Defi ance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defi ance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environment, students can have hands-on experiences in their fi eld of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, di-verse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research op-portunities for personal and professional growth.

The Princeton Review features Defi ance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community In-volvement. Defi ance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing signifi cant benefi ts and services to veterans. Defi ance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classifi cation.

Defi ance College offers students a world of opportunities to en-hance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the hu-man condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, confl ict resolution and cul-tural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofi t organization.

Defi ance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Pro-gram, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifi -cally address the late adolescent years and the transition of indi-viduals with autism to adulthood.

Student life is an important part of a Defi ance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societ-ies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity.

As a national leader in the fi eld of service learning and engage-ment, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defi ance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

Dear Fellow Defi ance College Fan,

The entire Defi ance College family joins me in wel-coming you to our campus and to today’s game.

We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defi ance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering fresh-man class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen signifi cant increases in applications, with particu-lar increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories.

Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other coun-tries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defi ance College offers stu-dents the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefi ts of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain.

As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing indi-vidualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each stu-dent. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby en-abling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service.

At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-cur-ricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, help-ing students to develop a distinctive Defi ance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give stu-dents distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fi elds; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defi ance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world.

While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an op-portunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defi ance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes.

I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defi ance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contrib-ute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated ad-ministrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is.

We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host.

Go Jackets!

Sincerely,

Mark C. Gordon, President

DC Cross Country 2012Quick FactsQuick FactsATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY

The Defi ance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular edu-cational and physical activity that fi ts within the gener-al mission of the college to develop the whole person.

The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of op-portunities for personal growth in the areas of intellec-tual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimen-sions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the fi eld and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued em-phasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learn-ing process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than score-board success, in a balanced sports program where eq-uitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders.

The student-athletes of Defi ance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related fi nancial aid or the promise of fi nancial secu-rity through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfi llment of countless intrinsic values.

John Hartpence is in his sixth season at the helm of the Defi ance College cross country and track and fi eld pro-grams, where he works primarily with athletes in the distance, hurdles, and fi eld events. In 2011, Hartpence led the men’s track and fi eld team to second-place fi nishes in the Indoor and Outdoor Heart-land Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. He also led the women’s teams to sixth and fi fth-place fi n-ishes respectively. The Yellow Jackets had fantastic seasons over the indoor and outdoor campaigns. In terms of individual performances, the squad stockpiled numerous conference honors along with breaking multiple school records. Hartpence coached his athletes to records in 17 individual and two team events, along with producing six All-HCAC performers. He also notched conference champions in eight events, three All-Ohio honorees and 16 Academic All-Conference members. Hartpence’s greatest accomplishment of the season however, was coaching All-American Tom Postema. Over the indoor and outdoor campaigns, Postema was a six-time HCAC Field Athlete of the Week and HCAC champion in four events. He was also named HCAC Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year and was a fourth-place fi nisher in the discus at NCAA Division III Nationals to garner All-American honors. Hartpence came to Defi ance after serving as the head track and fi eld coach at Dickinson College for seven years, where he guided the women’s team to six Centennial Collegiate Conference Championships, and saw the men’s team earn fi ve runner-up fi nishes. In addition to the teams’ success, Hartpence guided his Red Devils to 65 individual conference championships during his tenure at Dickinson, and was voted as the USTFCCAA Mid-East Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2003 Hartpence earned his undergraduate degree in physical education from Cortland College, before completing a master’s of science degree in health and human performance from the University of Montana in 1996. He is certi-fi ed as a Level II Track and Field Coach for throwing and jumping events.

Kirk Shellhouse began his tenure at Defi ance College on August 1, 2012. His duties include being the assistant coach for both men’s and women’s cross country in the fall, as well as coaching distance for the track and fi eld program in the spring. Shellhouse comes to Defi ance after stops at Heidelberg, Oberlin College, Wellington High School and New London over the past year and a half. Fresh out of Heidelberg College, where he graduated in December of 2010 with a bachelor of science in history and education concentration, Shellhouse took an assistant coaching position at Oberlin College in January of 2011. While there for the spring track and fi eld and cross country seasons, he coached an individual female to three NCAA DIII All-American honors in the indoor and outdoor 5k, as well as the 10k. He also guided an indi-vidual male to qualify for the NCAA DIII National Championship in the 3k steeple chase. After his success at Oberlin, Shellhouse accepted the position of head cross country coach at his alma mater, Wel-lington High, in August of 2011. During his time there, the track program grew from three to 14 individuals in his fi rst season. Along with growing the program numbers, Shellhouse had success with them as he coached several male runners to All-Lorain County honors. In his own college career, Shellhouse helped lead both his cross country and track and fi eld teams to great fi nishes in the Ohio Athletic Conference. For cross country, his Heidelberg squad placed second in 2007 and fi rst in the conference and a runner up fi nish in the NCAA DIII Great Lakes Region for 2009. As for track and fi eld, the Berg placed second in 2009 and was conference champions in 2010 for the fi rst time in ten years. Shellhouse will be focusing on a master’s of arts in education during his tenure at Defi ance.

Jenna Fatica began her career as the assistant coach for cross country and track and fi eld program at Defi ance College on August 1, 2012. Fatica will focus on sprints and distance for the Jackets track squad. In Fatica’s four year college career at both the University of Akron and Penn State-Behrend, she was a member of the cross country and track and fi eld teams every season. While on Behrend’s cross country team, the Erie, Pennsylvania native was a three-time member of the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Team. For track, she currently holds nine records, and earned the team’s Most Valuable Player award the past three years while being a two-time All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference performer and eight-time All-Mason Dixon Conference performer. Fatica’s greatest accomplishment she has achieved was winning the Behrend Female Ath-lete Award in her senior year. On the academic side of things, Fatica earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Penn State-Behrend in May of 2011. She excelled in school, as she made the Dean’s List in seven-of-eight semesters in college. Those efforts landed her the honor of being inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society. The Erie, Pennsylvania native then stayed closed to home after graduation, when she accepted a position as a ticket sales representative for the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA Developmental League. While with the Bayhawks, Fatica handled all ticket sales and corporate partnerships while providing service to clients, season ticket holders, prospects and single game customers. She was also responsible for handling game-day operations in her time there. Fatica will work towards a master’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in sport management during her time with DC.
