SEASON NOTES
Men’s Basketball Season Preview 2011‐2012 Dan DeRose enters his second season at the helm of the Chowan University Men’s Basketball program. In his first season, the Hawks went 5‐22 overall and 4‐14 in CIAA play. They earned the #5 seed out of the CIAA north in the CIAA Tournament, where they lost their opening game, 67‐60, to Johnson C. Smith University. Chowan loses Charles Rhodes and Travis Williams to graduation. Rhodes became Chowan’s eighth 1,000 point scorer last season. He led the Hawks with 45 three‐pointers, and averaged 11.5 points per game. Williams started 11 games last season and shot a team‐high 83.7% from the free throw line. DeRose brings in a bunch of new talent for the 2011‐2012 campaign, starting with two new assistant coaches. Kenyan Weaks and J.R. Reid have joined the Hawks staff. Weaks was a standout at the University of Florida, where he finished his career ranked second in school history in three pointers made. J.R. Reid enjoyed a stellar career with the University of North Carolina before playing 12 years in the NBA. On the court, the Hawks will showcase 12 newcomers to the program (six freshmen and six transfers). Highlighting the freshman class is Ricardo Martin, a 6’6 post player from Airport High School in Columbia, South Carolina. As a senior, Martin averaged 14.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and was named First Team All‐Region. Headlining the transfers are Rickey Lamb and Antonio Reddic. Lamb played at Division I Mississippi Valley State University last year, where he average 3.0 points per contest and shot 42.3% from the field. Antonio Reddic averaged 25.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.2 steals per game at the Community College of Beaver County (PA). The 6’4 wing was a First Team All‐Region and First Team All‐State selection at CCBC. The Hawks return six players from last season, including four players who started at least 14 games. Leading scorer Quinton McDuffie returns
for his junior year after averaging 13.6 points per game last season. McDuffie also average 5.7 rebounds per game and shot 49.4% from the floor. Mark McGlone and Aaron Allen, two frontcourt players, combined to average over 11 points and three rebounds per contest a season ago. Point guard Greg Alston started 15 games as a freshman, while averaging 1.9 assists per contest and shooting 68.8% from the charity stripe. Chowan will begin the 2011‐2012 campaign in Johnstown, PA at the Pitt‐Johnstown Tournament on Friday, November 11th. Interesting Facts
• 2009‐10 marked the first season the Hawks played in the CIAA
• DeRose is the program’s 3rd head coach in four‐year program history (1993)
• Chowan won four of its final seven regular season games in 2010‐2011
• The Hawks led the CIAA with 14.3 assists per game a season ago
