• OEMstaffcollaboratedwithcampusanduniversity-widepartnerstodesignandreleasetheFLAG—EarlyAlertSystem(EAS)totrackstudents’classattendance,participation,performance,andtoverifyenrollment—alltoenhanceIU’sabilitytoprovideappropriateinterventionstohelpstudentspersist.
• Additionally,throughcampuspartnerships,OEMstaffprovidedIUBstudentswithcampusengagementopportunitiesintheareasofleadership,careerdevelopment,artsandculture,outdooradventure,andservice/sustainability,alongwithprovidingtheappropriatetransitionalexperiencetocollege.
ThisAnnualReportisdividedintotwoareas,Recruiting and Serving students.
RecruitingIntheRecruitmentsectionofthereport,welookcloselyattheworkthatwentintoenrollingourexceptionalincomingclass.OEMstaffmembersteamedwithavarietyofcampusandexternalpartnerstomaketheconnectionsthatultimatelyconvincedthesepromisingstudentstochooseIUBloomingtonoverotherschools.
ServingIntheServicesection,thereportdetailsthevariedeffortsofOEMstafftostrengthenourservicetostudents,faculty,andstaff,alldevelopedtoenhancestudentpersistenceandgraduationfromIUB.
I’mimmenselyproudofwhattheOEMteamofdedicatedprofessionalshasaccomplished,andIthankthosecampuspartnerswhoworkedwithusthisyear.Ialsothankyoufortakingthetimewithmetolookbackandappreciatetheirefforts.

InthisAnnualReportyouwillfindthestories,reports,anddatathathighlighttheoutstandingworkperformedforourstudentsbymycolleaguesintheOfficeofEnrollmentManagement.ThisworkandtheoutcomesarenotachievedinisolationandaretheproductofcombinedworkwithinOEMandthroughpartnershipswithstudents,faculty,andstaffacrossthecampus.
Thefollowingarejustafewnoteworthyhighlights.
• ThestudentsenteringIUBinthefall2011are members of one of the most academically promisingclassesinIUhistorywithanSATaverageof1201andamedianGPAof3.69.
• ThisclassalsorepresentsthebrightestgroupofresidentstudentstoeverenrollatIUBwithanSATaverageof1186andamedianGPAof3.73.
• WeareworkingtokeepIUaffordable,andinarecentsurvey,78%ofadmittedstudentsconsideredIUtobeasignificantfinancialvalue.Additionally,meritfinancialaid/scholarshipsdonotjustawardmeritatIUB.Fortypercentofthestudentswhoreceivedmeritaidalsohadfinancial need.
• OEMprovidedareporttotheEducationalPoliciesCommittee(EPC)andtotheBloomingtonFacultyCouncil(BFC)whichconfirmedthatstudentsenrollingatIUBforfall2011wereoverwhelminglymeeting the admissions standards as set forth by theBFCin2006.
• OEMstaffparticipatedindatacollectionandbenchmarkingfortheIUBbenchmarkingprojectforStudentServiceswhilecollaboratingonthesharedservicesinitiativealongwithdeterminingthebestapproachforaone-stopstudentservicesareaforefficientandeffectivestudentservices.
• IncollaborationwiththeUniversity’semphasistostrengthenourglobalreach,weworkedtotransitiontheIUBOfficeofInternationalAdmissionstotheOfficeofInternationalServicesto meet strategic international goals.
• TwosignificantstaffmembersinOEMretiredthisyear—SusanPugh,AssociateViceProvost

Thisyear’sincomingclassatIUBloomingtonissingularlyimpressive—andnotonlybecauseofitsnear-recordnumbers.True,at7,424students,thisyear’stotalisthehighestsince2008’slargest-everincomingclassof7,564.ButasProvostandExecutiveVicePresidentKarenHansonpointsout,merefigurescan’tcapturetheacademicexcellenceandimpressivediversityofthisyear’sfirst-yearstudents.
“IamdelightedtowelcomeanotheroutstandinggroupofstudentstotheBloomingtoncampus,”Hansonsaid.“MembersoftheClassof2015comefrommanydifferentbackgroundsandbringwiththemaremarkablerangeoftalents,experiencesandinterests.”
PresidentMichaelA.McRobbieechoedthesentiment.“OurrecordenrollmentfiguresacrosstheuniversityandatmostofourcampusesarejustthelatestevidencethatmoreandmorefamiliesarefindingvalueinanIndianaUniversityeducation,’’McRobbiesaid.“Inadditiontosettingnewmarksforenrollment,wearewelcomingoneofthestrongestfreshmenclassesintheuniversity’shistory,whichincludesagreatershareofIndiana’stophighschoolgraduatesthaneverbefore.”
ThisimpressivegroupofnewstudentsalsoreflectsthehardworkofstaffmembersinOEM,whomadeittheirmissiontoseekout,recruit,enroll,serveandsupporttheselatestmembersoftheIUfamily.
AfewfactsshouldservetoputOEM’sachievementinperspective—andbegintopaintapictureofatrulyremarkableclass.
• TheaverageSATscoreforallfirst-yearstudentsis1201,thesecond-highesteverandjusttwopointsshyoftherecordsetin2009.(ThesefiguresincludescoresforstudentswhotooktheACTexam,convertedtotheequivalentSATscore.)
• Theiraveragehighschoolgrade-pointaverageis3.69ona4-pointscale.
• Thenumberofhigh-schoolvaledictoriansroseto157,thehighest total ever.
• Theincomingclassincludes84NationalMeritScholars,ourlargesttotalever.Thesestudents—whocomefromIndiana,Illinois,Ohio,Texas,Kentucky,Minnesota,NewJersey,NewYorkandTennessee—haveanaverageGPAof3.97andanaverageSATscoreof1490.
• 12.8percentofthisyear’sclassaremembersofU.S.minoritygroups(AfricanAmerican,AsianAmerican,HispanicorNativeAmerican).Whenweincludethe3.0percentofstudentswhoreportedtwoormoreraces,ttheshareforU.S.minorityis15.8percent—atotalof1,175membersoftheincoming class.

• Arecord10.2percentofthemembersofthisfirst-yearclassareinternationalstudents;that’s754newstudentsfromaroundtheglobe.
• TheaverageSATscoreforIndianaresidents in the incoming class is 1186,upfivepointsfromlastyearandthehighesteverforin-statestudents.
• Theaveragehighschoolgrade-pointaverageforin-statestudentsis3.73.
• 40.7percentofnewin-statestudentswereinthetop10percentoftheirhigh-schoolclass,thesecondstraightyearthefigurehastopped40percent.
• TheshareofIndianastudentswhocompletedthestate’sacademichonorsdiplomawas86.7percent,makingthisthefourthstraightyearthatthispercentagehasincreased.
Thesenumbers,impressiveastheyare,onlytellpartofthestory.ThestorybecomesclearerwhenoneconsidershowmuchIUBloomingtondidtoeasethefinancialburdensoffamiliesduringthesedifficulteconomictimes.Evenwhileenrollingoneofthemostacademically talented and diverse classes of in-statestudentsintheUniversity’shistory,wearealsoprovidedarecordamountofneed-based aid.
Forexample,fiveyearsago,thecampusprovided$1.2millionforthe21stCenturyScholarsCovenantprogramand$1.16millionforthePellPromiseprogram.Thisyear’sexpendituresareprojectedtobe$8.7millionfor21stCenturyScholarsCovenantand$1.8millionforPellPromiseforallcohorts.Thisrepresentsa345percentincreaseinfundingfortheprograms,whichcombinewithstateandfederalfundstomeetlow-incomestudents’fullcostofattendingIU.
Insum,thisyear’sgroupofbeginningstudentsistrulyaclassofdistinction—recruitedandservedbyadistinctivegroupofenrollment-managementprofessionals.

Thisyear’sexceptionalincomingclasswasnoaccident.IU’sgreatclassesneverare.Suchclassesdon’tsimplyhappen.Rather,theyaretheproductofaconcerted,coordinated
efforttomeetseveralenrollmentgoals,includingquality,diversity,internationalbreadthandaffordability.
Theongoingworkofclass-buildingisguidedbyaplanthattakesallofthesecompetingandcomplementarygoalsintoaccountandbalancestheminsuchawaythatthewhole—theprospectiveclassasaunit—istrulygreaterthanthesumofitsparts.Ourplanforstudentrecruitmentisconstantlyupdatedandstrengthenedthroughtheuseofresearch,datamodelingandpredictiveanalytics—vitalworkthatiscarriedoutbytheEnrollmentPlanningandResearchstaff,usingcutting-edgetoolsandtechniques.
It’sahugeandcomplextask—onethatneverends,really,asOEMalwayslookswellbeyondtheupcomingyearasitestablishesitsrecruitmentgoalsandformulatesitsplantoreachthem.Andwiththosegoalsinmind, all members of OEMstaffsettoworkonawiderangeofrecruitmentefforts.Someoftheseeffortsaregearedtowardmaking connectionswithprospectivestudents,oftenyearsbeforeafinalcollegechoiceismade.Someaim to identify and attract high-ability students to IU, thosewithimpressiveacademicrecordsorspecialtalents.Otherrecruitmenteffortsfocusonensuringthat affordabilityisacentraltenetofrecruitmentand that traditionally underrepresented students are activelyencouragedtoattendIU.Stillotherinitiativesaredesignedtoensurethattheincomingclassdemonstratesthetypeofgeographic rangethatmarksatrulyexceptionalclass.
Bysharingafewspecificrecruitmenteffortsundereachofthefivegeneralareas,wehopetoatleast

begintoexplainhowanexceptionalclassmakesitswayheretoBloomington.
Making connectionsWhenallissaidanddone,studentrecruitmentrestsontheideaof“ensuringthefit,”makingcertainthatIUsomehowfeelsrightforaparticularstudentandthatthestudentisrightfortheUniversity.OEMbeginsthisprocessearlyon—ofteninastudent’searlyhighschoolyears—witheventsandoutreacheffortsmeantto create a strong connection to IU. Those connections continuethroughthestudent’syearsinBloomingtonandevenbeyondgraduationfromIU.Thisyear,those
importantconnectionswereforgedinanumberofways:
•Admissionsdevelopedandimplementedthreemajor recruitment campaigns:theApplyNowCampaign;theAcademicCampaign:DiscoverYourIntellectualAdventure;andtheDepositCampaign.
•Admissionstaffmembers traveled to morethan550highschools for visits and
participatedin80collegefairsaroundthenation.
• Alumni Student RecruitersworkingonbehalfofAdmissionsattendedapproximately115collegefairsin20statesandJapan.
• Admissions’MarketingandCommunicationsteamlaunchedanumberofnew communication streams,includingdynamicanddate-orevent-drivenemailsandpostcards.Thisyear,approximately65differentemailcommunicationsand10postcardsweresenttoseveraldifferentgroups,includingprospectivestudentsinthesophomore,juniorandseniorclassesofhighschool;applicantstoIU;admittedIUstudents;andparentsofadmittedstudents.

made 550 high school visits and participated in
80 College Fairs. They also processed more than 35,200 applications.

• MarketingandCommunicationsalsoredesigned the electronic newsletter aimedathighschoolguidancecounselors,renaming it the B-Town Bulletin.
• DigitaloutreachalsoplayedanimportantroleinmanyOEMeffortsaimeddirectlyatprospectivestudents.Forinstance,
Interactive Communicationcreated the IU Bloomington YouTube channel andusedittopresentseveralStudent Experience videos created by membersofanewlyformed Student Advisory Team. Also, the staff in ScholarshipslaunchedarobustsocialmediastrategyincorporatingFacebook,TwitterandQR(QuickResponse)codes in its effort to recruitstudents.
•Finally,connectionswerealsomadebybringingprospectivestudentsandtheirfamilies to IU for a variety ofcampusvisits.IntotaltheBloomingtoncampuswelcomedsome30,000visitors,includingthosewhoattended 21st Century Scholars Day(500visitors),Experience IU Day(aneventdesignedfor Indiana high school
sophomoresthatattractednearly400visitors),Red Carpet Days,(eventsforadmittedstudentsandtheirfamiliesthatdrewmorethan3,000peoplethisspring),andDiscover IU Days(thedailyvisitoptionthatdrewnearly21,000visitorstocampus).
High-ability studentsClearly,inbuildinganexceptionalincomingclass,findingandrecruitinghigh-achievingstudentsisapriorityconcern.Andintoday’sultra-connected,highlycompetitiveenvironment,academicallytalentedstudentsenjoyawealthofoptionswhenitcomestohighereducation.Thisyear,asineveryyear,theOfficeofScholarshipsandotherOEMdepartmentstooka
varietyofinnovativestepstobringrecordnumbersofthesehigh-achievingstudentstoIU.Forexample:
• ScholarshipsandAdmissionspartneredforAcademic Excellence Overview—acampus-visitprogramtargetinghighschooljuniorsinIndianaandsurroundingstates—whichdrewnearly350high-achievingstudentstotheIUcampusfromallovertheMidwest.
• ScholarshipsandInteractiveCommunicationpartneredtocreateandlaunchaLive Video Chat,aWeb-enabledeffortthatallowedcurrentIUstudentscholarstointeractwithprospective,high-achievinghighschoolstudents.
• ScholarshipsandSystemsDesign&DevelopmentjoinedforcestocreatetheBrain Campaign — a multimediarecruitmentcampaignforhigh-achieving high school juniors.Thecampaign—informed by focusgroupsand direct studentfeedbackaboutwhatmattersmostwhenitcomestocollegechoice—includedprint,email,aninteractivewebsiteandsocial media.
• Notsurprisingly,staffmembersintheOfficeofScholarshipswerethemostintenselyinvolvedintherecruitmentofacademicallygiftedstudents.Herearejustafewoftheeffortstheyundertookthisyear:
— Employingarobuste-communicationplan,andworkinginpartnershipwithninedifferentcampusentities,Scholarshipsincreasedthe

EachoftheseareasplaysavitalroleinmakingthestudentexperiencespecialatIU,andstaffmembersineachareanaturallyhaveparticularareasofexpertiseandexperience.
Still,tomakesurethatstudentsremainatthecenterofallwedo,thestaffofthesevariousofficesoftenworkinpartnershipandnetworksthatignoredepartmentallinesandboundaries.
There’sreallynoeffectivewayforanyindividualordepartmentinOEMtoworkcompletelyindependentlyoftheothers.

— LaunchedthefullfamilyofCox Scholarship programs on the Bloomingtoncampusbyaddingthreenewprograms:CoxEngagementScholars,CoxExploratoryScholarsandCoxAccessScholars.These,withthetwoexistingprograms(CoxLegacyScholarsandCoxResearchScholars),bringthetotaltofiveCoxScholarshipsatIUBloomington.

estimatethenetcosttoattendIUBloomington.Toreceiveanetpriceestimate,astudentsubmitsdetailsabouthimself/herselfandhisorherfamilysimilartothedataprovidedontheFreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid(FAFSA).In

Geographic rangeEnsuringthatourstudentsdevelopaworldwideperspectiveiscriticallyimportantinthisincreasinglyglobalsociety,andoneofthemosteffectivewaysoffosteringthatperspectiveistobringasmuchoftheworldheretoBloomingtonaspossible.InOEM,wedothatbymakingsureourclassesreflectgeographicdiversity,withstudentscomingfromeverycornerofIndiana,fromacrosstheUSandfrom66countries.Again,thisdiversitycan’tsimplyhappen.It’stheresultofintensiveandvariedeffortsonmanyfronts,includingthefollowing:

Despitewhatthetermmayimply,effectiveenrollment management involves far more thanmeremanagementandextendswellbeyondsimplyenrollingstudents.OEM
believesthatrecruitingandenrollingthebestmixofstudents,thoughcritical,isjustthefirststep.TotrulyfulfillourmissionthestudentswhoenrollatIUmustsucceed,graduate,goontooutstandingcareeropportunities,andbecomeengagedmembersofIndianaUniversity'salumnifamily.
Thekeytothatprocessisservice,givingourstudentstheinformation,support,encouragementand assistance they need to reach their goals andexceedtheirownexpectations.Weworkhard—ineveryOEMofficeanddepartment,throughtheeffortofeverystaffmember—tomaketheIUexperienceonethatistrulyexceptional.Lives are changed here, andwe’reproudandhumbledtobeagentsofthat change.

RetentionOncetheearly-semesterprogramshavehelpedputnewstudentsonfirmfooting,theemphasisinOEMshiftstoensuringtheirsuccessforthelonghaul.Streamlinedsystems,specialeventsandhigh-techtoolscombinetohelpstudentssmoothlynavigateprocessessuchasregistrationandcourseselection.Allofthesesupports,manyofthemprovidedbytheOfficeoftheRegistrar,simplifystudents’livesandhelpthemstayfocusedontheacademictaskathand.Thisyear,asineveryyear,studentretentioneffortsweremanyandvaried.Hereareafewexamples: • FYEsponsoredaFirst Year Experience

• TheOfficeoftheRegistrarwasinstrumentalintherecentrolloutofanewversionofIU Mobile, whichfeaturedatotalsiteredesignandrewrittenmobileapplications.Thenewversion,testedextensivelybyRegistrarstaffpriortoitslaunch,introduced Oncourse Mobileandastudent-centeredcalendarapp.
• Workingwithcampuspartners,Registrarstaffalsoimplementeda new waitlist systemthathelpsstudentsimmenselyinsecuringtheiroptimalcoursescheduleeachsemester.
• TheOfficeoftheRegistraralsoparticipatedinIU’seTexts Initiative.Thisinitiative,launchedasapilotinMarch2011,enhancesthestudentexperiencebyprovidingelectroniccopiesoftextbooksandallowingstudentstoparticipateinonlinedialogueswithclassmatesaboutthecoursematerial.
• TheOfficeoftheRegistrarwasalsodeeplyinvolvedinhelpingtodevelopthenewall-campusinitiative, IU FLAG-Early Alert System(EAS),whichisdesignedspecificallytofacilitatethesuccessofIUstudents.AvitalpartofEASistheStudentPerformanceRoster,whichRegistrarstaffhelpedtodesignandlaunchinFall2011.TheStudent Performance RosterwillhelpIUimprovestudentretentionbygivingfacultyaunifiedmeansofrecordingandassessingstudents’attendance,participationandperformance,makingitpossibletonoticeandaddressacademicproblemsearlyon.

CollaborationOEM’scommitmenttoservicedoesn'tendwithstudents;italsoextendstoourcolleaguesinotherdepartmentsontheIUcampus.Inshort,wetrytoprovidetoolsandtalentsthatcanhelpotherdepartmentsdotheirbestwork.Atthesametime,wetapintothedeepandvariedexpertiseofmanyon-campuspartnerstomakeourownworkmoreeffective.It’ssimple,really:Weassisttheirefforts,theyaddtoours,andstudentsreaptheultimatebenefit.Thisyear’slistofsupportiveorcollaborativeprojectsislongandwide-ranging.Herearejustafewexamples:
• ThisyearOEMmadeaspecialefforttosupportstudentprivacyandconfidentialitythroughaFERPA outreach to faculty.RespondingtoajointrequestfromtheViceProvostforFacultyand Academic Affairs and the Vice Provost for UndergraduateEducation,theOfficeoftheRegistrardevelopedanewFERPAtutorialforfacultyandlaunchedanewwebpresenceforfacultyissues.These efforts gavefacultyinsight on holding conversationswithstudents’parents,handling classroom activitieswithconfidentiality,advising,orwritingletters of recommendation.
• TheOfficeoftheRegistrarprovidesinformationtothecampusunitstosupporttheiroperationalneeds,astheydevelopprograms,seekaccreditation,securegrants,orperformretentionefforts.Thisyear,Registrarstaffrespondedtomorethan200specificrequestsforinformation,providedtrainingfor50individualsacrosstheBloomingtoncampusandprovidedongoing consultationandsupportthroughourwebsites.
• Schedule BuilderisanOfficeoftheRegistrar
systemthatisdesignedtohelpcampusdepartmentscreatethecoursescheduleeachsemester.ScheduleBuilderhasbeenopentotheentirecampusforseveralyears,butitsreliability
and effectiveness have made it the sole data entry mechanismforthesummer2012scheduleofclasses.
• Thisyear,OSFAprovided10financial aid training sessionstovariousdepartmentsresponsibleforawardingdepartmentalscholarships.
• StaffinEnrollmentPlanningandResearchdevelopedseveralstudies to assess the effectivenessofvariouson-campusprogramsandpractices.Forinstance,theyconductedevaluationsoftheIUPellPromiseand21stCenturyCovenantprogramsandconductedadetailedsurveyofadmittedstudentstogleaninformationabouthowtoimprovetherecruitmentprocess.
• MembersoftheInteractiveCommunicationstaffofferedtheirexpertisetomanyotherdepartmentstohelpthoseofficesimprove their interactions with current and prospective students. This year,thelistofpartnersincludedtheUniversityDivision,theDeanofStudents,theOfficeoftheBursarandtheSchoolofEducation.
• FYEstaffjoinedotherdepartmentsinlaunchingtwospecialeventsthisyear:The INCrowd and Paint the U-Gym Red.
