We Are So ThankfulWow! Another year has

come and gone here at theDubuque Regional Humane Soci-ety! I celebrated my 20th year withthe DRHS on September 1, 2011.The time has gone so fast and thechanges we have seen in animalwelfare are amazing.

When I first started they es-timated that approximately 10 -12% of people adopted a pet froman animal shelter, now approxi-mately 25% of people adopt a re-cycled pet. It has become a cooland respected thing to do. Theyalso estimated that 14 - 16 millionanimals were euthanized in 1991,now the estimate is 4 - 6 million -still too many but we are makingprogress.

This year we had the op-portunity to purchase the Carlislebuilding on the corner ofChavenelle and the NW Arterial. Ithas everything we want: location, visibility, green space, accessibility,

trails, and a building to retro fit.We did raise a lot of money in ashort period of time, however itwasn't enough so we continue tofund raise, hopefully to purchasethat building.

While it was a crazy time forus, I enjoyed personally visitingwith the donors I called on. It wasmy pleasure to meet and get toknow our donors on a higher level. We truly appreciate all of the won-derful people who donated to ourcapital campaign.

That being said the DRHSsincerely thanks all of our donors, adopters, businesses and sponsors. We truly could not make it withoutyour support. You really do "makea difference" in the lives of the5,000 lost, abandoned and un-wanted animals we care for eachyear.

Sincerely,Jane McCall, CAWAPresident and CEO

to protect and promote the well-being of all animals, by fosteringrespect for their inherent dignity.

a community where every pet hasa permanent and loving home, allcompanion animals are spayed orneutered, and all pets are treatedwith respect and compassion.

Dear Friends,In 2011 we continued to fulfill our mission for the present while

looking with optimism toward the future. Through the generosity of our donors we cared for 4,916 animals in

2011. We adopted 2,806 to forever homes. This despite our current facility built to care for 3,600 per year - at the most.

2011 dealt the loss of securing vacant land behind AMC theatrewhen the only access to the property fell into foreclosure before the easement was finalized. Unfortunately there was no solution to the easement problem. Our badly needed move was delayed. However, ourcommitment to finding an answer to our needs remains.

This past year has clearly demonstrated, and in some cases reinforced, where our priorities lie over the next few years, and where wemust take the DRHS to continue to meet the needs of our community andthe animals we serve. I am so proud to be part of this amazing organization!

Many thanks to Jane and her tremendous staff for the tireless dayafter day commitment to our community. The work of the DRHS would notbe possible without community support. Sincere gratitude to our volunteers, donors, business sponsors and adoptive families.

We look forward to all of you continuing to be here with us toachieve great things.

Sincerely,

Anne BendaBoard Chair

our live release rate has skyrocketed in the past twoyears. For dogs, it was over85% in 2011!

Through hard work and withlots of help from you, wesaved more sick animals, rehabilitated more animals, and adopted more animalsthan ever before.

Much of the credit is due toour foster families. Fosterfamilies save many animalsfrom suffering and deatheach year, and we truly appreciate their time and efforts.

one of the most successfuladditions in the last twoyears is the surgical "closet"and our veterinary staff.

This year, in addition tospaying and neutering all ofour animals prior to adoption, we also did about300 cat spay/neuters for lowincome, multi-cat owners orfor those just helping out theneighborhood cat.

They did a total of 2,262spay and neuter surgeries, and it’s having an impact. The number of cats and kittens coming into the shelter has decreased from3,100 in 2009 to just over2,400 in 2011.

our programs offer real solutions to the problemsfacing animals in our commu-nity. With your help, we’restarting to see real results.

People are fascinated withanimals. Young or old, humans naturally desire tointeract with them.

We’ve learned that it’s notjust about teaching peopleto respect animals, it’s aboutproviding opportunities forpeople to act and make adifference.
