ABOUT MS NOWABOUT MS NOWABOUT MS NOWABOUT MS NOW ABOUT MSABOUT MSABOUT MSABOUT MS Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S and 2.5 million world wide. WHY WE RIDEWHY WE RIDEWHY WE RIDEWHY WE RIDE The National MS Society, Oregon Chapter serves more than 7,200 individuals with MS and their families in Oregon and SW Washington. Each year, hundreds of supporters join together for two days, for one purpose—we ride to create a world free of MS. Your participation in Bike MS offers great help and hope. This year, with your help, our goal is to raise MS awareness, as well as over $489,000 to support vital client programs and services and the national MS research for a cure.

Life-Enhancing Programs – Chapter programs include financial assistance, self-help groups, client education, and scholarships to first year college students. Access to Quality Health Care – The Society partners with the leading health care centers for individuals with MS; and provides ongoing MS education and training for health care professionals. Information and Referral – Our highly skilled staff responds to over 5,000 requests for information and community referrals annually. We are an extensive resource center for questions about research, treatment, symptom management, coping strategies and life planning. Advocacy – The Society and its volunteers advocate for governmental and societal action to improve health care, expand societal support, increase MS research and facilitate independent living.

After listening intently to rider feedback on last year’s routes, we’ve built well-balanced rides for every level of rider. This year’s ride was created by a diverse group of last year’s riders, of varying skill levels and interests, who wanted to take the lead in developing routes that would be remembered for all the right reasons this year.

Saturday’s Base Ride Saturday’s Base Ride Saturday’s Base Ride Saturday’s Base Ride –––– 24 Miles 24 Miles 24 Miles 24 Miles Starting from Mt. Hood Community College, this route will warm you up through the neighborhood, and then catch a downhill breeze along Division before pedaling out toward Oxbow Park. After a few

rollers, we come upon a vista of Mount Hood and the Cascade Foothills

before stopping in Sandy at mile 12, for a rest stop and refreshments. By now the route has already reached the summit of

this tame ride. Catch some more rollers and flat country roads back toward Gresham. Saturday’s MidSaturday’s MidSaturday’s MidSaturday’s Mid----Range Ride Range Ride Range Ride Range Ride –––– 65 Miles 65 Miles 65 Miles 65 Miles This route will follow the Base Ride out to the Sandy rest stop, and then forge a new path toward Boring. After some fuel at rest stop #2 a lovely flat ride awaits for the next several miles. After that, a 4 mile

gradual climb from the Clackamas River up to Redland Road will be re-warded with a 6 mile descent into Oregon City, where you will find a hosted Lunch Stop at Clackamette Park. Be sure to take your last rest at Barton Park, and remember how much fun you had earlier on that first big descent. Now it’s time to pay the piper, and regain that eleva-tion with a brief but steep climb. We built this climb carefully, using last year's feedback from riders as a template for safety, and success.

Saturday’s Century Ride Saturday’s Century Ride Saturday’s Century Ride Saturday’s Century Ride –––– 100 miles 100 miles 100 miles 100 miles Follow the Mid-Range Ride out to Clackamette Park in Oregon City, Don’t forget to slow down and take in the sights of the Dr. Seuss tree farm (you’ll know it when you see it). Grab some fuel at a

rest stop near the Molalla River before the steepest climb of the day, into rural Clackamas County. For those of you who absolutely love to climb, we dedicate the next 15 miles (and 900+ feet of elevation) to

you. Your reward is descending down country roads and through farms, back into Barton Park for more fueling and to get ready for your final major climb. We hope you remember the screaming curvy descent to the Clackamas River from last year’s ride, as it is your reward again for taking on the Century Ride! With elevation being shed with nearly every turn of your wheels. Sunday’s Base Ride Sunday’s Base Ride Sunday’s Base Ride Sunday’s Base Ride –––– 35 Miles 35 Miles 35 Miles 35 Miles Remember last year’s Day 2 ride. You told us how much you liked it, so it’s back in its original form along the Sandy and Columbia rivers. Sunday’sSunday’sSunday’sSunday’s Challenge Ride Challenge Ride Challenge Ride Challenge Ride –––– 53 miles 53 miles 53 miles 53 miles For those who miss the tradition of MS 150, we’ve got a 50 mile option that takes you out through farmland to a beautiful descent down into Dodge Park on the Sandy River. Those who love some elevation with their miles will not be disappointed, as this ride climbs up notorious Ten Eyek, Bull Run, and Gordon Creek Roads before connecting with the base ride in Corbett. Follow the scenic vistas out

to Cascade Locks to round out your weekend!

SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU! SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU! SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU! SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU!

Cyclists need to possess basic bike-handling skills and safety knowledge in order to keep themselves and others around them safe, especially while participating in group cycling activities, like Bike MS. Our focus is to provide a high quality, safe and fun cycling experience. Please remember to always carry: ∫ identification ∫ emergency contact information ∫ insurance card ∫ any vital health information *Headphones (including iPods), cell phones, radios and similar radio devices are not permitted while riding. All cyclists are responsible for keeping their riding equipment in good working order, so get into the habit of checking your equipment before every ride. Small adjustments can make a significant difference in your experience. The Basics of Riding in a Group Group riding takes practice. Riding with other cyclists all around you may cause you to feel trapped. Relax. It is most important to create your own safety zone. This may vary depending on the speed and ability level of the people around you, so be flexible. Let others know of your anxiety— they may also be new. Local bike shops are a great resource for group rides.

BIKE MS:2010

Rest stop etiquette: All cyclists who enter a rest area must pull over, dismount and move completely away from the road and rest-stop entrance. When exiting, move beyond the rest area and proceed with caution on the right side of the road before merging with faster cyclists. ∫ Passing: Passing others and being passed occurs continuously during the ride. Call out “passing on your left” and allow time for the cyclist being overtaken to move to the right—then pass safely. ∫ Mechanical problems: Examine mechanical problems and change flats completely off the road. If you have a problem you cannot fix yourself, flag down a SAG van and seek a mechanic at the next rest stop. ∫ Be courteous: Bike MS participants are fortunate to ride on many trails as well as public roads. Be courteous and use no more than half the trail so as not to block the flow of other users. Hydration Knowing how to optimize your fluid intake will help you successfully complete the Bike MS Ride. ∫ One bottle per hour: The rule of thumb is to consume a bottle of liquid every hour, and that every second bottle is a sports drink. Also, remember to eat small snacks frequently during the ride. If you find that you experience extreme fatigue, the inability to recover your energy, or frequent muscle cramps, seek assistance from first aid—you may have the early signs of dehydration. ∫ Medical assistance: If you find that you experience weight gain/bloating with progressive symptoms such as swollen hands and feet, confusion, throbbing headache,

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Helmet Smart Head injuries are of special concern for cyclists. Even falling at a slow rate of speed can cause a serious head injury. Helmets must be on your head and strapped while riding in Bike MS - no exceptions. Helpful Tips On Bike MS rides, our active route support team works to make the ride safe. Here are a few additional suggestions to help keep everyone safe on the ride: ∫ Thumbs down for help: SAG vehicles and motorcycle escorts will stop for you if you are off the road, off your bike, and giving a “thumbs down” sign or holding your helmet in the air. ∫ Ride Marshal support: A special team of cyclists called Ride Marshals provide support on the rides. They offer minor mechanical help along the route and monitor cycling safety and etiquette.
