Introductory Letter

Dear Corporate Representative,

Founded in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) aims to address the barriers that keep

many Hispanics/Latinos from earning a college degree. HSF envisions a future where every

Latino household will have at least one college graduate, creating an enduring impact on the

college outlook of Latino families nationwide and ultimately strengthening the American

economy for generations to come. HSF has awarded over $330 million in scholarships over the

past 36 years and has supported a broad range of outreach and education programs to help

students and their families navigate collegiate life; from gaining admission and securing financial

aid to finding employment after graduation.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar Chapter at Georgia Tech (HSF-GT) was established in

2006 to deliver the HSF mission at the local level by advancing the college education of

Hispanics through community outreach and education, affordability via scholarships, and career

opportunities. We hope to not only provide Georgia Tech students with opportunities and

resources, but also actively promote higher education in the local Georgia community.

Our community outreach is incomparable to other Latino student organizations on campus. We

provide weekly tutoring and mentoring programs for young students, attend Latino youth

conferences to educate students and parents, and host on-campus events to expose students to a

college environment. Personal interaction between our members and these young students is

strategic approach. It is also through this personal community outreach that Georgia Tech

students are discovering leadership skills which are transferable to their careers. Additionally,

Georgia Tech students are provided with professional and academic workshops, to further help

them develop into well-rounded individuals for their future careers and communities.

HSF-GT presents you our corporate package, with the idea that your goals and ours can coexist

to form an alliance. Such collaboration can lead to notable improvements in our community,

including the growth and development of Hispanic youth. Inspiring and nurturing just one young

mind can create a continuous chain effect that improves neighborhoods, cities, states, and

eventually an entire nation.

Sincerely,

Diego Castañeda

A Message from our Advisors and President

Senior Advisor | Director of the Office of Hispanic Initiatives I have had the pleasure to serve as Senior Advisor for HSF-GT since

its establishment in 2006. HSF-GT has excelled in more ways than

one and its officers and members have managed to exceed my

expectations. Through focused, strategic recruitment efforts, HSF-GT

has increased student involvement in Hispanic outreach programs

unlike any other student organization on campus. Members

have continuously impacted the lives of many students on and off

campus and have developed a positive reputation. HSF-GT members

are known to be active, passionate, and very community oriented.

Without a doubt, HSF-GT students are more than members of a

student organization; they are role models and leaders in the GT

community and beyond.

Graduate Advisor | PhD Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering Upon initiating my career at Georgia Tech as a graduate student, I

wanted to join an organization that was passionate for helping the

Hispanic community. After attending the Informational Kick-Off

Meeting in 2010, I instantly became interested and offered to rebuild

the website. However, the first outreach event I attended was the HSF

Steps for Success. I still vividly remember a poster at this event

stating: College: not if, but where! When participating in such

outreach events, our goal is to clear misconceptions and provide

answers to both students and parents. There are many barriers than can

be addressed simply by providing answers. As the Graduate Advisor, I

see this organization as an essential part of GT as it continues to build

a pipeline for future Hispanic scientists in the country.

President | BS Mechanical Engineering It is a great privilege to be leading HSF-GT for the 2012-13 academic

year. I have been part of the ups and downs of this organization,

serving as Vice-President and being part of the planning and execution

of almost every program in the past two years. HSF-GT has added a

greater meaning to my career and has also ignited a desire to share this

passion with my peers. Raised in the state of Georgia for nearly my

entire life, I have been a primary witness to the educational challenges

that many Hispanics face. Despite my parents only attaining an

elementary education, I was raised with the greatest values and

support. This, along with the educational encouragement from my

teachers, peers, and siblings, allowed me to pursue my dreams. I now

take it as an inherent responsibility to assist other students in securing

their futures.

Participation at Local Youth Conferences Our highly motivated members are eager to share personal experiences and serve as volunteers at

these life-changing conferences. Generally, our duties at these conferences are to serve as college

workshop presenters or panelists, but we try to do more than that. For example, you may see us

at an HSF booth sharing educational resources and our advice to students or speaking with

parents who may be uninformed about the educational opportunities for their children. Below is

a list of the major youth conference we attend.

Event Spotlight

TSA TEAMS Engineering

High School Competition

This annual nationwide high

school competition challenges

students to work collaboratively

and apply their math and science

knowledge in practical, creative

ways to solve real everyday

engineering challenges. After

participating in TEAMS, students

increase their knowledge of

engineering, feel more confident about participating in engineering activities, and increase their

ability to work with others to solve complex problems. The TEAMS Competition helps develop

“STEM-capable” students in an engaging way by showing how math and science are used to

make tangible differences in the world. Over 80 students from Georgia and Tennessee attend this

event.

HSF Steps for Success Saturdays S4SS is a half-day of hands-on specialized

instruction, which offers a range of college

preparation workshops for middle and high

school students and their parents. This unique

approach utilizes community volunteers as

college prep coaches and has a customized

track of concurrent workshops for students in

each grade level with parent workshops in

Spanish. The curriculum covers an intensive

how-to instruction on taking the SAT or ACT; information on the financial aid process;

assistance in writing a personal statement (essay) for college applications and scholarships; and

guidance for finding a college well-suited to the student’s educational background and interests.

Tutoring & Mentoring Programs Every week during the entire academic

year, HSF-GT members tutor young

Hispanic students, ranging from 1st to 8th

grade. Our members serve as older

brothers and sisters to these young

students, mentoring and guiding them

through their academic and personal

struggles. This program allows for

meaningful, long term relationships which

brings stability and discipline to the lives of many young students. Volunteers also connect with

parents by holding small info sessions and panels in both English and Spanish.
