It is a pleasure to dedicate the 2011-2012 Michigan An-gus Directory to Duane L. “Doc” Schroeder of Decker-ville. Duane is an Angus breeder, advisor, leader, supporter, veterinarian, and friend to many throughout Michigan and the country. Duane was born and raised in the Rochester, Michigan area. His interest and study of Angus cattle developed when he worked at Great Oaks Stock Farms during his late teen years, working for John Sheridan who was in charge of their show cattle. During the summers Duane also traveled to several state fairs and national shows with John and the cattle. While at Great Oaks he met lifelong friend Bill Pype who was their cow man. Duane and Bill later attended many National Western Stock Shows to-gether, and Duane still enjoys attending the North Ameri-can Livestock Exposition and the National Western. Duane has raised Angus cattle for over 35 years at his family’s Blue Water Angus Farm, and has attended each of the 53 Michigan Angus Futurities. Duane attended Michigan State University and in 1962 graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation he joined the Deckerville Veterinary Clinic, which at that time was a three veterinarian practice. Duane retired from the clinic in 2010, after 48 years with the partnership, which had grown to an eight veterinarian practice. The practice has been and still is 80 to 90 % food animals and Dr. Schroeder’s main emphasis was beef cattle along with dairy. He also did the practice’s embryo transfer work. He is a member of the American Veterinary Association, Michigan Veterinary Association, Thumb Veterinary Association and American Association of Bovine Practitioners. Over the years hundreds of young people from the thumb area and across Michigan have benefited from Doc’s knowledge and excitement for cattle. He has supported them with practical beef cattle management and health advice, as well as show experi-ence. Doc is rarely seen without one or more young people at his side, learning about Angus cattle and absorbing his passion for cattle. For many years he brought carloads of youth to participate in the annual Michigan Angus Auxiliary Showmanship contest, with several going on to the National Jr. Angus Showmanship Contest. He has been a 4-H volunteer leader for the Lakeside 4-H Club of Sanilac County for the past 30 years. Dr. Schroeder was also one of the organizers of the Thumb Jackpot Show which now attracts youth participants from 7 counties. He is proud of the Blue Water Angus Farm cattle he has bred and those sold to others. Doc follows the development of his calves and is always willing to share his vast knowledge. He has helped many youth and adults get started in the beef business and works to make sure youth showing experiences are positive. Whenever a young person, another breeder, or the association needs help he is there to assist. Duane is married to Lou Ann and is the father of six children – Doug, Robert, Rick, Holly, Brandon and Wren, who were all involved with cattle. He has attended several National Junior Angus Shows and the family was longtime exhibitors at the Michigan State Fair and at other Michigan shows. Dr. Schroeder has also served on the Deckerville Community School Board and on the Michigan Angus Association board of directors. For many years Doc also donated his professional services for preparing health certifi-cates at the Beef Expo and the association fall sale. Thanks Duane for touching the lives of so many young people and for giving unselfishly of your time and talents to assist juniors and our association.

Traveling the distance, the Michigan Ju-nior Angus members had an unforgettable southern experience following the theme of “Sweet Southern Showdown 2009” for the National Junior Angus Show held in Perry, Georgia. Their teamwork, plan-ning and dedication brought them many honors and successes as Michigan was represented in many contests. Twelve of our juniors and their families participated in the show held July 19-25, 2009. The participants included Danielle Foster from Niles; Patti Vaassen from Ann Arbor; Chelsea Ruggles from Kingston; Ra-chel Reid from Eaton Rapids; Hope Bord-ner from Sturgis; Justin and Dylan Kennedy from Nashville; Tabitha Grochowalski from Ada; Dee Anne and Kendra Merriman from Lowell; Sterling Reichenbach from Bath; and Tanner Lin-dorf from Buchanan. Michigan exhibitors had a great week winning awards for the association. The eye catching display was designed by Chelsea Ruggles and it high-lighted the card theme for “Sweet South-ern Showdown”. Our juniors placed sec-ond in herdsmanship. Historians Dee Anne and Kendra Merriman and the scrapbook committee put together a great scrapbook which placed third in the national competi-tion. Michigan had a total of two cook off teams, one in the intermediate and one in the senior divisions. The intermediate team consisted of Dee Anne Merriman, Dylan Kennedy and Rachel Reid. The senior team included Chelsea Ruggles, Hope Bordner, Justin Kennedy and Patti Vaassen. The ju-niors also participated in a variety of other

contests such as photography and team fitting. Michigan’s fitting team consisted of Patti Vaassen, Justin Kennedy, Dylan Ken-nedy and Dee Anne Merriman. Our 2009 Miss Michigan Angus, Hope Bordner, represented our state and assist-ed with show ring presentations. She par-ticipated in the Queens Luncheon which was an informative and enjoyable expe-

rience. We were very proud to have Danielle Foster rep-resent Michigan in the highly competi-tive National Jr. An-gus Showmanship Contest. We were especially excited to have Danielle place in the top fif-teen. Some of the other juniors did

quite well placing in the top five of their classes. It was very exciting when Danielle Foster won the Grand Champion Overall Bred and Owned Heifer. The success for Michigan continued however as Danielle was elected to the NJAA Board of Direc-tors. Danielle also received a $3000 schol-arship from the Angus Foundation, and Justin Kennedy received a $1,000 Founda-tion Scholarship and placed second in the American Angus Auxiliary scholarship con-test, receiving a $1,600 scholarship. During the week the juniors enter-tained themselves with an interesting fund-raising project. The association sold special decks of cards which had images of Angus cattle on them and written on the back was NJAS. They were a success and the association made a good profit from them. Congratulations to all the juniors and many thanks to all the advisors and parents who coached and supported every junior. Ev-eryone had a great time.

Danielle Foster and Erika Boehmer were also recipients of the prestigious national gold award given to qualified applicants in their last year of junior membership. Patti Vaassen and Erika Boehmer each received a $3000 scholarship from the Angus Foun-dation, and Justin Kennedy and Chelsea Ruggles each received a $1,000 Founda-tion Scholarship. We continue to assist Michigan Angus Breeders and Angus youth in educational and promotional activities, sponsor the Miss Michigan Angus Con-test, provide scholarships for graduating seniors, assist with the annual banquet and Preview Show, provide hospitality for various activities, sponsor the junior showmanship contest at the Preview Show, award certificates of achievement to outstanding juniors, as well as support Ameri-can Angus Auxiliary programs and activities. Our 2009 scholarship winners were Justin Kennedy, son of Jeff and Heather Ken-nedy of Nashville and Patti Vaassen, daughter of Dan and Sharon Vaassen of Ann Arbor. Justin received the 2nd place scholarship from the American Angus Auxiliary. Our 2010 scholarship winners were Ryan Reid, son of Chuck and Linda Reid of Eaton Rapids and Chelsea Ruggles, daughter of Tim and Julie Ruggles of Kingston. Since 1967, Michigan has had 19 scholarship winners place at Nationals. Each year, we are excited to award American Angus Auxiliary Certificates of Achievement to outstanding Michigan juniors who have achieved major accomplish-ments at the state, regional and national levels. The certificates are presented at our annual awards banquet. A record number of Michigan Junior Angus members were awarded this honor in 2009 and 2010. The first Michigan Angus Queen was crowned on July 30, 1967. Since then, 41 other young women have represented Michigan Angus breeders in this capacity. In keeping with tradition, Rachel Reid, 2010 Miss Michigan Angus, daughter of Chuck and Linda Reid of Eaton Rapids, crowned the 2011 queen, Kendra Merriman, at the annual Michigan An-gus banquet in March. Kendra is the daughter of Joe and Sue Merriman of Lowell. We are also pleased to have Katie Reid, daughter of Rob and Terry Reid of Eaton Rapids and DeeAnne Merriman, daughter of Joe and Sue Merriman of Lowell, serving as the 2011 Michigan Angus Ambassadors. Since 1967, the Michigan Angus Auxiliary has been proud to sponsor a total of 79 Michigan juniors who have participated in the National Junior Showmanship Contest. In 2009, Danielle Foster, daughter of Scott and Elaine Foster of Niles represented Michigan. Danielle was named a finalist in the national competition. Our 2010 representatives were Erika Boehmer, daughter of Earl Boehmer of Olivet and Kris Boehmer of Charlotte and Drew Bordner, son of Monte and Robin Bordner of Sturgis. Erika was named as the 5th overall showmanship contestant in the national competition. Over the years, many women have given numerous hours to the Auxiliary serving as officers, committee members and chairpersons, and helping out wherever needed. Sev-eral members have also been active in the American Angus Auxiliary, serving on various committees and as officers. Patti Rae, Lois Foster and Nancy Thelen served as president of the American Angus Auxiliary, in 1981, 1990 and 2008 respectively. Michigan has had the privilege of hosting the national auxiliary luncheons in 1968, 1981, 1990 and 2008. Thank you to everyone who has helped the Michigan Angus Auxiliary achieve its mission over the past 44 years. We look forward to working with Michigan Angus enthu-siasts as we continue to embrace the tradition!

The Magic number!by Jerry Cassady, Regional Manager, American Angus Association

Years ago, when I was in grade school, we would often watch educational short cartoon clips known as Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings. One particular mes-sage focused on the number three, where “Three” was a magic number. As I matured it was clear to me that there was nothing magic about the number three, it was simply a catchy song that helped young people learn mathematics. Today it seems that in the arena of beef cattle selection we place an overabundance of emphasis on certain “magic numbers” in order to create the next generation of Angus-sired calves. Here’s a good example. It has been my experience here in the Midwest that one standout “magic number” is an expected progeny difference (EPD) for birth weight of +2 pounds (lb.). This benchmark seems to be the line in the sand for many seedstock and commercial producers alike; bulls above this magic number are quickly overlooked regardless of other numerical or phenotypic strengths they may offer. Time after time during bull sale season I have witnessed quality Angus bulls that can genetically provide a positive boost in many economically important traits simply get passed by due to the fact that they are above a +2.0 for birth weight EPD. Is the entire industry breeding all virgin heifers that are genetically predisposed to dystocia problems? I doubt it. Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware of the issues involved with calving difficulty, and by no means am I promoting large calves with excessive birth weights. I am also mindful that, in most cases, we are selling yearling bulls with non-parent EPD values, and the probability for change is real. There are also environmental factors that can play a huge role in the birth weights of calves born on any given farm or ranch. However, birth weight EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease, and should be used as such. My point is this: What is the magnitude difference in genetics between bulls with a +1.9 compared to +2.1 ? In reality, it’s not much. However, the difference in purchase price on sale day can be substantial. Science will support coupling birth weight EPDs with calving ease direct EPDs. This has proven to be a highly effective selection tool as it more directly predicts the econom-ically relevant trait of calving ease compared to using the previously described indicator trait for predicting birth weight. Many seedstock producers in my region are now utilizing both EPDs to more accurately predict calving ease in future progeny with great success. Another frustrating fact is how difficult it can be to sell Angus bulls that are above breed average for birth weight EPD with excellent growth numbers, while watching com-mercial cattlemen unknowingly purchase bulls of another breed with more birth weight potential to achieve comparable growth. If we consider the latest adjustment factors for calculating across-breed EPDs (AB EPDS) provided by the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), one can easily see how this oversight can potentially result in more calving problems in the next calf crop if selection tools are not considered to reduce the incidence of difficult births. Here’s an example: Let’s say you purchase a Simmental bull that is listed in the sale catalog as a -1.0 BW EPD. He may even qualify for an in-state heifer development pro-gram. However, after you add the USMARC adjustment of +5.2, this so-called calving-ease bull would have an Angus-based equivalent BW EPD of +4.2 pounds. None of the 4-lb. Angus bulls qualify for the in-state heifer development program, and none of them should. These are not considered calving-ease bulls. Ultimately, it comes down to the accuracy and reliability of the database to predict future generations. We as Angus breeders are fortunate to have the largest and most ac-curate set of data in the entire industry. Our challenge is to continue to educate our bull-buying customers, and to be cognizant of the fact that there are no “magic numbers.”

We believe Angus cattle bring a premium in the market today because the American consum-

er judges Angus beef best at the end of a dinner fork. The Certified Angus Beef program has been critical in building our reputation for quality. At present, the American beef industry cannot produce enough cattle to meet consumer demand for Certified Angus Beef. Providing the seedstock to meet that demand is our mission.
