There are very few bikes that can cover distance with the combinedspeed, comfort and agility of Triumph’s Sprint ST. Everyone who hasridden it knows it lives up to its reputation: a brilliant sportsbike thattours. And the perennially popular Sprint ST has been updated for 2010and joined by a new model, the Sprint GT.

Surprisingly, for a bike that delivers the ideal balance ofperformance and flexibility, brand new sports-tourers are a rare breed intoday’s segmented motorcycle world. Pure sportsbikes have becomeincreasingly more focused and hardcore, while tourers have tended tobecome heavier or taller or both. Triumph’s Product Manager, SimonWarburton, agrees, “The Sprint GT is a genuine sports-tourer, one of veryfew available today. It’s an all-rounder that allows you to cover big distancesin comfort, but still enjoy spirited riding.” Surely that’s the dream scenariofor huge numbers of riders: tour in comfort, to the Pyrenees, or Scotland, orthe Isle of Man, or wherever you please, then enjoy the destination youtravelled for so many hours to reach when you finally arrive. It’s no goodriding from A to your once-in-a-lifetime B if the journey has left you, or yourpillion, too fatigued to really enjoy it.

Triumph’s design and development team are driven by the invaluablefeedback they receive from existing owners. The comments fromthousands of Sprint owners showed there was a great deal of love for theSprint ST, but also room in Triumph’s range for a bike with all the ST’sspirit, performance and handsome, unmistakable looks but with an evenmore practical side to it. And that was the ‘nut’ of the GT’s design brief.‘Improve the bike’s practical aspects but without losing the sportiness.’

The Sprint GT uses a 130bhp version of the world-renowned 1050cc,12-valve triple engine, a version of which also powers the Speed Tripleand Tiger. But the Sprint family use a unique aluminum beam, twin-sparframe. A glance at the specification sheet shows adjustable suspensionand lightweight 17in wheels to make the most of the widest range oftyres available. Despite family similarities to the ST, the GT is beingregarded as a brand new model. And you’ll see why. A completely newrear sub-frame, seat and rear bodywork give it different strengths andcharacter to the ST.The rider’s ergonomics are identical to the ST, withbars set at a height that allows the ‘spirited riding’ Simon described, when the conditions allow.

But the pillion seat is lower, and the pillion footpegs are both lower andfurther forward, combining to offer a more relaxed leg position. Also, therewon’t be a passenger in the world who wouldn’t want to grip thoseergonomically-shaped grab handles – after all, this engine delivers 108Nm(80ft.lbs) of torque.

The GT’s seat is easily removed with a twist of a key and revealsenough storage space for a U-lock underneath. These changes have beenable to be incorporated because the ST’s under-seat exhaust has beenreplaced by a lower-level, three-into-one system.

Clever hard panniers now come as standard equipment too.“The panniers are all new and much improved,” Simon Warburtonexplains. “They will each hold an XXL-sized helmet. They are easy tooperate and have a high quality feel. They lock with the bike’s ignition keyand come colour-coded to the bike. The mounting system is also muchimproved in that the appearance is much neater when the pannier isremoved. Instead of external rails, there are simply two discreet mountingpoints protruding through the rear bodywork. The panniers use our uniquemounting system, whereby each pannier has a small amount of freedom toswing, and is joined to the other pannier by a link bar. This system massivelyimproves the stability of the bike when loaded up by decoupling the massof the luggage from the bike. In effect, this damps out small oscillationsbefore they build up and cause a weave that is noticeable to the rider.”

THE SPRINT GT IS SET TO DOMINATE THE SPORTS-TOURER MARKET

If owners require more luggage-carrying capacity there is a matchingofficial Triumph Accessory hard top box. It can swallow a further two XXLhelmets on its own. Look, we know you won’t be carrying four huge,full-face helmets on your journeys, but try fitting a helmet in your rucksack. You’ll struggle. Now you’ve got an idea just how much luggage you canstuff into the standard panniers and accessory top box, ok?

This motorcycle has been designed by long-distance riders for long-distance riders. Simon Warburton, one of the key members of the team thatbrought the GT to life, is a long-time Sprint owner, going back to the daysof the 955i. He’s ridden all over Europe and taken part in track days onthe various Sprints he has owned, so he has his own strong views on therequirements of a 21st century sports-tourer. That’s why the GT and SThave an easily accessible 12v power socket, and the accessory top box hasanother 12v power socket for charging laptops, cameras, mobile phones orany other portable electronics while you’re on the move.

The heart of the Sprint GT, and every Triumph, is the engine. The 1050cc triple is regarded by owners and journalists as one of the all-time great engines. It has power, reliability and the ‘x factor’ so few canmanage to engineer into a powerplant, soul. And in the GT it’ll cover 200miles, quickly, between fill-ups.

Because not every journey takes place under blue skies, both Sprintsfeature new, improved headlights. The ultra-distinctive lens shape remains, but the trio of projector lights are replaced by reflector-style headlights.

“We are continually testing our existing models and we’ve developedan even better headlight,” says Simon. “The performance is muchimproved, especially on dip beam.”

The GT also has a slightly longer single-sided swingarm than the ST,with a brand new shock unit. Its remote preload adjuster wheel is easilyaccessible and designed to be set with your fingertips to suit solo or loadedriding. Front suspension, though externally identical and adjustable forpreload, like the ST, has been modified internally to offer even more controlunder braking. The wheels are a new design too, but with the same 3.5infront and 5.5in rear widths as the ST.

Finally, the bodywork around the cockpit has been redesigned with, what Simon describes as “More valuable surfaces.” He doesn’t meanthey’re carved from marble. “If you start talking to stylists about shapeand surfaces they’ll talk about adding value to surfaces. These are shapesand contours that are difficult to describe, but when you run your hand overit and see it in the flesh you’ll feel it.The original ST is good looking, butwe needed to move elements of the design on.”

Triumph’s Sprint GT is a bike that proves there’s a lot of life, fun, opportunities and experiences waiting for those who enter, or return to, thesports-tourer market. It’s a motorcycle for riders who want to experienceeverything 21st century road riding offers and, crucially, at a price few ofTriumph’s competitors can get close to.

TWO TO FOUR YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT INTO

FIVE MINUTES

To start, Simon Warburton, the product manager, and

Stuart Wood, the principal engineer on the concept side, will

agree on a specification for the project taking into account

customer feedback. The spec then gets given to the design

team, informing them what the project will be.The designers

break it down into different components and draw up their

own more detailed engineering specification for that

component. They’ll describe what material it needs to be and

give details of cost and mass (weight) targets.

In parallel with this process the stylists are working to a

brief to come up with a styling direction. The stylist delivers

either a 2D or 3D computer-generated rendering. It’s not just

a sketch of what would be nice for a bike to be. It represents

a manufacturable motorcycle. The stylists are working to

dimensions we’ve given them including: wheelbase, rake and

trail, engine size and position. They have the bare bones of a

bike that they are styling on top of.

Once the styling direction is signed off we work very closely

with the stylist to produce a full-size model of the bike.

We like to have the engineering sorted by the time the model

is finished, so it can be quite a difficult process because every

individual component is being worked on. The model looks

like a real rideable bike, not a concept. So it has wiring,

hoses, mirrors, indicators, to make sure we’re not kidding

ourselves about what it will look like.

The model is often started in clay, but normally by the time

we get nearer to sign-off we will have made parts from

model board, that will look very much like production parts.

We use ProEngineer solid modelling package to design the

bike. It’s a computer aided design package.Triumph employ

165 people in the design and development department.

In the early stages of a project we’ll still do calculations on

paper to ensure components are strong enough, but by the

end of the project we’ll have done Finite Element Analysis to

predict the fatigue life of key components.

We use computational fluid dynamics programs to reduce

the buffeting on riders and pillions. We also check the heat

flow onto riders.

We first drew the spec of the Sprint GT in October 2007,

we had styling sign-off in July 2008 and the bike was ready

to start production in May 2010.ECU

Triumph’s latest generation enginemanagement system ensures the

Sprint GT has the smoothest throttleresponse, while also upping power and

It’ll swallowtwo full-face helmets, has a colour-matched finish and a lock that utilises the ignitionkey, meaning it blends seamlessly with your Sprint GT. (Alternative top box offered forSprint ST).

TOP BOX EXTRASLife on the road can be a little vigorous for the contents of your top box, so why not investin an anti-slip, anti-vibration mat? Tailor-made from soft-touch material for a perfect fit,it’s also stylishly branded with the Triumph logo. And how about treating your passenger toan ergonomically-formed back rest? Its thoughtful design not only offers increased levelsof comfort but also adds to a feeling of security and well-being, which pillions will love.

TOURING SCREENAdd an extra level of comfort and practicality with this touring screen. Speciallydesigned and rigorously tested by Triumph engineers to work in harmony with the GT’saerodynamics, it offers enhanced wind and weather protection for those continent-crushing journeys without compromising stability or ride quality. Clear and slightlyhigher than the standard screen, it’s created using the latest injection mouldingtechnology for consistently high quality.

BILLET GPS MOUNTWe motorcyclists benefit from sat-nav systems more than most, being freed from theneed to battle with unruly, ripped maps stuffed into tank bags. This handsome mountingsystem is engineered in high-grade billet aluminium alloy with a resilient, deep blackanodised finish. Designed with Garmin systems in mind, it will also accept most otherbrands and, unlike many standard brackets, is good looking even when you’ve removedyour GPS at the end of the day.

GEL COMFORT SEATFor those requiring even higher levels of cosseting on those lengthy tours, this gel-filleddual seat will ensure your mind stays firmly focused on the ride and not elsewhere.Finished in premium-grade vinyl with attractive stitching detail and Triumph tag, itsergonomic design and supportive gel core reduces fatigue during long hours in the saddle, helping to ensure you arrive safely at your destination feeling fresh and ready for more.

FULL PAINT PROTECTION KITSAlready an option on the Urban Sports range for tank protection, this highly-effectivetreatment is now offered for the new Sprint GT offering extensive safeguarding ofpaintwork against scratching and stone chips. Developed in conjunction with marketleaders VentureShield, the tough yet almost invisible urethane film is extremelyresistant to yellowing, yet allows penetration of UV light, so protected areas fade at thesame rate as unprotected paintwork. What better way to preserve that world-renownedTriumph finish – and your investment.

FULL PAINT PROTECTION KITSAlready an option on the Urban Sports range for tank protection, this highly-effectivetreatment is now offered for the new Sprint GT offering extensive safeguarding ofpaintwork against scratching and stone chips. The Sprint has been a key model in the Triumph range from the day the

first motorcycle to carry this name was introduced in 1992. And since its

launch, the Sprint ST has proved popular in the biggest markets. For 2010

the ST has been given a number of improvements to ensure it remains one

of the world’s favourite sports-tourers. Updates include new reflector-style

triple headlight unit; re-designed cockpit; the same stunning 1050cc inline

triple engine, but with latest spec ECU for ultra-smooth throttle response.

Sportier than the GT, the Sprint ST is set to become even more attractive

thanks to its new ultra-competitive price.
