Tier 3Tier 3 is based on the average actual cost for your campers to participate in a camp session. By paying the top tier price, you are offering additional support to help improve our resident camp pro-gramming and helping to fund our resident camp financial assistance program.

Tier 2Tier 2 is partially subsidized (ap-proximately 23%) by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana .This tier is for families who cannot afford the full fee but still want to contribute a little extra support.

THREE-TIER PRICING SYSTEMOverview: Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana serves a wide range of families with different financial abilities. Resident camp is such a vital part of a child’s growth and development that we want to make it as affordable as possible. For that reason, a voluntary Three-Tier pricing system is being implemented for the 2011 registration fees. This system will work on a voluntary honor system and the fee you pay for each camp session will in no way influence the experience your camper will receive.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THREE- TIER PRICING?

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana subsidizes our summer camp fees and facility expenses year round. GSK subsi-dizes the summer camp fee about 43% in order to ensure that we keep our programs affordable. In addition to programming fees, we have many other expenses that help contribute to your camper’s experience. Things

Three Tier Pricing

such as property, supplies, and professional costs increase in price each year, and although these are un-avoidable expenses, we still want to ensure that all campers are able to afford our programming. Offering a Three-Tier Pricing system allows us to keep resident camp fees as low as possible, while still maintaining the highest program standards. We realize that all families have different financial situations, and would

4

Tier 1Tier 1 is based on the lowest subsidized fee. Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana has reduced the camp fee by about 43%! If you are still unable to pay Tier 1, financial assistance is available.

like to invite those with the ability and desire to pay our higher tiered prices. Our three-tier system is COMPLETELY voluntary and strictly based on the honor system. If you are still unable to pay “Tier 1,” financial assistance is available based on financial need. Funds are limited. Please fill out the financial assistance form on page 24.

Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is located on Girl Scout Bay on sce-nic Kentucky Lake, 45 minutes south of Paducah, KY. Our 183 acres of waterfront property and two miles of shoreline create a perfect setting for Kentucky’s only aquatic Girl Scout camp. The camp is just a boat ride away from Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a popular destination for overnight trips. Bear Creek’s bay has a large boating area with two docks and a roped-off swimming area with a water slide. There is a large meadow for field games, a central shower house with private stalls, and a lodge that houses the dining hall, kitchen, and health center.

Living UnitsBear Creek has three units of cabins named Hickory Hollow, Lion’s Den, and Coke Top. The cabins are open-air and rustic. We also have one unit of platform tents called Cardinal Hill. Bay View is a hammock unit where our most experienced campers stay. All platform tents have army-style cots. All cabins have cots with mattresses. Usually four to six girls share a tent or cabin. Most of the time, girls choose their own cabin or tent mates. Two to five counselors live in a central tent or cabin. Counselors do not sleep in the same shel-ter as campers.

MealsMeals at Bear Creek follow special traditions. Before the meal, a unit will “hop” (set) the tables. We serve all our meals family style. When the meal has been finished, we wash our own dishes in “beaver buckets” before we put them in the sanitizer. The best part is that we sing the whole time!

CampfiresThe first and last nights of every session are marked by campfires at Inspiration Point, and they are attended by the whole camp. Units present skits or songs and share their fa-vorite camp memories.

We’re “Rustic”Campers stay in our rustic cabins or platform tents. There is no electricity or electric lighting in the tents or cabins. Each unit has a central security light that stays on all night. There are latrines in each unit, as well as a basin with running water. There are flush toilets in the lodge, Hickory Hollow, Cardinal Hill, Coke Top, and Lion’s Den. The shower house is in the main camp area. Campers do not have access to the phone, but the Camp Director will call if your daughter has a problem, is sick, or if there is an emergency at the camp.

ScheduleEach day includes time for your unit’s special program activi-ties, such as boating lessons or trips. Your daily schedule will also include time for camp Kapers, which are a fun way to share in the responsibilities of living in a camp community. Units take turns setting the tables for meals, leading songs, and cleaning the lodge, shower, and grounds! Your daily schedule takes into account what you and the other girls in your unit want to do at camp!

Smooth Sailing Mariners (Bear Creek, Entering grades 9-12): This is the capstone program for sailors at Bear Creek Aquatic Camp. Spend the first part of the week brushing up on your sailing skills. Then start work-ing on advanced skills that will help you on your journey across the lake. Once you’re sailing like a pro, you’ll study the weather and navigational charts of Kentucky Lake to plan your own amazing, challenging, overnight sailing trip.

ment and adventure... but this session really isn’t for the faint of heart!!! See what it takes to climb the rocks at Giant City State Park, and then stick around for some serious backpacking and camping out. One day you might head to Camp Pennyroyal to experience the high ropes course, and then spend some time at camp planning your sea kayaking survival adventure. Take only what your boat can hold and head to Land Between the Lakes for a sweet overnight adventure. Once you arrive there, spend the afternoon learning the ins and outs of hard-core birdwatching by learning the proper use of scopes and binoculars. End the session on a high note by enjoying a traditional Bear Creek closing campfire!

friends? At Camp Pennyroyal you will get soaked while you set out on your own white water rafting adventure! Then move on to take Mammoth Cave National Park by storm! Spend your day backpacking around the park, experiencing some of the park’s wild caves! Sleep out under the stars, learn how to use a camp stove, and build your own shelter. The next day get to experience one of Kentucky’s newest thrills- Mammoth Cave Adventure’s zipline tour! Then head back to camp to end the session in style with our traditional closing campfire!

Counselor in Training (Camp Pennyroyal and Bear Creek, Entering grades 11-12) :CIT is made up of two sessions: Pennyroyal June 27-July 2, and Bear Creek July 5-July 10. Campers will return home be-tween sessions. The purpose of the program is to provide participants with training in how to use effective lead-ership skills throughout their lives and how to work effectively with children at camp and in many other settings. During this two-session program, you will put your skills into practice by leading younger campers in daily activities. The leadership skills you will learn can be used in all parts of life. Please note: Even if a camper completes the CIT program successfully, it does not necessarily mean that she will be hired for a camp position in the future. Camp-ers should apply for the CIT program because they have a genuine interest in building leadership skills and working with children, and not because they are seeking a specific camp position in the future.

Pre-Counselor in Training (Previously LITE, Camp Pen-nyroyal, Entering Grades 8-10): The PCIT program is per-fect for older campers who would like to develop and practice their leadership and team-building skills. PCITs will learn the importance of self confidence as they find themselves taking on more and more leadership at camp! Participate in leadership sessions, work through challenges together as a team, and learn how many differ-ent ways there are to lead. With the other PCITs, you will learn about your own leadership style and what that means to your future in leadership! Participation in the PCIT program is not a pre-requisite for attending other Counselor in Training programs.

16

Advanced Counselor in Training (Camp Pennyroyal and Bear Creek, Entering

grade 12) ACIT is made up of two sessions, Bear Creek July 17-23, and Pennyroyal July 24-29. Camp-ers will return home between sessions. This session is the last and final step before taking the leap from camper to counselor. Girls in the program will spend the majority of their time working with younger campers, but, will also continue to develop lead-ership skills. Girls who are interested will need to send in a registration form to get the full application. Applying for the program doesn’t guarantee place-ment, and placement in the program doesn’t guarantee she will be hired for a camp position in the future.

Registering with a BuddyGirls who want to be registered as buddies in the same unit must list this on their registration form. To become listed as buddies, BOTH campers must note this on their registration form. Buddy placement is not guaranteed.

Multiple SessionsThere is no limit to the number of sessions each girl may attend (fi-nancial assistance will be available for only one session). A separate registration form is required for each registration.

Refund PolicyThe camp fee, less the $25 regis-tration payment, will be refunded only if one or more of the following circumstances apply: the family has moved out of the area, there is a doctor’s statement, there has been a family emergency, or the camper is sent home early from camp due to illness. These refunds are pro-rated. No refund will be issued if a camper is sent home due to unacceptable behavior (see Code of Conduct in the camper packet), homesickness, head lice, or if the camper is a “no show” for the program.

Three-Tier Pricing SystemGirl Scouts of Kentuckiana is com-mitted to providing high-quality and affordable outdoor program-ming for girls. The Tier 1 price paid by families covers only 57% of the actual cost. Girl Scouts of Ken-tuckiana covers the remaining 43% of the cost. We have adjusted our payment system in order to ensure that every girl who wants to attend resident camp has the opportunity.

Send Application EarlyRegistration begins on February 1st, 2011. Registration forms will be pro-cessed in the order in which they are received. In order to hold your camp-er’s space, send a $25 registration payment with all registration forms. The $25 registration payment that you submit with your appli-cation is part of your registration fee and is not an additional fee. For programs that have more regis-trations than spaces, a draw will be done for placement in this program. If we are unable to place your camp-er, the $25 registration payment will be refunded. Given that our council covers such a broad mailing area, we have found this method is the fairest process for the girls. Camp confirma-tions will be mailed or emailed.

Waiting ListsAfter a program is filled to capacity, a waiting list is started. If a girl is placed on a waiting list, she will be notified by telephone, email, or postal mail.

Discounts and SpecialsGirl Scouts of Kentuckiana will be offering two opportunities for discounts during the 2011 registra-tion season. From the beginning of registration season until Febru-ary 15th, 2011, a 25% discount will be applied to any tier you register under. After that, no discounts will be offered until the end of the season. We cannot guarantee spaces will be available OR that the discount will be as much at that time. Please contact Amy Rehs, Camp Administrator, at 1.888.771.5170 ext 23400 for more information.

After RegistrationOnce your camper is placed in a program, a Confirmation Notice with payment information will be mailed or emailed to you. The $25 registration payment that was submitted with your application is part of your registration fee and is not an additional fee. Your confirmation letter will let you know when your next payment is due. Pay-ments can be made in two additional installments. If these installments do not work for your financial situation, please contact the Camp Registrar to set up additional payments. All sum-mer camp fees must be paid in full by April 1st. The only exception for this would be if you are using Cookie Dough. Please contact the Camp Registrar with this information, and a note will be made to your account. Failure to pay will result in the remov-al of your camper from that program until payment is made. A camper packet will be mailed or emailed in the spring with information on arrival and departure, packing list, health card, bus information, directions to camp, etc. If there is a problem with your registration, you will be notified by a phone call, mail, or email.

It cannot be used to purchase goods at the camp Trading Post. Cookie Dough cannot be submitted for a cash refund.

Canoe Be a Leader ChallengeThe “Canoe Be a Leader Challenge” was designed to exchange volunteer hours for money to go to camp. For every hour of service that you pro-vide to your community, we will give you a dollar for your summer camp experience. You can earn up to $150 towards your summer camp fees. To enroll in this program, you will need to fill out a “Canoe Be a Leader?” registration form and someone will contact you about this opportunity to earn Camp Cash. Camp Cash has no monetary value and can only be used for Resident Camp fees. Please contact Christy Dupin at [email protected] or 1.888.771.5170 ext 23100.

Financial Assistance: Requirements and Deadlines Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is com-mitted to providing a positive experi-ence to every girl who wants to be a Girl Scout. Financial Assistance is provided so that a family’s eco-nomic status will not be a barrier to participation. Financial Assistance will be provided as determined by the council’s budgetary resources and will be based on financial need. You must be a registered Girl Scout in order to receive Financial Assis-tance. Girls who are registered as Girl Scouts before December 31, 2010, will receive first priority for Financial Assistance. You must submit a Fi-nancial Assistance Request Form in order to be considered for Financial Assistance.

Applying for Financial AssistanceFinancial Assistance funds are limited. Financial Assistance is determined based on need. To apply, use a separate Financial Assistance Request for each girl. Complete all sections of the Finan-cial Assistance Request on page 24. Par-ent/Guardian must fill out the Financial Assistance Request in order for the request to be reviewed. Financial Assis-tance Requests are due with camp reg-istration (see registration deadlines and tips on page 19). You will receive con-firmation information by mail or email. Please call the Camp Administrator at the council office if you have questions or special circumstances to discuss (1-888-771-5170 ext 23400). All financial information is kept strictly confidential. Financial Assistance is available for one camp session per girl. Camper must be a registered Girl Scout in order to receive financial assistance.

Buses will be offered for all sessions except: Day Camp, Troop Adventure Camp,Penny Role Model and Family Camp.

Allergies, Food, and Special RequirementsIt is very important that we are aware of any special needs, requirements, or allergies BEFORE your camper ar-rives at camp. Please list any severe allergies on your registration form. This will not affect your camp-er’s placement. It is meant only to help better serve your child’s specific needs. Our camps provide well-balanced meals prepared by an experienced cooking staff. If you have questions about your camper’s dietary needs, please contact the Camp Director.

Physical Exam & HealthcarePrior to camp, all campers are re-quired to have a health exam per-formed by a licensed medical profes-sional. The health exam must have been performed within the last 24 months prior to their arrival at camp. The Health Packet we’ll send in your confirmation packet must be signed by a physician or nurse practitioner (who is licensed by the state) prior to your camp session. If you had a physical exam last year for camp, you may use that form again, but you MUST make a copy as we will be un-able to recover that for you. A health history packet will be mailed to you in your Camper Packet. Additional health forms are available on the web at www.kyanags.org. These health histories enable us to provide girls with informed care while they are at camp. Please make a COPY of the signed health form before taking it to camp and keep it for your records. The on-site Health Supervisor will oversee the distribution of medica-tions and supervise camp health care and sanitation. In addition, most staff members at both camps are certified in First Aid and CPR. Both camps are supported by the on-call services of a physician and emer-gency medical services.

Both camps meet state health codes and strict Girl Scout safety guide-lines, as well as standards of the American Camp Association and the American Red Cross. Campers do not have access to the phone, but you will be contacted if sickness or injury requires a visit to a doctor, or for any other issue, such as severe homesickness, injury, or illness that prevents your child from taking part in camp program activities. If you have specific concerns about your daughter’s well-being and/or behav-ior at camp, you may contact the Camp Director. Please see the health card for more information and for the opportunity to specify any ad-ditional instances in which you may want a phone call from camp.

Camp StaffOur staff members are mature, responsible individuals selected for their special abilities, certifications, professionalism, and experience working with children/teens camp-ing programs. All of our resident camp staff members are carefully selected, interviewed, and screened. Background checks are conducted on all staff members. All staff partici-pate in an intensive pre-camp train-ing and ongoing trainings throughout the summer on topics such as child and adolescent development, camp skills, Girl Scout programs, health-care, First Aid and CPR training ,and safety practices, and procedures. Most counselors are college stu-dents or recent college graduates with experience working in schools, childcare centers, or the recreation field. We also hire international coun-selors each summer. These staff members greatly enhance the camp community. Campers and staff all benefit from the experience of shar-ing culture and program ideas from many countries.

TransportationFrom Louisville, it is about a two-hour drive to Camp Pennyroyal and about a four-hour drive to Bear Creek. Directions to camp will be included in your camp registration confirmation packet. An environmentally-friendly alternative to driving to camp is riding the bus! The bus is convenient and lots of fun. On the way to and from camp, girls can sing songs, watch movies, and meet new friends. Our buses are air-conditioned motor coaches, leased from an estab-lished bus company with an excel-lent safety record. We provide staff members on the bus to monitor your camper and ensure that everyone is safe. Bus stops for Bear Creek are in Louisville, Elizabethtown, and Beaver Dam. Pennyroyal bus stops are in Louisville and Elizabethtown. The bus fee is NOT included in your registration fee. You must indicate on your registration form that you are interested in paying extra for the bus.
