SERIES VS. NORTH CAROLINA

Coastal Carolina 37, North Carolina 93Nov. 19, 2010 | Conway, S.C.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team fell to No. 14 North Carolina in front of 2,309 fans at the famed Carmi-chael Arena by a final of 93-37 on Friday, Nov. 19. The loss drops the Chants to 2-1 on the young season as the Tar Heels move to a 3-0 record. North Carolina jumped out to an early 16 point lead before the Chants were able to get points on the board. North Carolina’s Chay Shegog and Italee Lucas combined for 12 points during the early run. Once Coastal broke the North Carolina scoring streak, the team gained confidence and played evenly with the nationally ranked Tar Heels for the final five minutes of the first half. North Carolina used a 19-6 run in the first six minutes of the sec-ond half to put the game out of reach for the Chanticleers. As in each of the two previous games this season, the Chants forced at least 15 turnovers with their scrappy defense. With this de-fensive pressure looming, North Carolina was held without a field goal in the last 4:45 of the first half. Similar to the Southern Virginia contest, the Chanticleer bench came through with 16 points as each player on the Coastal Carolina roster saw playing time. 2012-13 Coastal Carolina Women’s Basketball Game NotesGame 9 | Coastal Carolina vs. North Carolina | Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012 | 2:00 p.m. | The HTC Center | Conway, S.C.

JELLY TIME Angelica Henry (affectionately referred to as Jelly by her teammates) turned in a career performance in Coastal’s 70-43 win against Converse. The junior guard scored a career-high 24 points on an impressive 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the field. Her 24 points were the most scored in a game by a Chanticleer since Sydnei Moss turned in a 25-point performance against Liberty in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament on March 11, 2011. Henry took full advantage of her quickness to convert five fast-break layups in addition to knocking down five jumpers, including one from deep. She also finished the game with a team-high six boards, while dishing out four helpers.

ON THIS DATE Coastal Carolina holds a 4-3 all-time record in games played on Dec. 16. The Chants first played on Dec. 16 during the 1990-91 season, defeating Morehead State 87-86. Coastal won 53-43 in its last game played on Dec. 16 at South Carolina State. Coastal is 2-2 on Dec. 16 during the LeForce era.

4 IN 7 — PART DEUX The Chanticleers take the court against North Carolina for their second of four games in a seven day period. The Chants handily defeated Converse 70-43 on Thursday to open the grinding stretch. Coastal will travel to South Car-olina State on Tuesday, Nov. 18 before closing the stretch against North Florida in the annual Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The Chanticleers played four games in seven days earlier

this season, going 3-1 with wins over Western Carolina, Columbia (SC) and Southern Virginia.

1 NOT 23 AJ Jordan is in the midst of having a breakout sophomore season for the Chanticleers. Through the first seven games the guard is averaging a team-high 13.0 points per contest, while shooting 44 percent from the field. Jordan ranks second on the team in rebounding as she averages 5.7 per contest. Moreover, the Harriman, Tenn., product ranks second in the Big South with an impressive +1.24 assist to turnover ratio.

THE LeFORCE HOSPITALITY SUITE On Dec. 6, 2012 the Chanticleer Athletic Foundation’s suite in The HTC Center was renamed the LeForce Hospitality Suite in honor of women’s basketball head coach Alan LeForce and his wife Shirley. LeForce is Coastal Carolina’s all-time winningest women’s basketball coach. Moreover, LeForce is the only coach in NCAA history to accumulate 200 or more wins as a Division I men’s and women’s head coach.

CONNOR’S CAREER DAY Center Katelyn Connor turned in a career-best performance against Gardner-Webb as she tallied her first career dou-ble-double. The junior posted career-highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Connor shot 4-of-7 from the field and 6-of-12 from the charity stripe. Each of her four offensive rebounds led to secon-chance points for the Chanticleers. She also set her career-high with a game-high four blocked shots, including a key block on an Olivia Parker layup attempt with 16 seconds to play.

THE CHANTS IN BIG SOUTH OPENERS Coastal Carolina holds a 12-14 record in Big South Con-ference openers since joining the league for the 1986-87 season. The Chanticleers are 6-10 all-time when opening conference play away from Conway.

BRINGING THE D Since veteran head coach Alan LeForce came to Coastal Carolina prior to the 1997-98 season, the Chanticleers have been know for their defensive prowess. And this season is no exception. The Chants rank in the top half of the Big South in every defensive category, including the top spot in scoring defense (48.0 ppg) and 3-point field goal defense (.200).

NOT A BAD DEBUT Freshman Megan Pittman made her collegiate debut on Nov. 24 at IPFW after missing the first five games of the season recovering from an injury. The heralded Liberty, Ky., product scored four points and pulled down three rebounds, while also adding a blocked shot in her nine minutes of play.

FAST BREAKS

Last Time Out...Coastal Carolina70, Converse 43

Dec. 13, 2012 | Conway, S.C. | The HTC Center CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team used 20 steals that led to 32 fast-break points to handily down Converse 70-43 on Thursday at The HTC Center. Junior guard Angelica Henry led the way for the Chanticleer with a ca-reer-high 24 points on an impressive 10-of-13 from the field. The Indianapolis, Ind., native also finished with a team-high six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Henry was joined in double figures by Shatia Cole and Katelyn Con-nor, who chipped in 16 and 15 points, respectively. “Our guards [Angelica Henry and Shatia Cole] played well tonight,” said head coach Alan LeForce. “Angelica had a great game and she showed the type of scoring threat she is capable of being on a consistent basis.” With the win, Coastal Carolina improves to 6-2 (1-0 Big South) and a per-fect 5-0 at home, while the loss drops Converse to 0-7 on the season. After falling behind 4-2 in the opening two minutes the Chanticleers used four-straight fast-break layups following Converse turnovers to take a 10-6 lead and control of the game. Coastal then put together a 10-0 run over the ensuing 3:29 to put the game away for good. The Chanticleers went into the half leading 36-19 with Connor and Henry already showing 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Chants dominated the stat sheet throughout the opening period, scoring 22 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers, and 21 on fast breaks. Coastal opened the second half on a 24-6 run over the initial 10:22 of the period to take a 60-29 lead. The run featured each of Kayla Cook’s six points and nine by Cole. LeForce then turned to his bench for the remainder of the game as the Chants closed out their sixth win of the season on a 9-7 run. Coastal shot 41.7 percent from the floor for the game, including 14-of-31 (45.2 percent) in the second half as Converse struggled to a 27.3 percentage after shooting a 32.8 clip in its previous game.

What is a Chanticleer?A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina

University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system.

A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

WHICH GUARD TO GUARD Through the first five games of the season the Chanticleers have relied heavily on their experience at the guard position. And guards Shatia Cole, AJ Jordan and Angelica Henry have not disappointed. Jordan leads Coastal in scoring averaging 13.0 per outing followed by Cole’s 12.6 and Henry’s 11.8 points per game. In addition, Henry leads the Chants on the glass, averaging 6.6 board per contest.

4 IN 7 Coastal Carolina will play its fourth game in the last seven days against IPFW. The Chants started its grueling week-long stretch with a win over Western Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 17 and followed with back-to-back blowout victories against Columbia (SC) and Southern Virginia on Nov. 19 and 20.

ON THE DEFENSIVE Through the first two games this season the Chanticleers have forced their opponents into 45 turnovers, 21 of which have come by way of steals. In addition Coastal has dominated the defensive glass, hauling in 66 of their 101 boards on the defensive end.

WHAT SOPHOMORE SLUMP? Sophomores AJ Jordan and Shatia Cole are unaware of the superstitious “sophomore slump” that tends to befall athletes. Through Coastal’s two games, the duo led the team in scoring as Jordan averages 10.5 points and Cole 8.5. Furthermore, Jordan has already set or tied five statistical career-highs this season.

YOUNG, SEASONED CHANTS The 2012-13 Chanticleers look like an extremely young team on paper without a senior on the roster. However, the Chants are a seasoned bunch, returning eight players who have seen significant action in their careers. 2012 All-Big South Freshmen Team selection Shatia Cole returns for her second season after ranking second on the team with 10.5 points per game a year ago. Guards AJ Jordan and Angelica Henry, who both made numerous starts last season, should also be in the fold as key contributers. Junior guard Kayla Cook will look to have a breakout season after 5.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore. In all, the young Chants count 268 games played and 39 starts between them.

MAY LeFORCE BE WITH YOU Head Coach Alan LeForce enters his 16th season at the helm of the Chanticleers holding a 215-211 record at Coastal and a 454-390 career record. LeForce’s 215 wins on the Chanticleer side are 120 more than Gin Markland, Coastal’s second all-time winningest coach. Additionally, LeForce is the only coach in NCAA Division I history to win 200-plus games as both a men’s and women’s head coach.

TOUGH STRETCHES Coastal’s 2012-13 schedule features a pair of tough stretches of games. The first comes after playing only two games to start the season. The Chants’ third, fourth, fifth and sixth contests of the season all fall within a seven-day time frame. Coastal first plays Western Carolina (Nov. 17) followed by Columbia College (Nov. 19) and Southern Virginia (20) all at home. The Chants then fly to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a road bout with IPFW on (Nov. 24).Coastal’s second grinding stretch comes the week leading into the Christmas holiday. The Chants host Converse on Dec. 13 followed by perennial power North Carolina on Dec. 16. Coastal then travels to South Carolina State (Dec. 18) before playing North Florida in its annual Carolinas Challenge game at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Dec. 19.

GOOD BYE KIMBEL ... HELLO THE HTC CENTER After spending the entirety of its first 37 seasons of competition playing at Kimbel Arena with a capacity of 1,039, Coastal Carolina has moved into a newly constructed home. The HTC Center boasts a seating capacity of 3,212 along with multiple locker rooms and office suites. In addition, The HTC Center will also play host to the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championship for the next three seasons, giving the Chanticleers a distinct home-court advantage come tournament time.

NEW BIG SOUTH FORMAT With the addition of Longwood as the Big South’s 11th women’s basketball playing member on July 1, 2012, the 2012-13 league women’s basketball schedule will have a new look. Instead of playing each member institution at both home and on the road, Coastal will play Gardner-Webb, Liberty, Presbyterian College, Charleston Southern, High Point, Longwood, Radford and UNC Asheville in a home and home series. Coastal will face Campbell and Winthrop once this season.
