T he Port of Gijón opens up a new chapter in its history by commis-
sioning the extension works, being far-reaching due to their magnitude and placing El Musel at the lead of the big European ports by offering a line of 1,250 metres for berthing and with a depth of over 22 metres.
This extension means a strong bet on the possibilities of this Port as a stra-tegic location at the intersection of the large east-west and north-south trans-oceanic routes. With the appropriate effort, this advantage should allow it to become an Atlantic Arc Port Hub since its dimensions, load capacity and geo-graphical cover are adequate for this.
The new infrastructure is not only es-sential for the Port itself, but it also plays a decisive role in the future of Asturias and the northwest of Spain, as the Port of Gijón is one of the main development and employment promot-ers in the region, generating a substan-tial part of its economic and industrial activity.
Next to the new opportunities open-ing up before us we cannot forget the burden implied by the amortization of the extension works on the results of the Port. In this way and in spite of the good health of the port business, re-flected in the EBITDA, the impact of including this amortization forces us to
work twice as hard in its management, in the austerity regarding expenses and in the commercial task aimed at attracting new traffic.
The future project for the Port of Gi-jón is a shared project both within the scope of local and regional authorities and in the business area, for which reason we appreciate the backing and collaboration received to make El Mu-sel a “first category” Port in the future European scenarios. We will continue working to attain a Port that is trust-worthy among clients, investors and citizens.

E l Puerto de Gijón abre una nueva página en su historia al recep-
cionar definitivamente unas obras de ampliación, trascendentes por su mag-nitud, y que sitúan a El Musel a la ca-beza de los grandes puertos europeos al ofrecer una línea de 1.250 metros de atraque con más de 22 metros de calado.
Esta ampliación supone una apuesta fuerte por las posibilidades de este Puerto como emplazamiento estratégi-co en la intersección de las grandes ru-tas transoceánicas este-oeste y norte-sur. Esta ventaja debe permitirnos, con el esfuerzo adecuado, convertirnos en un Puerto hub del Arco Atlántico ya que nuestra dimensión, capacidad de carga y cobertura geográfica son ade-cuados para ello.
La nueva infraestructura no sólo es clave para el propio Puerto, sino que juega un papel decisivo en el futuro de Asturias y del noroeste español, ya que el Puerto de Gijón es un promotor principal de desarrollo y empleo para la región, pues en él se genera una
parte sustancial de la actividad econó-mica e industrial de la misma.
Junto a las nuevas oportunidades que se abren ante nosotros no podemos obviar la carga que supone para los resultados del Puerto la amortización de las obras de ampliación. Así, a pesar de la buena salud del negocio portuario reflejada en el EBITDA, el impacto de la incorporación de esta amortización nos obliga a redoblar nuestros esfuerzos, tanto en términos de gestión como de austeridad en el gasto y en la labor comercial destinada a la captación de nuevos tráficos.
El proyecto de futuro del Puerto de Gi-jón es un proyecto compartido tanto en el ámbito de las autoridades locales y regionales como en el ámbito em-presarial, por lo que agradecemos el respaldo y la colaboración que se nos brinda para convertir a El Musel en un Puerto de “primera categoría” en los futuros escenarios europeos. Con-tinuaremos trabajando para lograr un Puerto generador de confianza entre clientes, inversores y ciudadanos.

2 011 has been an important year in the history of the Port of Gijón
as the extension works for of the Port of Gijón have commenced operating: a top level port infrastructure and a great asset for its hinterland, particularly for Asturias and Castile-León, since the Port of Gijón is now provided with docks of great depth that give it the opportunity to attract new traffic.
As a first result, the extension has allowed for the construction of a rega-sification plant which brings the Port of Gijón closer to its objective of beco-ming an energy and industrial pole for the entire Cantabrian coastline. This plant, with Enagás applying all the Know-how accumulated through its long experience for its construction, includes the best techniques available and the latest processing technologies, both for the environmental and safety/operating points of view, opening up new business opportunities for the Port of Gijón. Furthermore, the land gained from the sea resulting from the extension works have made it possible to decongest the docks dedicated to iron and coal minerals of the first bulk
terminal of Spain, the European Bulk Handling Installation (EBHI).
The success of the Sea Motorway bet-ween Gijón and Montoir, in Nantes Saint-Nazaire, noticeably increased road traffic last year, 2011, and has ex-tended the area of influence of the Port beyond the Plateau to reach Portugal.
On the other hand, the growing contai-ner traffic has seen its reinforcement in May 2011 with the installation of a second gantry crane. This crane has doubled the operating capacity of the Container Terminal, halving the time ships have to remain in the Port and enabling the simultaneous operation of two container ships. We have re-cently shared experiences regarding container traffic with two managers of the Port of Ningbo who have worked with us for several months. They both participated in the Programme for Port Management Training, organised each year by the Port of Gijón, in which na-tional and international experts tackle issues related to port management, logistics and transport. This exchange is the result of the collaboration and
cooperation agreement existing bet-ween the Port of Ningbo (province of Zheijang) and the Port of Gijón.
These last two successes achieved put the Port on the track towards diversi-fying its traffic, historically centred on solid bulk, making it stronger within the current context of generalised economic activity decrease at all levels (regional, national and international); a decrease which has obviously also affected port traffic, registering a global 3.44% drop regarding tonnes.
Finally, the excellent news received by the Port of Gijón in October 2011, being selected as being selected as a port be-longing to the European Core Network, should be highlighted as this leads it to be a strong candidate to form part nowadays of the multimodal corridors promoted by Europe within the sustai-nable freight transport networks.
All these achievements have been pos-sible thanks to the work carried out by the Port Community and to the impli-cation of all those making up the Port Authorities human team.

E l año 2011 ha sido un año impor-tante en la historia del Puerto de
Gijón pues han entrado en explotación las obras de ampliación del Puerto de Gijón: una infraestructura portuaria de primer nivel y un gran activo para su hinterland, especialmente para Astu-rias y Castilla y León, pues el Puerto de Gijón está ahora dotado de muelles de gran calado con los que opta a la captación de nuevos tráficos.
Como primer resultado, la ampliación ha permitido construir una planta regasifi-cadora que acerca al Puerto de Gijón a su objetivo de constituirse en polo ener-gético e industrial de la cornisa cantá-brica. Esta planta, en cuya construcción Enagás ha aplicado todo el Know-how acumulado a través de su larga expe-riencia, incorpora las mejores técnicas disponibles y las últimas tecnologías de proceso, tanto desde el punto de vista medioambiental como de seguridad y operación, abriendo al Puerto de Gijón nuevas oportunidades de negocio. Ade-más, los terrenos ganados al mar por medio de las obras de la ampliación han permitido descongestionar los muelles dedicados al mineral de hierro y carbón
de la primera terminal de graneles de España, la European Bulk Handling Ins-tallation (EBHI).
El éxito de la Autopista del Mar entre Gi-jón y Montoir, en Nantes Saint-Nazaire, ha incrementado notablemente el tráfi-co rodado el pasado año 2011 y ha am-pliado la zona de influencia del Puerto más allá de la Meseta hasta Portugal.
Por otra parte , el creciente tráfico de contenedores se ha visto reforzado, en mayo de 2011, con la instalación de la segunda grúa pórtico. Esta grúa ha duplicado la capacidad operativa de la Terminal de Contenedores, reduciendo a la mitad el tiempo de estancia de los buques en el Puerto y posibilitando la operación simultánea de dos porta-contenedores. Recientemente hemos compartido experiencias, relativas al tráfico de contenedores, con dos di-rectivos del Puerto de Ningbo que han trabajado con nosotros durante varios meses. Ambos han participado en el Programa de Formación en Gestión Portuaria, que organiza anualmente el Puerto de Gijón, y en el que expertos nacionales e internacionales abordan cuestiones relacionadas con la gestión portuaria, la logística y el transporte. Este intercambio es fruto del acuerdo de colaboración y cooperación existen-te entre el Puerto de Ningbo (provincia de Zheijang) y el Puerto de Gijón.
Estos dos últimos éxitos cosechados encaminan al Puerto en la senda de la diversificación de sus tráficos, his-tóricamente centrados en los graneles sólidos, y lo hacen más fuerte en el contexto actual de descenso generali-zado de la actividad económica a todos los niveles (regional, nacional e inter-nacional); descenso al que obviamente no ha sido ajeno el tráfico portuario, registrándose una caída global del 3,44% en toneladas.
Por último, cabe destacar la excelen-te noticia recibida por el Puerto de Gijón en octubre 2011, al haber sido seleccionado como puerto de la Core Network Europea y ser, a día de hoy, firme candidato a formar parte de los corredores multimodales que Euro-pa promueve dentro de las redes de transporte sostenible de mercancías.
Todos estos logros han sido posibles gracias a la labor desarrollada por la Comunidad Portuaria y a la implica-ción de todas las personas que inte-gran el equipo humano de la Autoridad Portuaria.
