2 Grand Valley State University

With the advent of the 2012 Author Recognition Reception and the publication of this bibliography, we celebrate faculty and staff members at Grand Valley State University who in 2011 contributed their scholarship, research, and creative efforts to West Michigan and the world. We hope the libraries’ resources and services contributed to your success.

Works in this Author Bibliography run the gamut from deeply researched scholarly monographs to grant-funded research articles in peer-reviewed journals to highly creative works of fiction, drama, poetry, and media. Authors represent all the colleges and many other units in the university. Works are grouped by type and are indexed both by author and by department.

We are on the cusp of a time when traditional scholarly publishing models will give way to new models that provide both free access and broader permissions to use and re-use information with proper attribution; make text and data mining easier; use social media to connect global research communities; and redefine textbooks as affordable, portable, interactive learning devices. In preparation, we are building the libraries’ capacity to support authors and creators who are working at the leading edge of these changes.

For example, we know that making peer-reviewed articles open access (an option offered by most major journal publishers) ensures greater exposure for an author’s work. But it often involves payment of fees to the publisher. So this year the Grand Valley libraries began offering Open Access Publishing grants to help GVSU authors cover up to $3,000 of these fees. The grants are administered through the Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence website.

ScholarWorks@GVSU is another way for authors to increase the impact of their scholarship. Most publishers allow authors to deposit the final peer-reviewed manuscript in a digital archive like ScholarWorks. Once there, the papers can be discovered by Google Scholar and other Internet search engines and can be read in their entirety by users from any place in the world without charge. There is no question it works—the 3,400 papers in ScholarWorks were downloaded more than 130,000 times last year, and visitors came to the site from 145 countries and from every state in the U.S. If you would like to expand the reach of your published scholarship by making your manuscripts available through ScholarWorks, please contact your liaison librarian.

Again, congratulations on your publishing accomplishments. It is our great pleasure to celebrate with you!

Like every good storyteller, Deborah Bambini knows that a successful story requires attention to detail. Whether it’s a novel, a movie, a play or, in Bambini’s case, a nursing setting, if the details are wrong, the scene won’t work. And when lives are on the line, being detail oriented is even more critical.

Thanks to Bambini’s attention to detail, the more than 150 nursing simulation scenarios the associate professor in Grand Valley’s Kirkhof College of Nursing has written and edited over the years have helped the college’s Simulation and Learning Resource Center become a premier facility for students and professionals of various fields and institutions to gain real-world skills and practice in health care. The center is designed to promote interprofessional learning, while providing simulation at gradually more realistic levels.

In 2011, Bambini authored, contributed to, or served as content expert coordinator on seven published projects ranging from neonatal resuscitation to postpartum hemorrhage for Elsevier Health Sciences, a leading international health care publisher.

“Our goal is to provide as much fidelity as possible to students,” said Bambini, who has been teaching at Grand Valley in one form or another since 1993. Since then, she has finished her M.S.N., obtained her Ph.D., and become a tenured faculty member. “We provide all the info, tools, and scripts for faculty to run a simulation of a certain type of patient situation.”

To write a simulation, Bambini draws from her 11 years of experience as a nurse practitioner, as well as her teaching and her M.S.N. and Ph.D. studies. She then researches situations, actions, and outcomes using cases from resources and databases such as CINAHL, ERIC, and Medline. Before the product is published, Bambini said it goes through a group of five experts known as the “deep dive team” to ensure the scenario is “a very realistic portrayal of a patient’s history and provides a true 360 degree simulation experience.”

The simulation center uses manikins and actors as patients for which unique histories and nursing scenarios have been created. The scenarios Bambini created for Elsevier are accessed electronically. In all, the obstetric simulation product has 20 patient scenarios; the health assessment edition has 12 patients, each with 6 to 8 simulations. Bambini is editor of the obstetrics edition and co-editor of the health assessment edition. She noted that her students are not the sole beneficiaries of her work: “As I write scenarios, I stay up to date on best practices in nursing related to the scenarios and simulation.”

In 2008, Bambini received a Pew Faculty Teaching with Technology award for being an early adoptee of multiple forms of technology and engaging her students in Wiki and Webquest projects. “I love inspiring and sharing the love of nursing with students,” she said. “I have a broader vision of what nursing can be and want to share that.”

As Grand Valley State University’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program has grown steadily over the last few years, faculty members have been encouraged to find practical linkages that can integrate their teaching, scholarship, and service. For A. Scott Rood, assistant professor and assistant department chairperson, the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (RCRA) has provided an avenue to accomplish that.

The RCRA is a non-profit organization that serves as a vehicle to communicate, educate, and promote standards of professionalism within the tourism industry and to provide opportunities for continuing education, networking, and awareness of industry trends. The organization’s member constituencies include resort practitioners, academicians, and students (engaged in resort internships). Rood is president-elect of the organization.

Four years ago, Rood was asked to co-chair the annual research symposium component of RCRA’s national conference. With co-chair Mary Wisnom, Ph.D., from Florida Gulf Coast University, he has since overseen an annual speaker review process that seeks applied research presentations in the recreation, event, and travel industries. The process led to the development of the Journal of Tourism Insights as a publishing opportunity for papers successfully refereed post-conference.

The Journal of Tourism Insights is the official refereed publication of the RCRA and Rood serves as the

journal administrator, overseeing logistical issues. Initially the journal was housed on another university’s recreation department website, but that proved to be an inadequate vehicle for dissemination. In 2010 the journal was migrated to ScholarWorks, which provides a professional and easy to use format for authors, reviewers, and readers. The persistent URL links to each article provides quick search results.

“While traditional journals will remain vital for faculty for some time to come,” said Rood, “in my opinion open access to research in hospitality and tourism is a welcome and needed addition for scholars and practitioners to be able to share and learn from one another.”

Because the journal is published electronically, editors don’t need to worry about page length or limit the number of articles they publish the same way print publishers do. “A lot of good work was not able to be published previously using that paradigm,” said Rood. Each submission is blind reviewed by at least two respected commercial recreation and tourism experts from universities and colleges across the U.S.A. and Canada.

Looking forward, the journal is working on a special issue that will present research applications that expand and strengthen the applied, conceptual, and theoretical underpinnings and linkages to Caribbean cultural and heritage tourism. Michael Scantlebury, Ph.D., another hospitality and tourism management faculty member, is assisting Rood with that project.

Finding books and news articles about closings of automobile manufacturing plants on which he would base his recent documentary play, “Rust,” wasn’t a problem for Grand Valley State University assistant professor of writing Austin Bunn. “The play is about what happens to people who make things when we stop making things,” Bunn said of the show that debuted to positive reviews at Actors’ Theatre of Grand Rapids in September 2011. “It’s the true stories and voices of people affected by the close.” Culling his research for bits and pieces around which he could write the play was a bit more laborious. “It was actually a struggle to get out from under all the research we did for the show,” he said of the extensive background work he did to bring the story of the 2008 closing of the General Motors metal-stamping plant in Wyoming, Michigan to the stage.

Bunn and undergraduate writing majors James Walsh and Thomas Mervenne spent hours tracking down GM employees who had worked at the plant, and recording and transcribing extensive interviews with them. “People had worked there for 30 years,” he said. “They couldn’t contain their experiences in a few sentences.”

Bunn also located out-of-print books on the topic at the Steelcase Library on the Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids Campus and used the university’s digital databases to uncover relevant news articles. He used data from Grand Valley’s Community Research Institute on population changes in Wyoming, Michigan to round out his research.

Bunn’s research for the play is dramatized in the performance. The play tells of the plant closing and its effects on the town and former employees through Bunn’s portrayal of himself as the interviewer. Information is also shared with the audience as data on a large projection screen and through clips from GM films. A bibliography of Bunn’s research for the play was distributed to playgoers in the lobby after its premier performances.

An excerpt of the play was published in the January 8, 2012 issue of the New York Times magazine; a tour of the show began in Three Oaks, Michigan and will continue in Detroit and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, as well as Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Janesville, Wisconsin later this year.
