3 Greetings from Dr. A. Susan Carleo, President of LAVC

Buildings, budgets, accreditation and student success. This is our focus for 2011-12. As we begin this new year, it is both a hopeful time and a sad time. We are hopeful as we make progress reVitalizing Valley Col-lege. Our future will be better with our new and renovated buildings. We are sad that we are continuing to face the impact of more cuts. We are now in our third year of downsizing, a direct result of California’s economic woes. As we reduce class offerings we turn away thousands of students who are desperate for what we have to offer. We can only hope that we will be able to reverse this trend next year. However, there is more to Valley than buildings and budgets. This year we embark on our year-long preparation for our compre-hensive accreditation visit which will occur in the spring 2013 semester. This fall marks the beginning of our participation in the national “Achieving the Dream” initiative. For the next twelve months, we will be reviewing our practices so that we can develop a three-year plan to strengthen our ability to help our students succeed. Now more than ever the LAVC Foundation’s support of Valley College makes a difference. The 2011-12 year promises to be rewarding and productive. With the beginning of the new academic year, we have once again strengthened our resolve to make a lasting difference in our community.

A. Susan Carleo, Ph.D.

Alumni Update

Valley College alumnus Dennis McCarthy recently pub-lished his book, “Here’s to the Winners.” McCarthy, who is a columnist with the Los Angeles Daily News, has com-piled a number of his stories into this book. “The gripe I’ve heard most about newspapers is that there’s too much negative news. You want to read the kind of stories that start your day with a smile, a laugh and maybe even a few tears because it touched something inside. If you like to read about longshots coming in, unsung heroes finally getting their due, bad guys losing, and good guys winning, they’re all here.”

As I reflect and celebrate my tenth year with the LAVC Foundation, I would like to sincerely thank all of you who have supported our Foundation. Support has been received from friends in the San Fernando Valley, our alumni, and the faculty and staff of Los Ange-les Valley College. Without your generosity, we simply would not have grown and suc-

ceeded.

I am grateful to those who have volunteered their time on various committees and pro-

jects that include the Scholarship Committee, Arts Council, Athletic Hall of Fame, and Athletic Endowment to name a few. Hours do-

nated to these programs keep them alive and thriving.

This past year, the Foundation awarded over $188,000 in scholar-ships to 277 Valley College students. This is the largest amount the Foundation has awarded ever! Just ten years ago, we awarded

$34,000 in scholarships.

We have distributed $1.1 million towards the construction of the Family Resource Center. Many thanks again to the JH Snyder Corporation for its gift made in 2008/2009. It’s a wonderful center

and is scheduled for an open house in November.

The LAVC Foundation prides itself with “out of the box” thinking for generating revenue and establishing partnerships. Thanks to such collaborations with our Child Development Center, Job Training, and the various PRO LAVC programs. Our Foundation has distributed funds totaling over $580,000 to instructional, departmental, and

A Message from the Foundation President 4

Foundation Annual Report

As the newly elected President of your LAVC Foundation, it is my privilege to thank you for your support and for being our partner

in ensuring student success!

Many thanks to our outgoing President Jason Schaff for his service. During his tenure, Jason helped infuse new blood on our Board of Directors. He advocated for the establishment of the President’s Circle program as well as the donor bench pro-

gram.

LAVC, like many community colleges in California and the nation, has become a school of choice. In these difficult economic times, a com-munity college education is affordable, provides exceptional and life-changing experiences. With state budget cuts and financial uncer-tainty, it is very important for friends like you to support our stu-dents. Think of it as an investment that will pay dividends for years

to come!

In the coming years, our Foundation hopes to offer you more oppor-tunities to give your time, talent, and treasure to support LAVC and its students. Remember, successful students translate to a thriving

economy.

Your Foundation and its Board of Directors has set a goal of increas-ing its assets to $7 million in the next two years. That’s almost dou-ble its current size! Yes, it is aggressive, but we all know that there is a growing gap between what our community college needs and what the State is able to provide. It really comes down to friends like you

to ensure that Valley College continues to support our students!

There are several ways to participate. Join the Alumni & Friends Asso-ciation and reconnect with friends. Be a member of the President’s Circle! Establish a scholarship in memory of a loved one or friend. Buy a bench and honor your team or group of friends. Get your company connected with us! We have a well-regarded Job Training Program and Cooperative Education Program that will support your business and its employees. Participate in your company’s employee payroll deduction and contribute to the LAVC Foundation—some companies will match

your donation!

Do you have leadership skills or have a little time to volunteer? Think about helping out with LAVC’s Vocational Education, the Athletic Hall of Fame, the Athletic Endowment, the Arts Council, or the Historical Mu-seum to name a few! You can get connected with Valley College in so

many ways.

As you may know, resources are so limited at Valley College. But we also realize that over 1 million people have passed through the Valley College door and have benefitted. Please encourage anyone with ties

to Valley College to reconnect and give in what ever way they can.

Thank you again for your continued support and generosity. We hope

to see you around soon at Los Angeles Valley College.

Sincerely,

Bob Oberstein, President of the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation

Class of 1968

student programs. The Foundation also provided another $48,000 in donated assets, or monies donated directly, to Los Angeles Valley

College towards the Media Arts, Library, Museum, and Engineering.

The President’s Circle of Leadership Giving concluded its second campaign year. The President’s Circle helps raise much needed unrestricted dollars for the Foundation so it can help address the college’s most pressing needs. There are 26 members of the President’s Circle, which donated $55,000. Thanks again to Circle members. We hope you continue your membership and encourage

friends and colleagues to join you!

The Athletic Endowment Campaign continues to march towards its goal. The campaign, which started two and half years ago with a goal of raising $100,000 in five years, has raised nearly $47,000 in cash received and pledges. Programs such as the Athletic Hall of Fame and the Green & Gold Club have contributed to alumni awareness

and the march continues towards the goal!

Again, thank you for believing in our mission with your continued sup-

port. We are profoundly grateful for your confidence!

Sincerely,

Raul Castillo Executive Director of the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation

Class of 1988
