Three-Time Patriot League Regular Season Champions2

Big Expectations for 2012-13American has been selected second in the Patriot League preseason poll, four votes behind 2011-12 Patriot League Champion Navy. Additionally, junior guard Alexis Dobbs, an All-Patriot League First Team performer last year, has been named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

20-20 VisionThe Eagles finished the 2011-12 season with a 23-8 record, marking the sixth time in program history they have reached the 20-win plateau. American’s 23 wins matched the program record set in 1997-98.

Making HistoryAmerican captured its third consecutive Patriot League Regular season title and fourth in the last five years. The Eagles registered the first undefeated conference season in Patriot League history, finishing with a perfect 14-0 mark in league play. The 14-0 record was also the best conference record by a team in program history, breaking the previous mark of 11 which was set on two previous occasions.

Going StreakingThe Eagles won 15 straight games during the 2011-12 season, starting with a 56-43 victory over Colgate to open Patriot League play. The streak was the longest in program history and spanned nearly two months. During the time, American outscored its opponents by an average of nearly nine points a game.

Corkery Making HistoryHead Coach Matt Corkery, the 2012 Patriot League Coach of the Year, has accumulated a 86-39 record in four seasons at the helm at American, and his .688 winning percentage is the best in Patriot League history. Additionally, his .821 winning percentage in conference play (46-10) is also tops in history of the conference. Corkery has now earned conference Coach of the Year accolades in two of the last three seasons, including this year.

Gettin’ DefensiveLast season, American allowed 53.2 points per game, which led the Patriot League and was ranked 15th in the country. The Eagles held its opposition to under 50 points 14 games last season, each of which resulted in victories with the exception of an overtime loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Enjoying the RoadThe Eagles had tremendous success away from home this season, finishing the regular season with a 12-2 record in games played away from home with nine true road victories and two neutral site wins. This matches the program record for most non-home wins, which was also accomplished in 1986-87, 1997-98, and 2010-11.

All-Around Student-AthleteGuard Alexis Dobbs was selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s basketball, becoming AU’s second student-athlete to ever earn the accolades. Dobbs was an All-Patriot League First Team selection on the court and in the classroom, the Biology major carries a 3.8 cumulative grade-point average. Liz Hayes is the only other AU women’s basketball student-athlete to pick up the award as she earned it in back-to-back seasons in 2007 and 2008.

No Freshman JittersGuard Jen Dumiak’s role increased throughout the regular season of her freshman campaign. She became American’s third-leading scorer with 7.1 ppg, including 9.2 ppg in conference play. As a result, she was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team, joining former honorees Edwards (2009), Strack (2009) and Dobbs (2011).

60 is the NumberAmerican is 40-2 in its last 42 games when scoring at least 60 points. Last season, the Eagles finished last year 10-2 when reaching the 60-point mark. At one point, AU had a streak of 30 straight wins when scoring at least 60 during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

Cleaning the GlassAmercan finished the year 13-0 this season when outrebounding its opponent, and going back to 2010-11, the Eagles have won 34 of their last 35 when holding an advantage on the glass (which dates back to the 2009-10 season).

Shoot for the StarsThe Eagles finished 17-1 last season when shooting a higher percent from the field compared to their opponents. Additionally, American was 9-2 when outshooting its competition from three-point range.

A Little Help from Your FriendsA big reason for American’s success last season was the strong play of its bench. The Eagles’ reserves outscored their respective opponent’s bench in 20 games of its 31 games last season with American holding a 16-4 record in these contests.

Ready, Set, Go!When American gets off to a good start, they proved to be a difficult team to beat last year. The Eagles were 20-0 last season in games where they led at halftime.

Record-Setting Pace to 50The win over Brown on December 31 in the 2010-11 season was Head Coach Matt Corkery’s 50th career victory. In his four seasons at the helm at American, Corkery has an 86-39 record, and he became the fastest coach to reach the 50-win milestone in program history. His winning percentage of .688 is the best in Patriot League history.

Three-Time Patriot League Regular Season Champions12

The 2012-13 season will be Matt Corkery’s fifth as the head coach at American University and his eighth overall on the staff. Heading into the 2012-13 campaign, Corkery has accumulated a 86-39 career record at the helm, including a 46-

10 mark in Patriot League play.

In his four seasons, his squads have earned three Patriot League regular season championships, three WNIT berths, two appearances in the Patriot League Championship Game, and he was honored as the Patriot League Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2012. Corkery has coached one Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, one Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, two Patriot League Players of the Year, four Patriot League All-Rookie Team honorees, seven All-Patriot League selections, and 21 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll picks.

Corkery has already etched his place in the Patriot League record books with his .688 career winning percentage, which is best all-time in conference history. Kevin Morris, who coached at Fordham from 1993-95, previously owned the best career winning percentage in Patriot League history with his .678 mark. Additionally, Corkery’s .821 career Patriot League winning percentage is also the best amongst coaches in league history.

Corkery led the Eagles to a historic 2011-12 season where they recorded the first-ever 14-0 Patriot League regular season in conference history. American’s 23-8 overall record matched a program record for most wins in a single season and its 15-game winning streak during the campaign set a new program standard. AU also reached its fourth WNIT in the last five seasons and Corkery earned his second Patriot League Coach of the Year honor in the previous three seasons. Additionally, American won four of the five Patriot League major awards with Corkery’s Coach of the Year, Lisa Strack earning Patriot League Player of the Year honors, Ebony Edwards as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Alexis Dobbs as the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

In 2010-11, the Eagles earned a share of their second straight Patriot League regular season crown with a 10-4 record. AU reached the Patriot League Championship Game

for the second consecutive season after winning at Lehigh, the league’s two-time defending champion, in an overtime thriller in the semifinals. American finished with 22 victories on the season, matching the 2009-10 team for the second-most single-season wins in program history.

The 2009-10 campaign, Corkery’s second as the head coach, was a historic season for the Eagles as they finished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, their best ever conference record to that point. This 13-1 mark earned AU a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. American’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season, and the 22

triumphs were the second-most in school history. As a result, AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth and Corkery was tabbed as the conference’s coach of the year.

In Corkery’s inaugural season of 2008-09, he led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 10-5 non-conference record was the best in program history, and their 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA

Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

In addition to on-the-court success, Corkery has helped bring increased interest to the program. The Eagles have set new attendance record in Bender Arena twice during his tenure, the first time occuring on February 7, 2009, when 1,177 fans saw the Eagles defeat Lehigh, 65-56. A year later on February 13, 2010, 1,291 spectators came out to Bender to watch American roll 82-47 past Colgate.

“We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last three years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.”

Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving as AU’s associate head coach during the 2007-08 campaign, which saw the Eagles earn the program’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship and berth in the WNIT. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach/recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With

The 2012-13 season will be Josh Hutchinson’s third season as an assistant coach. Hutchinson works primarly with the team’s post players and serves as the program’s academic liasion.

In Hutchinson’s two seasons on staff at American, the Eagles have recorded a 45-17 record, including a 24-4 mark in Patriot League play. AU has won the Patriot League regular season title in both of his seasons.

During the 2011-12 campaign, Hutchinson was instrumental in sophomore Sarah Kiely’s 6.3 ppg and 4.4 rpg season, a dramatic increase from her 3.4 ppg and 1.6 rpg a year ago.

In 2010-11, Hutchinson was instrumental in American’s 22-win campaign, which included a share of the Patriot League Regular Season Championship. He worked closely with All-

Patriot League First Team performer Liz Leer throughout. Additionally, Hutchinson helped increase then-sophomore center Stephanie Anya’s production from 1.4 ppg and 2.5 rpg in 2009-10 to 6.0 ppg and 5.4 rpg in the 2010-11 campaign.

Prior to coming to American, Hutchinson served as the head varsity boys coach at Christian Academy of Indiana in New Albany, Ind., for two seasons. In addition to coaching the varsity squad, he supervised the other high school and middle school coaches in the program. Hutchinson also taught English classes at the high school.

From 2004-08, Hutchinson worked as the assistant varsity boys coach at national powerhouse Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md. During his tenure, he helped guide Montrose to numerous top 10 national rankings in the USA TODAY and Fab 50 polls. Hutchinson coached several future collegiate and professional stars, including Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Greivis Vasquez of the Memphis Grizzlies, and American’s Troy Brewer.
