Welcome to the 29th F-100 Western NationalsWelcome to the 29th F-100 Western Nationals. With gas prices as they are, it’s nice to see that many of you have decided to make the trip I’m sure you have made the right decision.

We have added a new category to our awards, “Pro Build” if you truck was built by a pro builder or shop you can ask to be judged in that category. That will bring our total awards to 37 this year. The award judging is under the direction of Glenn Kerr. The task of judging has always been tough with so many well built trucks, this task takes a good part of the morning so when winners are announced, let’s show our support for them.

Many of our regular vendors and sponsors back this year and we also have a few new ones. Please make sure to visit them it’s not everyday you get the opportunity to have them within walking distance of each other.

Again, thank you for coming to the show and making the show what it is. Without you there would be no show. So get out there and visit with your friends and make some new ones.

Before I close, I want to thank my fellow club members for all their hard work and commitment during this past year. The fact is, we have already started working on the 30th F-100 Western Nationals which starts with the art work and the flyer which you can see here on pages 30 & 31.

The Friday Cruise... June 24th by Chris TraversThis year we had an exciting and totally different cruise that gave everybody a glimpse into the true roots of the Hot Rod World. The cruise departed shortly after our

customary driver’s meeting at the Ayers Suites and took off to the east into the Inland Empire. After a short run on the 91-Freeway, we took the first exit in Corona and wound through the Corona and Chino Valley areas checking out airports, cows & prisons. You hear it right... we saw everything. This region has been one of the fastest growing areas in Southern California while retaining a bit of it’s rural farmland roots.

The first stop was at the Ontario headquarters of Total Cost Involved Engineering. We were treated to a tour of their 32,000 square foot facility that designs and produces frames, chassis, front and rear suspensions, brake kits, engine and transmission mounts, springs, shocks and more. There were tons of questions from the group and these guys answered every one of them. www.totalcostinvolved.com

For lunch, we stopped at nearby Vince’s. The tradition of going to Vince’s Spaghetti spans 65 years and they are still going strong. To give you an idea of how popular this place really is, On a typical Saturday, Vince’s Spaghetti serves up to 600 lbs. of spaghetti, approx. 50 gallons of tomato sauce, about 120 gallons of meat sauce all to around 2,000 hungry patrons. Don’t get fooled by the pasta, if Frank Cuccia’s uncle hadn’t eaten a plate of his grandmother’s spaghetti in front of the customers, Vince’s Restaurant might still be a French Dip Stand. www.vincesspaghettirestaurant.com

Our last stop and shop tour was at the world famous So-Cal Speed Shop in Pomona. Founded by Alex Xydias in 1946, So-Cal Speed is one of the oldest shop in the world that not only sells a line of products, but has built many of the most amazing and historical vehicles in our world that we know as hot rods. We will have a full tour of their parts and workshop areas.

After another great tour, we wound through the beautiful Carbon Canyon area (including a slow cruise through Sleepy Hollow) and back to home base. I guarantee everybody had a day full of fun and surprises with plenty of chances to buy souvenirs and of course car parts. I hope everybody had a good time and if you couldn’t make the run, plan on joining us next year, the day before the show.



2010 Truck of the Year - Glenn Van Buskirk Castro Valley, CA

A FEW WORDS FROM THE OWNER, GLENN VAN BUSKIRK

I purchased the truck in 1996 and slowly built it over many years with much needed help of expert fabricators like Deetz Performance, Tracy, Ca. and Bartoni Auto Body in Dublin, Ca.

There are so many parts of this truck that are specially built for this truck. The goal here was to build a “one of a Kind” truck that could not be copied by assembling “Off the shelf” parts.

The second goal was to keep the classic look of that year truck so that it could easily be identified, but when you looked closely you found a truck that was anything but just a truck.

Third, the truck needed to sit correctly so it looked mighty and had the “Wow Factor” which I believe the flames, wheels, and engine compartment accomplished this goal.

This truck has got those who would likely never consider owning a truck to comment that this is a truck they would own…

I also own a 1967 Camaro that is almost as nice as this truck and I have 5 or 6 friends that have Camaros and Chevelles and we all park together at shows.

This truck gets all the attention, it has a crowd of people around it all day… The common reaction is “Wow”!

When people ask about the details that go into putting on an event like the F-100 Western Nationals, one of the first questions that arises is HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PLAN SUCH AN EVENT? That’s actually an easy question to answer when you have a dedicated group like you see here. Backed by the supporting cast of the Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited, Ed Oe and his staff work year around to bring you an event that hopefully is memorable and fun. In fact, plans are already in the works for our 30th year....... and those plans include YOU being with us.

We have tried to cover all the bases by pre-planning all of the parking as well as vendor placement to give everybody as much of that great shade that Canyon RV Park is famous for while keeping the venue cozy and friendly. We have once again assembled a first class group of vendors for you to visit with and a sizable prize table that will knock your socks off, so make sure to buy your tickets early... and later in the day too.

A&G Concessions is once again providing the food for our event so be sure to visit Gina and her family when you get hungry or thirsty. If you need to find something or somebody, go up to Dan our DJ. He will make an announcement for you. If you need directions, just ask one of us and we will get you there.

It is hard to believe that so much time has passed since that day back in 1982 when Wendell Smith, Boyd McWilliams, of the Arizona F-100’s and I sat in the parking lot of the Peppermill Inn at the Reno Run and came up with the idea of The River Run in Havasu City AZ., now known as the F-100 Western Nationals. From the early days in Lake Havasu City Arizona to today here in Orange County, this show has maintained its stature as the #1 show for Classic Ford trucks west of the Mississippi.With that in mind, my job over the next year or so is to bring together as much of the history of Pickups Limited and the F-100 Western Nationals as possible. With so much rich history going back to the early days with the Westminster Chapter of Pickups Limited, it will be my pleasure to bring it back for future generations to enjoy, which is long overdue.Take some time during the show to stop by the History Center and learn a bit about where the true roots of Pickups Limited and the F-100 Western Nationals came from while visiting with some old friends... and making a few new ones too!

President’s PageTHANKS FOR COMING TO THIS WEST COAST FORD FAMILY REUNIONWelcome to the 2011 edition of the F-100 Western Nationals. It is once again a great time to host the West Coast’s largest annual reunion of the F-1 and F-100 family. And that is what this show was always and continues to be a gathering of friends who have one common bond, the goal of ensuring these old classic fat fendered Ford trucks don’t fade away into rust and the metal recycling centers. The trucks may be the key element, but the bond that holds us all together is friendship.

As President of Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter, I love and look forward to this event as I know that I will see more of my F-100 friends and family than on any other day of the year. Truth is, I spent some 30-plus years at the helm of Truckin’ and Classic Trucks magazines, followed by my stint at Street Trucks where I personally planted seeds to ensure those magazines continue to service the F-100 market. However, along the way, I was transformed from a Chevy man into a Ford enthusiast due to the fellowship I discovered while covering a multitude of events.

That common bond is what drew me to join Pickups Limited, OC in January of 2004. I not only wanted to continue to attend classic Ford only events, but to be an integral part of a club just like all of you have decided to do as well. In 2004, Orange County had about a handful of active members who met twice a month and hosted an annual event in Lake Havasu City, then called the Truckin’ Nationals. The blueprint for that show mirrored the North/South Run somewhat, the big difference being you never really knew what the weather was going to be even during the Spring of each year. The last year it was held in Arizona, the blacktop parking lot literally melted from the blazing sun, and everyone abandoned the show in favor air conditioning at the hotel’s hospitality room.

So, the decision was made to take a chance and move this annual show to the park-like atmosphere of Canyon RV/Featherly Park in hopes of having weather more hospitable to the F-100 enthusiasts. Havasu attracted about 60 trucks and one vendor for its last year while the Anaheim location has continued to lure more and more Ford truckers each year along with a growing number of vendors who service your truck building needs.

With that said, lean back, enjoy this wonderful day and be sure to greet each and every Ford trucker you meet today as we are truly a unique group of enthusiasts with one major common bond – we all love classic Ford trucks which make us spend a lot of our time ensuring the legacy of the Fat Fendered Ford pickups and panels will endure for generations to come. Thanks for coming. Next year is our 30th Anniversary for the F-100 Western Nationals so start making plans to attend this once in a lifetime event. Pickups Limited, Orange County, is already making special plans for celebrating this special event!

Pickups Limited of Orange County has an-other great event each year that is opened to all vehicles regardless of make, model, or year. Each January Jeff’s Fun Run guides gear heads of all types on a poker run that visits hot spots in the world of Car Culture. Past events have included visits to Classic Performance Products, American Hot Rods, HILLCO Fastener Warehouse, ABS Power Brakes, The Truck Shop & Car Shop, Adams Av-enue Donuts Home of the World Famous Do-nut Derelicts Saturday Cruise, Surf City Garage, DANCHUK, Crevier Clas-sic Cars, The John Force Race Station, Hot Rods & Hobbies, and Original Parts Group. Each stop includes an open house and self guided tour of some of the finest work-shops and suppliers in our hobby. I need a nap just thinking about those places and everything there is to see.
