(A) The cell bursts due to water movement into the cell

(B) The cell will shrink because cytoplasm diffuses out of the cell

(C) The cell swells due to water movement into the cell.

(D) The cell stays the same because the cell wall prevents any increase in size.

3 To which scientist is the discovery of the nucleus inside cells attributed?

(A) Robert Brown

(B) Robert Hooke

(C) Anton van Leeuwenhoek

(D) Rudolf Virchow

4 Identify which one of the following is the principal ecological role of decomposers in an ecosystem.

5 The clown fish dwell among the tentacles of the tropical sea anemone. The anemones are capable of stinging most fish, but the clown fish possess a special mucous coating that prevents the discharge of the anemone's stinging cells effecting it. The clown fish is protected from predators by the stinging cells of the anemone and in turn, the highly territorial clown fish, guards the anemone from its predators.

The symbiotic relationship described between the clown fish and the anemone would best be described as:

(A) commensalism

(B) parasitism

(C) mutualism

(D) allelopathy

6 The sketch map below shows the distribution of gorse in an area of heathland.

In order to determine the population density of gorse bushes, five quadrats were randomly placed as shown above. Each quadrat is 10m X 10m, giving an area of 100m2.

Use the five quadrats to determine the average population density of gorse bushes.

(A) 4 bushes/100m2

(B) 18 bushes/100m2

(C) 20 bushes/100m2

Question 16 (6 marks)

A year 11 biology student set up the following experiment to investigate the relationship between surface area and reaction rates. Below is a copy of his written report.

Relationship between surface area and reaction rates.

Aim: To investigate the relationship between the surface area of liver pieces and the rate at which oxygen gas is produced when the liver reacts with hydrogen peroxide.

Method1. Cut three cubes of liver, each 1cm x 1cm x 1cm.2. Put one cube in a test tube labelled number 13. Cut the second cube into 4 equal parts and place all four pieces into a

second test tube labelled number 24. Cut the third cube into 8 equal parts and place all eight pieces into a

third test tube in a test tube labelled number 3.5. Add 15mL of hydrogen peroxide to each test tube and immediately

place balloons over each test tube 6. Measure the circumference of each balloon every 2 minutes for 10

minutes and record your results.
