Out of the Shadows: The Rise of Women in ArtPART 1 August 23 - December 10PART 2 January 10– May 12, 2012

This two part, six-exhibit presentation of women in art is a multifaceted exploration that goes beyond a highlight tour of notable women artists. Out of the Shadows is an exhibition that examines women as the subject of art, recognizes women as artists, and looks at

the struggles women endured in an effort to be recognized for their talents.

Women have been the subjects of art for more than 30,000 years. Anthropologists, archaeologists, and art historians have studied the function and purpose of female figures in art. However, there is no record as to who the first female artists were, or where and when they worked. In addition, it was not until the mid-20th century that historians took a serious look at the impact women have had on the visual arts.

This series of exhibits will look at the topics of nature/landscapes, abstract/non-representation, figurative/portraiture, textiles, photography, and the decorative arts. In each of these themes, women have been a pivotal part in telling her/history. A number of artists represented in the exhibitions have local connections to Oxford, the Oxford College for Women, the Western College for Women, and Miami University.

Miami Family Weekend Art Sale & Open HouseCome tour our new space, partake of the various demonstrations and hands-on classes, and bring home some fabulous artistic creations.

Where:The brand new Art Center space located in Phillips Hall on Oak Street (in the site of the old pool at the south end of Phillips facing the Goggin Ice Center). Park at the nearby Campus Avenue Garage and join us for the first event at our new location (formerly housed in Rowan Hall).

What:Fine Art created by Miami students, faculty, alumni, and staff. Featuring original handcrafted ceramics, lampwork glass beads & jewelry, fused glass, stained glass, watercolor art, metal art & jewelry, mixed-media jewelry and much more.

Our artists will offer hands-on, drop-in classes in ceramics, jewelry making, and fused glass throughout the weekend where participants can create their own glass jewelry, coasters, wind chimes or ceramic tiles. There will be a modest supply fee for each class. Demonstrations will be running during the weekend as well.

Glam Up! A Global Rhythms Presentation

Global Rhythms is a cauldron of culture, reflecting the best of world music, dance, theatre, costumes, and languages. Its concerts, as varied as the people who inhabit the stage on concert night, weave together a cast of almost 400. On Friday and Saturday nights, September 23 and 24, 2011, two uniquely different productions with diverse musical offerings will be showcased.

On opening night, September 23rd Friday, a team of 300 artists will fill the stage, joined by a range of guest artists: five-time Grammy winning Glen Velez (frame drums), three-time Grammy winning Robin Eubanks (trombone), Grammy winning Eguie Castrillo (Latin percussion), 18 year old sensation Ali Amr (Qanun and Vocals) and 21-year old Tarik Rentissi (Middle Eastern percussion) from Palestine, Victor Mendoza (vibraphone), Ray Vega (trumpet), Broadway artist Jeff Queen (snare drums), Lori Cotler

(vocals), Steve Stuhlbarg (guitar), Irena Bernadsky (Ukrainian mandolin), Maestro Asnawa (Gamelan procession) from Bali.

The refreshing addition of Robin Eubanks, one of the world’s greatest trombone virtuosos, allows Global Rhythms to weave in the Big Jazz Band, conducted by Jeremy Long, premiering pieces of jazz legends, like the Afro-Cuban All Stars. The Choraliers, an 80-member all-female choir conducted by Bill Bausano, will premiere a single of Academy Award winning composer

AR Rahman. A four-member Flamenco team,

led by Humberto Sales, makes their

debut appearance.

Featured the same evening are a Klezmer Ensemble, as well

as a unique quintet that joins strings, piano, and woodwinds to present music from Bollywood. An indoor drum line directed by Alex McIntosh, and an a cappella group, Mergers, conducted by Arjun Chandy, conclude the first night of events. Tan, James Lentini, Chris Tanner, Bill Albin, Jaime Morales Matos, James Olcott will also take the stage.

Saturday night, September 24th, features guest artists Robin Eubanks, Jeff Queen, Ali Amr, Tarik Rentissi, Eguie Castrillo, Victor Mendoza, Maestro Asnawa, Ray Vega, and others, joined by the Collegiate Chorale, a 100-member mixed choir conducted by Jeremy Jones, and the Miami University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ricardo Averbach. They will premiere unique works from Lord of the Rings (musical) and additional music by AR Rahman. Other special guests include Maya and Malavi (two middle-school wonders), Kelsey Harmon, a rising star on vocals, and Flamenco virtuoso Humberto Sales with his four-member team.

A composition promoting world peace, arranged by Arjun Chandy, will be presented by the a cappella group, Mergers. Marion Peraza who graduated from the first batch of the El Sistema system in Venezuela directs a 25-member string ensemble of middle school children that features a tango, while Leon Enneking directs a team of middle school children playing the gyle, premiering a piece from Ghana.

In this performance, special emphasis is laid on costumes. Designers in India are specially tailoring apparel for the event. With support from creative designers Silvie Rothschild and Valeria Naymar, and further assistance from members of the Fasion for Charity at Miami University, a whole new dimension will be brought to the production.

This mosaic of music, color, culture, dance, art, fashion is not complete without a touch of food. On Saturday September 24th night, with support

from the Alumni Association, a tent installed across Hall auditorium will shelter a tasting event of North Indian cuisine. Samples will be served between 6 PM and 7.30 PM to any advance ticket holders for the September 24th evening show.

Miami alumnus Srinivas Krishnan, Founder and Artistic Director of Global Rhythms, directs the shows and management support comes in from Mary Jane Berman, Dorothy Falke, Gene Willeke, and Jacque Rioja Velarde. Production managers are Christine Hartz, Santhosh Jayasankar, and Sean O’Neill. Generous sponsorship is provided by the Center for American & World Cultures, International Visiting Scholar Exchange Fund –Office of International Programs, Parents Fund, School of Fine Arts, Department of Music, Krish and Vicky Joshi Foundation, Gary and Parul Houlahan, Bhairavi Jani, and the Alumni Association.

Global Rhythms, founded in 1997, has showcased performances all around the world and believes in the power of collaboration, communion and sharing for building relationships of trust. The ability of Global Rhythms to transcend forms and straddle worlds, the traditional and the modern, has won it a diverse audience. Global Rhythms supports a “one world” concept and believes that a world of love is ultimately the one we are born to live in. This season’s shows are dedicated to the late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and his student, the late Pandit Madhav Gudi, for their decades of contribution to music. The 80-year old Smt. Thylambal is also honored for her 50 years of service to Music Education.

The City of Oxford and Miami University welcome you to the “Yale of the West”! We hope you enjoyed the scenic drive as you arrived to the quaint red brick streets of historic Oxford. Oxford holds many surprising delights while nestled amongst the farms and parks of Southwest Ohio.

We encourage you to take an hour and spend some time in one or all of our three shopping districts. The major business area fondly recognized as “Uptown”, is located in the historic district of Oxford just one block from the Miami University campus. It is filled with a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants, and antique stores. Oxford boasts more than 50 restaurants providing a variety of American and international food choices. Be a part of Miami tradition and enjoy the Bagel & Deli Shop - a longstanding favorite of Miami students and alumnae. This delightful shop has all kinds of combinations that go deliciously with bagels! Enjoy reading through the over 40 different recipes from the David Letterman, Wam-O, Messy Katie, to the Tanya Harding Club. The popular Oxford Farmers Market Uptown is open every Saturday from May through November and every third Saturday during the months of November through April featuring fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, plus arts and crafts. Or visit the Ball of Oxford, which features not only the most gorgeous of flower arrangements but unique

gifts and toys for all ages. Oxford has a four-screen movie complex within walking distance of the residence halls and features the current movies one hears about right off the latest marketing advertisements.

If a bit of history sounds intriguing, take time to visit the William Holmes McGuffey Museum, the birthplace of the McGuffey Eclectic Reader. The book transformed the American public school curriculum.

With the proximity to the Miami University campus, Oxford offers an abundance of cultural, civic and social activities. There is the Oxford Summer Concert Series held each week in the Uptown Parks. Enjoy the sounds of jazz, blues, modern, rock ‘n roll, bluegrass… There’s the annual UniDiversity Festival featuring a traditional outdoor street festival with entertainment, food, and crafts of the south and central Americas held in the fall.

But even with all of these amenities, your daughter or son’s experience at Miami will be one that she or he never forgets. The camaraderie of friendships, the bonds of fondness for favorite professors, to hear the Men’s Glee Club sing the songs that stay true in their hearts.
