A FREE Day of Music, Dance, Storytelling & Art for Families

There’s one place in the neighborhood where you can hear Los Lobos in concert, take mariachi classes, watch danza Azteca, create Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead art, view the work of local artists, and find something for the entire family—from children to grandparents. That place is Plaza de la Raza.

Nestled within the 40-acre Lincoln Park at 3540 N. Mission Road, Plaza de la Raza is where everyone comes together to visit, relax and have fun. It’s been the heart and soul of Latino Los Angeles for over 40 years, with its outdoor amphitheater, gallery, indoor theater, gift shop and—of course—its plaza.

There’s no better time to experience Plaza than during the annual Target Feria de la Familia. Plaza comes alive with free music, performances, food and activities for the entire family. “This is our most popular event,” says María Jiménez-Torres, Plaza’s interim Executive Director, “and we couldn’t do it without the generous support of companies like Target, our long-time partner that has long supported our community and our families.”

Visit Plaza once and you’ll be back for other programs such as the Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead commemoration held each year on November 1.

If you’re looking for something to do outdoors this summer and fall, consider performances presented on the Plaza’s Willie Velasquez Outdoor Stage, which has hosted such greats as Los Lobos, Willie G and Thee Midniters, renowned orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, plus Cuba’s Buena Vista Social Club and the Plaza’s renowned Mariachi Monumental de America.

Theater is alive and well at Plaza’s Margo Albert Theatre. Original plays by students and professionals have included ¡Cantinflas!, written and performed by Herbert Siguenza of Culture Clash; The Last Angry Brown Hat, an award-winning production that premiered

at Plaza and continues to tour the nation today; and Ray Bradbury’s The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit.

Plaza’s dance studio has brought together not only aspiring and professional dancers but also many of the greatest choreographers. Bella Lewitsky, Alvin Ailey and Twyla Tharp are among the many dancers who have performed and even taught classes at the Plaza’s dance studio. Francisco Martinez Dance Theatre, the West Coast’s only Hispanic ballet company,

Plaza's the Place for Families and Fun!

and Brasil Brazil are just a few of the many popular groups that have also dazzled audiences with their performances in Plaza’s intimate studio.

There’s a place in your very own neighborhood where you can come face to face with the paintings of Frida Kahlo, the work of famed muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, the canvasses of local artists such as Patssi Valdez, and art of Cheech Marin’s The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana. That place is Plaza’s Boathouse Gallery, which celebrates the rich, vibrant culture of Latino art with exhibitions held year round. A perennial favorite is Con Nuestras Manos/With Our Hands, an

exhibition of paintings, drawings, folk art, puppets, and sculpture by budding artists in the community.

Whatever your interest—music, dance, performance, art, culture—exciting

events await you and your entire family at Plaza de la Raza. Visit today, call (323) 223-2475, or go online to www.plazadelaraza.org.

Where can you find the future stars of salsa, mariachi, Latin jazz and folklórico dance? Thanks to Plaza de la Raza, they may be right here in your own backyard. For over 40 years, this cultural and educational institution in Lincoln Heights has helped young people develop their talents and succeed as artists, musicians, and performers. Through its Community Ambassadors program, Plaza profices professional arts training and showcases young talent at special events throughout Los Angeles and Southern California.

“This program helps future stars shine and provides the invaluable experience of performing live at community functions and special events,” says María Jiménez-Torres, interim Executive Director. Plaza gives children, teens and families access to the arts through free and reduced-rate programs, services and classes. Community Ambassadors is one of Plaza’s many professional training and workforce development programs for young people.

Since the program began in 2008, the Community Ambassadors have entertained more than 50,000 people at Plaza de la Raza as well as other community venues. These include the prestigious REDCAT at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles City Hall, and schools. They play at public and private events including community festivals, school assemblies, quinceañeras, weddings, concerts, and conferences.

Torres. “Plaza de la Raza recognizes that the arts

provide healthy alternatives to the often-harsh experiences

that come with growing up in an urban area. That’s why Plaza is

committed to providing a welcoming space where every young person can explore self-expression, innovation, creativity and individuality.”

The Community Ambassadors program is administered by Plaza de la Raza with the support of Congressman Xavier Becerra and funding by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

What do Ozomatli’s Raul Pacheco and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s Eduardo Xol have in common? Both got an early start in their creative careers at Plaza de la Raza.

“I went to various children’s workshops, but the one that stuck with me was a guitar class,” says Raul. “I was starting to learn how to play and I heard that Plaza de la Raza had guitar classes. I signed up at 14.” Raul is now a vocalist and musician in the groundbreaking band that has recorded over six albums, won two Grammy awards, and opened for Carlos Santana and Lenny Kravitz, among others.

For Eduardo, Plaza’s theater was where he rehearsed in his early days with a Mexican dance theatre troupe. Today, multi-talented Eduardo’s career includes roles as TV personality, music and video producer, recording artist, author, and product designer.

Raul and Eduardo are two of thousands of people who have successfully discovered and nurtured their creativity at Plaza de la Raza. Since 1970, this educational institution in East L.A.’s Lincoln Park has taught young people to develop their talents and succeed as artists, musicians, and performers.

Throughout the year, Plaza offers nearly 500 classes in art, music, dance and theater. Classes are held on weekday afternoons and Saturdays so the entire family can have fun and learn together. Best of all, most classes are free or low-cost.

“Our kids have gone on to do great things. We’re so proud of what they’ve learned and accomplished,” says María Jiménez-Torres. “Plaza’s classes are part of career paths that have led our students to Harvard University, Juilliard, USC, and many others of the nation’s finest academic institutions.”

In addition to laying the foundation for academic excellence, classes also provide valuable job training for young people. “Our students are frequently hired to perform in concerts, festivals, quinceañeras, weddings, and even movies,” said Jimenez-Torres.

While classes are offered by many institutions, for people who have participated, Plaza’s classes are special. “The overall vibe at Plaza is what has always been important to me: real accomplished artists of many different mediums teaching regular people from the neighborhood and beyond,” says Raul. “The importance of the continuing artistic exposure of Mexicano/Chicano art and expression is seen through all I have gone through there. Whether taking classes or attending performances, the experience at Plaza is one that bonds. That benefits me and the community.”

What kind of classes does Plaza offer for you and your family?

For young people who aspire to become a groundbreaking musician like Raul Pacheco, Plaza offers classes in all types of music, from piano to drumming. Among the most popular is its award-winning mariachi program, which includes lessons for playing vihuela, guitarrón, harp, violin, or trumpet. Professional musicians teach mariachi songs and dances in the styles of son, canción ranchera, huapango, and pasodoble, among others. Courses feature quarterly student recitals and conclude with a grand-finale public performance.

For children and adults who dream of being on stage, dream no more. Plaza’s theater classes teach everything you need to know about acting, writing, and play production. In the Youth Theatre Program, teachers from Plaza and CalArts work together to provide

Plaza Offers Kids & Adults a Path to Success

college-level performing arts training to kids ages 10-18. The nine-month course culminates with students writing and performing a play at Disney Concert Hall’s REDCAT Theatre and Plaza’s Margo Albert Theatre.

If, like a young Eduardo Xol, your passion is dance, Plaza’s dance studio is the place for you. Whether you like hip hop, jazz, salsa, tap, danza folklórico, danza Azteca, or even modern dance, you’ll have fun learning the moves. And you’ll learn from the very best because Plaza’s teachers are professional dancers. Plaza even invites world-renowned choreographers like Lula Washington to work with students in classes and special performances.

You can also get in touch with your inner Frida Kahlo—or Diego Rivera—by taking one of Plaza’s many classes in painting, printmaking, folk art and sculpture. The classes culminate with an exhibition of student artwork, Con Nuestras Manos/With Our Hands. The show is presented each year free of charge to the public at Plaza, which has exhibited the work of renowned muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, local artists Patssi Valdez and Frank Romero, and yes, even Frida Kahlo.

These and Plaza’s many other classes are reasonably priced, and scholarships are available for most students to attend Plaza’s after-school programs.

For many participants, the value of Plaza’s programs extends beyond the educational to include nurturing cultural identity and family togetherness. “As a parent, I know that my children’s involvement in organized activities is important,” says Raul Pacheco. “As a Chicano, it is important for my children to be aware of the various forms of culturally relevant artistic expressions within their own history. Plaza is able to accomplish this.”

While Plaza offers plenty of opportunities for children to begin their artistic journey, its wide range of creative outlets also appeals to adults in every stage of life.

Plaza de la Raza is the only multidisciplinary cultural arts and educational center dedicated to serving Eastside communities in Los Angeles. Founded in 1970 by prominent labor, business and civic leaders as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, it offers affordable after-school, intergenerational arts education programs to nearly 5,000 children, teens and adults each year. Plaza presents more than 500 classes annually (beginning to advanced) that are taught quarterly by local artists and performers in theater, dance, music, and the visual arts. In addition, the center attracts more than 25,000 visitors each year with its free cultural programs, and manages almost 300 community volunteers.
