At Sampler Sunday we discussed briefly (and will return to this topic when we have more time) the variety of ways of signing reproduction samplers and, as part of that discussion, personalizing reproductions. It was most fortuitous that Vickie brought with her a sampler she stitched in 1997, “Elisabeth Pritchard,” for which she added a tribute to the original samplermaker but made it her own, in several ways: changed the sheep to cows since her husband is a large-animal vet and, as we all know, Vickie has a thing for cows, and added her family’s initials, those of her husband and sons. And Linda Danielson also brought a sampler she reproduced in which she added her name and the date of reproduction. Loretta said she hides her initials and the date somewhere within the sampler. Another method: Stitch your name in the margin, and someday, when it is unframed, someone will find your name.

Above, the “candle-flame” section that I’m stitching in the rice stitch, one of my favorite specialty stitches. It is relaxing to execute, and it gives such an exquisite textural effect, especially when stitched with silk threads!

Right, If you, too, would like to do the rice stitch in this section, here’s a wonderful diagram, provided by Linda Vinson of our staff, also known to many of you as the designer behind Needlemade Designs ~ http://www.nordencrafts.com/C-1058/Needlemade-Designs.aspx The rice stitch, a large X, here shown over 4 threads, with each point crossed by a diagonal stitch that can be executed in varying order, but I prefer this order to allow me to “sew” the stitch. (I stitch from right to left.) Develop the stitch sequence for the top 4 parts that best fits your “style” to make this a relaxing stitch for you as well.

... this time, for many reasons, not the least of which was Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett of NeedleWorkPress sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for samplers in a presentation titled “Lest We Forget” ~ She brought a sampler she completed 14 years ago and had this to say about it: “I especially treasure an R & R Reproductions sampler I completed 14 years ago…largely because of its verse (‘If all this world would live in mutual love, it would much resemble that above.’) and also  because I chose to replace its grazing sheep with cows (since my husband is a dairy vet). Rather than include the maker’s personal information in the piece, I opted to thank “Elizabeth Pritchard of 1843” and to include the initials of my own family: NJ, WJ and PJ. How wonderful to be able to “reinvent” samplers of old with our own 21st century adaptations!”

Sampler Sunday was extra special ...

Maegan is holding the beautiful afghan made by Susan, our first donation received this year ~ and this week in the mail came this charming finish, “Live Simply,” from Faye. Thank you, Ladies, for your very kind generosity in sharing your needlework talents for this very worthwhile cause.

It’s the end of the school year for Hannah and Tyler and that means many end-of-the-year programs and functions. Last weekend we enjoyed the Fine Arts Night with beautiful music and dance, and when the program was over, we headed over to Tyler’s football game. He looked so tall in his uniform out there on the field. And I caught a snapshot of Grandpa shaking hands after the Eagles won their first game of the season!
