the game for the sixth time and set the stage for Colonette's game winning lay up.

Senior guard Kidani Brutus contributed eight points and three assists to Manhattan's winning effort. Jaspers' sopho-more center Kevin Laue was a major defensive presence off the bench at the end of the first half as he blocked twoshots, grabbed a rebound and sank a free-throw in five minutes of work.

The Manhattan men's basketball team left it all on the court at Colorado State in a Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season TipOff consolation round contest. The Jaspers battled all the way back from a 15 point halftime deficit to force overtime, butManhattan came up short falling 91-86 to the Rams at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo.

Jaspers' sophomore guard Michael Alvarado dominated the second half scoring 20 of his team-high 22 points in the final 20minutes of regulation. Alvarado buried the game-tying 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining to force overtime and top off theJaspers' 57 point second half scoring spree.

Colorado State junior guard Wes Eikmeier scored six of his game-high 23 points in overtime as the Rams managed to holdoff the Jaspers. Eikmeier shot 11-for-12 from the free-throw line, contributing to the Rams 43 point feast at the charitystripe. Colorado State converted 79.6% (43-54) of its free-throw attempts.

Four other Jaspers joined Alvarado with double-figures in the scoring column, including senior forward Roberto Colonettewho recorded his first career double-double. One night after knocking down the game winning bucket to defeat FresnoState, Colonette exploded for career-highs with 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Manhattan freshman forward Emmy Andujar posted 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting and seven rebounds. Sophomore guardGeorge Beamon scored double-figures for the 20th straight contest dating back to last season and senior Liam McCabe-Moran matched his career-high that he set the previous night with 10 points.

The Jaspers were set back 37-22 at halftime after Colorado State junior guard Dorian Green erupted for 10 of his 17 pointsin the stanza. Manhattan gradually climbed back in the second half using its high pressure defense to get in striking dis-tance. With 3:06 on the clock, Andujar converted a lay-up to bring the Jaspers within 70-62 sparking Manhattan's 19-9 scor-ing surge to close regulation.

Andujar and Alvarado combined for 16 of Manhattan's last 19 points of regulation, while McCabe-Moran buried a clutch 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to bring Manhattan within 77-76. Colorado State junior forward Greg Smith made a pairof free-throws on the next trip down floor to set the stage for Alvarado's game-tying 3-pointer. The Rams last 15 points overthe final 6:28 of regulation all came from the free-throw line.

After Smith's second free-throw pierced the net, the Jaspers gave the ball to Alvarado who raced to the top of the key andburied a contested 3-pointer to send the contest to overtime. Alvarado shot a sweltering 7-for-8 in the second half, 5-for-5 atthe free-throw line and he dished out four of his season-high five assists.

Eikmeier knocked down two jumpers in the first two minutes of overtime and Rams' junior guard Jesse Carr added anotherfield goal as Colorado State quickly grabbed a five point advantage that it managed to hang on to. Carr finished with 10points, Smith added 13 points and senior guard Kaipo Sabas led the Rams' bench with 11 points.

Manhattan received seven points from freshman guard Donovan Kates and four assists from senior guard Kidani Brutuswho played a limited 16 minutes due to foul trouble. For the second straight night, the Jaspers received good defensiveproduction off the bench from junior Kevin Laue. The 6'11" center swatted two shots and grabbed one rebound.

The Jaspers won the battle of the boards 31-23 and scored 26 points in the paint. Manhattan finished shooting 49% (25-51)from the field and had nine 3-pointers. Colorado State harbored a 52.5% (21-40) field goal percentage and went 6-for-9from downtown.

Fort Collins, Colo.Junior guard Brian Barbour scored a game-high 22 points as Columbia knocked off the Manhattanmen's basketball team at Draddy Gymnasium. Coming off a four game road series and without theservices of leading scorer George Beamon (14.8 ppg), who was sidelined with an injury, Manhattancould not find its shooting rhythm as the Jaspers suffered their first home loss of the year. Manhattanfreshman forward Emmy Andujar scored seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while senior forwardRoberto Colonette scored in double-figures for the third straight game finishing with a team-high 10points.

Columbia capitalized on 21 Manhattan turnovers converting them into 26 points. Manhattan also hadan off shooting night after going 48.5% from the field and 46.3% beyond the arc in its last two gamesagainst Fresno State and Colorado State. The Jaspers shot 26.2% (11-42) from the field against theLions and were just 2-for-16 (12.5%) from 3-point territory.

Jaspers' sophomore Rhamel Brown gave Manhattan some energy off the bench as he finished withseven points on 3-for-4 shooting and had a season-high five blocks. Brown moved into the top-10 ofthe Jaspers' career blocks list advancing to ninth place with 77 in his young career.

The Lions jumped out to a 15-2 advantage less than seven minutes into the contest and never lookedback. Manhattan pulled within eight points by halftime with Brown leading the Jaspers with all seven ofhis points and four blocks at the break.

Manhattan got to the free-throw line early in the second half to cut the deficit to 29-24 at the 14:57mark on Colonette's free-throw. But Columbia answered with 14 straight points, seven coming fromBarbour, over a five minute span to build its largest lead of the contest (19) and it was enough to holdoff the Jaspers.

Lions' freshman forward Alex Rosenberg was the only other player to post double-figures in the lowscoring affair. Rosenberg finished with 11 points, had five rebounds and knocked down two 3-pointers.Columbia junior forward John Daniels pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Manhattan could not hold on to a nine point advantage as the Jaspers surrendered a 75-72 decision toPenn at the Palestra. Junior guard George Beamon led Manhattan with 16 points coming off the bench.Jaspers' seniors Kidani Brutus and Liam McCabe-Moran chipped in 13 points apiece. Penn had fiveplayers post double-figures in scoring, including a game-high 20 points from senior guard Zack Rosenwho shot 7-for-12 and had five assists.

After getting off to a slow offensive start, Manhattan turned up the tempo midway through the first half.The Jaspers used a 16-4 run over a five minute span to counter back-to-back 3-pointers by theQuakers and erase a five point deficit. Brutus had eight of the 16 points during the run with two 3s, andthen he assisted McCabe-Moran's 3-pointer to cap the surge at 4:39 giving Manhattan a 28-21 advan-tage. Brutus extended Manhattan's lead to 39-30 with his third 3-pointer of the first half at the 1:03mark, its largest lead of the contest.

The Jaspers shot 11-for-15 (73.3%) from the field in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza to enterthe break with a 39-34 advantage. Manhattan's bench anchored the offensive production scoring 30 ofthe 39 points in the first half. Brutus had all 13 of his points at intermission.

Manhattan led by as many as six points in the opening four minutes of the second half, but Penn wouldnot go away. The Quakers made a six point rally with sophomore forward Marin Kukoc's 3-pointer, thena three point play from Rosen at 14:32 to start the momentum swing and lock the game at 44-44. Overthe next 10 minutes, the game featured five more ties and seven lead changes. The Quakers madetheir final push at the 4:03 mark when sophomore guard Miles Cartwright finished off a three point playto break a 61-61 tie giving Penn a lead it would not relinquish.

Cartwright and senior guard Tyler Bernardini combined for 14 of the Quakers last 16 points of thegame. Bernardini knocked down a decisive 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining to send Penn ahead 71-67.Manhattan would come up empty in its next trip down court. Out of a timeout, the Jaspers missed threeshot attempts as Cartwright then sealed the game with a pair of free-throws.

Cartwright had 14 points, Bernardini had 12 off the bench and Kukoc shot 3-for-3 beyond the arc finish-ing with 11 points in a reserve role. Penn capitalized at the charity stripe hitting 9-of-12 free-throws inthe final five minutes, while also grabbing five big offensive rebounds during the stretch.

Jaspers' sophomore Rhamel Brown scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shotsin 22 minutes off the bench. Freshman Emmy Andujar posted seven points, six rebounds and threeassists. Roberto Colonette pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go along with five points, andMichael Alvarado registered five points and four assists.

Lawrenceville, N.J.George Beamon and Michael Alvarado scored 17 points apiece to lift Manhattan to a 71-55 victory over Rider.Jaspers' forward Rhamel Brown delivered a monstrous effort off the bench filling the stat sheet with nine points,12 rebounds and five blocks as Manhattan earned its first win at Rider in nearly nine years.

The Jaspers previous victory at hostile Alumni Gymnasium dates back to first year head coach Steve Masiello'sterm as an assistant on the Manhattan staff. On Jan. 16, 2003, Luis Flores '04 exploded for 23 points asManhattan rolled to a 76-66 triumph.

This time Manhattan needed an all around effort with eight players getting in the scoring column and the Jaspers'bench outscoring the Broncs 26-6. Jaspers' senior guard Kidani Brutus erupted for seven of his nine points in thesecond half to help anchor the bench production.

The Jaspers found their shooting stroke from 3-point territory in the second half, after coming up empty in all eightshot attempts from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes. In a game that featured 12 ties and nine leadchanges, Manhattan made its key surge with 6:41 remaining using a string of back-to-back-to-back 3s. Brownthen capped the 12-2 run with a clutch 3-point play at 2:55 to send Manhattan ahead 57-44.

Manhattan went 5-for-9 (55.6%) from 3-point territory in the second half and converted 20-of-24 (83.3%) free-throws in the contest. The Jaspers also dominated the boards outrebounding Rider 40-26 as Manhattan also cap-italized on 14 second chance points.

Brown made his presence in the paint felt in the first half with three blocks to contribute to a superb defensiveeffort that propelled Manhattan into intermission with a 26-25 edge. The Jaspers defensive pressure limited Riderto only 26.9% (7-26) from the field and 1-for-15 (6.7%) beyond the arc in the opening stanza.

Manhattan trailed for only 13 seconds in the second half after Broncs' senior guard Jeff Jones buried a 3-pointerwith 15:18 on the clock to send Rider ahead 35-33. Beamon responded immediately for the Jaspers tying thegame for the 12th time with a layup to lock it at 35-35.

The Jaspers took control of the game's tempo during the ensuing minutes and outscored Rider 8-2 over the nextfive minutes. Senior guard Liam McCabe-Moran started the surge with a 3-pointer in front of the Manhattan benchto break the tie (38-35), and then with 9:23 on the clock Alvarado buried another trey to send the Jaspers aheadby six (43-37).

Rider wouldn't go away easy as sophomore Daniel Stewart made it a one possession game with a thunderousdunk in transition to bring the Broncs within 45-42 at 7:05. But it was only 24 seconds later that the Jaspers'answered with Brutus' big 3-pointer, which was followed by Alvarado's trey and then Beamon's three to open thefloodgates.

Stewart finished with 10 points and he was 5-for-6 from the field. Broncs' senior forward Novar Gadson led Riderwith 16 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Jonathon Thompson dished out a game-high seven assists forRider.

Jaspers' freshman Emmy Andujar contributed seven points, four rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes of action.McCabe-Moran had six points and three rebounds over 16 minutes off the bench.

Riverdale, N.Y.For the Manhattan College men's basketball team, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) season couldn'thave started any better. After winning at Rider for the first time in nine years, the Jaspers were just as impressivein their first home conference game. Manhattan used a dominating defensive performance to notch a 68-42 vic-tory over defending MAAC champion Saint Peter's at Draddy Gymnasium.

The lead changed hands six times in the early going until a George Beamon jumper midway through the first halfput the Jaspers up 13-12. That bucket started a 10-0 run that saw Manhattan build a nine-point advantage, 21-12, with 4:24 remaining before halftime.

The rally was sparked by the Manhattan defense, as Rhamel Brown had five blocks in the first half, energizingthe crowd more and more with each one, and the Jaspers held Saint Peter's without a field goal for a span ofmore than eight minutes during their run. Manhattan took its largest lead of the half when Michael Alvarado'sjumper made it 23-13 at the 3:06 mark, and the Jaspers took a 26-19 advantage into the locker room.

Manhattan extended its lead to 16 points after back-to-back-to-back treys from Emmy Andujar, Mohamed Koitaand Beamon early in the second half, and Saint Peter's would not pull any closer the rest of the way. With theJaspers in front 48-32 and 9:14 left on the clock, Beamon sank a pair of free throws to start a 16-3 run thatincreased the lead to 29 points, 64-35, with 2:56 remaining. After notching a 16-point victory at Rider, Manhattantopped Saint Peter's by 26 points, 68-42.

Beamon was the only Jasper in double figures, notching a game-high 22 points. He added four rebounds, twoassists and four steals. Andujar added nine points, while Liam McCabe-Moran, Donovan Kates and Brown con-tributed seven points apiece. Brown flirted with a triple-double, matching his career-high with six blocks to goalong with nine boards. Manhattan shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field and outrebounded Saint Peter's37-26. The Jaspers shot 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from three-point land and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) at the charitystripe.

Blaise Ffrench led the Peacocks with 17 points off the bench. Darius Conley added seven points to go along witha team-high five rebounds and three blocks. Saint Peter's was held without a three-point basket in the game,going 0-for-7 from downtown. Overall, the Peacocks shot 32.6 percent (14-of-43) from the field and 58.3 percent(14-of-24) at the line.

With the win, Manhattan moved to 2-0 in the MAAC for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
