REtURNING StAtIStICAL LEAdERSRagin’ Cajuns BaseBall 2011 PReview In 2010 Louisiana’s remarkable second half run returned the squad to the upper echelon of the Sun Belt Conference for the first time since 2007 and resulted in an NCAA Regionals appearance. It’s hard to imagine a way possible to top the excitement of that second half run, but the 2011 version of the Ragin’ Cajuns appears to have the “tools” to be able to create their own magic. The challenge this season is to give Louisiana its first-ever, back-to-back Sun Belt Conference titles. UL was in the same position in 2005 and 2007, but finished second and fifth, respectively. The current Cajuns squad is reminiscent of the 2005 championship team that returned with a lot of veterans in 2006. This year, Louisiana features a veteran squad in both position players and pitching staff. UL returns five position starters and two-thirds of its weekend pitching rotation. Head coach Tony Robichaux welcomed 16 letterwinners and 15 newcomers at the start of preseason practice. The fall practice session yielded quality performances from several newcomers indicating quality depth to support the Cajuns veterans. UL must replace three key elements in order to stay atop the Sun Belt – victories and strikeouts leader Zach Osborne, catcher and two-time RBI leader Chad Keefer plus defensive stalwart Justin Robichaux at first base. T.J. Geith (6-2, 4.67 ERA) and Taylor Hubbell (4-4, 4.42 ERA) are the two returning starters in the pitching rotation. New Orleans transfer Joe Zimmermann, the ace of the Privateers staff the past two seasons, is expected to complete the rotation. Michael Cook is back for his senior season and should serve as the Cajuns’ main mid-week pitching option. The entire bullpen – with the exception of Dayton Marze – is back. Joey Satriano (24 appearances, five saves) and Ryland Parker (15 appearances, .167 opponent average) are the top returners. Hitting-wise, the Cajuns return four of the top five players in batting average, hits and RBI. In the infield, Jordan Poirrier returns at second base. Nearly half of his hits in 2010 went for extra bases and he figures to be a key run producer again. Greg Fontenot (shortstop) and Tyler Frederick (third base) proved to be valuable assets defensively at their positions and return to shore up the left side of the infield. Alex Fuselier and Matt Goulas are the returning starters in the outfield. Fuselier led UL with 20 steals last season and Goulas posted 21 multiple-hit games. UNO transfer Mike Petello is expected to replace Kyle Olasin in center field and he’ll add power to the lineup (13 HR in 2010 at UNO) which should replace the production lost from Keefer. The Cajuns have plenty of speed and expect to utilize it again this season (had 101 steals in ’10). Fuselier (20), Brian Bowman (17) and Goulas (14) and will be the main culprits in stolen bases. The schedule features an even balance between home and road games (28 apiece). Louisiana is scheduled for a trip to San Francisco March 11-13 to participate in a tournament, hosted by Cal, at AT&T Park, home of the defending world champion San Francisco Giants.

“THE TIGUE” > HOME OF THE CAJUNS Opponents fear it; the Ragin’ Cajuns call it home. M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field, one of Louisiana’s largest and most impressive baseball facilities, has been the home of Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns since 1978. In 33 seasons, the Cajuns are an impressive 733-282-2. Current head coach Tony Robichaux has guided his club to 341 wins in 16 seasons at the “Tigue”. Last season, the Ragin’ Cajuns posted their 15th-straight winning season at home with a 23-10 record at “The Tigue”. “We have one of the finest baseball facilities in the state of Louisiana,” Robichaux said. “Our field is named after someone who was here when I played here. He came to all of our games and sat in the dugout. He came to all our practices. “We have a unique facility and with our fan support, we have one of the best home field advantages in the country and it is very tough for our opponents to come here and beat us.” From 1997-2007 the Ragin’ Cajuns won 20 or more games at “The Tigue” 10 times in 11 seasons. The facility has hosted 1,017 baseball games, reaching game No. 1,000 on March 26, 2010. As the facility nears the midpoint of its fourth decade another milestone is near. UL is 57,652 fans shy of seeing the all-time attendance at “The Tigue” reach 1 million. Since 1999, UL has consistently ranked in the Top 50 nationally in total and average home attendance. During the Cajuns’ 2000 World Series run, Louisiana ranked 26th in total home attendance. The 2003 season saw a record 70,267 enter “The Tigue”. In 2010, the Cajuns were 32nd in average home attendance at 1,896 marking the 11th consecutive season with a 1,000-plus average. Moore Field was dedicated March 31, 1979, in honor of the Moore Family. Moore Field officially became known as M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field when the Cajuns opened their 1995 season against Maine on March 3, 1995 - also marking the home debut of current Ragin’ Cajuns skipper Tony Robichaux. The late Marion Lartigue Moore, Jr. and his wife, the late Catherine Moore, touched thousands of lives with their volunteer work at the University and throughout Acadiana. “Tigue” Moore, known as “Mr. Baseball” in Acadiana, was respected throughout the nation for his tireless work in promoting the game. He won the Roberto Clemente Humanitarian Award in 1975. “The Tigue” received its most visible upgrade in January 2010 when a ProGrass Synthetic Turf System was installed. The only dirt now is on the pitcher’s mound. The base paths and warning track – normally dirt or cinder – are a

different color and different consistency of turf. Under Tony Robichaux’s guidance the facility has received several upgrades: a new eight-foot-high aluminum outfield wall, a 71-foot state-of-the-art scoreboard, netting behind home plate was replaced, a brick backstop installed, addition of chairbacks in the box seats and grandstand areas, field-level boxes down the foul lines, new and enlarged bleachers down the basepaths and construction of Lourde’s Park directly behind the first-base bleachers which is capable of hosting pre-and post-game parties. These additions make Moore Field one of the finest baseball facilities in the state. Moore Field’s other features include the H.O. Roy Room, which houses the Ragin’ Cajuns gift shop, a 4,000 square-foot locker room facility, five batting cages down the right-field lines and lights for night games. “The Tigue” was the site of the 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2008 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Last season it was announced that the facility will host the 2013 SBC Tournament. It has also played host to the Silver Bullets Women’s professional team twice and the Louisiana High School championship games and the LHSAA All-Star game in 1997. The facility was once home to the Lafayette Bayou Bullfrogs of the Texas-Louisiana Independent League from 1998-2000. Moore Field has been the sight of some of the greatest seasons in Cajuns baseball history, as well as several milestones. In 2009, the Cajuns recorded 700th win at “The Tigue” on March 20 vs. UALR. The 2008 season saw head coach Tony Robichaux earn his 300th victory at Moore Field with a 4-2 win over New Orleans on May 15. On March 17, 2003, Robichaux won his 292nd game as the Cajuns’ skipper, passing Mike Boulanger for the school record. A year earlier, on March 2, 2002, Moore Field was the site of Robichaux’s 500th career win as a head coach. The Cajuns celebrated their 500th victory with a 4-1 win over Oklahoma on February 26, 2000. In 2000, the Cajuns enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in Moore Field history. During that time, the squad set a new school record with a .909 winning percentage after posting a 30-3 record. In addition, a then-school-record 46,575 fans walked through the front gate. Included were 14,472 alone during the 2000 NCAA Regional at Lafayette. Today that remains the lone NCAA postseason event “The Tigue” has hosted.

Louisiana head coach Tony Robichaux, one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Division I history to reach 500 career victories, has been at the helm of the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball program – which is arguably one of the best in the South – since 1995. Robichaux launched his head coaching career in 1987 at McNeese State. Now in his third decade as a Division I head coach, Robichaux reached career milestone victory No. 500 with a 12-5 win over Texas-Pan American on March 2, 2002, making him one of only eight coaches in NCAA history to achieve the milestone before his 41st birthday. The other names on the list include: Ron Fraser (Miami), Mark Marquess (Stanford), Jim Morris (Miami), Ron Polk (Mississippi State), Danny Price (FIU), Bobby Winkles (Arizona State) and Pat Murphy (Arizona State). Entering the 2000 season, Robichaux was the only head coach younger than 41 years of age with at least 400 career victories. In 2001, Robichaux was listed by Baseball America as one of the top 10 coaches of a mid-major program in the nation, who were younger than 40 years of age. In the 2009 regular season finale at New Orleans, he earned his 800th career victory, joining an elite list of just 28 active NCAA Division I coaches with 800 or more lifetime wins. “All of my wins come from two mid-major programs, and that’s something to be proud of,” Robichaux said. “But what’s important to me is that the universities get the credit. So many of my assistant coaches and players got me to where I am.” Last season, Robichaux guided Louisiana to one of the most remarkable second half runs in recent memory, finishing the 2010 regular season with a 23-4 mark which included a 17-1 record in Sun Belt play that vaulted the Cajuns to a Sun Belt Conference championship.

A Winning Tradition Robichaux has guided Louisiana to eight NCAA Regional appearances, two NCAA Super Regional appearances and the 2000 College World Series. His teams have also clinched four Sun Belt Conference regular season crowns and one Sun Belt Conference Tournament title. On March 17, 2003, Robichaux became UL’s all-time winningest coach when the Cajuns defeated Illinois-Chicago 7-1 at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

In 2000, Robichaux guided one of the best Cajuns baseball teams in school history to arguably the school’s most memorable season. UL swept through the NCAA Regional at Lafayette and took two out of three at then-No. 1 seed South Carolina to advance to the NCAA College World Series for the first time in both school and Sun Belt Conference history. In Omaha, the Cajuns tied a CWS record by a first-time participant with two wins and took a thrilling 5-4 victory in the bottom of the ninth over Clemson. With their 2-2 record, the Ragin’ Cajuns tied for third at the College World Series and finished the season ranked fourth nationally. The Road to Omaha After leading his Cajuns squads to their first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular season and conference tournament championships during the 1997 and 1998 seasons, respectively, Robichaux took his team in 1999 where no other squad had ever gone – the NCAA Super Regionals. There his team defeated then-No. 1 ranked Rice in the first game, and was one win from a trip to the CWS – a trip they would later make in 2000. In 1998, Robichaux guided the Cajuns to the Spectronics Sun Belt Conference Tournament title along with 39 wins. In 1997, Robichaux, the Sun Belt Conference and Louisiana Coach of the Year, led the Cajuns to a No. 15 ranking in the Baseball America poll on April 14 and their first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular season championship. The success was welcomed as Robichaux’s first two seasons at UL (1995 and 1996) resulted in losing seasons as a result of the program recovering from NCAA sanctions handed down after the 1994 campaign prior to his arrival.

Since Omaha In 2002 the Ragin’ Cajuns pushed LSU to the brink of elmination in the NCAA Regional at Baton Rouge. With a veteran team in 2005, UL claimed the Sun Belt regular season championship and made an appearance in the NCAA New Orleans Regional. In 2007, UL finished 45-17, claiming its second league championship in a three-season span and 11th NCAA Regional appearance in school history. With a strong second half run in 2010, Louisiana returned to the upper echelon of the Sun Belt for the first time since 2007 and advanced to an NCAA Regional (12th appearance in school history). The Cajuns won 17 of their final 18 SBC games to pick up the program’s third league title in six years. A Driving Force During his tenure at UL, “Tigue” Moore Field has seen many improvments: a new eight-foot-high aluminum outfield wall, a 71-foot state-of-the-art scoreboard, netting behind home plate was replaced, a brick backstop installed, addition of chairbacks in the box seats and grandstand areas, field-level boxes down the foul lines, new and enlarged bleachers down the basepaths and construction of Lourde’s Park behind the first-base bleachers. In 2010, the playing surface at Moore Field was replaced with an artificial turf system installed by ProGrass. Robichaux has an active membership with the United Way as their Acadiana spokesman. He is dedicated to giving back to the community, with frequent visits to youngsters at the Children’s Hospital in Houston, as well as other various civic activities in Lafayette and throughout Acadiana.

Prior to Louisiana Before arriving at UL in 1995, Robichaux served as head coach of McNeese State for eight seasons, where he led the Cowboys to a combined 263-177 record, including a school-record 41 wins in his last season there. Under Robichaux, MSU hurlers ranked in the top six in the nation in ERA three times during a five-year span. In 1990, Cowboy pitchers finished second in the nation in ERA.

Off the Field Robichaux received his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from McNeese State in 1986. He is married to the former Colleen Dailey of Iota, and they have three children - Ashley, Justin and Austin. They also have two grandchildren, Lon Paul and Ava Grace, children of Ashley and her husband Lon Moody. Robichaux’s son Justin played for the Ragin’ Cajuns from 2007-10. The family lives in Crowley.

Anthony Babineaux has been a member of the Ragin’ Cajuns coaching staff since 1995. Since the 2009 season he has served as head assistant coach and third base coach. He is in charge of the Cajuns’ baserunning and also works with the offense, assists in recruiting and coordinates travel and scheduling. During his first year with the offense, the 2009 Cajuns increased their batting average by 30 points. Runs scored, doubles, triples, RBI, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage also increased. In 2010, the Cajuns stole 101 bases which was one off the Sun Belt lead and most since 2002. UL had four players with double digit stolen bases – also the highest since 2002. Alex Fuselier (20), Kyle Olasin (19) and Brian Bowman (17) finished in the Sun Belt’s Top 10 in stolen bases. Along with former assistant coach John Szefc and the rest of the Cajuns staff, their 2004-05 signing class was ranked 55th in the nation and tops in the Sun Belt Conference by Collegiate Baseball. In 2007, Baseball America ranked their signing class tops in the Lower Midwest Region and SBC.

A Dozen and Counting Babineaux’s coaching career began as a student assistant in 1995 – Tony Robichaux’s first year at UL. In 1996, he served as volunteer assistant and was appointed assistant coach in 1997. Working with the infielders and hitters, he has helped guide UL to three of the top four single-season batting average totals in school history. Along the way, the Cajuns recorded their first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships, appeared in eight NCAA Regionals, advanced to two NCAA Super Regionals and the 2000 College World Series. Since 2001, Babineaux has helped the Cajuns claim conference championships in 2005, 2007 and 2010 and earn regional bids in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010.

American Legion From 1990-2000, Babineaux coached a Third District West American Legion team and guided his squads to five titles (1993, 1997-2000), seven regional appearances (1990, 1993, 1996-2000) and two state tournaments (1998 & 1999). In 1998, he guided his squad to a state title, Midwest Regional appearance and fell just two games short of a spot in the American Legion National World Series.

Off the Field Babineaux is a 1995 graduate of UL, earning a degree in health and physical education. He came to UL in 1990 from Carencro High School. He was a two-time all-district and all-parish selection at CHS. He gained all-state and all-district honors with his talent on the trumpet and has played the “Star Spangled Banner” both at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field and Lamson Park. Babineaux is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and has served as guest speaker at many clinics around Louisiana. Babineaux is married to former UL softball star Joni Podhorez of Tucker, Ga. The couple has two daughters, Brooklyn and Sydney. They reside in Lafayette.

Mike Trahan became an assistant coach with the Ragin’ Cajuns in the 2009 season. Trahan coaches the outfield and assists with the hitters in addition to leading the Cajuns’ recruiting efforts.

Prior to Louisiana Trahan spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at La.-Monroe. He also served as the Warhawks’ recruiting coordinator. In his first year, the Warhawks set the school home run record with 70, passing the previous mark of 62 set in 1986.

In his second year, the offense rewrote the record books on the way to a Sun Belt regular season title. They again set the record in home runs (93), adding new bests in RBI, total hits (697), doubles (139) and team batting average (.329). Dexter Fontenot was recognized as National Player of the Week and Ben Soignier finished the year on multiple All-American teams.

Three Warhawks hitters were drafted during Trahan’s tenure – Bo Bowman, Kyle Suire and Ben Soignier.

Trahan joined the La.-Monroe staff after five seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, McNeese State. He helped guide the Cowboys to a Southland Conference Tournament title in 2003, as well as a berth in the NCAA Regional at Rice. Several recruiting classes were recognized by Baseball America during his tenure as well.

MSU had two freshmen All-Americans during Trahan’s tenure: Taylor Faul and Bryan Cartie. Trahan also coached Dooley Prince, the 2003 SLC Freshman of the Year.

Trahan coached seven McNeese players selected in the MLB draft, including 2005 first-round pick Jacob Marceaux (29th overall, Florida Marlins). In 2003, shortstop Lance Dawkins was selected in the 20th round by the Chicago Cubs.

Brooks Badeaux joined the Ragin’ Cajuns coaching staff in July 2009 as the volunteer assistant. He works with the infielders and serves as first base coach.

Prior to Louisiana After his standout career at Teurlings

Catholic, Badeaux played collegiate baseball at Florida State from 1995-98. He was the first freshman shortstop to start opening day and he made three trips to the College World Series with the Seminoles.

He hit .299 with 280 hits in 254 games for the Seminoles and earned All-ACC, Academic All-ACC and All-Atlantic Region honors.

Following his career at FSU, Badeaux began his pro baseball career in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization in which he spent nine seasons (1998-2005, 2007).

After a stint in the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2006, Badeaux returned to the Rays in 2007 before retiring. He hit .264 with 832 career hits over 10 seasons in the minors, playing shortstop, second base, third base and outfield.

Badeaux participated with Team USA in the 1995 World University Games and was a member of the 2005 World Cup Team.

He served as an assistant coach at Teurlings Catholic HS from 2002-03 and in 2005 was an assistant at Comeaux High School – both Lafayette Parish high schools.

Badeaux fits the mold of Robichaux’s strong belief in community service. He has spent several years volunteering in numerous baseball camps and clinics, assisting youth league teams with organizing and implementing practice plans and delivering motivational speeches throughout the United States regarding athletics, goals, careers and experiences.

Off the Field Presently, he serves as the director of Badeaux’s One-on-One Baseball and the

All-American Middle Infield Camp. In 2008, he directed “The Perfect Game” Charity Baseball Camp designed to raise funds for a local family in need.

A 2007 graduate of Florida State with a bachelor’s of science in social sciences, he is married to the former Ramy Sere’ – a UL graduate – and they have one son, Brant, and a daughter, Finley. His father (Bobby Badeaux) and father-in-law (Steve Sere’) both played baseball for the Cajuns.

Chris Domingue has been with the Ragin’ Cajuns since 2003, overseeing academic performance. In 2008, he was named Director of Baseball Operations. In addition to academics, he runs each of Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball camps.

Academics Recently, academic reform has brought much attention to college athletics. In the spring of 2003, Tony Robichaux became proactive by bringing on board Domingue to assist his athletes academically and Domingue’s academic program is working. Prior to Domingue arriving, the team’s overall grade point average was a 2.4. In the fall of 2007, the team’s grade point average rose above the 3.0 mark. In the 2005 fall semester, the Cajuns had 29 players that had a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Of those players,13 recorded 3.5 GPAs or better. Two players recieved 4.0 grade point averages for the fall semester. During the 2006 season, Domingue once again helped the baseball team to academic success. In 2006, 22 baseball players were named on the All-Sun Belt academic list, including seven players who were named to the SBC Commissioner’s list. Lafayette’s Daily Advertiser recognizes Domingue’s Academic Program as one of the Top 20 reasons to visit the “Tigue.” Recently, UL received the Sun Belt Team Academic Award, given for maintaining the league’s highest team GPA, during the 2007-08 academic year.

American Legion From 1990-2000, Domingue coached a Third District West American Legion team and guided his squads to five league titles (1993, 1997-2000), seven regional appearances (1990, 1993, 1996-2000) and two state tournaments (1998 & 1999). In 1998, Domingue guided his squad to a state championship and Midwest Regional appearance and fell just two games short of a earning spot in the World Series.

Off the Field A firefighter in the city of Lafayette since 1983, Domingue is currently serving as fire captain. He is married to the former Karen Doucet, a 1986 graduate of the University of Louisiana. The couple has two childen, Lauren and Connor. They currently reside in Lafayette. Domingue graduated magna cum laude from LSU-Eunice in 2002.
