What is College for Kids?College for Kids (CFK) is a hands-on enrichment program for children in grades K5-8 who have high academicpotential, motivation, a talent, or an interest in computers, math, science, languages, creative arts and humanities.Now in its 32nd year, the program consists of one and two-week classes taught by UW system faculty or highlyqualified and experienced instructors. All programs at UW–Milwaukee provide an "academic edge." Class size islimited to 16 students.

Kindergartners must be five years old by June 10 and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience.

When are Classes?Classes are Mon.-Fri., June 18-Aug. 10and are held on the UWM campus, unless otherwise noted. Specific classdates/times are included in coursedescriptions located on pages 5-22.

Registration Policy Once your child is registered there are no refunds or transfers. Refunds aremade only for classes cancelled by CFK.

How Do I Register? Hassle free registration. No waiting in long lines. Registration opens each yearon Jan. 15. Call, fax in your registration, or go online to sce-kids.uwm.edu. (Mailed registrations add several days to the registration process and lessen the likelihood of availability in your desired class.)

Confirmation ofRegistrationWithin two weeks of your registration,receipt and parental permission formsare mailed to you for completion andreturn. All participants are encouraged to have their own health insurance aslimited secondary accident insurance isprovided by the University.

We offer two options to make things easier for kids and parents. For a minimalcharge, supervised care is available before and after the program day. So comeearly or stay late, however you must sign up for the whole week.

Before Care (7:30-9am) and After Care (4-5:30pm) will meet in the Union TerraceRoom. Chaperoning child to or from class is included in this fee.

Students enrolled in back-to-back classes or before and after care will be chaperoned to their next destination.No extended supervision (longer than the 30 minutes between consecutive class times) is available between 9am-4pm for those notenrolled in class during any part of the day.

Traveling Showtime!Get your show on the road! Share the stage and display your new found actingtalent. Light up the stage in this newlydesigned course, as all three programstravel together to perform on the road.Movin’ to the Music, Magic on the Move and Traveling Theatre Company classes will travel to different areas of the cityputting on performances that are sure to “wow” the crowd! Join one or all, it’s up to you.

Movin' to the MusicCollege for Kids, in association with UWM’sDepartment of Theatre and Dance–PeckSchool of the Arts, welcomes for the firsttime ever, Movin’ to the Music! This excitingmulti-performance touring company seeksstudents who love to dance. Rehearsals/classes meet July 23-Aug. 3, 9-11am, on the UWM campus. During the final week,Aug. 6-10, the company meets from 9-4pm,performing twice daily for a variety ofaudiences throughout the Milwaukee area,including shows at the Betty Brinn Children’sMuseum and the Mitchell Park Domes. Ifyou feel the beat and love to dance, then thisclass is for you! The UWM Writing Project -Young Writers’ CampBack by popular demand, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project(UWMWP) is sponsoring a camp for aspiringwriters entering grades 5-8. Meet each dayin writing groups facilitated by experiencedwriters and teachers whose common goal is to inspire the imagination and have fun!Students of all writing abilities are welcome.n Write daily in a creative, supportive

environmentn Explore a variety of genres, including

poetry, short stories, plays, graphicnovels, essays, and more

n Learn writing techniques used byprofessional writers

n Receive individual instruction andresponse in small groups from UWMWPwriting teachers

n Meet and share writing with young writersfrom throughout the county

n Engage in process writing: generatingideas, drafting, revising, editing, andpublishing

Young Writers’ Camp culminates in acelebration of writing and an opportunity toshare your favorite pieces! Archaeology Field SchoolOne of our most popular classes returns this summer with a twist. After 10 years ofexcavations, work with scientists as weanalyze our finds and tell the rest of thestory of Trimborn Farm. The adventurebegins on campus with an orientation toarchaeology and the early history ofMilwaukee followed by lab work with theartifacts. We will spend two days at the dig site to complete our stories of Trimborn Farm. Fourth through eighth grade students arechallenged to become Storm Chasers toexplore the principals of tornadoes, cyclonesand severe weather in order to identifyfirsthand how shipwrecks are caused on theGreat Lakes. Check InOn your child’s first day, check in at theUnion Terrace Room, where you will makesure you’ve filled out all the properpaperwork. You will then receive yourCFK/CFT drawstring backpack andwristband. (Please note: you need to do this for your first class only. The lines may be long, so please arrive 30minutes early.)

Pick Up – Drop OffYou may pick up or drop off at the UnionCircle, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., or insidethe Union in the Terrace Room (SW corneron the ground floor).

The instructors will bring their students tothe Union Terrace at the end of class time.You must pick your child up within 15minutes of the end of class (i.e. if classends at 11 am, pick up must be no laterthan 11:15am). Students will be allowed towait for their ride either inside at theUnion Terrace or outside at the drive-up.(Please make sure your child knows wherethey are meeting you.)

You will be charged $7 for each 15 minutesyou are late. (i.e. 4:16-4:31 would be $7,4:32-4:47 would be $14 and so on). If yourchild is not picked up within one hourCFK/CFT will contact the UWM police. Your child will not be allowed to return toclasses until the fee has been paid.

Only students who have a signed parentalconsent form indicating that they can leaveunattended will be able to leave without anadult. If your child is to go home on theirown, make sure you sign that form. Thesestudents will be given “orange” wristbandsto wear throughout the program.

WristbandsWristbands are given out on the first day ofa session and are to be worn each day ofthe program. If your child is enrolled inmore than one session, he/she can receivea new band at the beginning of eachsession. Please bring the old wristbandback in order to get a new one. It is yourresponsibility to make sure your childwears the wristband each day. This is theway we identify our students. The colorstell the staff what privileges the child has,such as leaving campus unattended or notbeing included in pictures. It also verifiesthat your child is in our program. Yourchild will not be allowed to participate inclass unless he/she has the wristband on.

MealsLunch and snacks are not included. Feelfree to send food along with your child.Only students with orange wristbands canpurchase food on campus.

Drawstring Backpacks!All participants will receive a FREE CFKdrawstring backpack! Backpacks arehanded out on the first day when you drop off your child.

What Not To BringPlease do not bring games, toys, tradingcards, electronic devices and other similar materials to classes unless theinstructor has requested you to do so. CFK is not responsible for lost, broken ormissing items.

ScholarshipsNeeds-Based: To be eligible for a limitednumber of needs-based scholarships, the student must be eligible for free orreduced lunch program. Needs-Basedrecipients will be notified by phone the1st week of May.

DPI Pre-College Scholarship Program:Applicants must be going into 6th grade orabove, have a 2.5 grade point average incore courses and be eligible for free orreduced lunch program.
