MISSION STATMENTCOLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSSDEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS

The Mission of the Athletic Department of the College of the Holy Cross is to promote the intellectual, physical, and moral development of students. Through Division I athletic participation, our young men and women student-athletes learn a self-discipline that has both present and long-term effects; the interplay of individual and team effort; pride and self esteem in both victory and defeat; a skillful management of time; personal endurance and courage; and the complex relationships between friendship, leadership, and service. Our athletics program, in the words of the College Mission Statement, calls for “a community marked by freedom, mutual respect, and civility.” Besides teaching these virtues, a few sports played at Holy Cross have the added value of focusing alumni and student support and enhancing our reputation locally and nationally. While Holy Cross continues to commit itself to accomplishment in these sports, which are a rich part of our tradition, we choose to do so in a way that complements the pursuit of academic excellence. Holy Cross is committed to the guiding principles of the Patriot League, of which we are a founding member: presidential control of athletics; the cultivation of the ideal scholar-athlete; and participation in a wide variety of sports. Commitment to the last principle assures that the College sponsors, in a very evident way, gender equity. The department of athletics is also committed to com-pliance with all College policies and regulations involved in Division I membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. As a member of the NCAA, Holy Cross also advocates student-athlete welfare, diversity, gender equity, sportsman-ship, and ethical conduct in its athletic programs

It is important for prospective student-athletes to get in touch with the coaching staff as soon as possible. An e-mail or letter of inquiry into the program will initiate the recruiting process. Recruiting questionnaires for most sports are also available at www.GoHolyCross.com. The spring of your junior year or early senior year is the most appropriate time to contact the coach.

INTERVIEWSStudents are strongly encouraged to have admissions interviews. The offi ce offers interviews from the summer until Dec. 30. Alumni interviews in most metropolitan areas are available. Students must fi rst submit an application and indicate they would like an alumni interview before Dec. 1.

EARLY DECISIONStudents who are absolutely, 100 percent confi dent Holy Cross is their top college choice are encouraged to apply during the early decision process.

FINANCIAL AIDFinancial aid is awarded on the basis of need. Prospective student-athletes should complete the CSS Profi le Form in early fall.

NCAA ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATIONThe NCAA Eligibility Center certifi es academic eligibility and amateurism for all prospective student-athletes who wish to compete in intercollegiate athletics at the Division I or II level. Prospective student-athletes must register at https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter and complete the online release form. Prospective student-athletes must arrange for the appropriate national testing agency to send copies of standardized test scores (e.g., SAT or ACT) directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center. Prospects must also complete the amateurism questionnaire. An institution may not provide an offi cial visit to a prospective student-athlete until he or she registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

TELEPHONE CALLSAs per NCAA bylaw 13.1.3.1, institutional staff members may not telephone a prospect (or the prospect’s relatives

or legal guardians) prior to July 1 following the prospect’s completion of the junior year in high school. After July 1, institutional staff members may telephone a prospect once per week (measured Sunday through Saturday). The once-per-week limit applies to the entire institution.

VIDEO TAPESIn an attempt to make an accurate assessment as soon as possible, it is recommended that video tapes be forwarded to the coach’s attention as soon as possible. The video need not be an elaborate production. Some simple game or practice tape is suffi cient with you being easily identifi ed.

EVALUATIONSAs per NCAA bylaw 13.02.6.1, an evaluation is any off-campus activity designed to assess the academic qualifi cations or athletic ability of a prospect, including any visit to a prospect’s educational institution (during which no contact occurs) or the observation of a prospect participating in any practice or competition at any size. We are limited in our number of evaluations per prospective student-athlete.

CONTACTSAs per NCAA bylaw 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face encounter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contacts per prospective student-athlete.

OFFICIAL VISITSAccording to NCAA bylaw 13.7.1.2, a prospect may not make more than fi ve expense-paid visits to NCAA member institutions, regardless of the number of sports in which the prospect is involved. An institution may not provide an expense-paid visit to a prospect who has not presented the institution with a high school (or college) academic

transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT, a PACTPlus or an ACT test taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions. Prospects must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center prior to making an offi cial visit.

UNOFFICIAL VISITSAccording to NCAA bylaw 13.8.1, a prospect may visit an institution’s campus at the prospect’s own expense an unlimited number of times and may make an unoffi cial visit before the prospect’s senior year in high school.

DONAHUE ROWING CENTER The Donahue Rowing Center opened in 1992 as a center for rowing activities. It is located at the north end of Lake Quinsigam-ond in Shrewsbury, Mass. The center was constructed with a com-bination of a grant from the Massachusetts Offi ce of Environmental Affairs and private contributions, most notable of which was that of the Irving James Donahue, Jr., family for approximately 20 percent of the $1.1 million project cost. In 2002 the center was expanded by four bays thanks to a generous donation from the Donahue family and the cooperation of the Alumni Association. It is the home to a number of schools and the Quinsigamond Rowing Association. The bays in this state of the art facility allow for the housing of more than 150 boats, plus oars and other equip-ment.

HOLY CROSS ROWING FACILITIESHOLY CROSS ROWING FACILITIES

LAKE QUINSIGAMOND Competitive rowing teams fi rst came to Lake Quinsigamond in 1857. Finding the lake ideal for such crew meets, avid rowers established boating clubs on the lake’s shores, the fi rst being the Quinsigamond Boating Club. In 1952, the lake played host to the National Olympic rowing trials. Lake Quinsigamond is currently considered the fourth best natural body of water for rowing in the world. The lake has played host to other national regattas such as the U.S. Nationals in 1979 and the U.S. Masters Nationals in 2005. At least six championship regattas are held on the lake each year in-cluding the Big East Championship, Patriot League Championship, New England Fours Regatta, New England Rowing Championship, Men’s Eastern Sprints Regatta and New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Regatta.

HART RECREATION CENTER / HOLY CROSS FIELD HOUSE The men’s and women’s rowing teams take advantage of the facilities at the Hart Recreation Center for indoor practice and conditioning. The Hart Center houses the Carol and Park B. Smith Wellness Center — a state of the art training facility designed for use by Crusader varsity athletes and the Holy Cross community in general. The Hart Center also contains a set of crew tanks for offseason and poor weather training. The Crusaders also practice in a new erg room in the Holy Cross Field House.

  • 55 2011-2012 HOLY CROSS MEN’S 2011-2012 HOLY CROSS MEN’S ROWINGROWING Holy Cross has a long history of community involvement and service. On September 13, 2009, members of nine Crusader athletic teams partici-pated in the 11th annual Walk to Cure Cancer in Worcester, Mass., which raised money for the UMass Memorial Cancer Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The women’s rowing team received Campus Challenge honors for organizing the most participants (32) from Holy Cross, in addition to raising the most money of any group on campus ($2,290). The Walk to Cure Cancer is the largest, single-day fundraising event in central Massachusetts. Funds raised sup-port cutting-edge research and wide-ranging pre-ventive and behavioral studies to provide advanced cancer care to oncology patients. The UMass Me-morial Cancer Center integrates some of the most vital cancer research and treatment activities avail-able today. The center encourages innovative col-laborations and actively promotes the development of projects dedicated to bringing the work of the bench to the bedside. To date, the fi ve mile walk-a-thon has raised over $6 million enabling cutting edge cancer research, bringing us one step closer to fi nding a cure. In October of 2009, coaches and athletes from both rowing teams put on three sessions on “Navigating the College Recruiting Process” and “Balancing the Academics and Athletics at the Col-legiate Level”. The presentation was given for the MSSAA (Massachusetts Secondary School Ad-

ministrators Association) at their Fall Conference for the National Honor Society (NHS) held at the Hogan Center at Holy Cross. In March of 2010, members of both rowing teams helped clean and extend the East Side Trail System through Green Hill Park and adjacent parts of the city, benefi ting the Greater Worcester Land Trust.

In recent years, the rowing program has reached out in other ways. In April 2008, members of the team participated in Holy Cross’ Relay for Disaster Relief. Contributions from the event were donated to the Beverly School in Kenya to show the Col-lege’s support for the spiritual, mental and physical development of children worldwide. In past years, the event has also raised funds for those affected by Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina.

In October 2007, the Holy Cross rowing team banded together to support one of its own. Twenty-nine members of the team participated in the Light The Night Walk on the Boston Common in support of Mary Dixon ‘08, a member of the team who had been diagnosed with stage-two lymphoma.

The team’s efforts in the community are ongo-ing. Every year members of the squad volunteer with Holy Cross’ Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), the largest student orga-nization on campus. SPUD consists of over 25 different outreach programs and more than 350 active members.

2011-2012. Diggins also serves as the director of rowing. A rower both at St. John’s High School in Shrewbury, Mass., and at Holy Cross, Diggins joined the Crusader coaching staff as an assistant upon graduation in 1986. He was promoted to the head coaching position in 1987. During his tenure, the program has enjoyed tremendous success and grown to be one of the largest varsity sports at Holy Cross. In the last eight years the women’s team has been remarkably successful, highlighted by two undefeated regular seasons. In the 2010-2011 campaign, Holy Cross tied for first out of 39 teams for the point trophy at the 40th Schuylkill Regatta. The Crusaders also won the Irving-Chris-tensen Cup as the varsity eight won their race with Boston College and Connecticut. The varsity eight also defeated UMass in a dual-race in the spring season. The Crusaders finished fourth out of 25 teams at the New England Cham-pionship, as the second varsity eight won the bronze medal. The second varsity eight and the varsity four also earned bronze medals at the Patriot League Championship. In 2009-2010, the Crusaders tied for second out of 24 teams at the New England Championship, as the second varsity eight boat earned a silver medal. TODDPEARSONHEAD MEN’S COACHFOURTH SEASONHOLY CROSS, 1998 Todd Pearson is in his fourth season as the head men’s rowing coach at the College of the Holy Cross in 2011-2012.

In the 2010-2011 season, the Crusaders earned numer-ous victories during the year as this was the first time since 2007 that every boat on the team won at least one race in the same season. At the George Washington Invitational the varsity eight won the Sullivan Cup, which was named after Holy Cross Hall of Famer Tom Sullivan, by defeating George Washington. Also at the GW Invitational the second varsity eight placed first versus Gonzaga and Georgetown. The Crusaders won three of four races versus Bucknell as the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the third varsity four each earned victories. • 3838 2011-2012 HOLY CROSS MEN’S 2011-2012 HOLY CROSS MEN’S ROWINGROWING Holy Cross is renowned for its academic excellence and mentoring-based, liberal arts education in the Jesuit tradition. An exclusively undergraduate institution with just over 2,800 students, Holy Cross is the oldest Catholic college in New England. Founded in 1843 in Worcester,

Mass., the campus occupies 174 beautifully landscaped acres, featuring traditional and contemporary architecture, state-of-the-art fa-cilities, and striking views from atop Mount St. James.

Academic life at Holy Cross is serious, challenging and exciting. Student-professor exchanges in the classroom, as well as in countless informal settings, are at the center of academic life at Holy Cross. With a student to faculty ratio of 11 to one, the opportunity for individual atten-tion is readily available. Few classes exceed an enrollment of 40, and most average 19 students. Holy Cross professors are widely respected in their academic special-ties. Many have national reputations for their research and publications, creative performances, recordings and exhibitions. Almost all of the nearly 300 full- and part-time fac-ulty members hold doctoral degrees from some of the fi nest universities here and abroad. Among the major academic fa-cilities on campus are Dinand Li-brary (which, along with three other specialized libraries on campus, has total holdings of more than 650,000 volumes); Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery (with a regular sched-ule of world-class exhibitions); Brooks Concert Hall (acclaimed by performers and acoustical experts as one of the fi nest medium-sized performance spaces in the region); St. Joseph Memorial Chapel (built in 1924 and contain-ing the recently renovated McCooey Chapel on the lower level); Hogan Campus Center (with

bookstore, post offi ce, coffee lounge, cafeteria and pub); Carol and Park B. Smith Hall (housing the Center for Reli-gion, Ethics and Culture and the Rehm Library); the Mul-timedia Resource Center in Edith Stein Hall; and the new $60-million Integrated Science Complex.

  • 3939 2011-2012 HOLY CROSS MEN’S 2011-2012 HOLY CROSS MEN’S ROWINGROWING Coeducational since 1972, Holy Cross enrolls a stu-dent body of proven accomplishment. Almost all graduat-ed in the top 20 percent of their high school classes. Most live in 10 residence halls on campus, all fully connected to the college’s computer network. Students, elected by their peers, represent their classmates at faculty meetings, on major college committees, and in a consultative capac-

ity on the appointment and promotion of faculty. There are more than 100 co-curricular offerings on campus and diverse opportunities for innovative academic options such as the fi rst-year program, community-based learn-ing, Washington semester, internships and full-year study abroad. Holy Cross integrates faith and knowledge with an

emphasis on service, in keeping with the Jesuits’ commitment to educate “men and women for others.” A distinguishing and all-important characteristic of education at Holy Cross is the emphasis placed upon the service of faith and the promotion of justice. The Offi ce of the College Chap-lains advises Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), which is the larg-est student organization on campus. More than 450 students are involved in 37 direct-service programs in Worcester. The athletics program has a storied tradition that continues today with 27 varsity sports and charter membership in the Patriot League, recognized for its de-velopment of scholar-athletes. The col-lege sponsors many clubs and intramural sports programs, and has excellent athlet-ics facilities, including a football stadium, a baseball stadium, a soccer stadium, a hockey rink and the Hart Recreation Cen-ter, home to the basketball, swimming and hockey teams.
