A Message from Philip R. Hobson

Page 6: 2011 The Promise Playbill

The Promise begins on the banks of the Paluxy River in historic Glen Rose, Texas. A grandpa and his grandchildren, Billy and Lisa, explore the riverbed in search of the dinosaur tracks that have made Somervell County such a popular destination for visitors. As they settle by a campfire, Grandpa is reminded of a story that his own grandpa used to tell him – a story about the Promise – a story about the One sent by God so many years ago.

Loud pyrotechnics are used in Scene 5 – The Desert.)Scene 1 – The ProphetsBilly and Lisa are on a hike with their Grandpa along the banks of the Paluxy River in Somervell County, Texas when Grandpa stumbles across a familiar spot by the river. Reminded of when he sat as a boy and listened to his own grandfather tell stories, Grandpa introduces the Promised One. Finding themselves suddenly in the midst of the Old Testament prophets Jeremiah, Isaiah, Micah, and Zechariah, the three begin to experience the life of Jesus in a very special way.Song: A Promise Is a PromiseMusic & Lyrics by Walt HarrahVocals: Grandpa, Lisa, Billy, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Micah, ZechariahScripture: Jeremiah 23:5-6, Isaiah 7:14-15, Micah 5:2-4, Zechariah 9:9-10

Scene 2 – The Road to Bethlehem & NativityIn awe at the sight of the Prophets, Billy and Lisa encourage Grandpa to tell the rest of the story. Soon, they meet Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem. Song: MagnifyMusic & Lyrics by Luke GarrettVocals: Young Mary, Joseph, LisaScripture: Luke 2:1-5

Scene 3 – Carpenter Shop & TempleAfter Herod’s decree to kill all male babies in Bethlehem under the age of two, Joseph and Mary flee with Yeshua to Egypt. When Herod dies, they are led back by an angel to Nazareth where 12-year-old Yeshua grew up in His father’s carpenter shop. At the temple during Passover, Yeshua impresses the church leaders with His knowledge and understanding of Scripture.Song: Little YeshuaMusic by Gary Rhodes; Lyrics by Claire and Curt CloningerVocals: Joseph, YeshuaScripture: Luke 2:43–49

Act I

Page 8: 2011 The Promise Playbill

Scene 4 – The BaptismJesus grew both tall and wise and was loved by God and man alike. When He was about 30, He began to be about His Father’s business in a new way. His coming was foretold by a man called John the Baptist.Song: The Kingdom of Heaven/One VoiceWritten & Arranged by Robert SterlingVocals: John the Baptist, TownspeopleScripture: Mark 1:5-6, Mark 1:9-11

Scene 5 – The DesertAfter Jesus was baptized by John, He was led by the Spirit of God into the wilderness where He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. The days were hot and dry and the nights were cold and lonely. At His weakest moment, the Tempter came . . . Satan himself.Song: It Is WrittenMusic & Lyrics by Steve Amerson & David T. ClydesdaleVocals: Jesus, SatanScripture: Luke 4:3-13

Scene 6 – Calling the DisciplesThe time had come for Jesus to begin His ministry. He went in search of those to follow Him, and He chose 12 men. They became known as the disciples. Taught by the Master Himself, the Twelve brought many people to hear the healing words of Jesus. Song: I See the Kingdom ComingMusic & Lyrics by Claire Cloninger & Don MarshVocals: Peter, James, John the Beloved, Matthew, DisciplesScripture: Mark 3:13-15, Matthew 5:1-12

Scene 7 – Sermon on the MountainsideAs a large crowd gathers on a hillside, Jesus preaches His message of love but is interrupted by Caiaphas and the other religious leaders. His answers to their questions send them into a rage and they hastily exit, except for Nicodemus who is desperate for a deeper understanding of God’s salvation.Song: Closer Than a HeartbeatMusic & Lyrics by Claire Cloninger & Don MarshVocals: JesusScripture: Matthew 5:13-16, John 3:17-18

Scene 8 – Jesus and the Twelve by the RiverThe disciples join Grandpa in a joyful dance of praise. As Jesus joins in, the group experiences a fleeting moment of unity. Soon after, events begin to challenge their resolve. At sea during a storm, Jesus confronts the disciples about their lack of faith.Song: He Is JehovahMusic & Lyrics by Betty Jean RobinsonVocals: Grandpa, Jesus, DisciplesScripture: Matthew 8:23-27

Scene 9 – Healing in the MarketplaceJesus’ ministry was much more than teaching. Wherever He went, He changed the lives of people in need of physical and spiritual healing. He gave sight to the blind, made the crippled walk, and delivered the possessed from their demons. He astonished listeners with His message of kindness, acceptance, and love. One of the greatest expressions of His power was when He delivered Jairus’ young daughter from the clutches of death.Song: In the Name of the LordMusic by Sandi Pattie HelveringLyrics by Phil McHugh, Gloria Gaither, Sandi Patti HelveringQuartet: Woman in the Crowd, Harlot, Crippled Woman, & Jairus’ WifeScripture: Mark 8:23-25, John 8:3-11, Luke 8: 29b-31, Mark 5:22-24

Scene 10 – The Sanhedrin CourtThe more miracles Jesus performed, the more He angered the religious leaders. And the more Jesus taught, the more they thought He was teaching against them. Hatred built up in their hearts, and they began to plot against Him.Scripture: John 11:53,Matthew 16:21-23

Scene 11 – The Kingdom of HeavenAround a campfire, Peter demands that Jesus explain the Kingdom of God, but Jesus’ answers do not satisfy him. God’s plan for establishing His Kingdom on the earth requires that Jesus die. Peter’s refusal to go along with this plan draws them into an intense confrontation. In one of Jesus’ harshest rebukes, He spurns Peter for not being mindful of the things of God. In their moment of conflict, Satan appears. Scripture: Matthew 16:23

Page 11: 2011 The Promise Playbill

Scene 12 – Lazarus’ TombFor four days since his death and burial, Lazarus’ sisters Mary and Martha of Bethany have come to mourn. Mary consoles her grief-stricken sister until Jesus and the disciples arrive at the scene. He tenderly weeps with them, but a moment later, everyone is astonished when He calls Lazarus out of the grave. As their brother steps from death into life, Martha finally grasps the power and majesty of Jesus—proclaiming that He is the One who has come to save the world.Song: In the Name of the Lord (Reprise)Music by Sandi Pattie HelveringLyrics by Phil McHugh, Gloria Gaither, Sandi Patti HelveringVocals: Mary, Martha, Disciples, Mourners, Grandpa, Lisa, BillyScripture: John 11:35-44

ConsiderJesus said you must come to God as a little child, without pride, eager • to receive God’s love and to follow His commandments, (Luke 18:15 - 17). What does this mean to you?

The Pharisees asked, “What was the greatest commandment in all the • law of Moses?” (Matthew 22:37 - 39). What was Jesus’ reply, and what does it mean to you today?

We were made in the image of a creative God (Genesis 1:27). What role • have the Arts played in spreading the Good News and how have the Arts affected your walk with the Lord? (Examples: music, plays, paint-ing, architecture, etc.)

Choose a favorite scene from • The Promise. Why does it stand out in your mind?

If you had lived during the time Jesus was on the Earth, would you • have been one of his supporters or would you have been at the cross shouting, “Crucify Him”? Why do you think you would be one or the other?

The Scribes and Pharisees were most likely good, well-intentioned, • and faithful followers of their beliefs. What teachings of Jesus did they oppose? What were Jesus’ reasons for opposing the Pharisees?

What insight, revelation, or encouragement will you take away from • your experience at The Promise?

At a very young age, BJ began his journey with The Promise. He could be found sitting in the audience singing the songs and even quoting nearly all major character’s lines. BJ was not content just sitting in the audience, he soon found enjoyment helping in props as a runner, on stage performing miscellaneous roles, and one season he even made his own costume. It became evident that BJ had an ear for sound and so he began running

the mixing console for many seasons. In 2004, he had the privilege of joining several other long time cast members in traveling to Seoul, South Korea to perform. In 2010, BJ was able to take on a new role, serving as General Manager for the production. If there is anything BJ would like our audience to get from The Promise, it would be that they come to know Christ in a totally new and extraordinary way, committing to love one another!

General Manager - BJ Oliver

Associate Producer - Kristen Gibson

Kristen Gibson joined The Promise in Glen Rose Organization in 2005 working both in the business office as an Administrative Assistant and with the production as the Makeup Artist. Throughout the years, she has participated where called, and is now celebrating her 7th season with The Promise as the Associate Producer and Assistant Director. Kristen can be reached year round in our business office.

Faced with the guilt of his betrayal, Judas throws the coins and flees.Song: Glorify Your SonMusic & Lyrics by Steve Amerson & David T. ClydesdaleVocals: JesusScripture: John 17:1b, Luke 22:54

Scene 5 – Denial in the StreetsHaving escaped the soldiers, Peter and John watch helplessly as centurions beat and drag Jesus up the steps to the Sanhedrin Court. Thrust between wanting to help but afraid of getting caught, Peter endures the prying eyes of a servant girl, a Roman soldier, and a Pharisee—the three people who accuse him of knowing Jesus. Soon, the guilt of denying his faith plunges Peter into despair. Defeated, he can only watch as false witnesses inspire a verdict of guilty against Jesus and the Pharisees plot His execution.Song: YesterdayMusic & Lyrics by Rodger StraderVocals: PeterScripture: Luke 22:56-62 , Matthew 25:59-69, Mark 14:55-66, John 18:13

Scene 6 – Jesus’ Trials Before Pilate and HerodJesus is delivered in chains to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. But His refusal to answer the questions posed to Him prompt Pilate to seek another way of handling Jesus. So, he sends Him off to Herod, leaving the Pharisees embittered.

Scene 7 – Jesus Before PilateRebuffed by Herod, Jesus is returned to face the law under Pilate, who orders that Jesus be flogged. When the bloodthirsty crowd wants more, Pilate trades Barabbas for Jesus. In another act of cruelty, Roman soldiers hammer a crown of thorns onto Jesus’ head and lead Him to the hill of Golgotha to be crucified.Song: Let Him Be CrucifiedMusic & Lyrics by David T. ClydesdaleVocals: Pilate, TownspeopleScripture: John 19:14b-16

Scene 8 – The CrucifixionWounded and exhausted, Jesus carries a cross up the Via Dolorosa, or “way of sorrows,” being jeered and beaten at every step. When they reach the top, soldiers nail His feet and hands to the wooden beams and lift Jesus up for all to see. Softly, Mary (his mother) and John (his beloved friend) plead for mercy. Mocked by the Pharisee, Jesus faces His final moments of life. Just then, Satan appears, pleased with the way things are turning out.Song: Via DolorosaMusic & Lyrics by Billy Sprague & Niles BoropQuartet: Woman in the Crowd, Crippled Woman, Harlot, Jairus’ WifeScripture: Matthew 27:32-33

Song: Cross of CalvaryMusic & Lyrics by Claire Cloninger, Don Marsh, Lorie MarshVocals: Mary at the Cross, John the BelovedScripture: Luke 23:33-34, Matthew 27:41-42, Luke 23:46

Scene 9 – The ResurrectionMary (Jesus’ mother), Mary of Magdala, Mary of Bethany, and a host of mourners arrive at the tomb to grieve. Intending to anoint Jesus’ body, the three women are amazed when they find the tomb open . . . and empty. As the Disciples rush in, everyone gathers to see proof of the living Lord, Jesus Christ.Song: AriseMusic by Kathy Frizzel. Lyrics by Claire Cloninger Arranged by Gary RhodesVocals: Angel GabrielScripture: Matthew 27:35-66, Mark 16:1, Luke 23:33-56, John 19:18-42

2011 Prayer Leaders Steve & Mary Mehaffey

Steve and Mary Mehaffey are honored to lead the Prayer Team and act as the 2011 Chaplain for the cast and crew. They’ve been married for 40 years and have been in The Promise for many of those years. With The Promise, they have traveled to Israel in 2000 and to Seoul, South Korea in 2004. In Glen Rose, the home of The Promise, Steve has

played a Roman Soldier, disciple, and shepherd. Mary has been an angel, a kiosk attendant, an accuser of Peter, and a member of the quick-change crew. They hope to be effective ministers to the cast and crew because they have experience balancing the stresses and challenges of real life with the commitment and dedication of being part of The Promise and its life-changing ministry. It is their continual prayer that everyone here tonight will experience something new and meaningful about Jesus and accept Him as their Lord and Savior. Steve and Mary are available to pray with or just to talk to anytime during tonight’s performance of The Promise. They can be found at the Prayer Center near the Gift Shop.
