April Greetings, Chargers!

Yes, spring is right around the corner! It will be wonderful to

Spring greeting Chargers!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Spring Break! Can you be‐

lieve we are in the last term of the school year? Dundee‐Crown

has had a great year so far. I know we will finish out the year

with

many

positive

activities.

The most important dates in April are our testing dates of April

27 and April 28. Dundee‐Crown’s success or failure is meas‐

ured by the number of junior students who meet and exceed

standards on the PSAE (Prairie State Achievement Exam). The

PSAE is made up of two separate tests, the ACT and the Work‐

Keys, which are then combined together for a composite

score. Our students are under pressure to perform well on

both days. Please encourage your students to do their best,

even when they face challenging questions or difficult reading

passages. We know our students are simply outstanding. Im‐

proved test scores will begin changing the perception of Dun‐

dee‐Crown in the community. Thank you for your continued

support! More detailed testing information is found later in

the newsletter.

A registration packet will be sent home with your student on

Tuesday, April 26. The packet has very important information

you will need for your student’s enrollment registration for the

2011‐2012 school year. The process is similar to what we have

done in the past few years. You will have two options avail‐

able; please select the one that best fits your needs. Our goal

is to have all of our incoming and returning students ready and

eager to start classes on Monday, August 15, 2011. I encourage

you

to

use

option

#1:

Option 1: Complete the forms and return them prior to Fri‐

day, June 10, 2011

Option 2: Attend Registration Days at Dundee‐Crown; Mon‐

day, June 27 through Wednesday, June 29, 2011.

Don’t miss our musical, Les Miserables, which will be per‐

formed at 7:00 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 14,

15, and 16. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and

seniors. Please purchase your ticket through POMP in the M1 hallway in the music wing (after school and during lunch hours)

Our performances are often sold out so get your tickets now!

Bully Prevention Resources

and Reporting Form

District 300 recognizes that technology can play a significant role in bully prevention. The

district has established on its web site (www.d300.org) a bully prevention page which con‐

tains resources for the student, parent and staff to explore.

As most bullying is not reported by the victim for many reasons, the district has devel‐

oped an on‐line bully report form. This form can be anonymously submitted on‐line or

the reporting person can identify themselves in the report. In an effort to break down the

reluctance to report bullying behavior, our web site now allows for the reporting of bully‐

ing anytime by any student or parent. When the form is submitted it is electronically re‐

ceived by District’s Safety Officer who will forward to and discuss the report with the

school of occurrence.

It is still the best practice to report bullying directly and immediately to a school staff

member or administrator.

Empty Bowls

Art Club is hosting the 3rd annual

Empty Bowls event on Thursdayand Friday, April 14th and15th. For a $5 donation, staff andstudents may choose a hand-made ceramic bowl and also re-ceive a cup of soup prepared bythe Foods class. All money willbe donated to F.I.S.H. Food Pan-try. The event will be held in themulti-purpose room during all

lunches.

Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) Rep‐

resentatives will be available on Thursdays to assist

our seniors with questions regarding the college ap‐

plication process. Students may see their counsel‐

ors for an appointment slip. Representatives will

meet with students in the Career Center located in

the

Counseling

Department

from

9:30am

–

3:00pm.

D‐CHS Scholarship Bulletin – Seniors, many scholar‐

ships for college are now listed online. Check out

these opportunities on the Counseling Department

website by looking under the Financial Aid section.

New scholarships arrive weekly. You may also get

applications and a hard copy of the bulletin from the

Counseling Department secretary.

Work Permits

The Department of Labor requires a work permit for

all persons under the age of 16. The first step is for

the minor to obtain a letter of intent from the pro‐

spective employer stating his or her name, the job

and its description, signed by a manager. Then that

letter, the minor’s birth certificate issued from the

county of birth and social security card must be

brought to Mrs. Altmayer in the Main Office by the

parent or legal guardian. Students may not submit

these materials themselves. Students under the

age

of

16

who

wish

to

work

are

restricted

in

the

number of hours they can be work each day and

week. There are also many restrictions for minors

on the types of businesses they are allowed to work

in and the types of jobs they may be employed to

do. Hazardous jobs utilizing chemicals or power

equipment are among those that are unacceptable.

College Visits

One important factor in evaluating a college is the

campus visit. Consider this:

College Visitation Days—every student may take up

to two days during their junior and

senior years for the purpose of visiting a college.

These days do not count against a

student’s attendance providing the proper proce‐

dure is followed. See your Dundee‐Crown planner

for details.

Transcript Requests

High school transcripts are provided to students

when requested with the Transcript Release form

available in the Counseling Office. There is a mini‐

mum of a 48 hour waiting period before a transcript

can be prepared due to the volume of requests.

Students should keep this in mind when needing

transcripts to be sent by a specific deadline date.

The first 5 requested Official Transcripts are free to

current students. Any additional Official Transcripts

cost $5.00 per copy.

Kids Run for the BEAR

Pediatric

Cancer Foundation

(www.bearnecessities.org) is announcing Kids Run for the BEAR, a timed one mile race for children age

5‐12. The Kids Run for the BEAR event will take place Saturday, April 30 at 8:30 a.m. on a neighborhood

course with the start and finish line at Eastview Elementary School. The cost per child to participate is

just $10. There will be medals awarded to the top three runners overall, as well as the top three boy

and girl runners in each age category.

The Kids Run for the BEAR is also the kick‐off to the 17th

Annual “Run for the BEAR” (5K run/walk and

10K run) to be held on Sunday, October 2. Please visit http://www.active.com/donate/

runforthebear2011 to access the registration link for both the spring and fall runs. Race day registratio

History of the BEAR Run

Bear Krupa was an eight‐year‐old Eastview student who died Jan. 9, 1993 after a courageous five‐and‐a

half year battle with Wilms Tumor, a pediatric cancer. This race is run to help make sure that someday

no other child has to go through what Bear and his family did, and as the kick‐off to the 17th Annual

‘Run for the Bear’ to be held Sunday, October 2, 2011.

While Bear spent a lot of time in the hospital fighting cancer, his mom saw he was more concerned wit

the other kids and families around him than he was about himself. Together they committed to create

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Pre-Prom Reception on May 7th

Would you like to help with the Pre-Prom Reception?

Each year parents gather in the gym to bid farewell to their grown-

up children for Prom. This reception is an hour before the buses

leave and is a great time to see all of the beautiful young DC stu-dents being escorted to prom. With several photo displays it is a

great opportunity for parents to capture memorable moments of

their children heading to the big dance. PACT is looking for parents to help out

creating the backdrops, setting up and serving refreshments. If you would like t

help please contact Celste Zozokos [email protected] or Trudy Tanner at

[email protected].

A breakfast will be provided to all students the mornings of PSAE testing.

Help is needed from now until April 26 to sort, label, and organize the test book-

lets. If you can help please e-mail Nicole Woodbury at

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon—-May 6

For the past couple of years PACT has organized the Teachers Appreciation

luncheon. This year’s lunch will on May 6th. This is an all-volunteer effort, we need your help serving the day of the event as

What: PACT Meeting

When: Wed. April 27th at 7:30 pm

Where: D-C Annex, 2nd Floor Media Center

On February 23rd during our PACT meeting,

Chuck Schulte from Diamond Physical Therapy

gave a presentation regarding Sports Injures, Pre-

vention, and Backpack injury prevention.

Chuck went over the risks of the activities, when

it is safe to return to sports after an injury, playing

sports with the proper equipment, recognizinginjuries and what steps you

should take to treat the inju-

ries. He also went over how

to treat an injury at home

and when to take an athlete

to a professional.

Chuck also discussed backpacks, where a back-

pack should be positioned on the back, and limit-

ing the weight in a backpack. A good rule of thumb is that a backpack shouldn’t weigh more

than 10-15% of the weight of the student. We

want to thank Chuck for a very informational

meeting.

Sports Injuries and PreventionDiscussion

College FairOn February 18th a College Fair was held at Dundee

Crown. Fifty-six colleges were represented. The fair at-

tended by current Sophmores, Juniors, and Middle School

AVID students.

College Night

Did you get to the Dundee Crown College night Wednes-

day, March 23rd. This event was designed for current jun-

iors and their parents. The Counseling Department pre-

sented “what to do to prepare for the college application

process” as well as a panel discussion of 2 college students

to answer questions. If you were unable to make it, contact

the counseling department for handouts or to answer our

questions. Remember each student gets 2 excused absents

a year for college visits their sophomore through senior

year.
