On The Cover

in 1946, Bert Weir came to

the Parry sound area where

he helped build the McKellar

lodge, worked in the lumber

camps, became a Boy scout

leader and coached the

McKellar Wild Cats hockey

team. later he attended the

ontario College of art in

toronto, established the

McKellar lodge summer

studio and taught high school

in Windsor. in 1973 he and

his wife elena Zebrauskaite

Weir established loon studios

in Parry sound. in 2002, Bert

and his second wife Joy allan

moved loon studios to

McKellar. Bert Weir set out

to learn everything he could

about the northern ontario

wilderness in a quest to

understand the force that drew

him so powerfully to that place.

he would canoe, walk, sail,

camp and paint, contemplating,

searching and hoping to

discover why the wilderness

affected him so profoundly.

Bert Weir describes his life as

the process of working on one

unending painting.

Isn’t it nice to know that in this increasingly busy, noisy world,

we can go to a place where everything starts in silence and where time

waits while great minds, past and present, speak to us through music?

The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts becomes our

aural sanctuary as the wisdom of the great composers speaks to us

through your friends, the performers, who themselves are in awe of the

greatness they are encountering in the music.

Welcome to the 32nd edition of the Festival of the Sound.

Our programmes this summer will range from the incomparable depth

of the complete Beethoven String Quartet cycle, to the dazzling

virtuosity of Liszt and Paganini, the brilliance of big band jazz and

the grand sounds of choral masterworks, all in the intimate, acoustically

and visually perfect Stockey Centre.

Banff Winners — July 17 to 22In September of 2010, it was a proud moment for the entire Canadian

musical community when the two Canadian entries, the Cecilia and

Afiara Quartets, were named first and second prize winners respectively

at the Banff International String Quartet Competition. We were quickly

on the phone to invite both quartets to participate in the 2011 season

with the repertoire of course including the Mendelssohn Octet for strings.

Liszt at 200 — July 17 to 21In 2010, the Festival of the Sound marked the 200th birthdays of Frédéric

Chopin and Robert Schumann. This year marks the same anniversary

for Franz Liszt. Hear his own works plus music that influenced him,

music that he loved to play and music influenced by him. André Laplante

performs from Liszt’s most monumental work, Book 2 of Années des

pèlerinage, and Adam György, a rapidly rising Liszt specialist, is heard

in recital.

Italian Weekend — July 22 to 24From Friday through Sunday, we celebrate the wide diversity of music

by Italian composers and of others inspired by Italy. Friday’s concerts will

include Paganini’s 24 Caprices, the premiere of Gene DiNovi’s Tarantella

and of course Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. A Taste of Italy on Saturday

evening combines the great food and wines of Italy with operatic arias.

See page 26 for details. On Sunday afternoon, the Festival Baroque

celebrates the rich musical heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries when

Italian composers and the violin-makers of Cremona inspired each other

to greatness. Then Quartetto Gelato brings the weekend to a dazzling

climax with Peter De Sotto’s signature O Sole Mio.

Music from Giverny — July 26 to 29Michel Strauss is Artistic Director of the Giverny International Chamber

Music Festival in the village whose gardens inspired the art of Claude

Monet. He is coming to the Festival of the Sound with an ensemble

of musicians who perform with him there. We also introduce the

Canadian-born soprano Sharon Coste-Poras, who now has a busy

career in the concert halls and opera houses of Europe. The Noon

Concert on July 28, entitled Monet’s Music, features music inspired

by the art and the gardens of Giverny.

The Beethoven Experience — August 2 to 5The Lafayette, New Zealand and Penderecki String Quartets perform

all 16 Beethoven String Quartets plus the Grosse Fugue. Jeffrey Stokes

offers an intense exploration of the life, times and music of Beethoven.

In addition to the lectures, at several concerts he will introduce some

of Beethoven’s musical patrons and friends in Vienna, whose stories

are entwined with the quartets. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear the

richest body of chamber works by a single composer.

Mozart Requiem and Eleanor Daley Requiem — August 6In a concert full of contrasts, hear the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Festival

Chamber Orchestra and a roster of outstanding soloists, all under

the direction of Lydia Adams. Eleanor Daley, born in Parry Sound, is

a Canadian composer whose Requiem was named Outstanding New

Choral Composition by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors

in 1994. Mozart’s last work, the powerful and moving Requiem, was

left incomplete at the time of his death in Vienna in 1791 and has been

surrounded by mystique ever since.

Music from the Inside OutThe Festival’s series of free lectures, interviews and open rehearsals

gives you opportunities to better appreciate the music being heard.

In Conversations with Keith, you are invited to get to know the

performers in a series of personal interviews. Throughout the Beethoven

Experience, Jeffrey Stokes explores the world in which Beethoven

composed his marvellous string quartets.

Island Queen CruisesEnjoy Georgian Bay sunsets as the cruise ship Island Queen takes a

wandering three-hour route through the wild and rugged beauty of the

30,000 Islands, a region recently designated by the United Nations

as the Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere Reserve. These cruises have

been a highlight of every Festival season since our inception, blending

wonderful music, — classical, Dixieland and East Coast — with

breathtaking scenery. Performances are on the lower deck of the

Island Queen and can be heard throughout the ship.

Canada Day Cruise — July 1Celebrate Canada’s birthday with the Shores of Newfoundland,

a “down east” band that specializes in the music of the Maritimes

and Newfoundland. The evening ends on a festive note as the Island

Queen returns to the harbour and drifts for the fireworks display

— a Canada Day tradition since 1991.

A Taste of Italy — July 23A spectacular evening combining our Gala Fundraising Dinner and

our Opera Gala. See page 26 for details.

Winds on the Water — July 27Experience all the surprises of a morning on Georgian Bay aboard

the M.V. Chippewa with the Festival Winds. The players always enjoy

their annual musical cruise and the audience enjoys their informal banter

and outstanding performances. Only fifty tickets are sold, so order early.

Best of Broadway — August 2The Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall is transformed into

a club for a special evening “on Broadway.” The music of George

Gershwin, Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart is performed by Carol

McCartney, whose voice is described as “sweet and swinging, warm and

dramatic,” with the Dave Young Trio. Guests will be seated cabaret-style

at tables. Dessert and coffee are included in the ticket price.

and Joni Mitchell.

Cecilia String QuartetFirst prize-winners of the 2010 Banff International String Quartet

Competition, Canada’s Cecilia String Quartet is currently the Graduate

Resident String Quartet at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould

School. Prior to this appointment, the CSQ was Quartet-in-Residence at

the Schulich School of Music, McGill University, where they studied with

André Roy. Since its inception in 2004, the quartet has held residencies

at Laurier University, The Glenn Gould School, and the University of

Toronto, where the quartet was formed. The Cecilia String Quartet takes

its name from St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music.

Alexander SeredenkoPianist Alexander Seredenko is emerging as a leading voice in the

next generation of Canadian young artists. His electrifying yet deeply

expressive performances have, in recent years, been thrilling audiences

in Canada, Europe, and Asia. He had the honour of performing for Prime

Minister Stephen Harper and world leaders at the G-20 Conference

in Toronto. He recently won the Toronto Symphony National Piano

Competition and performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with

Maestro Peter Oundjian and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy

Thompson Hall in December of 2010. Alexander Seredenko is currently

pursuing his studies at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School

under the tutelage of Dean James Anagnoson.

Since 1988, Strings Across the Sky has taught fiddling in Northern Canada to Aboriginal, Métis and Inuit youth. After only a few days of lessons, students perform in public gaining a new sense of self-esteem. Since many of today’s players are beginners performing before an audience for the first time, what happens on stage is pure magic.

This programme brings back memories of Sunday concerts in the park with a delightful mix of virtuoso solos, light classics, brass band masterworks and big band jazz, including the works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dean Goffin and the young Canadian composers Gabriel Major-Marothy and Marcus Venables. Howard Cable’s Georgian Bay Reflections, inspired by paintings by Doris McCarthy, is presented in memory of the beloved Canadian artist who died in 2010 at the age of 100.

This year, the Festival of the Sound combines

two of our most popular events, our Gala Fundraising Dinner and

our Opera Gala. Join us for this special evening, Saturday, July 23 at

6:00 pm in the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts.

The evening begins with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, served in the

atrium and enjoyed on the waterside deck if the weather is fine.

Dinner is then served in the Festival Performance Hall with wine and

music selected to enhance every course. As you experience the flavours

of Italy, your senses will carry you through an evening of glorious arias

by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Offenbach and Mozart, performed by Leslie

Fagan, Jean Stilwell, Mark DuBois and Guy Few.

By your attendance at A Taste of Italy, you are supporting the

Festival of the Sound in a very important way. A tax receipt for $75

will be issued for each ticket sold. Wine with dinner is included in

the price of the ticket. The dress code is “Parry Sound Elegance,”

ranging all the way from black tie to smart casual. Seating is reserved

at tables for eight. (It is not necessary to purchase the whole table.)

The Festival of the Sound offers intimate performances by outstanding chamber musicians in the spectacular Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on the shores of Georgian Bay. To present world calibre concerts at affordable prices, the Festival Board raises two dollars for every dollar generated at the Box Office. A recent survey of Canadian performing arts organizations with similar budgets showed that 4.7% of the total revenue was raised by individual donations. Our individual donors contributed 18% of our revenue. Thanks to the support of this wonderful membership base, we are now one of Canada’s most successful musical organizations.

All contributions are gratefully received and are eligible for a tax credit receipt. With a donation of $25 or more, you become a member of the Festival of the Sound and receive a pre-Christmas mailing with special offers on passes and merchandise, our newsletter Soundings, early mailing of the season brochure, and listing in the souvenir programme. The Festival Board offers contributors of $250 or more tickets to their concert of choice (excluding Opening Night, cruises and special events).

Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund

Charles and Lois Stockey were supporters of and workers for the Festival of the Sound in its formative years before they moved to Victoria, BC. In 2002, what began with a casual question about what was happening now in Parry Sound led to a donation of $1.7 million to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. Now the Festival has a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the finest in the world for chamber music. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors. To ensure the long-term health of the organization, all memorial donations and other gifts directed to this fund are invested, with the interest used to support annual operations.

Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria and maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound.

Information about the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund is available at all Festival of the Sound concerts. Speak to one of the Directors wearing a “gold badge” or call the Festival Office. Contributions of any size are welcome and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

In the Festival’s innovative education program Music Scores, children in Grades 4 to 6 in thirteen area schools enjoy six concert experiences, some of which have included the True North Brass, a woodwind quintet, a jazz ensemble, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and, most recently, the National Ballet of Canada’s YOU dance program. Prior to each of these concerts, the musicians visit every school, getting to know the students in an informal setting, demonstrating their instruments and preparing them for the concert. Then all 700 children come to the Stockey Centre by bus or on foot to listen to the musicians, now their friends, in a formal concert setting. No opening night audience can match the excitement that precedes each of these concerts.

Tickets will not be accepted for refund or resale. However, tickets may be exchanged up to 24 hours before the performance by contacting the Festival Office. A service charge of $1.00 per ticket will apply. Tickets from Passports or Mini-Passes are not eligible for exchange.
