Dear Friends,

It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to the 2012-2013 season of YOUR Abilene Philharmonic. The Philharmonic is truly a treasure of which our community can be proud. This amazing institution has been sustained and nurtured by generations of Abilineans, and is now the envy of the region.

In addition to our Masterworks and Pops concerts, the Philharmonic performs specially designed programs each year for thousands of Abilene and Big Country elementary school children, brings master classes with renowned artists to high school and university students, and utilizes the best of our local artists, combining them with national and international talent.

I look forward to seeing you in September.

Best regards,David Itkin, Music Director

This is YOUR Abilene Philharmonic

Beautiful music lifts your spirit, sparks your imagination and awakens your heart. The tone and vibration are sounds you hear but the soul of the instrument is the hand that plays it. Music isn’t just our profession, it’s our passion!

This Season we celebrate Abilene and our part within this great city. From the people that we know, to the landmarks we cherish to the community we share, we celebrate Abilene.

The Philharmonic has been a part of Abilene for over 60 years – creating live symphonic music for three generations. We live, work and play in the Big Country and are proud to be part of the tapestry that makes for such a unique community.

We hope that you will come to a concert and hear what you have been missing. If you already attend, you know first-hand that there is something special when the baton is raised and the first note is played.

This is YOUR Abilene Philharmonic….YOUR seat is waiting!

“I enjoy playing with The Abilene Philharmonic because of the caliber of musicians and the excellent leadership. I certainly appreciate the direction that the orchestra has gone in the past several years. It is wonderful to get the chance to play with musicians from all over Texas: Abilene, Lubbock, Midland, Dallas, Waco, Austin, to name a few.”

“As the Music Director, David Itkin has definitely brought a lot of talent to the Philharmonic. His expectations are high, skill is great, and he is an incredible asset to the group. Along with being musically rewarding, The Abilene Philharmonic has a reputation for professionalism and the most appreciative audiences around. I am very proud to be a member of this unique and one of a kind orchestra.”

It is a joy to me to play with like minded musicians who create something of excellence, and with leadership to help accomplish it. I particularly enjoy the vocal tradition in Abilene and the wonderfully entertaining pops concerts.”

“I play the bassoon because it is a fascinating and complicated instrument that has played a significant role in most all types of music since the 17th century.”

Ms. Gan actively performs in the DFW area. She has recently performed with groups such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Fifth Dimension, Clay Aiken, Peter Gabriel and Josh Groban. Ms. Gan has performed in Canada, Israel, Asia, the US, and Europe. In addition to playing in the Abilene Philharmonic, Ms. Gan also plays with the Dallas Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the East Texas Symphony, and the Plano Symphony.

The Nocturne Project November 17, 2012Conductor-less Chamber Series March 23, 2013The Abilene Philharmonic is embarking upon a new series of conductor-less chamber concerts to enhance the regular season programming. Never before seen in this area, these chamber concerts are designed to showcase the tremendous talent already found on the Philharmonic’s stage.

Modeled after New York City’s conductor-less series first seen at the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Abilene Philharmonic’s Nocturne Project Chamber Series will create a more intimate environment for all. Working without a conductor allows musicians to develop their own musical interpretations and take ownership of their creative performances.

Discover Music Education Concerts October 25 & 26, 2012Sponsored by: HEB Supermarkets

Each year the Abilene Philharmonic presents the Discovery Music Concerts to all third-through-fifth grade students in Abilene and the surrounding regions, covering 22 school districts and reaching out over a 100-mile radius. Over a two-day period, four concerts are presented to approximately 7000 students.

David Itkin, Music Director and Conductor, AISD music teachers and the Philharmonic’s Education Director collaborate to design unique and exciting educational programming - from concept and curriculum to live performance. This is the only music education curriculum of its kind within the Big Country.

Craig Leffer, cello

New York native Craig Leffer began his cello studies at the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Currently he performs with various Dallas area ensembles including the Dallas Opera Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, and Fort Worth Symphony. Leffer has served as principal cellist of the Abilene Philharmonic since 2006.

“I like playing with the Abilene Philharmonic because it brings me joy to perform terrific music with such wonderful colleagues and soloists under a great conductor.”

“I love being a musician because I get to continue a tradition of keeping classical music relevant and also to uphold the importance of artistic expression in life.”

7

Brochure 12.13 full.indd 7 4/6/2012 4:16:13 PM

Page 8: 2012-2013 Brochure

“I love being a musician because playing music is a highly expressive art form that captures the heart and soul of humanity. “

“I play the trombone because there were too many drummers in the 6th grade band. Trombone looked like a lot of fun and was my second choice on instrument sign up day. (I did play set in a rock band in Denver for awhile but I’m over that now.)”

“I like playing with the Abilene Philharmonic because there is a real sense of collaboration and respect between individual members of the orchestra.”
