The Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex is home to the Providence College field hockey and men's lacrosse team. This $6-million state-of-the-art facility is one of the top athletic complexes to house lacrosse in the Northeast. The Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex opened its doors in August of 2005. In five seasons at "The Complex," the Friars have posted a 14-17 (.452) mark, including a 12-4 mark in four seasons of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The facility helped catapult Providence to two MAAC Championships (2006, 2007) and a return to

the NCAA Tournament in both those seasons. The Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex gives Providence a top-level facility as it competes in one of the nation's premiere lacrosse leagues, the BIG EAST Conference.

The Concannon Fitness Center is a $15-million facility, which opened in Au-gust of 2007. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. It houses the Friars' Jimmy Walker Strength & Conditioning Center as well as offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. The multi-level facility also houses a wide variety of nautilus, car-diovascular and free-weight equipment, which is open to the student body. Memberships also are available to the local community, alumni, faculty and staff. The varsity weight room is designed for use by student-athletes only, and is located on the first floor. The majority of the strength and condition-ing curriculum is conducted in the facility - in addition to the Astroturf field, the Peterson Recreation Center and Taylor Natatorium.

The Canavan Sports Medicine Center opened during the 2007-08 aca-demic year and became fully operational in August 2008. The center is the primary sports medicine facility for each of the College's 300+ student-athletes and its working space is roughly 4,000 square feet. This state-of-the-art facility includes nine treatment tables with assorted modality equipment, office space for the eight certified athletic trainers on staff. The space also provides two physician clinic offices, where primary care, orthopedic, chiropractic and podiatric physicians evaluate our student-athletes on a weekly basis. There also is a large rehabilitation/exercise area in the facility that houses a SwimEx rehab pool, one eight-person hot plunge pool and one eight-person cold plunge pool.

Located in The Concannon Fitness Center, the varsity strength & con-ditioning facility is a 3,600 square foot area dedicated to the Friars' 19 intercollegiate athletic teams. The facility houses over 10 tons of free weights, including dumb bells ranging from five to 150 pounds and a full set of kettle bells. All hand weights, iron plates and bumper plate sets are engraved with one of the College's athletic logos. There are six Power Racks, each with an Olympic Weight-lifting platform. These training sta-tions are extremely versatile and allow numerous athletes to perform a variety of exercises simultaneously. The facility also houses 'tools' such as stability balls, medicine balls, resistance bands, weighted vests, weighted jump ropes, plyometric jump boxes, dot drill mats, slide boards, lateral slant boards, lateral skaters, agility ladders, hurdles and numerous appa-ratuses to develop trunk strength and core stabilization. There also are two Woodway high performance treadmills that max out at 16.5 miles per hour.

6 PROVIDENCE MEN'S LACROSSE • NCAA TOURNAMENT 2004 • 2006 • 2007

Head Coach Chris Burdick enters his 13th season at Providence College, leading the Friars into new territory on the collegiate lacrosse landscape. After nine years as members of the Metro-Athletic Athletic Conference (MAAC), 2010 saw Providence become part of the newly-created BIG EAST lacrosse league. The formation of BIG EAST lacrosse allows Providence to compete regu-larly with national title contenders, while giving the Friars national visibility that is unprecedented in collegiate lacrosse. The Friars struggled through their first year in the league, dropping all six conference games while going 0-14 on the season. Burdick will try to get the Friars back to the top of their league, as they were consistently in the MAAC, where he led the Friars to an unprecedented nine-consecutive conference tournament appearances (2001 - 2009). While in the MAAC, Providence captured four regular-season titles (2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008). The Friars also claimed the MAAC Tournament Championship crown in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and advanced to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament during each of those campaigns. Burdick has compiled an overall record of 80-110, with a total record of 59-36 in conference play (BIG EAST and MAAC). The Friars recorded their best league finishes in 2003, 2005 and 2008 with identical MAAC records of 7-1. In 2006, Burdick guided the Friars to a program-best 10 wins overall (10-7), tying them with PC's 1985 squad, which also finished with 10 victories (10-2). At the conclusion of the 2008 season, Burdick was named Anaconda Sports/MAAC Coach of the Year for leading the Friars to their fourth regular-season league title in six years. Burdick, who has built a championship program predicated on defense, has guided the Friars to a top-10 ranking in scoring defense among all NCAA Division I men's lacrosse programs in four of the last eight seasons. The Friars achieved their highest ranking (No. 2) in 2008, after allowing just 6.47 goals per game. Burdick is also credited with the recruitment and development of the first players at Providence College to be selected to the All-MAAC First and Second Teams after PC joined the conference in 1996. In all, Burdick has had 20 players earn All-Conference honors a total of 30 times, including Brian O'Rorke, who finished his eligibility in 2004 as the program's most decorated player. O'Rorke was a three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team selection (2002, 2003 & 2004). O'Rorke also earned MAAC Rookie of the Year honors under Burdick's guidance, in 2001. James Courter '07 and Ben Johnston '08 also earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. A Friar has earned the honor in five of the last seven seasons. In January of 2005, O'Rorke became the first lacrosse player from Providence to get drafted by Major League Lacrosse. The New Jersey Pride took O'Rorke in the 13th round (73rd overall) of the supplemental draft held in Philadelphia, Pa. In January of 2008, former Friar goalkeeper Peter Littell ('07) was added to the Long Island Lizard's 35-man roster and was invited to training camp. Burdick also helped to develop the program's first-ever All-America selections in Michael Farley and Ben Johnston '08. Both players earned USILA Honorable Men-tion All-America accolades in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Burdick placed a Friar on the all-BIG EAST team in the league’s inaugural campaign, as Ryan Reidl earned second team honors. Burdick came to Providence with an impressive resume, having earned valuable experience with some of the top teams in collegiate lacrosse. A 1991 graduate from the University of Delaware, he was one of the top goalkeepers to ever play for the Blue Hens. Upon graduation from Delaware, Burdick quickly got into coaching and began to establish himself as one of the best young evaluators of talent in collegiate lacrosse. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Notre Dame in 1992. He helped guide the Fighting Irish to two-consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. After two years at Notre Dame, Burdick returned to Delaware to serve as the defensive coordinator for the 15th-ranked Blue Hens in 1994. In 1995, he was named the offensive coordinator. While at Delaware, Burdick earned his master's degree in health, physical education and recreation. He continued to work with top programs when he became an assistant coach for the 12th-ranked UMass Minutemen in 1996. At UMass, Burdick coached the team's goalies and worked with the defense. The following year, he went to Cornell to become the assistant head coach. He spent one season with the Big Red under coaching legend Richie Moran before coming to Providence. In addition to his work as a coach in the collegiate ranks, Burdick is very involved with lacrosse at all levels, having made many speaking appearances at

various clinics. He also served as the president of the MAAC Lacrosse Coaches' Association in 2003, and has been a member of the regional advisory committee for NCAA tournament selection. In 2003, Burdick was selected to coach in the Division I Men’s Lacrosse North/South All-Star game. Burdick is the director and owner of the Friar Lacrosse Camp network which runs camps and clinics nationwide. The Friar Elite Camp, held at Providence Col-lege, is the leading venue for future Friar lacrosse student-athletes, with over 75 percent of the current roster having attended. The network includes the PLASMA local HS Club organization, an underclass venue, the Future Chip Showcase, as well as teaching camps and clinics in Providence, R.I., Buffalo, N.Y. and Portland, Ore. Go to www.friarlacrossecamps.com for more information. A native of Cortland, N.Y., he is the son of Angela and Frank Burdick.

Coach Burdick on college athletics:“To me, the purpose of collegiate athletics is to provide an opportunity for growth on the professional side of the student-athlete’s life. Through their involvement in the lacrosse program at Providence College, student-athletes will develop a set of skills that will promote a successful transition to their professional environments following graduation. Building and maintaining relationships, self motivation, discipline, teamwork and integrity are all components of what we strive to develop in an effort to build a well-rounded experience for the student-athlete. The challenge of a Division I program creates countless opportunities for students to learn to overcome adversity, which is a key component to leading a happy and successful life.”

Coach Burdick on coaching and lacrosse philosophy:“Coaching is creating an opportunity for an individual to act. With that being said, I don’t have a philosophy of how lacrosse should be played. A coach should implement the style or game plan that gives his team the best opportunity to win the game. The key is preparation - which is built from an efficient practice program. At times the game will call for you to play fast (from behind) or slow (with a late lead). It is the coach who must prepare the team for every situation they could encounter during the contest.”

Coach Burdick on the Championship Model:“The word 'team' can easily be replaced with relationship. It is the relationships that individuals develop that create an opportunity for the team to operate at the highest - or championship level. We teach that there are three levels of team/relationship; upset, everything’s fine, and the championship level. When a team is at the championship level, everything that happens on the team is each individual’s responsibility. This creates leadership opportunities for all players, freshmen through seniors. The championship model teaches teammates how to have open and honest relationships with each other and the coaching staff, and encourages individuals on the team to request what they need to be successful - keeping them productive in the face of adversity. A key component to our success, the Friars made three NCAA tournaments in the four years since the model’s introduction to the organization.”

Keith Loftis begins his 12th season as an assistant coach with the Providence College men's lacrosse program. Loftis joined the Friar lacrosse team in 2000 and spent two seasons as a volunteer coach under the direc-tion of Head Coach Chris Burdick. In 2002, Loftis was elevated to first assistant, and will continue to serve in that capacity for a 10th season in 2011. He is the Friars' recruiting coordinator.

Loftis attended Corning Community College for one year and went on to complete his associates degree in liberal arts at Morrisville State University in 1995. He played lacrosse at Corning and Morrisville and earned All-Region honors each year. At the conclusion of the 1995 sea-son at Morrisville, Loftis was selected to participate in the Junior College North/South All-Star Game.

Loftis enrolled at Potsdam State University, where he completed a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1997. Loftis also was a member of the lacrosse team at Potsdam.

Loftis served as the Head Coach of the men's lacrosse program at Cobleskill State University for two seasons (1998-99). During that time, he also was employed as the Interim Director of Recreation and Intramurals.

Loftis has served as a member of the board for Rhode Island La-crosse.

A native of Whitesboro, N.Y., Loftis earned a master's degree in education/counseling from Providence College in 2001. He and his wife, Elisangela, currently reside in Providence, R.I. The couple welcomed a son, Thomas, on March 8, 2011.

JM Simpson is in his first year as an assistant coach with the Provi-dence College lacrosse team. He was named to the position on June 24, 2010, after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at St. Mary's College in Maryland.

While at St. Mary's, Simpson worked with Head Coach Chris Hasb-rouck. He was involved in all aspects of recruiting and day-to-day operations of the men's lacrosse program. He was instrumental in coordinating the defensive playbook and goaltender instruction. Simpson also managed the substitution box during games.

Prior to his tenure at St. Mary's, Simpson spent three seasons at Marist College. He began his time with the Red Foxes as an assistant coach under the direction of Head Coach Andy Copelan in the fall of 2005. Simpson was elevated to head coach in December of 2005 upon Copelan's depar-ture for Maryland. Simpson directed Marist during the 2006, 2007 and 2008 campaigns as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). During his time at Marist, Simpson was responsible for the daily operations of the program. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2006 and made the transition to defensive coordinator for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Simpson was instrumental in the recruitment of MAAC Rookie of the Year Matt Teichmann and MAAC scoring leader Corey Zindel. He also played a significant role in fund-raising efforts.

Simpson's coaching career began at his alma mater, Division III national power-house Salisbury University, where he served as assistant coach for one season (2005). Working with Head Coach Jim Berkman, Simpson was involved in all aspects of game and practice preparation, as well as individual player workouts. As an assistant coach, he helped guide Salisbury to the NCAA Division III National Title.

During Simpson's playing career at Salisbury, he helped his team capture the 2003 and 2004 NCAA National Championship and won four-straight Capital Athletic Conference Championships. Salisbury recorded a 68-8 overall record during Simpson's four-year career (2001-04). Simpson was a team captain in 2004 during Salisbury's run to the national cham-pionship.

Simpson resides in Pawtucket, R.I..

Keith Loftis on coaching philosophy:"Work ethic, discipline and the ability to make decisions that are in line with your goals – these are key ingredients for the success of any individual or team. Games are won or lost before a team ever steps onto the playing field. A team that consistently practices well will play well on gameday. I’d rather have a less talented team that knows how to compete and work hard in practice, over a team that has talent but no drive to prepare at a high level."

Keith Loftis on recruiting at Providence College:"To know Providence College is to love it. I’ve yet to meet an Alumnus who has not had a great experience as a student at Providence. A great education in a small school setting, a big-time athletics atmosphere, winning conference championships and playing in the NCAA tournament - Friar Lacrosse offers all of this to a high school lacrosse player as he considers where to continue his athletic and academic career. "

MeeT THe sTaFF

JM Simpson on coaching philosophy:"Hard work pays off! It sounds simple and seems easy to recognize, but it's amazing how fulfilling hard work really is. Many young men in college athletics are extremely talented when they walk onto a campus of their choosing, but it's the work they put in once they're there that will set them apart from the rest. How hard student-athletes train, their preparation and willingness to compete is what makes the NCAA the most exciting and unique combination in all of athletics. All-Americans are not born, they're made."

JM Simpson on recruiting at Providence College:"My main objective in recruiting is to identify the young men that have a passion for the game, are willing to learn and compete on every play. I'm looking for the student-athlete that is extremely passionate about the game of lacrosse and understands the importance of an education. I want individuals of the highest character to represent Providence College and the lacrosse organization on a daily basis. There is a golden opportunity for student-athletes to play in the best league in college lacrosse, the BIG EAST, and receive an excellent education here at Providence College!"

Jim Mascia returns to his alma mater for a 10th season on the side-lines at Providence College after an outstanding career with the Friars from 1994-98. Mascia is the all-time leader at Providence with 256 career groundballs. He registered an all-time season high of 138 groundballs during his final campaign with the "black and white" in 1998.

Mascia was a four-year starter and defensive midfielder during his play-ing days as a Friar. In his junior and senior seasons, he served as the team's face-off specialist. As senior captain and two-time All-MAAC Academic Team selection, Mascia finished first in face-offs won per game, groundballs per game and total groundballs recorded in NCAA Division I. He also finished among the top-10 in all other significant face-off statistics.

One of Mascia's primary responsibilities as an assistant is to work with the Friars' face-off specialists. He also assists with the offensive units.

A native of Parsippany, N.J., Mascia graduated from Providence cum laude in 1998 as a Dean's List student. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in english writing.

The Friars were coming off a 7-1 record in the MAAC in 2003 and returned a number of key players to set up a run to the conference title. The 2004 squad packed a powerful offensive-defensive punch, with MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Brian O'Rorke anchoring the fifth-ranked PC defense, and First Team All-MAAC selection Dan Giuntini posting 35 points, including 29 goals, to lead the Friar attack. After dropping the first two games of the season, Providence won three of its next four, including a dominating 15-1 triumph at MAAC rival Siena. That win began a streak of three-consecutive league victories, as PC also knocked off Saint Joseph's and Wagner to improve to 4-1 in MAAC play. After a 7-4 setback to Marist, PC earned home wins over VMI and Manhattan to enter the league tournament in Buffalo with a 6-2 record and a No. 3 seed. The Friars opened the tournament with an upset of No. 2-seed Canisius, 10-8, and wrapped up its first MAAC Tournament Championship with an 11-6 title game victory over the Manhattan Jaspers. Mark Rotella earned MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Player honors after winning 14-of-20 faceoffs in the title game and 15-of-22 in the semifinal against Canisius. The conference title earned the Friars the program's

first NCAA Tournament berth in the 25-year history of the team and began the run of three NCAA Tournament appearances over a four-year span. PC fell to No. 1-overall seed Johns Hopkins in the first round of the tournament in Baltimore, Md. to finish the season.

After an 8-8 season in 2005, bolstered by a 7-1 record in MAAC play, the Friars were ready to make another run at the MAAC Tournament title in 2006. PC was anchored once again by a strong defense that allowed only 8.5 goals per game on the season. Junior goaltender Peter Littell led the superb Friar defense, as the Upper Montclair, N.J. native ranked ninth in the nation with a .589 save percentage and 14th with a 7.82 goals against average. PC also featured one of its best offensive teams of the decade, paced by the program's first-ever All-American, Michael Farley. Farley led the Friars with 44 points and ranked 26th in the nation in goals per game. Providence excelled in crunch time throughout the season, as the Friars were a perfect 4-0 in overtime games on the year, including an 11-10 extra-session win in the MAAC semifinals against Marist. After two competitive setbacks to Ivy League foes Dartmouth and Yale to open the season, the Friars rattled off two-straight MAAC wins with victo-ries over Saint Joseph's and Wagner. The Friars dropped a close 12-11 contest to Canisius next, before earning an impressive 11-10, overtime victory against Fairfield. PC then defeated Siena, 8-7, in two overtimes to improve to 3-1 in the conference. After a 11-7 setback to VMI, Providence finished the confer-ence season with three-consecutive victories, including a 9-6 win at Marist. PC entered the MAAC Tournament in Buffalo with a 6-2 league record and earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament for the second time in school his-tory. Bolstered by the 11-10, semifinal win against Marist, the Friars knocked off Mt. St. Mary's, 8-6, to claim their second MAAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in three seasons. Graduate student Jonathan Hollister earned Most Outstanding Player honors after recording eight points over the two tournament contests. The Friars advanced to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 14 seed and faced No. 3 Hofstra on Long Island. The Friars played a competitive game, but fell, 14-8, to the Pride.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SEASONS

2004 - 9-8 Overall Record, 6-2 MAAC

2006 - 10-7 Overall Record, 6-2 MAAC

2007 - 7-10 Overall Record, 5-3 MAAC The 2007 Providence College men's lacrosse team was one of the most determined, and certainly one of the toughest squads in the Chris Burdick era at PC. After a difficult 0-8 start to the season, the team could have eas-ily lost its focus and ended the season the way it began. Instead, this team executed one of the greatest turnarounds in Providence College Athlet-ics history. The Friars rebounded from 0-8 to win their final four MAAC games and sneak into the league tournament in Emmitsburg, Md. as the No. 4 seed. From there, the Friars upset top-seeded Canisius, 9-7, and went on to defeat Saint Joseph's, 9-4, in the tournament final to complete the Cinderella run and earn a third NCAA Tournament in four seasons. PC was bolstered all-season long by a defense that ranked 11th nationally and featured one of the best defenders in school history in James Courter. The current Friar assistant coach earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2007 and stepped up when it mattered most, garnering MAAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player accolades. Goalkeeper Peter Littell had one of his best seasons in the cage as a senior, earning First Team All-MAAC honors after ranking in the top-20 in the country in goals against average and save percentage.

Big easT conFerence

The 2010-11 academic year will be the 32nd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2010-11 year will mark the conference's

sixth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation's largest Division I-A conference.

The BIG EAST Conference's goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league's proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2009-10 year was no different.

Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Maya Moore, Connecticut's women's basketball stand-out, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Award as the nation's top female student-athlete. She also was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women's basketball. Moore was the fifth BIG EAST women's student-athlete to win the Honda-Broderick Award.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut women's basketball team won its second straight national championship and its seventh overall crown. The Villanova women's cross country team also won the NCAA title. The Notre Dame women's soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup for the sec-ond straight year. The Syracuse women's lacrosse squad reached the Final Four.

On the men's side, West Virginia's basketball team became the BIG EAST's 16th team to reach the NCAA Final Four and won the confer-ence's academic achievement award. The Notre Dame men's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA championship game.

Individually, three BIG EAST student-athletes won NCAA titles. Cin-cinnati's Josh Schneider won the 50 freestyle in men's swimming. In track, Louisville's D'Ana McCarty repeated as the NCAA indoor winner in the weight throw. Louisville's Matt Hughes won the 3,000 steeplechase. Another Cardinal, Austen Childs, was the national runner-up in men's tennis singles.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Cincinnati won its second straight league championship in 2009 and compiled an undefeated regular season. The Bearcats finished third in the final Bowl Championship Series standings. Six of the league's eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record. Rutgers, one of the bowl winners, also was recognized for having the nation's highest NCAA APR rating, which measures academic success.

The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who are at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2009-10, 22 BIG EAST players from 10 schools were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams. Over 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors.

The BIG EAST became the nation's largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation's top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its new-est members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 28 national cham-pionships in six different sports and 128 student-athletes have won individual national titles.

In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men's and women's NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In 2002-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men's and women's titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national champion-ships. In men's basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 12 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women's teams have taken seven of the last 11 NCAA titles.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into op-portunities to become stronger.

In 2009-10, the BIG EAST added men's lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which increased its total to 24 sport championships.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John's, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College com-pleted the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have out-standing leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference's first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league's first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference.

In 2009-10, the BIG EAST had one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner's chair and continued to steer the conference on its path of success.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The confer-ence has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men's basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men's BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women's basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past seven years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

More than 575 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the confer-ence administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE

Providence College is a primarily undergraduate, liberal arts, Catholic institution of higher education. Committed to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humani-ties, the College provides a variety of opportunities for intellectual, social, moral and spiritual growth in a supportive environment.

The College actively cultivates intellectual, spiritual, ethical and aesthetic values within the context of the Judaeo-Christian heritage. These values are nurtured by the unique tradition of the Dominican Order which emphasizes quality teaching and scholarship.

Providence College recognizes the unity of the human family that proceeds from its one Creator. It therefore encourages the deepest respect for the essential dignity, freedom and equality of every person and welcomes qualified women and men from all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Providence College prepares its students to be responsible and produc-tive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.

THIS IS PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College — the only institution of higher learning in North America that is conducted by the Order. In 93 years, Providence

College has steadily moved to a position of national prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population. Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to 1216, or the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain. Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spreading the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, to teach at every level of the United States educational system. With the Dominican tradition as its foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented education. The college seeks to complement a student’s knowledge with knowledge of his own values — values that will remain the foundation for sound judgement throughout a lifetime. To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, offering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Students may choose from some 60 concentrations ranging from computer science to labor relations to theatre arts. In addition, qualified students who wish to structure a program not specifically provided under the regular concentrations may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college. As part of the core curriculum, all students take a two-year, team-taught course, Development of Western Civilization (DWC) which integrates the study of literature, philosophy, history and religious studies through the ages into a cohesive interdisciplinary unit. Situated just on the fringe of downtown Providence, the College’s location enables students to have easy access to the many social, cultural, educational and recreational amenities of urban life - the Providence Public Library; entertainment at the Providence Performing Arts Center; sporting events, entertainment and trade shows at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and the Providence Convention Center and dozens of fine restaurants. With several other major educational institutions located in Providence, the city has become a hub of collegiate activity.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT

ROBERT G. DRISCOLL, JR.ATHLETICS DIRECTOR REVEREND

BRIAN J. SHANLEY, O.P. PRESIDENT

On February 1, 2005, Providence College announced the election of Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P., to serve as the 12th president of the College. Prior to his arrival at Provi-dence, Father Shanley served as an associate professor in the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America in Washing-ton, D.C.

Father Shanley is a native of Warwick, Rhode Island. A parishioner at St. Gregory the Great Church, he attended local public

schools, graduating from Toll Gate High School in 1976.In 1980, Father Shanley earned his undergraduate degree in history at

Providence College. He holds a doctorate degree in philosophy from the University of Toronto, where he completed the Collaborative Providence in Philosophy and Medieval Studies. He also holds a master of divinity degree (theology) and the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.), both from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. (Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception.)

Ordained to the priesthood in 1987, Father Shanley has devoted his entire career to teaching and administration in Catholic higher education. Following teaching assignments at Providence College and the University of Toronto, he began his tenure at The Catholic University of America in 1994, achieving the rank of associate professor in 2001. Father Shanley’s first teaching assignment was at Providence College from 1988-91. He was an instructor of philosophy, and taught in the Development of Western Civilization Program.

Father Shanley spent the Fall 2002 semester as a visiting professor at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He previously engaged in a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Philosophy of Religion in 1998-99.

As the Regent of Studies for the Dominican Province of St. Joseph, Father Shanley holds a seat on the Provincial Council, a body of 12 Dominican Fri-ars serving as cabinet-level advisors to the Prior Provincial. He advises the Prior Provincial on all matters pertaining to the intellectual and academic life of the Province and oversees the academic endeavors of members of the Province, including those in preparation for the priesthood and those engaged in graduate studies.

Since Robert G. Driscoll was hired as the As-sociate Vice President for Athletics on November 2, 2001, Providence College athletics has experienced unprecedented growth in academic and athletic performance, fundraising, facilities and community involvement. Driscoll has reinvigorated the Provi-dence College Athletics program, leading the charge with a vision of creating one of the most respected programs in the nation, where each student-athlete graduates and has the opportunity to compete for championships. Driscoll was recognized for his efforts on June 10, 2008 as he was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year

for Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Direc-tors of Athletics Annual Convention. He also was honored in 2009 by his alma mater, Ithaca College, where he received the Distinguished Sport Industry Leader award dur-ing alumni weekend. Most recently, he was elected as treasurer of the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association.

Providence College athletics experienced success in 2009-10. Part of Driscoll’s vision is to achieve a 100-percent graduation rate. In the most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate data, Providence student-athletes graduated at a 93-percent rate, which was one of the highest rankings in the country for a Division I program.

Athletically, Providence finished seventh out of 95 Division I-AAA schools in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. The men’s and women’s cross country teams advanced to the NCAA Championships and the indoor and outdoor track teams participated in the BIG EAST Championships. The men’s soccer and field hockey teams advanced to the BIG EAST Championship semifinals, while the softball squad earned a berth in the BIG EAST quarterfinals. The women’s hockey team captured the Hockey East regular season crown for the third time and earned the right to host the league tournament at Schneider Arena. The women’s basketball team enjoyed its most successful season since 1991-92 as it posted 19 wins and made it all the way to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) quarterfinals.

There also have been numerous facility improvements. The men’s soccer program received a generous donation from John Murphy ‘80 and renovated the soccer offices. The Joyce Murphy Soccer Suite opened in November of 2008. The suite features new offices, meeting spaces and a lounge area equipped with flat screen televisions. In addition, the men’s soccer locker room also was refurbished thanks to a donation by Kerry and Karl Anderson ‘87. With the creation of the BIG EAST Lacrosse Conference, the lacrosse offices were renovated to go along with a new locker room. The volleyball locker room also was renovated and a new women’s bas-ketball video room was created. Furthermore, the track/cross country offices and the women’s soccer offices also were refurbished. The Helen Bert Student-Athlete Study Lounge, which was opened in 2007, was recently expanded. Thanks to a generous do-nation from Judge Bill Leary ’60 and his wife, Emily, the Friends of Friar Hockey Room also was renovated at Schneider Arena and the Bob O’Connor ’62 media library was opened.

In August of 2007, the Concannon Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art $18 million facility, was opened. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the $6 million Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, which was completed in August 2005. The Fitness Center houses the Friars’ Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center as well as administrative and coaching offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. The construction project also provides the department with a state-of-the-art sports medicine complex and a new ticket office. The Canavan Sports Medicine Center, which was completed in August of 2008, is equipped with a hydrotherapy room, which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy.

Many of the College’s athletic improvements were made possible through Driscoll's fundraising efforts. In each of the eight years that Driscoll has led the Friars, the athletic department has exceeded its fundraising goals and has generated millions of dollars that have been utilized for student-athlete development and facility enhancements.

Driscoll is currently a member of the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship Committee and will serve as the Committee Chair in 2010-11. He also represents the BIG EAST’s Athletic Directors on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, serves on the BIG EAST Finance Committee and the HOCKEY EAST Television Negotiations Committee. He previously served on the NCAA Division I Management Council and was an NCAA Fellows Programs Executive Mentor.

Driscoll joined the Providence community after 14½ years in athletic administration at the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal, Driscoll served as the Execu-tive Associate Athletic Director and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department as well as overseeing football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s swim-ming, men’s and women’s water polo, rugby, strength training, equipment and the sports medicine programs.

Driscoll was hired at Cal as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, a position he held for five years. He then assumed the position of Executive As-sociate Athletic Director, at which point he was responsible for the administration of 27 varsity sports. During his tenure at Cal, he oversaw 25 club sports, a staff of 250 and a $36 million budget. Prior to coming to Providence, he served as the Acting Executive Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. During his tenure, Cal won over 20 national championships, competed in the Citrus, Copper, Alamo and Aloha Bowls, NCAA Basketball Tournaments and the College World Series for baseball and softball. The Bears also finished as high as 12th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup.

Before arriving at Cal, Driscoll served six years (1981-87) as the Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Intramu-ral Sports at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Prior to arriving at Mills, Driscoll was Assistant Athletic Director and Head Baseball and Hockey Coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. from 1977-81. Driscoll was a stand-out hockey and baseball player at Ithaca College (N.Y.), where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical educa-tion in 1974. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education/Psychology of Sports from Ithaca in 1975.

A native of West Concord, Mass., Driscoll was inducted into the inaugural class of Concord-Carlisle High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame (football, ice hockey and baseball) in 1993. He is the proud father of three children: Tara, Kelly, and Sean, a graduate of Providence College. He and his wife Cathy reside in North Kingstown.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SERVICES

The Office of Academic Services (OAS) provides specialized support to student-athletes in light of the unique time demands, responsibilities, and rules governing participation in intercollegiate athletics. Holistic services are provided in a safe, personal environment where academic growth is a priority, personal development and independence are enhanced, and long-term success is nurtured by a staff which models these same commitments.

Student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom as well as on the field or court, may be nominated for the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team, the HOCKEY EAST Academic Honor Roll, NFHCA Division I Academic Team or ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Program presented by CoSIDA. The Providence College Athletic Department also honors student-athletes each semester who have achieved a 3.00 grade point average or higher.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Providence College is primarily a coeducational four-year undergraduate college of liberal arts and sciences. Its main objective is the intellectual development of its students through the disciplines of the sciences and the humanities, equipping them to become productive and responsible citizens of a democratic society.

To be eligible for a degree, a student must accumulate 116 credit hours over an eight semester period with an overall quality point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. In addition, a student must complete a minimum of 24 upper-division credits in the field of their major with an overall 2.0 cumulative average unless stipulated. Included in the total credit hours are the following prerequisites for any degree: Development of Western Civilization (20); Social Sciences (6); Natural Science (6); Philosophy (6); Theology (6); Mathematics (3) and Fine Arts (3). The remaining credit hours are elective with at least nine coming from areas outside one’s major. In addition, all students establish English (writing) Proficiency by coursework or standards designated by the English Department.

The most popular majors for the Class of 2010 were Marketing, English, Finance, Biology and Elementary/Secondary Education.

Although this may seem overwhelming on paper, our staff goes to great lengths to monitor each student’s academic progress. It’s a system that Providence is quite proud of and one which we’ve worked long and hard to establish.

Any student-athlete who feels the need for tutorial assistance can utilize the college’s tutorial center, as well as the athletic department’s advisors who can supply them with individuals capable of assisting them in their particular course of study.
