As 2012 begins we want to reflect on The Sport of Giving’s many blessings. We are so thank-ful for all the volunteers, sponsors, and players that donated their time, talent and treasure (some for the past eleven years!) Together, we made so much happen! In October we witnessed the opening of Gwinnett Medical-Lawrenceville’s state-of-the-art Breast Center. TSOG fundraising has supported this effort for the past two years. To see this incredible facility that allows more women access to the very best medical care is a tribute to what a community can achieve with a shared mission. Together, we made it happen! Our partnership with the American Cancer Society’s Patient Navigator Program continues. In the past year, 238 women were assisted on their cancer survival journey with breast cancer handbooks, service referrals, transportation, emotional support and resources for paying bills. The most recent ACS survey found that 100% of those surveyed felt the Navigator Program had helped them cope with fear, overcome obstacles, and improved their quality of life during treat-ment. Together, we made it happen! Our Event Kit enables TSOG to offer anyone around the country an opportunity to host a Vol-leyFest, SwingFest or RunFest event with the support of a Personal Advisor under the TSOG 501(c)3 umbrella. We have taken the guesswork out of planning a successful, fun event and made it available to every community. 1. GWI44ETT MEDICAL CE4TER FOU4DATIO4

Gwinnett Medical Center’s mission is to offer a full range of preventative, diagnostic,

treatment and rehabilitative services in a holistic manner. GMC focuses on patients by

delivering innovative services of superior quality at the best value, by fostering continu-

ous improvement in everything they do. The Sport of Giving has been an integral part of

this. Our donation will go toward funding in full (and/or partially) the following items

that will benefit patients and family members of Gwinnett Medical Center community:

Ultrasound Machines for the Gwinnett Breast Center

Mammography Pads

Breast Cancer Pillows

Breast Cancer Treatment Handbooks

Breast Cancer Support Partner Handbook

The Breast Cancer Treatment Handbooks are provided, at no charge, for all breast can-

cer patients and their families at Gwinnett Medical Center. “Your Breast Cancer Hand-

book” is a wonderful reference for women diagnosed with breast cancer by helping un-

derstand the disease, treatments, emotions and recovery process.

Bears Best/Edinburgh, Hamilton Mill, St Ives, Summit Chase, and

TPC Sugarloaf chose GMCF to receive all or a portion on their raised funds.


2. 4ORTHSIDE HOSPITAL-FORSYTH

The funds donated to 4H-Forsyth will help provide the latest, state-of-the-art technology, and equip-

ment and patient education/support services to enhance Breast Care Center services at 4orthside

Hospital-Forsyth. Currently, there are two digital mammography machines at 4orthside Forsyth’s

Breast Care Center that provide 12,600 digital mammograms annually. A third digital mammogra-

phy machine will significantly decrease patient wait time and increase our capacity to provide more

than 20,000 digital mammograms annually for the Forsyth community. The patient schedule is re-

viewed daily to ensure that patients who require a diagnostic exam can be seen the same day or the

following day, if preferred. This sometimes requires the routine screening mammography patients to

wait longer for their appointment if scheduled appointment times need to be designated for diagnos-

tic exams instead of screening exams. Over the past three months, the first available screening mam-

mography appointments have been on average 20 business days out. A third digital mammography

machine will shorten the wait time for a screening mammogram appointment.

Our funds will also supply Breast Cancer Treatment Handbooks that are provided, at no charge, for

all breast cancer patients and their families at 4orthside Hospital-Forsyth. “Your Breast Cancer

Handbook” is a wonderful reference for women diagnosed with breast cancer by helping understand

the disease, treatments, emotions and recovery process.

3. AMERICA4 CA4CER SOCIETY PATIE4T

4AVIGATOR PROGRAM

The funds donated to ACS’s Patient 4avigator Program will be utilized to help fund the

annual commitment for the position of the ACS Patient 4avigator at Gwinnett Medical

Center who works with cancer patients at the moment of diagnoses as they begin their

cancer journey. The program is a newly designed and implemented proactive strategy to

reach out to and help cancer patients, family members and caregivers in the hospital set-

ting and beyond. The navigator seeks out patients who need and want assistance rather

than hoping they will contact them.

The objectives are to help cancer patients, family members and caregivers navigate the

various systems and demands encountered during the cancer experience. They include:

Providing valuable information on cancer and links to needed programs and resources

Generating demand for ACS services among those patients not typically reached

Improving medical outcomes and enhancing the quality of life

for those reached and assisted.

Did you know that very few hospitals around the coun-

try have a patient navigator program? The only way a

hospital can support this program is to have it under-

written by people like you!

Laurel Springs and The River Club chose to fund the American Cancer Society Patient

4avigator Program for Gwinnett Medical Center as their beneficiary.

4. THE YOU4G WOME4’S BREAST

CA4CER PROGRAM (YWBCP)

YWBCP located at the Siteman Cancer Center began in 2001. Siteman Can-

cer Center partners with young breast cancer survivors (under the age of 44)

to implement strategies that meet the age-relevant needs of their patients.

Breast cancer is a different disease for these women- typically more aggres-

sive A4D more deadly – and yet, there is little funding available for research

and support for this age group. The YWBCP offers support and education

programs, conducts research focused on early onset breast cancer, and raises

awareness regarding the unique issues facing young women diagnosed with

the disease. Working together, we believe positive change is possible.

“4ational”? 4ow anyone with a sporting passion can

raise funds to support the care and prevention of women’s

cancer in THEIR community using our “TSOG” event

kit.

The Club at Chesterfield in Chesterfield, Missouri chose to fund some of the programs

that The Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program offer at the Siteman Cancer Center as

the beneficiary of their raised funds.


5.TUR4I4GPOI4T WOME4’S HEALTHCARE

TurningPoint improves quality of life for women with breast cancer by pro-

viding, promoting and advocating evidence-based, specialized rehabilitation.

Women face staggering physical and psychosocial challenges during and af-

ter breast cancer treatment.

TurningPoint provides comprehensive breast cancer rehabilitation, including

physical therapy, exercise, massage therapy, and nutritional counseling.

Awareness of these issues is increased through TurningPoint's breast cancer

survivorship education programs that reach thousands of community mem-

bers and healthcare providers each year.

Our funds will help assist the TurningPoint organization to serve as many

women as possible, and help break the barriers to care for these patients by

providing financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured women. Turn-

ingPoint Women's Healthcare walks beside women on their breast cancer

journey and is an integral part of their return to full quality of life.

TurningPoint Women’s Healthcare provides care for

over 300 new women with breast cancer each year.

47% of them need financial assistance for their care.

We are honored to be able to

Bear’s Best / Edinburgh hosts a

Ladies VolleyFest, Co-Ed SwingFest

and Wine Tasting

2011 proved to be a very successful year for Edinburgh’s 3rd annual The Sport of Giving Events. The Pink Party was held at the resident’s clubhouse on 9/30, to kick off all the fun. A leisurely evening of conversation, drinks, and dessert provided by our very own Pink Helpers and Fresh Market. October 1 was a bit windy for SwingFest, but the sun did its best to make it an enjoyable afternoon of golf. It was a great event for men, women and kids! A Silent Auction, Raffle and awards ended the beautiful day on the course at Bear’s Best. October 18 and 19 brought the third annual VolleyFest to the courts of Edinburgh. Six courts were filled with women playing for the cause. Both days started with an array of breakfast items for all compliments of our Pink Helpers while everyone shopped the silent auction and raffle items. Chick-fil-a and Publix Supermarket (McGinnis Ferry) provided a courtside lunch on Tuesday. Wednesday’s rain (and lots of it!) was not about to dampen our spirits. We had yummy breakfast treats then spent the morning buying more and more raffle items. With more time on our hands we could thoroughly review the silent auction items. Each passing minute found bidders frantically trying to outdo each other. Our competitive group invented a new category of fundraising—ShopFest! All for a great cause! Who says you can’t have fun at a tennis tournament in the rain? One of our original sponsors, Ippolitos, spoiled us with a buffet luncheon served in their private room for our Finale Lunch-eon. After a huge thank you to all and an informational speech on Ovarian Cancer, our breast cancer survivor speaker, Donna DiNapoli was introduced. She shared her amazing story and inspired all of us. The second annual WineFest completed our events. We expanded to include vodka & beer tasting. AllGood Distributors, Eagle Rock Distributors, Holy Mackerel Beers and The Atlantan Magazine were generous with spir-ited donations. Bear’s Best provided outstanding appetizers & excellent service for our 62 tasters. Silent Auction items kept things lively. Melissa Traylor from Ohio was our Guest of Honor for the evening. Melissa, a 25 year old, is currently battling Stage II breast cancer. What an inspiration she is for early detection at any age. All events were held in memory of Jean Miles, our guest of honor from last year. Jean passed at the age of 41, November 13, 2010. Her husband and three daughters survive her. Jean, we will never stop trying to make strides in the cancer fighting community in your honor.

It is only with the amazing effort of all volunteers, participants and sponsors that Edinburgh’s TSOG Event

reached an all-time high, over $13,000! Edinburgh’s proceeds support Gwinnett Medical Center Lawrenceville’s

Women’s Breast Center. Plans are already underway for 2012 events. Join us!


Club at Chesterfield hosts it’s Second

Ladies VolleyFest

Over the course of a few hours in mid-October,

85 participants at a round-robin tennis tourna-

ment, with a silent auction, raffle and luncheon

raised over $14,000 to help fight breast cancer.

In its second year in St. Louis, VolleyFest

raised $14,657 to benefit the Young Women’s

Breast Cancer Program at Siteman Cancer

Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Wash-

ington University School of Medicine, accord-

ing to co-chair Roz Perea. “The amount col-

lected marks a 20-percent increase over that

raised at the inaugural VolleyFest event in

2010,” she said.

According to co-chair, Dee Wharton, “One

hundred percent of the auction proceeds go di-

rectly to the YWBCP, which provides support

and education programs, conducts research fo-

cused on early onset breast cancer, and raises

awareness of the issues facing women under 40

who are diagnosed with what is typically the

most invasive form of the disease.”

The October 19th event was held at Doubletree

Hotel’s The Club at Chesterfield. It was obvi-

ous at the Finale Luncheon that the commu-

nity participation and support will make this a

very popular annual event!

Hamilton Mill hosts a

Pink Party and Ladies VolleyFest

This year was Hamilton Mills sixth

year to host The Sport of Giving, Vol-

leyFest. We began with the generous

support of Pickron Orthodontics and

because of their continued backing

have been able to exceed our goals

through the years. We kicked off 2011

with a Pink Party at Dos Copas Restau-

rant. The owner, Paul Dalrymple, pro-

vided us with a live band, lots of "Pink

Drink" and food specials and even

matched our ticket sales with a dona-

tion.We also had two fun filled days of

tennis and topped it off with a golf out-

ing.The generous support of local res-

taurants and vendors have made our

event a great success.We also have

many wonderful volunteers who pro-

vide us with their specialties from fund

raising to flower arranging! Hamilton

Mill is a wonderful community that al-

ways comes together for a great cause.

We participate each year in this be-

cause all of us have been touched by

breast cancer and are inspired by our

friends and family to find the cure in

our lifetime, educate and support those

that are fighting it, and provide lo-

cal breast health centers that will

make all of us in our busy schedules to

take time to take care of ourselves!

Laurel Springs hosts a

Ladies VolleyFest

Laurel Springs hosted its 9th Volley-

Fest in 4ovember this year. All previ-

ous events have been held in May. The

change of dates worked out really well.

4ot only did we have a full house of la-

dies playing tennis; we also had a

“Market Day” with local businesses

represented during the first day of our

event. There was lots of tennis and

shopping going!

We ended the festivities with our Finale

Luncheon and “never to be outdone”

raffle. We were all so inspired over the

2 days — we all went home knowing

that we were making a difference now

and forever in our community.

This years beneficiary was 4orthside-

Forsyth Hospital Women’s Pavilion

and the American Cancer Society’s Pa-

tient 4avigator Program.

St. Ives hosts a

Ladies VolleyFest and Mixed VolleyFest

The players in the seventh annual VolleyFest Tennis Tournament

at St. Ives enjoyed wonderful weather, great tennis and helped

raise much needed funds for two local breast cancer programs.

Our 2011 proceeds benefited Gwinnett Medical Center — for the

purchase of breast cancer treatment handbooks and Turning

Point Women’s Healthcare — in support of their ongoing efforts

to help women with breast cancer. Mary Margaret Thomas, a

patient at Turning Point, joined us at our Finale Luncheon and

shared her experience with us. Jill Binkley, founder and execu-

tive director of Turning Point was on hand to help us celebrate

all the good work being done with The Sport of Giving dona-

tions.

Event Chair, Janet Cross would like extend a thank you to the

volunteers who helped make this event such a success:

The River Club hosts a

Ladies SwingFest, Mixed & Kids VolleyFest

The River Club kicked of it’s 2011 Sport of Giving festivities by holding it’s 3rd annual Swingfest

on June 22. Once again, the ladies that participated never cease to amaze us with their commit-

ment to ensuring that this event continues to be a successful “FU4”raiser each year! The theme

this year was, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Again! And, they did!

The Swingfest tournament began bright and early with a light breakfast and shotgun start. After

the tournament play, a luncheon was held at the club to celebrate the winners, “non-winners”,

raffle winners, auction items and listen to a very special guest speaker whom The Sport of Giving

directly impacted and in turn has touched of our lives. We had the privilege of hearing from survi-

vor, Dr. Hutchinson who reads the mammography films. What a privilege it was to share these in-

credible ladies life stories and enjoy the day with the gracious golfers who came together for

women’s cancer care and prevention in our community. Once again, the monies raised at The

River Club events went to the ACS Patient 4avigator program at Gwinnett Medical Center.

We continued the festivities by holding our 6th Volleyfest on a Saturday afternoon in 4ovember.

This year’s tournament was “4acho” average tennis tournament with its fiesta theme. We

changed the format to a family style play of all ages. We held a parent/child round robin and then

proceeded to a mixed format. We even had the Chick-fil-A cow come out and play with us!

Once the tournament play was over and the champions were crowned, we continued to celebrate

into the night with a fiesta Mexican dinner, margaritas, head to toe auction, silent auction and

cried tears of joy to be blessed once again by a very special speaker and breast cancer survivor,

Stacy DeRogotis. She reminded us once again that the journey of life’s road is made easier with

community, friends and family – they are the treasures we hold. We tip our sombrero to each of

our participants, volunteers, sponsors and most of all to everyone that cancer has affected.


TPC Sugarloaf hosts a

Ladies VolleyFest, Ladies SwingFest

The Sport of Giving in TPC Sugarloaf began with the 3rd annual SwingFest Ladies 18 Hole Invitational golf tour-

nament on September 27. The tournament theme of “Colors of Hope” featured awareness colors of Pink for

Breast Cancer, Teal for Ovarian Cancer and Lavender the all-cancer color. We were blessed with perfect

weather to golf, and 48 ladies, sporting their colors, enjoyed the fun and fellowship of the sport and, afterwards,

the “Colors of Hope” beautiful Finale Luncheon. We were brought to tears and laughter from the testimony of

a courageous neighbor and her journey surviving breast cancer. Dr. David Whiteman spoke about how we

really were making a difference in the community hospital care; and he surprised us with one of his patients-

straight from his office- to tell her story of her breast cancer battle using the facilities TPC Sport of Giving raises

funds for. Players and guests alike remarked that the 2011 SwingFest “was the best yet”!

The 11th Annual TPC VolleyFest began on October 28th at our Pairings Party. “Harvest of Hope” was the theme

for this fall event, and the creative decorating committee showcased silver pumpkins with lavender ribbons,

“VolleyFest” scarecrow girls, and got everyone in the “Harvest of Hope” mood. We got together for food and

“harvest punch” and learned who our teammates would be for our two-day event. 40 participants played over

two stunningly gorgeous days on October 31st and 4ovember 2nd. During the event, players could purchase raf-

fle tickets for a chance to win many exciting items. There were also silent auction items, which included beauti-

ful baskets donated by TPC Sugarloaf tennis teams. We concluded with a lovely luncheon and inspiring speaker

who brought with her the message that ladies should know their family history, and talk to her doctor about re-

ceiving mammograms beginning at 40.

We are very proud to have raised over $29,000 for the new Breast Health Center at Gwinnett Medical Center

earmarked for the purchase an Ultrasound machine and MammoPads. We dedicate the 2011 SwingFest and

VolleyFest events to the memory of Lori Van Matre. A young mother, VolleyFest sponsor/volunteer/player that

fought her breast cancer with determination and infectious positive spirit. It’s because of women like Lori that

make us determined to be involved. We also dedicated SwingFest to the memory of Jan Dennis - tennis coach,

player and college golf athlete who succumbed to Ovarian cancer after a 3 year courageous battle – a cancer

where research is needed to find procedures for earlier detection - a Sport of Giving goal for the future.
