Teen Center Assistant Program Ages 14–17

$40/month resident; $50/month non-resident

The TC Assistant program offers teens an exciting chance to learn about working with youth in City of Albany Recreation programs. It is designed to give teens opportunities to acquire valuable job skills, work with youth, and meet other young people. Teen Center staff provides supervision, assignments and training.

TC Assistants commit to a limited regular weekly

The Albany Teen Center has changed from an after-school program to a resource offering enrichment through various classes.

Fall 2011 ushers in a new era of Teen Center project-based learning opportunities. The new after-school enrichment program held daily at the Teen Center features classes in new media, dance, art, music technology, and sports.

City staff has been working closely with the Albany YMCA and the Albany School District to discuss how partnering can promote teen services for Albany youth. Three major areas of services for teens are: (1) after-school care; (2) enrichment programs; and (3) homework/academic support. Through such coordination, we ensure major program areas are covered by at least one of the teen service providers.

In changing how teens are served in collaboration with the Albany YMCA and School District, there will ultimately be a decrease in programming redundancies among the agencies and an increase in overall participation.

The Teen Center is the place to come after-school to delve into classes on a variety of interests. Superior teen-centric programming provides young people a chance to have fun, express themselves, build lasting friendships and find trusted mentors. At the Albany Teen Center, we endeavor to empower youth to grow intellectually, creatively, and emotionally in a safe, supervised environment.

Looking for teen after school program? The Albany YMCA also offers an after-school program for AMS students, providing academic monitoring, tutoring, daily snack, and free time. Program is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 3:05–6 pm and Wednesday, 2:10–6 pm. For more information contact Sebastian de la Rosa, Albany YMCA Teen Coordinator, at (510) 525-1130 or [email protected].

For more information about the programs offered on this page, contact Jeremy Allen,

Youth Services Manager, [email protected] or 510 559-7223.

World Literature

A G E S 5 0 – O L D E R

Class reads great, enduring literature from around the world, especially the classics from America, England and Europe. Such fiction, long and short, all delve into universal human concerns such as love, religion and death, and confront persistent, unanswerable questions. Issue of genre, technique, symbolism, and historic background are also considered. Students discuss, challenge, dispute, re-interpret and misquote what the old teacher is trying to say. Memoir Writing

A G E S 5 0 – O L D E R

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a low-pressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrass-ing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed. ALBANY NON-DATE DAY TIME MEETS RESIDENT RES.

Albany Community Center Foyer

Albany resident Jim Callum has been taking photographs for more than thirty years. His camera goes everywhere he does, whether it’s to Japan or for a walk along the East Bay shoreline. He creates images that highlight contrasts in ordinary surroundings, and uses photo techniques which expose infrared light to enhance those differences. Jim says, “I like how a little infrared light helps me see with new eyes.”

July 9–October 3 Albany Community Center Foyer

Both the rural and urban landscape reveal remnants of the past and ironies of the pres-ent, providing a framework for exploring feelings of nostalgia, solitude, tragedy and grace. I am often awestruck by the the qual-ity of light, color, and compositional struc-ture in a moment of everyday life. These are the moments I wish to capture in my work.

With camera in hand, I take snapshots of fleeting pieces of time and space, and return to the studio to paint. I start with a warm colored ground so that even cool paintings of oceans or highways retain a sense of warmth. Working in oil, I paint ‘wet on wet’, allowing colors to merge and commingle while preserving the spontaneity of brush-strokes.

A sense of presence in daily life combined with a passion for color and light, I paint to convey a mood, engender a quiet energy, to illuminate the mundane.

Artists interested in being considered for a show in 2012 can visit www.albanyca.org/arts for more information. The Arts Committee will be reviewing submissions September 12, 2011.

Albany Community Center, Rooms 1 & 2

Clean out your closets and bring your wearable-but-unwanted clothing to the Community Center where you can rummage through everyone else's wearable-but-unwanted items and find a fabulous new-to-you winter wardrobe! Bring one bag or more of your washed, gently worn items (men's, women's, maternity, plus size and children's clothing) and be admitted to our fabulous swap room where clothing will be set out by type (pants, skirts, shirts, blouses, etc.). Choose items and take them home. There won't be a dressing room or mirrors, but you can try things on over your clothes and meet your neighbors and ask them for fashion advice! All sizes welcome.

6:30 pm

Albany Community Center

Busy schedules can make cooking a wholesome nightly dinner

for your family difficult, if not impossible. Join together with

your neighbors to swap meals and feed the whole family for

three nights!

Here's how it works: you bring three family-sized portions

of one homemade main course in containers, and three copies

of your recipe with instructions for freezing/reheating. (You

should make enough of your recipe to feed three families of

four people, or 12 total portions.) Meals should be freezable,

reheatable, or able to last four days in the refrigerator.

We’ll provide snacks and a wine tasting. Socialize with your

neighbors, snack, and have a glass of wine. Fill your three

empty containers with three different meals, then forget about

cooking for a few days!

Join Albany's Green Team

The Volunteer Corps Green Team's mission is to assist City staff and other organizations in increasing wildlife habitat and Albany residents’ opportunities to find nature within city limits. Additional outcomes of its work are strengthened community relationships, fun activities for its members, and a more beautiful city!

The Green Team is self-led, meaning that its members themselves decide on activities for the group, thus allowing for different levels of leadership and participation. The City of Albany’s Environmental Resources Division and Recreation and Community Service Department support the Green Team with guidance, contacts, and tools and materials for certain projects.

To join/apply for membership in the Green Team, simply check the interest box on Albany’s Volunteer Application. If you would like more information about joining the Green Team contact Nicole Almaguer, (510) 528-5760.

Ocean View Community Organic Garden weekly “Open Garden”

Sundays 11 am–1 pm

The Ocean View Community Organic Garden serves Albany citizens who live in apartments or condos with little space to grow food. We strive to foster a spirit of community, with gardeners growing and sharing organic fruit, produce, herbs, and flowers.

The garden is located in Ocean View Park at 900 Buchanan Street behind the tennis courts. The garden consists of 22 plots; 16 community, 1 herb, 2 ADA and 3 educational plots. The yearly non-refundable fee is $60.00 per year. At present, there is a waiting list of several would be gardeners. Contact Recreation & Community Services at (510) 524-9283 for more information about joining the garden.

The Ocean View Community Organic Garden Steering Committee meets five times per year on Sundays during the months of March,

May, August, October and January from 11 am–1 pm. Look on bulletin board at the Community

Center or the bulletin board outside the garden for upcoming meetings, workdays and events.

Join us during our weekly “Open Garden” on Sundays from 11 am–1 pm, whenever the garden gates are open or at our annual Harvest Festival (October 2, 2011)
