STUDENT REGULATIONSStudents (and parents) are required to familiarize themselves with the fol-lowing regulations, adopted to help make La Salle a more efficient andpleasant community capable of attaining worthwhile goals.

ACADEMIC LIFEACADEMIC PRIORITY: At La Salle, a student’s first responsibility is to his aca-demic career.

ATTENDANCE: There may be days when a student is unable to attendschool. An excused absence is one that is due to illness or family emergency.Contacting a reliable classmate for homework assignments on the night ofthe absence and/or communicating with the teacher at the earliest conve-nient time is expected. Absent students are responsible for missed work.It is important to clarify that outside of illness or emergency, school atten-dance is compulsory. A family vacation does not qualify as an excusedabsence. School holidays and breaks are published well in advance to offerparents an opportunity to plan their vacations at a time that does not inter-fere with attendance policies. Families and their sons cannot expect teach-ers to accommodate missed work/ opportunities for any unexcused absence.Unexcused absences during midterm or final examinations are strictly pro-hibited.Keep in mind that attendance throughout the school year is vital to a stu-dent’s academic success. There is no doubt that the correlation betweenabsences and grades is extraordinary. As a rule of thumb, students who missschool have grades that reflect their gaps in learning. Students should makean effort to be in school daily and on time. Remember, the school’s mainnumber should NOT be used to report any student absence. All attendancematters are expected to be reported to the Attendance Line at 215-233-4140before 8:00AM. A note is required upon returning to school.

CLASS ABSENCE POLICY: Any student who misses 25 or more classes for aone-credit course or 10 classes for a half-credit course will receive an“Incomplete” in the course and be required to do make-up work to success-fully complete the course.

HOMEWORK: Homework is an important part of school life. Written assign-ments should be done completely and accurately in order to derive benefitfrom the assignment. Even if there are no written assignments on a givennight, students will still have studying, reading, and revision of notes. It isstrongly recommended that a student should spend approximately twohours per night on homework, study, and preparation for class.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: La Salle College High School strives to maintain anatmosphere conducive to learning and educational challenge within whicheach student endeavors to embrace a strong sense of academic and person-al integrity and Christian values. Therefore, all forms of plagiarism or cheat-ing are unethical and contrary to the philosophy of La Salle. Studentsengaging in any of these behaviors are subject to a complete loss of creditfor the assignment or test which could result in failure for the marking peri-od or course. Instances of violation of Academic Integrity will be reported to the AssistantPrincipal for Academic Affairs. Repeated violations are subject to disciplinaryaction, suspension, or dismissal. (A full explanation of the policy has beenmailed to each family and is available on the school’s Web site.) Membershipstatus in some student groups requires strict compliance to the Honor Code.Although each case will be reviewed on an individual basis, students in vio-lation of the Honor Code may not expect to participate in La Salle’s NationalHonor Society or Student Council and/or receive academic recognition.

ACADEMIC PROBATION POLICY: Personal academic success throughresponsible decision making is at the heart of La Salle’s educational mission.La Salle College High School is committed to developing each student’s aca-demic potential and expects each student to work to his ability. Any studentwho fails two or more subjects at the end of the First Semester or earns aFirst Semester GPA of less than 1.50 will be placed on Academic Probation forthe Second Semester. A letter from the Assistant Principal of AcademicAffairs will be sent to the parents/guardians of the student notifying themof this matter. Parents/guardians and student will be required to meet withthe appropriate Grade Level Counselor to develop a Plan of Action for thestudent during the first week of the semester. The student’s teacher will con-tribute to the development and follow-through of this plan. The plan willalso include the student being assigned to the Library during his free periodsfor the semester. At the end of this probationary semester, a student’s aca-demic performance will be reviewed. If the student has a GPA of less than

1.50 in the Second Semester while on Academic Probation, his academicgood standing at La Salle will be in serious jeopardy. If a student not on Academic Probation finishes the school year with aSecond Semester GPA of less than 1.50 (and if he remediates any year-endfailures during the summer), he will be allowed to return to La Salle in theFall on the condition of Academic Probation. Such a student’s academic per-formance will be reviewed at the end of the First Semester.Students who are on Academic Probation for two or more consecutivesemesters are in serious jeopardy of not being allowed to return to La SalleCollege High School.

REPORT CARDS: Report cards are issued to the student four times a year.Except for the final report card, each card is a Progress Report which indi-cates how the student is currently doing in each course. The PermanentRecord is made only of the Final Marks in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades, andof the First Semester and Final Marks in the senior (12th) year. The date forthe Parent-Teacher meeting in the fall is listed on the school calendar.Parents are encouraged to speak to the teachers at any time about theirson’s work. Call the school office (215-233-2911) to arrange to speak to ateacher either on the telephone or in person.

GRADING POLICY: La Salle College High School uses the following lettergrading system with numerical equivalents:

LETTER GRADE NUMERICAL RANGE (%) GRADE POINT VALUEA+ 98-100 4.3A 93-97 4.0A- 90-92 3.7B+ 88-89 3.3B 85-87 3.0B- 82-84 2.7C+ 80-81 2.3C 77-79 2.0C- 74-76 1.7D+ 72-73 1.3D 70-71 1.0F <70 0

GRADE POINT AVERAGE: Each letter grade is assigned a grade point value(as above). These grade point values are increased for Honors (.5) andAdvanced Placement (1) courses. Thus, an A, normally worth 4.0 in a regu-lar course, is 4.5 for an Honors course and 5.0 for an Advanced Placementcourse. To find a grade point average (GPA), multiply the grade point valueby the number of credits for the course, add up all those figures to yield agrade point total, and divide that total by the total number of credits thestudent is attempting to earn. The GPA is calculated to the third decimalplace. GPA’s do not include courses, such as Group Advisory, where a studentdoes not earn a letter grade. The following is an example:

COURSE GRADE CREDIT GRADE POINT GRADE POINTVALUE VALUE TOTAL (CV x GPV)

Sacred Scripture B 1.0 3.0 3.0World Literature A+ 1.0 4.3 4.3Economics A- 0.5 3.7 1.85AP Calculus A 1.0 5.0 5.0Internet Appl. C- 0.5 1.7 0.85Honors Physics B 1.0 3.5 3.5American History C+ 1.0 2.3 2.3Phys. Ed/Aquatics A 0.5 4.0 2.0

Grade Point Total ÷ Total Credit Value = Grade Point Average: 22.80 = 3.5086.5

Note: Only final and cumulative GPA’s appear on the transcript.

B. Underclassmen: An underclassman who receives failing grades in courses that total two ormore credits will not be permitted to return to La Salle. If a student fails incourses that total less than two credits, the failures must be removed fromthe transcript in order to continue at La Salle. In make-up work, a studentcan improve his mark by one letter grade.

REMEDIATION POLICY: All final failures must be successfully remediated inorder for an underclassman to return to La Salle in the Fall or in order for aSenior to receive his diploma. Based on the nature of the failed course, theremay be different options for remediation. A meeting with the Registrar ofLa Salle College High School will determine the appropriate remediationplan. Summer school courses in public schools or private schools that areequivalent in scope to the course failed at La Salle may be one such option.Thirty hours of tutoring (for a one-credit course) or fifteen hours of tutoring(for a half-credit course) may be another option. In the case of remediation by tutoring, the tutor must be approved by theAssistant Principal for Academic Affairs and documentation of meetinghours will be required. At the conclusion of the required hours of tutoring, the student will have to demonstrate mastery of the material. At that time, the Registrar of La Salle College High School, in consultation with theinstructor of the failed course, will determine the appropriate means ofassessment. Therewill be a $30.00 fee for the administration and grading of the final assess-ment.An underclassman will not receive his roster of courses for the upcomingschool year (a Senior will not receive his diploma) until remediation is suc-cessfully completed.
