CREATING A FAIR AND JUST ECONOMY: WHAT WILL IT TAKE?

Women Donors Network 2012 Annual ConferenceIn 2011, at the height of the Occupy movement, we came together focused on challenging corporate power and forging a progressive agenda. We recognized then that an imperative to creating a progressive future is creating an economic system that includes, supports, and benefits all people. While we know a lot about what’s wrong with the economy, as Occupy proved, we as progressives have not yet coalesced around a clear and strong vision for what kind of economy we actually want. At WDN we believe doing this is critical, so in 2012 our conference centers on this theme. We will bring together a range of voices — including community activists, academics, social justice advocates, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and environmentalists — to talk about some of the bright spots in their work around the economy, and some of their most inspiring ideas for building a different economic system based on the values of equity, ecology, and democracy.

THE SAVVY INVESTOR: PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINAR9 am - 4 pm

This special pre-conference seminar will focus on helping us to align our investments with our values. The seminar will delve into the context of the changing landscape of impact investing and opportunities to create a more fair and just economy. Participants will learn about the power of shareholder activism, social enterprise, and mission-related investing to bring about change. Breakout sessions will give those new to the field the chance to explore different strategies and learn how to get started, while more experienced participants can focus on ways to expand their impact.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: DONNA BRAZILE

Veteran Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile will share her keen insights and analysis of the 2012 election results and what it means for a socially and economically progressive future.

LEARNING, SHARING, AND TAKING ACTION: CREATING A FAIR AND JUST ECONOMY

Leading thinkers, organizers, and advocates will join us for two days of deep engagement around our conference theme. We will learn about current successful efforts to redesign and reform the current economy through needed safeguards, policy changes, regulations and job creation strategies that focus on gender and race. We will also explore pioneering ideas and innovations to build a better economy including different models of ownership, new economic strategies, and the leading role women are playing as social entrepreneurs. Through a combination of panel presentations, workshops, and small group discussions, these cutting edge leaders will guide us through a process of learning, sharing, and taking action.

OPENING NIGHT CULTURAL PERFORMANCE: RHA GODDESS PERFORMING HER ACCLAIMED PIECE “OPPORTUNITY NOW! Stories of Challenge and Inspiration from the Front Lines of Economic Recovery”

In this theatrical piece, commissioned by the Opportunity Agenda, Rha Goddess lifts up the voices of those most impacted by the current economic crisis.

OPTIONAL MIAMI MURAL & ART TOUR 4 pm

Check out Miami’s vibrant art scene by touring the murals and other cultural sites of Little Havana and Wynwood with an experienced local tour guide from Urban City Tours. See the work of such influential artists as Shepard Fairey and Ryan McGinness as well as murals by local Miami artists. The tour bus will pick up at the Four Seasons at 4 pm on Saturday November 10 and return you to the hotel in time for dinner.

VOICE AND INFLUENCE: KATIE ORENSTEIN, THE OP ED PROJECT

Katie Orenstein, Founder and Director of The OpEd Project will lead us in a training on Expertise and Credibility. In this interactive presentation Orenstein will summarize recent scholarship, share observations and raise questions generated by The OpEd Project’s work with over 5,000 women experts from all over the world — about why marginalized voices and women in particular tend to write themselves out of the story, and how to redress this brain drain.

WDN CAMP: UN-CONFERENCE SESSIONS

This is where the official agenda ends, and you are charged with making one up! Back by popular demand, un-conference sessions are member-led and create space for members to share their expertise and plan their work for the coming year. A sign-up form for those interested in organizing an un-conference session will be available to registered conference attendees in September. Meeting rooms for these sessions are limited and sign-ups are first-come, first-served.
