2011 Cereal Rust Update - Western Australia
ACRCP Meeting – March 2012

• Wheat– Stripe rust: 3 reports only (Sep-Oct), minimal reports for
last 4 years– Leaf rust: Several reports VS & S older variety types– Stem rust: Late widespread development Great
Southern, South Eastern and Southern regions (Oct). Fungicides used. Primarily S types affected.
• Barley– Leaf rust: South and south coastal. Currently the most
problematic rust disease on cereals in WA. Significant fungicide usage for powdery will have reduce BLR expression.
• Oat– Leaf and stem rust: reported from September onwards.

2nd Inoculation (mid-June) Leaf rust pathotype 104-1,2,3,(6),(7),11 +Lr37 Re-inoculation with both stem rust pathotypes
Good establishment of all three pathotypes by mid August Trident: 60 - 70% leaf and stem rusts Wyalkatchem: 80% stem rust
Planting Two buffer runs of Harrismith planted by third week of May Main planting - third week of June
1st Inoculation (3rd week of July): 134 E16 A+ 2nd Inoculation (3rd week of August) Good establishment of stripe rust by 2nd week of
October Harrismith: 70-80% stripe rust EGA Bonnie Rock: 70-80% stripe rust

Above average rainfall through much of wheatbelt between Nov 2011-Jan 2012 raises spectre of green bridge carryover of rust inoculum.BOM rainfall outlook suggests continuing wetter than average, potentially supporting green regrowth and rust inoculum
