Letter from the Headmaster

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

At the opening of school, I had the good fortune of addressing the student body and their families. This year, I challenged each member of the Stratton Mountain School community to look at this school year as an opportunity. We pride ourselves on providing the environment and motivation for student athletes to identify and seize their own opportunities at SMS.

This year has already given us many reasons to be proud. We are in the midst of a very successful school year with a full school of 120 students, 44 of whom are new to SMS this year. We opened the year with 13 new faculty and staff who are infusing the school with energy and promise. Within these pages, you will find an introduction to these new members of our community. You will also find profiles of three new additions to the Board of Trustees, who share our vision and passion for the school. With this sense of renewal and progress, there is a palpable level of excitement as we enter the winter competition season. As we shift our focus toward the future, we are also reminded within these pages to look back at our foundation of academic and athletic excellence. For the past 35 years, Peggy deSantis has been the guardian of academic distinction for Stratton Mountain School. Her steady hand guided the way for SMS academics for more than three decades as a teacher, Assistant Headmaster, Dean of Studies and Winter Term Coordinator. On June 19, we were so pleased to honor Peggy with a gathering to celebrate her retirement from SMS. Her impact on us all will endure for many years to come. The 2009-2010 Annual Report, which begins on page 13, is always a big part of the Starting Gate. We are so grateful to the hundreds of donors who consistently make giving to SMS a priority. With your help, we raised $322,635 in 2009-2010, which is five percent more than we raised the prior year.

Although we realized an overall increase in giving last year, unrestricted annual giving decreased. Unrestricted giving is important because these gifts allow us to budget for annual expenses and ensure that your gift goes to the area of greatest need. If I have one message to convey to you this year, it is this: please consider giving an unrestricted gift to the SMS Annual Fund. Your gift will help us purchase needed materials for the classroom like SMART Boards and science materials as well as new weight room equipment and tuning tools. Importantly, it will help us extend financial aid to the 40 percent of current SMS families who receive assistance. We continue to make strides toward our goal of $4 million in the Building for Excellence Campaign. This endowment campaign strengthens the financial foundation of SMS and allows us to plan for the future. Stratton Mountain School is stronger and healthier each year because of your vision and commitment to our collective future. I thank you so much for partnering with us to ensure a bright future for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Christopher G. KaltsasHeadmaster

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Stratton Mountain School Board of Trustees welcomes three new members to the Board: Carolyn Beckedorff ’85, Jeffrey Lennox and Joanna Runeare.

Carolyn Beckedorff is no stranger to skiing, SMS and business. Carolyn spent three years as an alpine ski racer at SMS, culminating in 1985, when she returned to her home school in Wellesley, Mass., to graduate. She hasn’t stopped skiing since. In 2008, she was awarded the Al Sise Outstanding Alpine Masters Award by USSA. That year, Carolyn went on to win the Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) titles at Masters Nationals in Mammoth, Calif. She traveled to Austria to compete in the FIS Masters World Championships, where she took first in SL, second in GS and third in Super-G (SG) for her age group. Carolyn continued her podium pursuit by nabbing the 2010 Masters National Champion Title for SL and SG.

Carolyn graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in English. She competed on both the ski team and the soccer team for UNH but was plagued by injury. She went to work for Shearson Lehman for a year before moving on to The Baupost Group in Boston, where she is the Head Trader and has worked for the past 20 years.

Now, Carolyn’s focus remains on her 8-year-old son, Harrison, who is usually waiting for his mother to finish her race so they can go ski the mountain. Carolyn, her husband, Tony, and their son, Harrison, live in Wellesley, Mass.

Jeff Lennox is a Senior Vice President and Partner at Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc., a hydrogeology and environmental consulting firm headquartered in Shelton, Conn. He has been with the firm since 1982 following graduate school. His work covers environmental investigations and clean-up of sites with soil and groundwater contamination, as well as consulting for several water-utility clients. Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science in Hydrology from the University of New Hampshire in 1979, and he went on to earn his master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Groundwater Hydrology from Colorado State University in 1982.

Jeff and his wife, Linda, are parents to SMS alpine student athlete, Trevor, a junior, and Jared, a sophomore at Northeastern University in Boston. Linda and Jeff have been long-time supporters of SMS and are especially involved in the annual SMS Winter Ball, donating both time and auction items. Jeff has skied for more than 40 years, and he and his family spend their summers sailing aboard their Tartan 5300 sailing yacht. Jeff, Linda and Trevor now live in Weston, Vt.

Joanna Runeare has a passion for skiing and the mountains. She is one of seven kids, but her parents’ penchant for skiing motivated her family to get everyone on skis. Joanna, the granddaughter of Walt Disney, said that her family’s connection with snow sports started with her grandfather. She described Disney as a lover of skiing, and his involvement with the pageantry of the 1960 Olympics at Squaw Valley infused her family’s love of the sport. To make skiing more accessible for the whole family, Joanna’s grandfather bought a place in Mammoth, Calif.

Joanna raised her children with the same mindset. Her two sons became snowboarders, a passion which led her east to SMS with her son, Sebastian, who graduated from SMS in 2007. Joanna moved to Vermont to share in Sebastian’s SMS experience. During her time in Vermont, Joanna established strong friendships that still endure. “Sebastian pulled me into this wonderful world,” she said. “People worry about their kids leaving home, but sometimes they pull us into this great stuff!”

With her parents and her brother, Walter, Joanna became involved in a family project, which started the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco in 2009. She continues to serve on its Board, which is led by her mother and brother. Additionally, Joanna’s family, including her siblings and parents, own Silverado Vineyards in Napa, Calif., which opened in 1981. Joanna lives in Bonny Doon, Calif., in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Welcome to the Board

At a June 19 retirement party, the Stratton Mountain School community bid adieu or

valere to longtime teacher and administrator Peggy deSantis. Peggy retired from her role as

the Assistant Headmaster, Dean of Studies, English Teacher, Latin Teacher and Winter Term Coordinator at the conclusion of the

2009-2010 academic year.

35 years of dedication

Page 9: 2011 Stratton Mountain School Starting Gate

Starting Gate Winter 2011Winter 2011 Starting Gate 9

For the past 35 years, Peggy deSantis set the tone for academic excellence and

consistency at SMS. Beginning as a 7th-and 8th-grade English Teacher in 1975, Peggy worked her way up to a position where she was involved in every aspect of the school. Her indelible mark is quite simply everywhere at Stratton Mountain School. Additionally, Peggy worked tirelessly to ensure future momentum of the school when she spearheaded and directed the 10-year re-accreditation process by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Peggy’s many talents, her steady hand and her firm commitment to academic excellence forever changed the landscape of Stratton Mountain School. Nearly every alumnus and faculty member of the SMS community was strongly impacted by Peggy’s presence in their professional and educational development.

At Graduation in May, Headmaster Chris Kaltsas awarded Peggy the Richard Miller Award for “performing her task with outstanding leadership.” Upon receiving her award, she addressed the Class of 2010 with these sage words:

“So graduates, as we move towards our next step hand in hand, understand that we will follow yet another unfamiliar path. You will seek continued recognition and an extension of your intellectual promise and athletic talent, and I will be seeking those yet-to-be-discovered adventures that await my husband and me. Promise me that you will never forget your high school alma mater. Stratton

Mountain School is such a special place. You have been, and you will continue to be the recipients of a fine education, splendid athletic direction and additional resources for personal achievement from nurturing adults who have and will continue to believe in you. I shall never forget any of you. Enjoy this exciting trip to and through the unfamiliar, as I will enjoy mine. I wish you great good fortune and Godspeed.”

The 2009-2010 yearbook was also dedicated in her name. Peggy’s colleagues and former students took the opportunity to thank her for her role in their lives at her June 19, 2010 retirement party. Below are excerpts from her retirement party. Some were also written in her online memory book. Thank you, Peggy for 35 wonderful years!

“I had a wonderful professional experience with Peggy. She led our academic program and maintained the highest standards and quality of education that we’ve come to associate with SMS. It was so important to me to work with someone with her strength and dedication to the values and strict adherence to the mission of Stratton Mountain School. We made tremendous progress over the years, and I attribute much of that to her help and support. I hope she will always remain close to SMS through the years. And that she enjoys the fruits of what has been a long, successful and proud part of our school.” - Chris Kaltsas, SMS Headmaster

“Peggy was the one who set the academic standards of the school and set the standards for the faculty on how you should perform as a professional teacher. As we were transforming the school from a tutoring school to a full-term school, she was really pivotal in providing the standards of a real educational institution. Peggy was always aware of the demands of a ski racer. She was always sensitive to the idea that you should do the best you could on the hill and the best you could do in the classroom. The fact that she could see it from both sides was really good for the school.” - TD McCormick, SMS History Teacher and Coach (1971 – 2006), current member SMS Board of Trustees

“Peggy showed me what it was to be a professional, to have high expectations for kids and to do my own homework. She’s been a wonderful person to work with, and I’ll miss her.” - Alex Lehmann, English Teacher, Dean of Academics

“She’s still my teacher. I still learn from her everyday.” - Dave

Rothman SMS ’02, Math Teacher

“Somehow you managed to turn a flooded basement into a classroom and library, and transform a bunch of kids who would rather be playing in the snow into students. Your long-time commitment to furthering academics at SMS has set the school above all other ski academies. There is only one Mrs. deSantis, and the school will never be the same without you. I hope your influence remains for a long time to come. Enjoy your retirement!” - Kristin Luckenbill SMS ’97

“I’ve been really lucky to work with Peggy for the last 30 years. I have two words to describe Peggy. Consummate professional. She is amazing. In all the time I’ve known

her, there’s never been a personal agenda. It’s always been what’s best for the school and what’s best for the kids. It’s

been an honor working with you.” - Sverre Caldwell, Nordic Program Director, former Headmaster

COLLEGE GUIDANCE

fall aT STraTTon mounTain School meanS a buSy beginning To a neW year. STudenTS are engaged in inTenSive academic demandS

while coaches drive the students to build their physical foundations for the challenges of the upcoming competition season. Seniors, of course, have the added responsibility of preparing their college applications.

Stratton Mountain School’s students are certainly a unique and impressive group, and their drive and determination to succeed on so many fronts is a constantly evolving proof of this observation, which manifests itself in the many tangible results our students realize, from the slopes and trails to the classroom, in their personal lives, and in their college acceptances.

Our students have adapted admirably to the ever-changing process of the college application, and last year’s impressive list of college acceptances continued a number of trends that we’ve observed over the past few years. As electronic applications have become increasingly standardized and have replaced the paper and ink pages of the past, our students have found increasing opportunity to apply to a diverse array of colleges. This year, the Common Application is being accepted by a record number of over 400 colleges and universities. This fact allows students to apply to any of these schools by filling out a single copy of the application and then submitting it electronically to the list of schools which they, with the oversight of the college guidance department, deem appropriate. I was thrilled last year to see this expansive opportunity result in students who now attend school in locations not traditionally associated with SMS athletes such as multiple branches of the University of California, Whittier College in Los Angeles, and the Citadel, to the more traditional schools such as Dartmouth and Middlebury Colleges where our students continue to thrive. While athletes at some of these schools may no longer be pursuing the athletic opportunities that were so important to them while at SMS, the work ethic and goal-setting abilities that they developed as students here help assure their success in diverse fields as college students. By Alex Lehmann

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOMThis fall, the Stratton Mountain School Parents’ Association do-nated $2,200 toward the purchase of six new LCD projectors. The generous donation covered half the cost of the projector purchase and installation project, and now all classrooms are equipped with this technology. From English to Phys-ics, SMS teachers are using this and other technology to maximize the delivery of their curriculum. “I’m able to project position-versus-time graphs and have a student come to the board and draw a velocity-versus-time graph right on the position graph,” said Tim Taylor, a physics and math teacher. “I also use a document reader with the projector to show student home-work assignments to the class.”The projectors also come to great use in the English classrooms. “My new LCD projector makes it possible for me to have several documents prepared for projection in the course of a single period,” said Kim Tait, an English teacher. “I can project a freewrite prompt, for example, but then click back to a Kierkegaard quote on existential-ism for reference and then back again, without having to erase material from the board.”No matter what the use, the pro-jectors allow teachers to cater to different teaching techniques and learning styles, making the class-room a more dynamic learning experience.

Professional DevelopmentStratton Mountain School Spanish Teacher Matt Seager toured Central America last summer as part of a professional development trip. He spent two weeks at LSSN-León Spanish School of Nicaragua where he took advanced Spanish classes. Additionally, he spent time in Copán,

Honduras touring the ancient, Mayan ruins there. Pictured here is the city of León, Nicaragua, as seen from the Cathedral de León.

Annual Report2009-2010

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

I’m so grateful to look through this Annual Report and see all of the loyal friends of Stratton Mountain School. Many of you have supported SMS each year without fail. During these difficult economic times, you have made your gift to SMS a priority, and that has made a significant difference in the lives of our student athletes everyday. Thank you for your continued support of this great school!

For the 2009-2010 fiscal year, ending on June 30, 2010, the SMS Annual Fund raised $322,635, which represents a five-percent increase over total Annual Giving to SMS last year. With giving across all sectors down by 3.6 percent in 20091, we are grateful for your steady support and guiding hand.

Your gift to the SMS Annual Fund is crucial to the continued success of Stratton Mountain School. The Annual Fund sustains the excellence in academics and excellence in athletics that is the trademark of an SMS education. Your support allows our teachers and coaches to

provide the absolute best in classroom delivery and athletic programming. Your gift allows us as a school to pursue our mission without reservation. With your help, we are able to help a new generation of student athletes pursue excellence in competitive winter sports and college preparatory academics while developing strong personal values.

We realize that each of you have many claims on your time and attention. We are so happy that you continue to value your membership in the SMS community. Thank you for continued support

’70s1974 Fritz Wahl lives in New York City and is an active supporter of Stratton Moun-tain School.

1977 John Grush has opened a new ski shop, First Trax, near Mount Snow Resort.

1977 Scott Hardy is a Stratton Vt., resident. Scott still hits the slopes in the winter and was seen hiking the mountain many times this past summer.

1977 Stephen Diao recently saw Benzi Henrich in Park City, Utah. Stephen wrote, “We had a wonderful time over some wine and caught up on the past 20 years.”

1978 Darcy Chapel Ahl stays busy as the Co-founder and Vice President of Public Af-fairs of Illume Software, Inc. The company’s first product, iZUP, is a technology solution to the deadly habit of dis-tracted driving caused by cell phone use behind the wheel. The company has recently made tremendous progress. Darcy lives in Connecticut, but works at the company’s headquarters in Newton, Mass. Her son, Cort ’08, is taking a semester away from Duke to enjoy studies in Bar-celona, Spain, where Cort’s SMS roommate, John Sitarz ’08, is also studying. Darcy says, “Sounds like trouble to me!” Her middle son, Kemper, began his freshman year at Davidson. As she watched the local news in Charlotte, N.C., when she dropped Kemper off at college, she caught a glimpse of City Councilman Andy Dulin ’79

on the television. Lastly, her eighth-grade daughter, Signe, is gearing up for ski season and preparing for boarding school visits, including SMS.

1978 Jeanne Hammond Larson just bought a fold-ing bicycle for adventures in America and abroad. She still spends her summers com-mercial salmon fishing near Kodiak Island in Alaska with her husband.

1978 Jody Linehan lives in Newfields, N.H., with his wife and two children. His son, Blake, is a JII day student at Waterville Academy this winter. His son is also an avid, competitive rock climber. His 12-year-old daughter, Olivia, is a very accomplished equestrian and field hockey player. Two years ago, Jody started a new company with some colleagues from the footwear business. They purchased a trail running and outdoor brand from Timber-land called GoLite Footwear. Jody says his company has innovative technology that is gaining some real market momentum. Be sure to look for GoLite Footwear in major retailers across the US.

1978 Kim Reichhelm recently returned from a two-month trip in Chile where she heli-skied in fresh snow with fun clients and friends. She spent the first 10 days in Valle Nevado where she and seven others used a private helicop-ter to ski 200,000 vertical feet in a week. Many of their drops were more than 13,000 feet high! She’s posted photos on Facebook or go to: http://gallery.me.com/skiwith-

kim1#100114. In the next few months, she’ll be testing new products, shooting photos and skiing with her friends. She says, “I enjoyed many glasses of Los Vasco with the wine king, Mario Lobo, ran some gates with Portillo’s new ski school director, Robin Barnes, and made many lake runs, possibly one of my favorite runs in the world.” Right now, she’s working on her 2011 schedule, negotiat-ing contracts for 2011-2012 and updating her website. She wishes everyone well, and she hopes everyone is getting stoked to be back on snow soon. Be sure to visit her website, www.skiwithkim.com.

1978 Sue Long Wemyss had a chance to return to SMS this August to be a part of Sverre Caldwell’s BKL sum-mer camp. Four of her skiers from the BKL Club Great Glen Trails in Pinkham Notch, N.H., also attended. She said, “It was fun to see that Stratton athletes are still visiting some of our favorite spots in the area, such as Pikes Falls!” She was impressed with the improvements in the SMS fa-cilities. She frequently follows the SMS Nordic program, enjoying the daily updates posted on the Nordic blog (www.smsxc.blogspot.com). She wishes the SMS skiers good luck and hopes to catch the group in action in Rum-ford this January.

1979 Glen Mottau recently purchased a house on Strat-ton Mountain. He’s the proud father of two current SMS students, Tanner ’12 and Kieran ’14.

1979 Heidi Preuss says she loves seeing so many of her SMS classmates on Face-book. Because of it, she had been able to meet up with a number of people she hasn’t seen in years. She says, “Benzi (Ross) posted a great class photo that brought back many wonderful memories. We all wondered about those we haven’t heard from. Come find us!” She’s expanding her gardening passions, run-ning an annual street festival www.9thand9thstreetfestival.com, doing Bikram Yoga as much as possible, managing winter condo rentals in Park City, Utah, visiting her parents in New Hampshire when she can and geocaching every-where she goes. She says, “If you come through Salt Lake City, I’m always open to have people visit, go skiing, hiking, dinner, etc. Don’t be shy!”

1979 Lisa Densmore lives in Hanover, N.H., and owns Densmore Designs. After almost two decades, she’s resigned from the SMS Board of Trustees. This next winter, they have decided to shift the academy into a winter-term school only. They had a mini SMS reunion in Park City last December when The Frends Crew stopped by the academy to celebrate Jack Mitrani’s 21st birthday. Tyler Emond, Kevin & Adam Pearce, Jack & Luke Mitrani, Louie Vito, Ellery Hollingsworth, Danny Davis, Christian Connors, Andy Coghlan, Scotty Lago and Jack Coghlan all helped Jack Mitrani celebrate his big day! Jack Coghlan said, “We are really excited to hear about Ross Powers running the SMS Snowboard Program!”

She lives on her family farm in New Hampshire and would love to re-connect with old SMS friends.

1980 Hayley Wolff moved to Boulder, Colo., with her family in August. She accepted a job in the finance group with Vail Resorts in Broomfield, Colo. Although she says she still has many boxes to unpack, her family is settling in nicely. Her two daughters, who are 10 and 13, are happy in their new school, and the entire family is looking forward to powder days.

1980 Heidi Radloff McClellan lives in White River Junction, Vt., with her husband, Derek, and son, Max, who is 2. When she’s not chasing Max on the slopes or at the beach, she works as an Athletic Trainer for the Sharon Sports Medicine Clinic. She says, “It’s amazing how many past and present SMS families I have run into in the past 30 years since graduation. Give a big ‘hello’ to Sverre and John Casella! I still hope to visit the ‘new’ campus some-day soon. All the best!”

1981 Connie Lizza Moyer now lives in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. She keeps busy by rais-ing her three children with her husband. This past year, she has been coaching the Mam-moth Mountain Mighty Mite Ski Team. Her family enjoys skiing, camping, biking, boat-ing and hiking.

This past year, he saw SMS alumna Heidi Preuss twice. Before this year, he hadn’t seen her since 1980. Preuss stopped by for a visit last fall and got him hooked on geocaching.

1982 Greg Needell resigned from the US Ski Team in 2009 to spend some time at home with his family. He has been coaching local kids at the ski area in Wenatchee, Wis. He recently started a business called Alpine Race Consulting, which specializes in training and educating ski club staffs. He says, “This involves schedul-ing, negotiating, teaching, coaching, driving, cooking, cleaning, playing, understand-ing and loving – the usual. It’s often crazy but so worth it.” He works as the information and graphic designer for a wine industry trade publica-tion in his beautiful small town, which is famous for its grapes. He bikes to work, where he creates the graph-ics for both web and print.

1984 Susanna Giombetti Whitcher lives in Concord, N.H., with her 7-year-old son, Will. She is the Vice President of Public Affairs & Marketing for Elliot Health System in Manchester, N.H.
