2012 Chairperson Dr. Gary Richards & President/CEO Janet Bauer

The Four County Community Foundation was created twenty-five years ago from the $2.5 million sale of the Community Hospital. Back in 1987, Ronald Reagan was President, James Blanchard was Governor, the Cosby Show was the most popular TV show, gasoline was 95¢ a gallon, and Michigan State University beat the University of Southern California in the Rose Bowl. Well, a lot of things have changed over the last twenty-five years, but not the mission of the original founding body of trustees. We are still committed to serving the current and emerging needs of our local community, and continuing the tradition of philanthropy begun generations ago.

Over the past quarter century, the Four County Community Foundation has achieved many milestones including, but not limited to, the following:

• Exceeding $10 million in assets;• Awarding over $6.3 million in grants;• Establishing a Youth Advisory Committee (YAC);• Securing compliance with the National Standards for Community Foundations;• Assisting in the development of marketing tools and activities, which are utilized across

the country; and • Locating our headquarters in a house that is registered on the National and Michigan

Register of Historic Places. We are proud of the individualized services we provide our donors. We have a total of 105 funds—each a reflection of the individuals, organizations, and companies that created the fund. Hilda Hill and sisters Dora and Toos Ondersma left the Four County Community Foundation with its largest two donations to date. They donated in excess of $1 million each for the purpose of bringing together human and financial resources from the corners of Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, and St. Clair Counties. They shared in our vision of “Giving where you live”.

Thousands of grants and college scholarships have been awarded since 1987, in the areas of education, health, community, youth and adult programs. This year’s report features a sample of recent grant stories about our Education Initiative, Double Up Food Bucks, Field Trips through a No Child Left Indoors pro-active grant, and Skyline Camp and Retreat Center’s Challenge Course.

The Four County Community Foundation continues, as was the mission of the original founding trustees, to help donors do good work… forever. We are here to help our donors make a positive impact in their community.

New Fund: Sally McGeorge Memorial

Sally McGeorge had many passions in life: family, local youth, and golf, just to name a few. Anyone who had the opportunity to get to know Sally understood how kind-spirited and well-respected she was in the community. Sally’s life was unfortunately cut short as she passed playing the game of golf that she loved so much. Sally’s husband, Doug, and son, Nile, have set to preserve their loved one’s memory by establishing a fund through Four County Community Foundation. The Sally McGeorge Fund will benefit the youth in Capac. Currently, the scholarship is given to Capac High School seniors, who have exemplified positivity and character and plan on attending an accredited college, university, or trade school.

Every year the McGeorges host a golf outing at Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac. The monument pictured is a permanent fixture to remind those playing to take time and appreciate the serenity the game of golf provides. The location of the acknowledgment is hole 16, the same hole where Sally passed away.

No Child Left in Doors

Recently the Four County Community Foundation gave $10,000 to both Seven Ponds Nature Center and Wolcott Mill Metropark to assist school age children’s projects. More specifically, this program will support schools in our service area and enable them with the ability to make field trips to the Seven Ponds Nature Center and Wolcott Mill Farm and Learning Center. This funding helped alleviate financial burdens that most schools are faced with in the current economic conditions. The funds subsidized admission and transportation fees. Thanks to our largest unrestricted bequest to date, from the Ondersma sisters, Dora and Toos, the Community Foundation was able to provide this unique opportunity.

Education Initiative

The Four County Community Foundation Board decided it was necessary and impactful to provide another round of Education Initiative grants. The Education Initiative was introduced in 2011 and due to great success, the board issued permission to offer the grants for another year. The Education Initiative grant cycle was an opportunity for school administrators to ask for support regarding the biggest areas for improvement in their school buildings. Principals of each of our respective schools submitted a multitude of diverse, creative, and necessary projects or improvements. The Education Initiative served as a great tool to assist in the alleviation of financial burdens that schools face. Some of the more creative grants were: • Armada High School — Greenhouse Renovations• Almont Middle School — Cedar Point Physics Day• Imlay City Elementary — Summer Robotics Camp Phase 2• Capac High School — Technology Improvements• Oxford Middle School — Middle School Transition Program • Amanda Moore Elementary (Romeo) — Writing Incentive Program

Double Up Food Bucks

Healthy and nutritious foods are not often readily available to those less fortunate. The foundation has assumed the role of a funding source to the Fair Food Network’s Double Up Food Bucks Program. The Double Up Food Bucks program allows those with bridge cards and government assistance benefits the ability to use that funding at local Farmers’ Markets for double the value. For instance $1 EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) at your standard supermarket or grocery store is the equivalent of $2 at the Farmers’ Market. The Four County Foundation has funded the Imlay City Farmers’ Market with the ability to use EBT as Double Up Food Bucks. Not only does this program encourage buying fresh nutritious food, it also serves as an incitement for local farmers. It is our goal to foster an environment that encourages healthy food options in our rural service area. Double up Food Bucks may only be used on edible local produce up to $20 per visit.

During the first round of Education Initiatives Imlay City High School hosted a distracted driving workshop. The program put students in a controlled environment and educated on the dangers of distracted driving. The Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee found that distracted driving was one of the 3 top concerns in 6 schools surveyed in the Needs Assessment.

In 2011, the Y.A.C awarded a grant to Skyline Camp to renovate the challenge course. Skyline hosts thousands of campers over the summer season. In the spring of 2012, the Y.A.C. held their spring meeting at Skyline and had the opportunity to team build on the course.

Y.A.C. members accept the “Best Media Usage” award from The Council of Michigan Foundations and President Rob Collier.

Four County Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee

The Four County Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory or Y.A.C. is comprised of young philanthropists from our six core school districts. Our Y.A.C. has been quite busy as of late. Not only have our young leaders been enthusiastically participating in quarterly grant cycles and scholarship reviews, they have been volunteering their time, talents, and treasures to better the communities they reside in. Service learning has become a tremendous way of motivating our youth. Recently, at the Council of Michigan Foundation’s Summer Leadership Camp, our Y.A.C. members assisted in producing thousands of meals and healthy snack options for underprivileged youth. Not only did our kids serve, they were also awarded with one of only four statewide awards given out at camp. This year our Y.A.C. was awarded “Best Media Usage of the Year” for the hard work they put into the needs assessment survey. We here at Four County are very proud of our young grantmakers as they continue to strive to be impactful.
