FRESNO STATE SOCCER & LACROSSE FIELDThe Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Field was built in 2009 with the installation of fencing and landscaping around the perimeter of the venue. A permanent scoreboard, sound system, along with spectator seating is scheduled for installation in the coming months, with a permanent pressbox, additional fi xed seating and other amenities planned for installation in the following seasons. The playing surface is a hybrid Bermuda grass blend.

BULLDOG STADIUM FIELDTURF PROJECTFresno State student-athletes play on the very best in turf technology with the installation of the FieldTurf Revolution system at Bulldog Stadium in 2011. FieldTurf’s Revolution fi ber technology is the result of innovative science, engineering and technology that will provide FieldTurf customers with a soft, strong monofi lament fi ber with extraordinary durability and longevity. With a consistent surface for year-round use, the new addition to Bulldog Stadium demonstrated the university’s and community’s commitment to safety and sustainability as the Bulldogs compete as one of the nation’s elite programs.

MEYERS FAMILY SPORTS MEDICINE CENTERThe Sports Medicine Center will be a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that is designed to enhance the health and welfare of all Bulldog student-athletes. This unique and essential facility will allow for preventative medicine, nutritional counseling, physician examination, injury treatment, on-site x-ray and rehabilitation services, and suffi cient offi ce and counseling space to support the Fresno State sports medicine staff and physicians group. The Sports Medicine Center will serve as the third cornerstone of Fresno State’s “Student-Athlete Village,” designed to provide Bulldog student-athletes with a single and secure facility intended to assist their well-being, development, and achievement. No single facility will have a more positive effect on the daily physical well-being and lives of Bulldog student-athletes.

EQUESTRIAN & SOFTBALL SCOREBOARDSIn 2012, Fresno State added new scoreboards at two of its athletic venues - Bulldog Diamond and the Student Horse Center. The new scoreboard at the Bulldog Diamond came as a result of a planned gift to the Fresno State softball program from Vonnie Fogard, a long-time season ticket holder and member of the Bulldog Softball Diamond Club. The new Daktronics LED matrix color scoreboard replaces the old matrix board that was fi rst installed when Bulldog Diamond was built in 1996. Meanwhile at the Student Horse Center, the scoreboard is the fi rst to ever be installed at an NCEA (National Collegiate Equestrian Association) Equestrian venue. The project was spearheaded by the Saddle Club, the equestrian team booster club, who raised all funding exclusively through private funds. The electronic scoreboard is a 5’ x 12’ Daktronics LED.

When it comes to developing players for the NFL, few have done it better. Hill’s NFL background, connections and services on Bill Belich-ick’s coaching staff all are major factors in the success of former Dogs in the pros. With 28 former Bulldogs set to report to NFL training camps this summer, Fresno State once again leads all non-BCS schools with the most NFL players.

That number is pretty high among programs in the west with only one fewer than Oregon State (29). Compared to other schools, Fresno State is making an impact on NFL rosters: Utah (26), UCLA (25), BYU (21), TCU (21), Colorado (20), Stanford (20), Arizona (19), Texas Tech (17), Missouri (16), Washington (16), Washington State (15), Boise State (13), San Jose State (10) and Houston (9).

Under Hill, 24 former Bulldog have been drafted by the NFL, including 12 in the last five years. Among those arethree first round picks, quarterback David Carr, the No. 1 overall selection in 2002, Logan Mankins, an NFL All-Pro,by the New England Patriots in 2005 and most recently Ryan Mathews, who led the country in rushing, by the SanDiego Chargers in 2010 .

“When players who have the talent to play in the NFL make a commitment toward that career goal, we have a greatchance of getting them drafted or placed with the right team as a free agent,” said Hill. “Clifton Smith made thePro Bowl as an undrafted free agent as a rookie, so that tells you we have some talentedplayers in our program. He got his shot and made the most of it.”

FOOTBALL FACILITIESACADEMIC COMMITMENTFresno State’s commitment to academic success is evident in the vast improvements being made on campus. The Ricchiuti Academic Center, completed in October 2004, is a $5 mil-lion facility that assists all Bulldog student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The RAC houses offices for the Student-Athletes Services staff, a computer lab, plus teaching and tutorial stations.

THE PRIDE OF THE VALLEYThanks to generous contributions from the community, the Valley Growers Practice Field rivals any NFL facility. With two lighted fields, the Bulldogs have the premier college practice facility on the West Coast.

GROWING INTO THE FUTUREFresno State offers the finest in medical care. The recently renovated Duncan Training Room has state-of-the-art equipment and has a complete private doctor’s evaluation office.

STRENGTH IN TRAININGFresno State’s state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center is the newest and one of the largest weight complexes in the WAC. Able to accommodate more than 100 student-athletes at a time, it features 26 tons of custom steel weights, eight Olympic lifting platforms, a 40-yard plyometric track (including an electronic timing system), and several pieces of Kaiser pneumatic equipment used for high speed power training.

2012 2013

BULLDOG STADIUM Bulldog Stadium has been the home of the Fresno State football team since it first opened in 1980 and it also hosts the women’s soccer team (since 1995) and the women’s lacrosse team (since 2009). Entering its 33rd season hosting the football team, the 41,031-seat facility has established itself as one of the most difficult places to play for visiting teams. Fresno State has found great success in its home facility, owning a record of 148-45-2 that is good for a winning percentage over 75 percent (.759). Over the last 15 seasons, the ’Dogs have posted a 64-22 (.744) record at Bulldog Stadium and included in that stretch was a 17-game home winning streak from 1998-01. Some of the monumental home victories at Bulldog Stadium include a 44-24 win over No. 10 Oregon State - the highest ever ranked opponent to come to Fresno at that time - in 2001, a 17-3 win over Cal in 2000 and a 28-14 win over Cincinnati in 2010. Fresno State has been able to bring in some of the nation’s top teams to Bulldog Stadium over the years. Included in that list are Baylor, Cal, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oregon State (twice) and Wisconsin. This coming 2012 season, Colorado from the Pac-12 will play at Bulldog Stadium and in 2011, No. 5 Boise State became the highest-ranked opponent to ever play in Bulldog Stadium. The Red Wave has packed Bulldog Stadium to its limit countless times over the years. Fresno State has played 29 games with 40,000 or more fans in the stands. In 2000, the Bulldogs set a new single-season attendance record when they averaged 42,410 fans, the 22nd-best mark in the nation. The following season, in which Fresno State achieved a program-record national ranking of No. 8, was even better. The Bulldogs set a new record by averaging 42,802 fans, including stadium single-game records of 42,881 in each of the last five contests of that year. The large crowds and loyal fan support is one reason why CBSSportsline.com voted Bulldog Stadium the nation’s 23rd-best college football facility in 2003.

In the summer of 2011, Bulldog Stadium received a face-lift when FieldTurf was installed as the new playing surface. The $1.2 million project was funded completely by private donations. Original construction of Bulldog Stadium began in June of 1979 following what was then the most successful capital fundraising project ever undertaken in the San Joaquin Valley. Local residents raised in excess of $7 million for the project. No state tax dollars or student fees were used to build the stadium. Built partially below ground level with the playing field 37 feet below grade, the bowl features a low profile appearance. A unique cantilevered lighting system extends toward the field and is directed downward to concentrate lighting on the playing surface. Bulldog Stadium underwent a two-phase expansion project in 1991, which included the addition of more than 10,000 seats -- increasing the stadium’s capacity from 30,000 to 41,031 -- and the construction of 22 sky suites. Other improvements included additional restrooms and concession facilities. The first phase entailed filling in the panels beyond the north and south end zones with bench seating and the reconfiguration of the seating on the stadium’s east side. The second phase, completed prior to the 1992 season, featured the addition of 22 sky suites, each of which includes seating for 20, among other amenities. At its present state, chair seating is available for more than 5,000 spectators on the west side of the stadium between the 18-yard lines to accommodate the contributors of the $7 million. There are also 4,240 chair-back seats on the east side and the rest of the stadium seating is on aluminum benches. Fresno State defeated Montana State 21-14 on Nov. 25, 1980, in the first game played in the stadium. Bulldog Stadium was also home to the California Raisin Bowl from 1981-91. Fresno State played in the game five times, winning the title on four occasions. In 1994, the Stadium hosted friendly matches prior to the FIFA World Cup.

THE PRIDE OF THE VALLEYThanks to generous contributions from the community, the Valley Growers Practice Field rivals any NFL facility. With two lighted fields, the Bulldogs have the premier college practice facility on the West Coast.

Come Sept. 1, Bulldog fans are going to see a new brand of football that hasn’t been seen before.

That brand: fanatical.

New Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter, who was hired on Dec. 14, 2011, promises his team will play fast, physical and with a fanatical effort.

“We’re going to play like our hair is on fire,” DeRuyter said.

DeRuyter, who is just the third Bulldog head coach in the last 30 years, comes to Fresno State from Texas A&M where he was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Bringing in a defensive-minded coach is something Bulldog football fans were happy to see after Fresno State allowed over 35 points per game and 435 yards of offense last season.

But just because he is a coach with a defensive background doesn’t mean he is lacking a vision for a new offense as he leads Fresno State into the Mountain West Conference.

“Offensively, we are going to spread the field vertically and horizontally,” DeRuyter said. “Most importantly, we are going to play with tempo.”

The Bulldogs are switching from a pro-style offense to a spread offense under new offensive coordinator Dave Schramm. The spread offense, which is the new fad in college football, uses a no-huddle approach and is fast-paced. Schramm plans to utilize a talented roster to light up the scoreboard in a hurry.

It all starts with quarterback Derek Carr, who is coming off his sophomore season where

he completed 63 percent of his passes and threw for 3,544 yards and 26 touchdowns.

“Going into this season as a team, we’re expecting some great things,” Carr said. “Everyone is healthy. Everyone that needs to be playing is playing and we got some great depth. We got a lot of talent that can play at the next level, so as long as we can put that together I’m 10 times more excited for this season for our team.”

Alongside Carr is running back Robbie Rouse, who is on the verge of becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher. Rouse enters his senior season with 3,157 career rushing yards and needs just 317 more yards to break Ron Rivers’ 18-year old school record.

A first-team All-WAC selection a year ago, Rouse should have an easier time running the ball this season than he did last year. That is a product of the new offense.

The theory behind the spread is that you have to make the defense take away either the run or the pass. If teams try to take away the pass by bringing an extra defensive back into the game, than Rouse will have more room to run at the line of scrimmage.

When teams beef up at the line to stop Rouse, Carr will be able air it out. That is when the offense gets exciting because big plays follow.

“[Robbie] will be able to run the ball against a lot lighter box than he did before,” Schramm said. “Hopefully we’re throwing the ball well enough that you’re going to give him bigger running lanes and a little less people to have to deal with.”

The Bulldog receiving corps is probably the deepest and most talented position on the team. Four players that all caught 30 or more passes last year return.

receiver coach Ron Antoine. “We got some guys who obviously have proven themselves in years before so it is a good group.”

Senior Rashad Evans is the most experienced receiver, with over 100 catches and 1,000 receiving yards on his resume.

Then you have Josh Harper, who as a freshman caught 35 passes for 497 yards and five touchdowns a year ago – the most by a Bulldog freshman in the last 10 years.

A.J. Johnson and Victor Dean are both targets Carr will be looking for, especially Dean who stands 6-6 and runs a 4.39 40-yard dash.

The one newcomer to the group is redshirt freshman Davante Adams, a talented receiver out of Palo Alto, Calif. Fresno State fans will get to know his name early in the season.

The backbone behind any great offense is a great offensive line.

Fresno State returns five offensive linemen that all started seven or more games last season, so experience is on its side. The only perceived problem with the offensive line is a lack of depth, but DeRuyter and his staff addressed that by bringing in several junior college players to work in the trenches.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs will be led by defensive coordinator Nick Toth. Toth was with DeRuyter at Texas A&M where he coached the linebackers, including Von Miller.

Under Toth’s tutelage, Miller won the 2010 Butkus Award given to the nation’s most

outstanding linebacker and went on to become the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011.

The system DeRuyter and Toth bring is a multiple 3-4, where you have three down linemen and four linebackers. It is centered on stopping the run, pressuring the quarterback and creating turnovers.

“We do not want to let people run the football on us,” Toth said. “Those teams that win championships generally play really, really good run defense. To supplement that, we’ve done a good job in the past of getting after the passer, whether it is to force turnovers or knocking [the quarterback] to the ground.”

For years, the Bulldogs have struggled trying to create turnovers. In each of the last four seasons, Fresno State forced 15 turnovers or less and ranked 111th or worse nationally in turnovers gained – and that is out of 120 Division I FBS teams.

The goal for this year and every year in DeRuyter’s and Toth’s system is to force 30 or more turnovers.

One of the key components on defense was missing from last season’s team, and that was safety Phillip Thomas. Thomas missed the entire year after suffering a broken leg days before the 2011 season opener. He is back on the field and healthy, ready for his senior season.

“We’ve got Phillip Thomas, who is a strong safety, an NFL strong safety. We haven’t had one of those in this defense,” Toth said of his past teams at Texas A&M. “We’ve had NFL

TEAM NOTES→ A New Era At Fresno State: Tim DeRuyter was named the 17th head coach at Fresno State on Dec. 14, 2011, becoming just the third Bulldog head coach in the last 32 years. DeRuyter comes to Fresno State with 22 years of experience, 16 of which were spent as a defensive coordinator. He spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M. His 2011 Aggie squad led the nation in sacks with 51 and he will bring over his 3-4 defensive scheme to the Bulldogs this year. Nick Toth, who was with DeRuyter at A&M, will be Fresno State’s defensive coordinator. Offensively, DeRuyter hired Dave Schramm from Utah to run Fresno State’s offense. The Bulldogs will switch from a pro-style offense this spring to a spread offense. The new coaches will have plenty of talent to work with on both sides of the ball, as the Bulldogs return eight starters on offense and seven on defense.

→ Derek Carr Fresno State’s Next Great QB: Junior quarterback Derek Carr returns in 2012 for his second season as Fresno State’s starting quarterback. His first was unlike any other in school history and that is saying something because of the quarterback lineage that has come through the Valley. Carr set a program record for most passing yards by a sophomore, throwing for 3,544 yards in 2011 with 26 touchdowns against nine interceptions. His passing yardage was the third-most for a single-season in program history. Carr averaged 278.2 yards per game in his first season as a starter, which was 64 more yards per game than Trent Dilfer had in his first season as a starter and 12 more yards than his brother David Carr averaged in his first year. Dilfer (No. 6 overall - 1994) and David Carr (No. 1 overall – 2002) were both first round draft picks. Derek Carr is surrounded by a loaded offense that includes five offensive linemen returning who all started in seven or more games last year. With the new offense that will now be centered on spreading the ball around, Carr has a good shot to surpass his 2011 numbers.

→ Rouse Looks to Break School Record: Robbie Rouse enters his senior season needing only 317 yards to break Ron Rivers’ 18-year-old school record for most rushing yards in a career. Rouse has run for 3,157 yards in his first three seasons and he enters 2012 as the nation’s third active leading rushing behind Wisconsin’s Montee Ball (3,310) and Michigan’s Denard Robinson (3,229). Over the last two years Rouse has run for 2,678 yards, which is the most any Fresno State running back has had in back-to-back seasons. He looks to become the first Bulldog to ever have three 1,000-yard

corners. We’ve had NFL inside linebackers and outside linebackers, obviously, and [defensive] linemen. We’ve never really had the safety that is a flat-out man; [Phillip] is the guy.”

In addition to Thomas’ return from injury, also back from a broken arm is free safety Derron Smith. Those two join a group of seven returning starters on defense.

Outside linebacker Travis Brown, a two-time all-conference selection, is poised for a big senior year. He and the other outside linebackers that includes fellow seniors Shawn Plummer and Tristan Okpalaugo along with sophomore Donavon Lewis, are ready to get after the quarterback.

Fresno State had 22 sacks a year ago – 9.5 of which came from Brown, Okpalaugo and Lewis. At Texas A&M in 2011, DeRuyter’s defense led the nation with 51 sacks.

The inside linebackers, key for stopping the run and lining up the defense, include juniors Jeremiah Toma and Patrick Su’a. Toma started every game last year while Su’a started three games and was the special teams stud. Both were captains a year ago and figure to lead the team again.

“Those are our two guys inside,” Toth said of Su’a and Toma. “They are super smart and picked up our defense right away.”

Backing them up will be Karl Mickelson, Kyrie Wilson and Malique Micenheimer.

Up front at the line of scrimmage will be two ends and a nose guard. Look for senior Anthony Williams to have a breakout season.

He will be one of the ends in the defense, along with Nikko Motta and Matt Akers. Then at nose guard is Tyeler Davison and Andy Jennings.

“Tyeler Davison is going to be a good player in this league,” Toth said. “Anthony Williams, who is going to be a senior, is also a very good football player. Those two guys are kind of the anchor for us [on the defensive line].”

With the all the changes over the offseason, it now comes down to getting out on the field and doing it.

The Bulldogs report for fall camp on Aug. 2 and have 29 practices before opening up the season on Sept. 1 at home against Weber State.

Fresno State plays six home games in 2012 and DeRuyter is looking forward to seeing the Red Wave out at Bulldog Stadium.

“My goal is to build a championship team,” he said. “We are going to build a team that is going to win over the hearts and minds of the Valley.”

→ Phillip Thomas Returns to Lead Secondary: After missing all of the 2011 season with a broken leg suffered in a non-contact drill three days before Fresno State’s season opener, senior safety Phillip Thomas is set to return to the field in 2012. His return will provide an immeasurable boost to the defense, as Thomas is regarded as the team’s most valuable defensive player and a future NFL draft pick. He will have a lot of help getting him there, as Fresno State hired Tim McDonald as its secondary coach. McDonald played 13 seasons at safety in the NFL and was selected to six Pro Bowls while leading the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl XXIX Championship. In 2010 as a third-year sophomore, Thomas was fifth on the team with 64 tackles and he led the squad with three interceptions and nine pass breakups.

“V” IS FOR VALLEY Fresno State prides itself on being the “Valley’s team.” This pride can be seen in the form of a large green V on the back of the Bulldog helmets, as a symbol to the agricultural community of Central Valley of California. The San Joaquin Valley is the world’s richest agricultural valley in export dollars.

FRESNO STATE IDENTIFICATIONThe University’s formal name is California State University, Fresno. Fresno State is the acceptable shorter, less formal name for the university. It is acceptable as a first text reference, as well as subsequent references.

For athletics department purposes, the University prefers to be called simply Fresno State - never Fresno State University and never shorten to Fresno. For graphics or abbreviations, we ask that you please use FS - not FSU, CSUF or Fresno. Another acceptable abbreviations is Fresno St.

2012 FRESNO STATE FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

MEDIA COVERAGE AT FRESNO STATEFew programs in the nation have received as much national television exposure as the Fresno State Bulldogs since the turn of the century. Since 2000, Fresno State has made 83 nationally televised games with 47 of those coming on one of the ESPN platforms.

Some of Fresno State’s games have reached “instant classic” status including the most dramatic and memorable game of the 2005 season, when the Bulldogs took No. 1-ranked USC to the wire in front of a capacity crowd at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and the 2007 triple overtime game at Texas A&M in 2007.

National television audiences have seen the Bulldogs win at UCLA, Colorado, Washington, Wisconsin, Hawai’i, Colorado State, Rutgers, Kansas State and Illinois. In addition, Fresno State has played a major role in national television non-conference match-ups against LSU, Tennessee, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, UCLA, Oregon and Oregon State.

Fresno has grown to the fifth largest city in California and is the 45th largest television market in the United States.
