With six letterwinners returning, two gifted newcomers and a very talented lineup, head coach Brian Etzkin and the Vikings have all of the necassary components to get back on top in the Horizon League during the 2012-13 season.

“We still have a really young team with a lot of energy, and if we mature as a team this year we will be in a good spot to win a Horizon League Championship because of everyone’s work ethic,” Etzkin said.

Entering his sophomore season, Jorg van der Vloet will open the year at the No. 1 singles spot for the Vikings, following a 16-win rookie cam-paign.

“Jorg will start off in the No. 1 position for us after working hard over the summer and coming back in shape and more mature on the court. He is one of the best ball strikers on the team and having him in the No. 1 spot this year is like having a new recruit on the team,” Etzkin said.

Matt Kuelker, a two-time All-Horizon League second team honoree, will once again be a mainstay in the top-half of the Viking lineup. Kuelk-er has notched at least 15 wins in each of his seasons at CSU, and brings a wealth of experience to this year’s squad.

“We will be looking for Matt to play high in the lineup all season long, as he is one of the best competitors in the history of Cleveland State tennis. He worked on his weaknesses over the summer and is a better all-court player now, which will help get us back on top in the league,” Etzkin said.

VanMeter, the lone freshman on this year’s squad, comes to CSU as one of the top high school players in the state of Indiana. He will make an immediate impact for the Vikings, earning a spot in the top-half of the lineup to begin the season.

“As a rookie, Joe comes in as a force to be reckoned with. He has an attacking style of game, which lends itself well to college tennis. As he learns the game more and develops, he has the ability to go from a good college player to a great college player,” Etzkin said.

Ali Shabib enters his sophomore season as one of the top return-ers for the Vikings, bringing with him big match experience and a competitive energy.

“Ali will start the season in the middle of the lineup, but could definitely move up as he develops more structure to his game. I’m very excited that we have four solid players that could all play the No. 1 position - this gives us some real depth going into the season,” Etzkin said.

Jonsson comes to Cleveland State after playing one year at Troy University. Although he is new to the Viking lineup, he brings col-legiate experience that will be very beneficial for a young CSU team.

“Niklas has great talent on the court, and will be a force right away in doubles play. Once he is able to trust his game more and know what his strengths are, he will turn into a consistent winner for us in the singles lineup. He is the first left-handed player for us in 11 years, so we are very excited to have him in the lineup,” Etzkin said.

Matt Ford is one of the most experienced players returning for CSU, entering his junior season just shy of making the all-time top-10 career wins list. Ford notched his first 20-win season last year, including a per-fect 7-0 record in league play.

“Matt will anchor the lineup for us again, hopefully starting the sea-son off strong and returning to his winning ways. He is someone that we can count on to win at any spot in the lineup, and is a huge emotional leader for us on the court,” Etzkin said.

Jay Jones enters his final season in a Viking uniform during 2012-13, and will be striving to end his career on a high note. Jones, who has been a consistent contributor throughout his time at CSU, will be looked upon as a leader this season as the Vikings try to bring home another champi-onship.

“As the lone senior on the team we are going to look for Jay’s experi-ence to pay off for us and help a young team reach its full potential this year. He is a good ground stroker who looks to attack when he can, and is very fit so he has the ability to track anything down on the court,” Etzkin said.

Nolan Marks will look to bounce back from an off-season injury this year, eventually working his way back into the Viking lineup. Marks posted 18 singles wins as a freshman, including a 5-2 mark in Horizon League action.

“Nolan is coming back from an injury this year and if he gets into playing shape again he certainly has the ability to get back in the lineup and make our team that much stronger. He is an explosive player with a live arm and big attacking skills. Last year we saw him go from a hitter to a tennis player and hopefully we will continue to develop this season,” Etzkin said.

Success is becoming commonplace for Cleveland State tennis coach Brian Etzkin. As he enters his 11th season with the men’s tennis program, Etzkin is ready to lead the Vikings back to the top of the Horizon League and to their fifth league championship.

Despite last season’s 12-12 finish, Etzkin has many positives to bring into 2012-13, including six return-ing letterwinners, three of which will only be sophomores. Last season’s freshman class accounted for almost half of CSU’s singles wins (48-of-106) and were part of 41 doubles victories.

Etzkin became the head coach at CSU in 2002-03, taking over a men’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. The change came almost overnight, as the Vikings won nine matches during Etzkin’s first year, six more than the previous two years combined. In his time thus far, Etzkin has built a men’s program that is one of the most consistent in the league, finishing in the top half of the standings in seven straight years.

Under Etzkin’s guidance the Vikings have been crowned Horizon League Champions four times, claiming the title during the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. In 2009 the men’s tennis team became the third Cleveland State program to win back-to-back league titles, and in 2010 became the first program in school history to win three-straight.

The 2007-08 season marked the first time in program history that CSU earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the Vikings have returned three times since then (2009, 2010, 2011). Over the past 10 seasons CSU owns a post-season record of 17-10.

The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone during the 2008-09 season, recording his 100th career vic-tory with the men’s program. Entering the 2012-13 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 149-102 at the helm of the Vikings.

Thanks to his accolades, Etzkin has been named Horizon League Coach of the Year three times, earning the honor following the 2010, 2009 and 2007 seasons. In addition, he was named the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Men’s Coach of the Year.

Etzkin has mentored six all-league first team honorees, including four-time nominee Phil Orno (2007, 08, 09, 10) who was also named the Player of the Year as a sophomore. Two Vikings have earned Newcomer of the Year honors under Etzkin; Matt Kuelker following the 2010-11 season and former assistant coach Jay Tee who won the award in 2003.

Cleveland State is just as impressive off the court, as 13 Vikings have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes since the 2002-03 season, and the men’s team has received ITA All-Academic honors twice, during 2009 and 2007. Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship honor; Rob Fox (2011), Steven Wipprecht (2009) and Brad Groleski (2006).

Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community lead-ers. Over the past 10 years three members of the men’s tennis team have been involved with the Cleveland State Student-Athlete Advi-sory Council, including Wipprecht and Tee who each served as the council president. Wipprecht served in the role during the 2008-09 season, while Tee served as president during 2005-06. Groleski also served as the vice president during the 2006-07 season. For the 2012-13 academic year, Nolan Marks has stepped into the role of SAAC representative for the men’s tennis team.

In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank and adopting a second grade class at Marion-Sterling El-ementary school in downtown Cleveland. At the food bank, the stu-dent-athletes do anything from sort and package food to put together boxes that will be sent out to those in need. When the Vikings visit the elementary school, they assist students with their reading, compre-hension and vocabulary skills.

Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordinator.

He also worked as the assistant tennis professional at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in addition to being the Tennis Director and Head Pro at Walnut Hills Country Club. Prior to working with Michigan State, Etzkin spent two years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Western Illinois University from 1998-2000.

Etzkin also coached the 2002 Midwest Junior Davis Cup team to the national champi-onship in Columbia, S.C. He is an active United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Teaching Pro.

Etzkin played college tennis for four years at Southern-Illinois University-Carbondale, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior in 1998, he received GTE Academic All-American honors and was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic selec-tion.

He later returned to school, earning a master’s degree in sport management from Western Illinois in 2000, while serving as a graduate as-sistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams.

interim assistant CoaCH // First season

// v i k i n g S B i o S

Frank Polito, a northeast Ohio native, joins the Cleveland State men’s tennis team as an assistant coach during the 2012-13 season, following 21 successful years in the industry.

Polito joins the CSU coaching staff after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s ten-nis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tournament titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. Georgia also finished the year ranked in the ITA top-10 five out of his six years. For his efforts with the Bulldogs, Polito was named the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and promoted to associate head coach in September of 2010.

Prior to his time in Athens, Polito spent two years as an assistant coach at Kansas (2004-06) and two years in the same position at Ohio State (2001-03). With the Jayhawks, Polito’s coaching and recruiting efforts helped make dramatic improvements on and off the court, culminating with ITA All-Academic Team honors and an ITA No. 59 ranking following the 2006 season. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

Polito also served as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe (1999-2001), head coach at Akron (1997-99), assistant coach and interim head coach at Kansas (1996-97), head coach at Sienna Heights (1995) and head coach at Eastern Michigan (1990-95).

“Frank is probably one of the top assistant coaches in the country for both men and women. He comes to us with three SEC cham-pionship rings and helped get Georgia top recruiting classes during his time there. He has a lot of experience as a coach and I am very excited to have him on the staff and working with the men’s team,” head coach Brian Etzkin said.

Polito is a 1990 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles, and team captain during his senior year. The Lorain, Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and film from EMU.

yanniCk Goossens

student assistant CoaCH // First season

Yannick Goossens joins the Cleveland State coaching staff for his first season as a student assistant, following a stellar four-year career in a Viking uniform.

Goossens, a three-time All-Horizon League First Team honoree, was an integral part of three league championship teams (2009, 2010, 2011), guiding the Vikings to three NCAA appearances during his time at CSU.

During his four seasons as a Viking (2008-2012), Goossens compiled a singles record of 82-58 which currently ranks fourth all-time on the CSU singles wins list. He recorded three 20-win seasons, one of just three Vikings to accomplish the feat.

“Yannick joins our coaching staff this year after an historic career as a Viking. He has proven to be a very different coach than player - he is thoughtful and patient and works very well with the team. He has a great eye for the game and has a great passion for tennis and Cleveland State,” head coach Brian Etzkin said.

Goossens is currently finishing his undergraduate degree in international business. Following his time at Cleveland State, Goos-sens plans on trying his hand at professional tennis.

The 2011-12 season served as a rebuilding year for head coach Brian Etzkin and the Vikings, as four of the eight roster spots were filled by newcomers. Because of the youthful squad, CSU had an up and down year, posting a 12-12 overall record and a 4-3 mark in Horizon League action.

CSU got off to a succesful start during the fall season, as three Vikings earned tournament titles in either singles or doubles action. Matt Kuelker and Jay Jones captured singles championships, while the doubles team of Kuelker and Jorg van der Vloet claimed a doubles crown.

All of CSU’s titles came at the Louisville Fall Invitational, highlighted by Keulker and Jones’ sin-gles championships. Keulker won the Flight A Singles Consolation bracket, while Jones won the Flight B Singles Consolation bracket. The doubles team of Kuelker and van der Vloet also picked up their title at the Louisivlle Fall Invite, winning the Flight B Doubles bracket.

The doubles team of Yannick Goos-sens and Ali Shabib posted another highlight for the Vikings during the fall season at the Notre Dame Invi-taitonal, as they were the only dou-bles tandem to go undefeated on the weekend, notching a 3-0 record at the invite.

The Vikings got off to a rough start during the spring season, dropping their first three contests, including a match against No. 65 Princeton. CSU bounced back and evened out its record with three straight victo-

ries though, defeating Xavier, St. Bonaventure and Buffalo.

After six weeks of action the Vikings remained at .500 on the season before taking their annual spring trip to Florida, where they went up against tough competition including their second ranked opponent of the season, No. 59 Stetson. Although the Vikings came back from their spring trip with an 0-3 mark, they were happy with the competitive attitude that the entire lineup had.

The competitiveness continued throughout CSU’s next two matches, as they opened league play with a 4-3 victory at Detroit and claimed the program’s first-ever win over Western Michigan with a 4-3 decision.

Following the WMU victory, the Vikings’ 26-match regular season Horizon League win streak was snapped, as CSU fell to Youngstown State and Detroit. The losses were the first in over four years for the Vikings, and put them at 7-10 on the season.

Cleveland State rebounded and ended the regular season winning three out of its last four matches, with victories over UIC, Valparaiso and Butler. The Vikings end-ed the regular season with a 10-11 record.

For the first time in four years CSU entered the Horizon League Tournament with a seed lower than one, as they earned the No. 4 seed following the regular season. In their quarterfinal match the Vikings went up against No. 5 Detroit and pulled out a 4-3 win with Marks posting the clinching point at No. 3 singles.

Waiting for CSU in the semifinal contest was top-seeded Wright State, who claimed a 4-3 victory against the Vikings to close out the regular season. CSU came out strong, earning the doubles point and then quickly posted three singles victories from Goossens, Kuelker and Shabib to knock off the Raiders.

After battling their way to the championship match for the fifth consecutive year, the Vikings faced second-seeded Green Bay in the title match. van der Vloet was the lone Viking to notch a point against the Phoenix, as Green Bay claimed the Horizon League championship, 4-1.

Goossens and Kuelker were each honored for their work throughout the season, Goossens earning first team all-league honors and Kuelker earning second team all-league accolades.
