SUBARU CORE TECHNOLOGY

Subaru’s Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) has evolved beyond traditional CVTs to become a production-car first: a CVT longitudinally paired with AWD that uses a chain instead of a belt for smooth acceleration, improved fuel efficiency and enhanced performance. Continuously variable transmissions offer a near infinite selection of gear ratios for stepless acceleration, eliminating shift delay and keeping the engine in the most favourable rpm range at all times. This design creates improved performance and efficiency as well as faster response to throttle input. But Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT takes this technology to the next level: this transmission is specifically tuned to provide a more natural feel than other designs for instant response on demand with minimal application of the accelerator pedal. Its sophisticated programming improves both driveability and fuel efficiency with acceleration mapping that’s based on driver input and driving conditions.

By employing a chain instead of a belt, the Lineartronic CVT eliminates the slippage found in other transmissions to enhance efficiency. This chain-driven system has a smaller wound diameter, allowing it to use smaller pulleys but still offer the same ratio coverage as traditional belts, resulting in a lighter transmission and enhancing fuel efficiency even further. A Manual Mode setting – via centre console shifter or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters – gives manual driving enthusiasts even more control: By simulating a 6-speed manual transmission drivers can select the correct engine speed more easily. Available on select Subaru Legacy and Outback models, this is the transmission of choice for those who want instant, seamless response to changing conditions while keeping performance, smoothness and efficiency in perfect balance.

What is a PZEV?

A Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) has been defined by

the California Air Resources Board as one that meets the

state’s Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) tailpipe

standard and produces zero evaporative emissions. A

PZEV is one of the cleanest-running gasoline-powered

vehicles around. In fact, pollution controls are so stringent

and the fuel-burning process is so complete, the exhaust

produced can actually be cleaner than the air outside. In

certain cases, a PZEV is even cleaner than some hybrid or

alternative fuel vehicles. PZEV options are available on the

Legacy, Outback and Forester. All three vehicles are also

SmartWay® certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency for achieving predetermined levels of tailpipe

emissions and fuel efficiency.

These standards rate any vehicle's emissions based on testing for five major types of pollutants in vehicle exhaust:

• Carbon-containing compounds, including hydrocarbons• Oxides of nitrogen, which combine with hydrocarbons to create ground level ozone and smog• Particulate matter, tiny particles of solid matter that lodge in the lungs and deposit on buildings• Carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless, poisonous gas• Formaldehyde, a lung irritant and carcinogen

In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA), the plant where the Subaru Legacy, Outback and Tribeca are manufactured, became the first U.S. assembly plant to directly landfill zero waste materials. This facility, over 800 acres in rural Indiana, is also the first automotive manufacturing site in the U.S. to be named a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat.

In this layout, all drivetrain components – the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and front and rear differentials – are logically aligned close to the centre point of the vehicle. In addition, if any wheel senses slippage, the torque distribution between the front and rear is controlled automatically to maintain optimal traction at all four wheels. The result: Permanent reassurance that you are driving a vehicle famed for its inherent balance, stability and control in a variety of driving conditions.

Increased grip

If your vehicle has four wheels, it makes sense that all four wheels should play a role in keeping that vehicle planted on the road. But in front- and rear-whee-drive vehicles, two of the four wheels are essentially just passengers along for the ride. By transmitting power through all four wheels instead, vehicles equipped with Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD offer increased grip, stability, control and safety – regardless of road or weather conditions.

Lower centre of gravity

Subaru vehicles are built from the ground up to have an extremely low centre of gravity, the cornerstone of this design being the SUBARU BOXER engine placed low in the chassis. This layout, in turn, leads to reduced body roll along with improved handling and stability, without the need for an overly stiff suspension system.

Reduced vibration

With its 180-degree, horizontally opposed configuration, the SUBARU BOXER engine design cuts vibration dramatically by eliminating the inertia of opposing pistons as found in V-shaped or in-line engine configurations. The result of this innovative engine design is instant responsiveness throughout the rev range, unprecedented smoothness and greatly improved vehicle stability. In addition, less engine vibration also creates a more peaceful and relaxing passenger cabin.
