BEAR SIGHTING: an obs ervation of a bear that d oes not involve an incid ent or hum an-bear conflict and /or an obs ervation w hen a bear was s eem ingly unaware of the p ers on obs erving it, had no obs ervable s tres s -related res p ons e to the p ers on d uring an interaction (Sm ith et al. 2005, Wild er et al. 2007), or res p ond ed to the p ers on by taking evas ive action.

INCIDENT: an occurrence that involved a hum an–bear conflict or ep is od es where bears obtained hum an-p rovid ed food s (tras h, bird feed ers , fruit trees , etc), caus ed p rop erty d am age, killed or attem p ted to kill lives tock or p ets , or were involved in vehicle collis ions (Gunther 1994, Schirokauer and Boyd 1998, Gunther et al. 2004, Wild er et al. 2007).

HUMAN-BEAR CONFLICT: any incid ent that has the p otential to caus e hum an or bear injury or m ortality (outs id e of legal hunting harves ts ) and /or p rop erty d am age, and includ es bears feed ing on hum an-p rovid ed food s .
