THE CRUISE LINE INDUSTRY

Since the early seventies, the cruise line industry has experienced the largest growth of all sectors of the travel industry and it is still growing stronger than ever! New luxury liners are being built every year to accommodate the demand of travelers.

Passengers agree that cruise holidays provide the most convenient way to take a vacation and often represent the best value for money.

This comes as no surprise, as almost every cruise ship has a number of restaurants, bars, nightly entertainment, gyms, swimming pools, spas and more.

All activities are usually included in the price of holiday packages, allowing the passengers to relax and enjoy the luxury instead of having the worry of constantly booking into different hotels and confirming transport at every destination.

Holiday packages, cruising locations and activities aboard vary from company to company and ship to ship. Some cruise holidays are specifically designed for the mature travelers enjoying the family atmosphere, others for thrill seeking singles with a desire for fun and excitement.

Cruise holidays also vary greatly in price. Certain 50-day world voyages can cost up to $30,000 and sail the world from one continent to another. However, the most common and popular five or seven day cruises are very affordable and can be enjoyed at anytime, anywhere in the world.

The most frequented destinations are: the Caribbean, South Pacific, South-East Asia or Europe, some costing as little as $500 for 5 nights. These are truly the best fun and excitement holidays that money can buy.

The popularity of cruising creates a great demand for bigger and better ships, and of course these need to be staffed by a massive number of staff members, attending to every requirement and wish of the passenger.

An average cruise ship capable of accommodating approx. 1,400 passengers usually requires a staff of over 450 people. The variety of staff aboard a vessel can best be compared with the type and quantity of staff operating in an average five star hotel, requiring anybody from a piano player to an aerobics instructor.

Cruise ships provide the widest range of positions available, whether your previous experience is in hospitality, service or retail, you can surely utilize this

expertise aboard a cruise ship. Even doctors, nurses, photographers and beauticians are part of the usual Crew.

Because most cruise vessels are registered in foreign (tax free) countries other than the USA (for example), they do not have to comply with the USA employment regulations, and are allowed to employ an ensemble of international staff.

In a few cases, this results in most low skilled positions such as kitchen-hands, cleaners, etc., being exclusively filled with low paying staff from either Indonesia, Philippines or Mexico.

However, due to the fact that most passengers are English speaking, there is a need to have a English speaking staff for any positions that involve communication and contact with passengers.

Just to name a few, casino and bar staff, entertainers, DJ’s, diving instructors, gift-shop sales people, social hostesses and many other positions are filled by English speaking staff from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Philippines or South Africa.

The following section lists and describes positions and their duties in four different departments on an average cruise ship. The amount of staff per department varies greatly from vessel to vessel and company to company. (EG.: some smaller cruise ships may not require gift-shop sales people or aerobics instructors, while others do.)

HOSPITALITY AND SERVICE POSITIONS

PURSERPursers are in charge of establishing and coordinating the hospitality expenses and budgets, often working in conjunction with the managers of hospitality and other service departments assuring a smooth day-to-day running of the financial aspect of those departments. Pursers are also responsible for the customer service, and efficient service. On major cruise ships, pursers are also in the ranks of senior officers. NOTE: Some kind of qualification in accountancy or hospitality management is preferred, as is previous work experience in hospitality. Many pursers have, however, started as assistant pursers, with the necessary qualification, but not necessarily the relevant work experience

ASSISTANT PURSERStarting out as an assistant purser presents an interesting career possibility, as most assistant pursers begin their employment with the end result in mind - to become a senior purser or a purser. The duties of the assistant purser are highly varied, performing a number of roles from department to department as required. They fulfill most of all administrative, clerical and even secretarial duties. NOTE: Secretarial and/or clerical skills or hospitality or customer service experience are usually the only requirement for employment. Possibility of promotion is as good as with any on-shore company.

HOSPITALITY MANAGERBesides always working in conjunction with the purser to maintain a steady budget for food and beverages, the hospitality manager is generally responsible for the quality & service standard of the entire hospitality department and staff. Constantly solving problems, and making sure that all of the passengers expectations are met 110%. NOTE: Experience in hotel or restaurant management is essential, however a hospitality management degree with any hotel or restaurant experience is considered.

BARTENDERBartenders answer to the Hospitality Manager and are exclusively responsible for cleanliness and quality of service in a particular bar or restaurant they are working in. The duties are relatively similar to any on-shore bar or restaurant.NOTE: Previous work experience in a bar, coffee lounge club or restaurant is a must. Drink mixing or silver service experience is preferred. Individuals sporting a “happy face” should apply.

BAR STEWARDBar Stewards answer to the Bartender. They mainly serve drinks, maintain stock control and assist wherever required. NOTE: Bar tending experience is essential, however a charismatic personality is more Important than work experience.

COCKTAIL MIXER Should have either a Cocktail mixing certificate or relevant work experience. Professional Cocktail Mixers are always in demand. Working as a Cocktail Mixer is probably the best position behind the bar. In some cases the duties also involve stock control, maintenance and cleaning of necessary mixing equipment.NOTE: Bartenders who are keen to learn and have a good knowledge of Drink Mixing Should apply.

CHEFMust be qualified and preferably with some work experience. Best employment opportunities for this position would be with domestic cruise companies. NOTE: Only highly experienced professionals with a broad knowledge of international cuisine should apply.

WAITER / WAITRESSWaiters onboard of major ships can further be divided into Drink Waiters, Dining room Waiters and Restaurant Waiters. All the positions are the same as in any other onshore bar or restaurant.NOTE: Previous work experience as a waiter is preferred, otherwise same as for “Bar Steward” positions - keep smiling! Silver Service Experience is a major advantage.

BEDROOM STEWARDResponsibilities of a Bedroom Steward are similar to a room service attendant in a hotel. Duties include changing bed linen, cleaning and also catering for any other room service requirements passengers make. It is a tiring position, involving many hours a day. Bedroom Stewards tend to work every day for the duration of the cruise. NOTE: Some room service work experience is desirable. Other than that no special requirements are necessary.

GIFT SHOP SALES PERSONEvery major Cruise ship contains an endless number of specialty boutiques, ranging from souvenirs and clothing to Jewelry and sunglasses. Most are open for up to 16 hours a day. Sales people are hired on their experience, preferably in specialty stores. Many of the positions available are filled through concessionaires. It is best to apply direct to them, as they keep references with relevant experience for up to six months.NOTE: The better sales person you are the more dollars you’ll make - as most gift shop sales people work on flat percentage commission and weekly bonuses.

PHOTOGRAPHERSame as Videographers, the salary pretty much depends on commission and tips, which are generally quite generous - if you are good at selling your services. A great eye to capture that kodak moment should be your biggest asset, along with a very persistent personality.NOTE: An extensive list of assignments or examples of previous work should be enclosed when applying to the Concessionaires or major Cruise Line Companies.

IT PERSONNELWith the fast development of the internet, intranet and other heavily integrated softwares on board of modern cruise liners, there has been an increased demand for IT personnel on board and on shore. They are responsible for implementation & testing of softwares ranging from Accounting to Navigational. Their duties also include the maintenance of the mainframe computers and intranet on board to assure smooth sailing of information from department to department and boat to shore communication.NOTE: A degree or a diploma in Information technology or programming is a must. All IT personnel should be applying direct to the major Cruise Line Companies.

VIDEOGRAPHER As an increasing number of Cruises offer wedding or honeymoon packages to their clients, there has been an increased demand for semi-professional video-makers to capture the special moments. Video makers must not only be creative, but good sales people. The more clients they obtain, the more cash they earn. It is a great position, and anybody with photography or wedding video production background should apply.NOTE: When applying, be sure to include a show reel of your previous work! Hiring is usually done through Concessionaires, same as for Photographers!

DECKHAND Duties Range from docking the vessels to basic maintenance, painting, etc. Some deckhands also assist with the set up of the general recreational areas of the ship. They may also perform duties such as setting up the deck chairs, sun beds, etc.NOTE: The position does require plenty of common sense and strength is a must for this physically demanding position. Previous trade (carpenter, painter, fitter) experience is a major advantage.

ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVITY POSITIONS

CRUISE DIRECTOR / ASSISTANT CRUISE DIRECTORVery much a mix of creative and administrative duties, the Cruise Director is responsible for all entertainment on a vessel, including creating, coordination, auditioning and budgeting dance and cabaret or music performances and sometimes even working out the cinema program and schedules. Most Cruise Directors are ex-entertainers themselves, who worked their way up from junior positions in the Entertainment Department. NOTE: Ideal way to start climbing the ladder to this position is to apply for junior “Assistant Cruise Director” Positions within the Entertainment Dep. An applicant must have a cheerful personality, with a great eye for detail. Drama students, entertainers, DJ’s or people with public relations experience are best suited for this position. However no specific experience is necessary!

CRUISE STAFFAre always on hand for Passengers, to socialize with and engage in all Passenger related activities, from playing games to chatting with them during special dinners and parties organized by the Cruise Director. A member of a cruise staff should have vast general knowledge and a high degree of intellect, as he or she is the front representative for the cruise ship and the company itself. NOTE: Friendly individuals with enthusiastic personalities are best suited for this position. Also ideal for university students, when taking a yearlong break from further studies.

HOSTESS / HOSTSlightly more specific than cruise staff positions, the general concern of a host is to help coordinate lunches, dinners or any other activity in the hospitality department, always greeting passengers, briefing them on the next port of call, and generally acting in the public relations capacity. Being a host/hostess is one of the most mentally demanding positions on a ship. NOTE: Just the thought of having to be cheerful for 10-12 hours is exhausting in itself. Therefore only the extroverted can meet and handle the pace and demands of this position.

GENTLEMAN HOSTSSingle men over the age of 50, exclusively fill these Positions, to act as social partners for dance and other related activities with single mature female passengers. These positions do not offer a pay, but a chance to travel the world for free! An ideal Gentleman host should be familiar with a number of dancing styles and be prepared to rock the nights away on the dance floor. It’s a tough job, but someone has got to do it! NOTE: concessionaires “LAURETTA BLAKE’s WORKING VACATION” exclusively hire them.

CASINO MANAGER / DEALERS / STAFFThe above positions are by far the “ultimate positions” for a new comer to the cruise industry. Majority of Casino Dealers like to transfer from ship to ship and region to region, traveling the globe and experiencing all exotic destinations from port to port. The only requirement is of course casino experience, for managers up to five years and for dealers up to two years and proficiency in a minimum of three games. Casino staff generally looks after the poker machines or work as cashiers. A minimum of two years of related experience is also generally required. NOTE: It is quite easy to obtain a dealer’s license and work experience in a major casino in any capital city, and definitely worth it, as the employment opportunity working on a cruise ship offers the best perks EG.: set salary and lots of days off - every time a ship is in port.

PRODUCTION MANAGER (theatrical)As in the theatre or music staging A Production Manager’s responsibilities lie within the overall look and sound of the staged production. Cruises have a great number of different productions ranging from musical performances to cabaret set-up, each requiring specially designed lighting & sound. Production Managers applying for this position should be familiar with both old and new equipment capabilities and techniques in stage setting & design. This is a highly professional position and only persons with experience in the field should apply. NOTE: A great number of cruise ships sub-contract Production Managers. Applications should generally be forwarded to the Entertainment Director and/or Entertainment Department.

ENTERTAINERMagicians, Comedians, Singers, Cover bands and dancers all fit the shoes of an entertainer. Whatever your act is, you must keep it as broad as possible - in order to entertain majority of the passengers. The type and Style of acts hired vary greatly from ship to ship and company to company. Mature age cruises would generally hire conservative type of big band entertainment. Family oriented cruise would consider acts ranging from magicians to cover bands and comedians. Entertainers should have a presentable press kit, which should include a proposed profile of acts, photos, demo tapes etc. NOTE: Majority of cruise ships hire their entertainers through Entertainment CONCESSIONAIRES and talent agents ...

DISC JOCKEYSame as for Entertainers, Disk Jockeys must be familiar with and capable to predict the music tastes of the type of cruise that they are on. The clientele predetermines their styles of music. For singles cruises, a DJ with nightclub experience is ideal to cater for the current music trends. And of course for mature age cruises, quite the opposite. When hired, DJ’s are generally contracted for anywhere between six to twelve months. NOTE: When applying for a position a current audio - sample tape might be required.

EXCURSION OFFICER / STAFFAlso known as “Shorex”, Excursion Officers brief passengers on pre-organized tours and attractions. They organize shore transport, coordinate and many times supervise the tour and passengers. As one might guess they work only when in port, but unfortunately this is far from the truth, they are very busy people on board. Making tour presentations, handing out information on new destinations and drumming up the tour sales. Great communications skills are a must, as they also liaise with bus & tour companies regarding bookings and schedules and handle all passenger related issues while offshore. NOTE: Experience in the travel industry is a definite advantage and patience is a must when considering for this position. For Excursion Staff, patience and organizational skill is desirable, however no specific experience necessary!

PERSONAL CARE AND SERVICE POSITIONS

BEAUTICIAN/COSMETICIANS Qualified Beauticians and Cosmeticians work on-board salons where the pace can be pretty hectic as a lot of passengers request anything from facial masks to pedicures and manicures. These positions are definitely more exciting on-board the ship than on-shore, as every passenger brings in a great aura of excitement with them. NOTE: Hiring Procedures for these positions same as on-shore. Concessionaires supply majority of the staff to cruise companies. Competition is pretty slim so chances for the right person are pretty good.

HAIRDRESSERAll major Cruise ships have Hairdressing Salons on board. Some are exclusive; others share facilities with Beauticians or Cosmetician. Work is generally hectic and pay is a mix of Salary and Commission based with tips on top. Most Hairdressing salons are generally open between mid-morning til late evening, sometimes up to 8:oo PM. NOTE: At least two years experience is generally required, accompanied with the necessary qualifications. There are not many Hairdressers applying for these positions so chances for the right person are pretty good.

YOUTH COUNSELOR / NANNY Cruises specializing in family holiday packages employ a number of nannies, to participate in activities with children aged anywhere between 2 to 16. Mostly filled by females, the position can be very rewarding for those who love kids. It is also true to say that the position usually involves long hours and pretty much every day for the duration of the cruise. Australian nannies in particular are in high demand, because of their reputation as being very diligent and patient with kids! NOTE: Patience is a virtue in this position. Some nanny experience is essential, but just like with normal nanny positions is not always required.

NURSEEach Major Luxury Cruise ship, catering for a massive crowd of passengers requires at least one Doctor and Two Nurses. Considering the amount of Crew and passengers on board, accidents can and do happen. Anything from slipping on a wet deck to tummy aches is always attended to by the Nurses and in more serious cases the Doctor accompanies them.NOTE: Hiring Procedures for these positions are as follows: Cruise Companies do require that the Nurses are qualified and registered and in some cases with at least two years experience in an Emergency ward is preferred.

TRANSPORT COORDINATOR Cruise packages that involve flights to or from ports, either at beginning or completion of a cruise, require the organizational skill of a Flight & Transport reservations coordinator, who is solely in charge of confirming or rescheduling flights or other means of transportation for passengers. A background in ticketing or flight reservation is preferred.NOTE: ex-travel agents with relevant experience, or individuals with great organization and communication skills generally fill these positions. It can be a tough job, but the more organized you are the more free time you will end up with.

SPORTS AND ACTIVITY POSITIONS

PERSONAL TRAINEREvery Major Cruise has a number of Personal Trainers, whose expertise stretches well above the simple knowledge of general gym or aerobic workout. They are licensed professionals offering practical and theoretical advice on anything from nutrition to tailor made cardiovascular workouts to fit any individual. Personal Trainers generally mingle with passengers in order to get them involved in the sports activities. NOTE: Besides being fit and highly energetic, one should have formal degree in sports medicine or sports education and a few years practical work experience in a gym and/or fitness center. Many Personal Trainers have also first worked as Fitness Instructors; it seems to be the ideal stepping-stone.

FITNESS INSTRUCTORDuties are similar to those of a Personal Trainer, but not as specific. There are a number of Fitness Instructors who generally lead aerobics or gym workout classes a few times a day, and others who specialize in dance, yoga, or even aqua- aerobics. The daily routines of a Fitness Instructor will vary greatly, depending on the Cruise Company she/he works for. Some are specifically designed for passengers with fitness and water sports in mind. NOTE: A couple of years of related work experience is desired, but no formal training is required. A First Aid Certificate should be completed before applying.

MASSEUSEBeing a Masseuse can be a tiring, demanding but profitable position. Everybody loves to relax when on a holiday, especially on a cruise, and what better way to relax those muscles than with a firm massage after a workout. A major cruise ship might employ up to three masseuses, working around twelve hours a day, to cater for passenger’s demands. NOTE: As with Fitness Instructors, a couple of years work experience is expected.

WATER SPORTS INSTRUCTORGenerally supervising all water related activities including snorkeling, swimming in the pool, and on large vessels even assisting and working in conjunction with the diving instructor. Many of these positions are filled with experienced water-sports enthusiasts with lifeguard experience, from a local surf club. NOTE: With a First Aid Certificate in your hand your chances of employment will double.

DIVING INSTRUCTORAs the title suggests, Diving Instructors are qualified certified professionals, assisting and training passengers with basic and advanced skills in Scuba diving. Some Cruise packages include a certified diving course for passengers. Especially in the Pacific and Caribbean. A First Aid and CPR Certificate along with the other necessary qualifications is a must. NOTE: Every capital city in Australia is offering Diving courses up to the level of Instructor, and most of them offer job assistance to their students, as they are often approached by Cruise Companies.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM CRUISE SHIP EMPLOYMENT

PAY, COMMISSIONS AND TIPSOne could say that most of the common positions on board, are divided into three following payment categories:

SET SALARY - Set Salaries vary on position and sometimes nationality. Staff from the UK, USA, Australia, NZ or S’pore will generally fill better positions and command better salaries than citizens from Mexico or Philippines. The amounts also marginally vary from company to company and ship to ship, depending on the class of clientele. SET SALARY POSITIONS generally include Nurses, Production Managers, DJ’s, Entertainers, Shore tour Staff, Sport Instructors, etc.

TIPS - BASED EARNINGS - On nearly all cruises, passengers are generally informed and aware of the fact that tipping is common and expected. As a general rule of thumb they tip about US$2.00 - 3.00 per person per day to Dining room Waiters, Bar Stewards, Room Service staff, etc. Other hospitality staff such as normal Waiters or Busboys can expect generally about half of the above mention amountTIPS - BASED EARNERS generally include most hospitality staff working in a position of providing direct service to passengers.

COMMISSION BASED EARNINGS - Are usually received by staff providing a service to passengers. Photographers, Hairdressers, Gift shop Sales people all mostly work on a certain commission. The more passengers the Photographer encourages into having their picture taken, the more commission he/she will earn.

Gift shop Sales people also rely on plenty of sales, whether it would be in clothing, jewelry or souvenirs. The good news is that all passengers on a cruise, like to spend freely on whatever their heart desires, a great number of honeymooners or couples celebrating their anniversaries, love to surprise each other with expensive gifts of jewelry and other items. COMMISSION BASED EARNERS - Are Photographers, Gift shop Sales People, Masseurs, Cosmeticians, Hairdressers, etc.

The exact amount of money you will earn depends on a large number of factors that will affect this figure. There are two main factors; the position you will work in & whether this position is commission, salary or tips based.

Once you are hired and sign your employment contract – the cruise company will give you a better idea about what you can expect to earn. (It will also depends on your responsibilities & length of contract EG. Nurses can naturally expect to make more than Youth Counselors and DJ’s generally more than Waiters, etc.) One should keep in mind that this is your “take home pay”, because the company pays for all your accommodation and board. However, how much you’ll SAVE - depends on YOU, naturally if you venture out on shopping sprees in every port you will not save as much as someone who budgets themselves and does not spend above their allocated Bar allowance.

SPECIAL BENEFITS - BAR ALLOWANCE!To encourage crew members to mix and socialize with passengers during their time off, a bar allowances of up to eighty dollars per month is provided on some ships. Needless to say crew members always take an advantage of this and spend it to the last dollar. The thing one should remember is that the prices of drinks on board are in the similar range as in hotels or clubs on shore, therefore it can get pretty damn expensive is you intend to watch the sunset every night, with a glass of champagne in your hand. Also note that bringing your own alcohol on board is strictly prohibited on most Ships.

ROOM AND BOARD Room and board is at no expense to the employee. The choice of meals is usually pretty much the same as the passengers, however all meals are eaten in the crew members quarters. (Separate from passengers, usually in the lower decks)

The Accommodation standard varies greatly according to ship and position. It could be multiple, double or single, but very compact in size. As accommodation on Cruise ship is more expensive on the higher levels, these are strictly reserved for the passengers. Crew members accommodation is always on the lover decks, in some cases, below the water level.

Furthermore, most crew members are grouped separately into particular sections, depending on their department, sex and in some cases nationality. (Mexicans would generally live on a different deck than Americans or Australians, and Entertainers would be in a separate section than Hospitality Staff)

INSURANCEWhile under the employ of the ship, the company generally provides Medical coverage. However, in most cases this does not include dental or optical services. You should find out specifically as to what the situation is and alternatively organize your own “dental or optical” medical cover / insurance.

WORK UNIFORMSWork Uniforms and laundering of them are provided for nearly all staff on most cruise ships. However, for certain positions you might be advised to bring at least a pair of black pants or skirt, shoes and white long sleeve shirts and black bow ties. Companies, depending on their size, always provide jackets or vests and laundering of them. You will be specifically told what to bring when hired.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONSPrior to acceptance for work, most companies require that you pass a full physical examination which generally includes chest X-Rays and urinalysis. It is strongly advised that you take your own tests with a doctor in Australia before departing. It is not as expensive as doing it in Miami and definitely more convenient getting it done through your family doctor. Also don’t forget to check with your employer or doctor whether you require any immunization shots!

VACATIONSVacations vary from company to company, but are generally approved after nine months. Some Companies Provide a return flight home after a non-stop one-year service. A notice of up to 5 weeks could be required, requesting the length and start of vacation date.

WHEN ACCEPTED FOR WORKWhen accepted for work, a “Letter of Employment” shall be sent to you, this letter serves a double purpose:

It is Firstly your Guarantee of Employment,And Secondly for the purpose of Obtaining the Required VISA, (EG: for USA, the “C1 & D1” Visa). For visa requirements with other countries, check with the appropriate consulate.

This visa is basically a visa that allows you to enter the country where you will be joining your ship, for that purpose, and that purpose only. It is NOT a work visa as such, as work visas are not a requirement to work on Cruise Ships.

VISA REQUIREMENTSSince majority of the Cruise Companies listed in this guide hire their staff through the USA, this following visa information applies for USA ONLY. For updated visa information for other countries, please contact the Consulate of the country you wish to obtain visa for. IN GENERAL - As already mentioned, most cruise ships are registered in foreign countries, other than the USA and therefore US Employment regulations do not apply.

VISA REQUIRED - Crew members of any nationality other than U.S., generally require the “C1 & D1” type visa, which allows them to enter the USA to join a ship.

Once you have been accepted for work, and received your “Letter of Employment” you can apply for your visa. If any other visa or work permits are required, your employer should be able to assist you with any requirements.

GETTING THERE WHEN HIREDOnce you have successfully found employment, organized your visa, etc., it is up to you to get to the destination where you will resume employment on a certain date.

In most cases, cruise companies buy air tickets in bulk and therefore can furnish you with the flight tickets, this is something that will be specified in your contract.

Once you arrive at your destination in the US, Miami for example, you would have instructions to book into a particular hotel.

Once in the hotel, upon presentation of your passport & Letter of Employment, the company would generally pay for all expenses. (This of course varies greatly from company to company and country to country)

DO NOT FORGET BEFORE YOU SET SAIL

Planning to leave your home for up to 12 months is not an easy task.

There are things to pack, organize and do before your departure. It is ideal to make a checklist of anything and everything that has to be done, packed or prepared.

The following are just a few of the things you should keep in mind:

PASSPORT - make sure it is valid at least for another 12 months;

TRAVEL INSURANCE - also find out exactly what insurance the employer will cover you with;

CREDIT CARDS - for emergencies, if you don’t have one, apply for one or at least get a visa debit card (so you can use your own funds) When you are packing, try to keep clothing or personal items to a minimum. Remember, you should be able to purchase anything in any port you visit, whether it is clothing, toiletries or other items. Also make sure you let your parents or friends know where and how you can be contacted while overseas. Also don’t forget Sunglasses, your camera, toiletry items and a calculator for working out exchange rates while shopping.

If you are taking any medication, make sure you consult your doctor and request an adequate amount to take with you. If applicable, a letter from your doctor concerning any unusual treatments or conditions you are undertaking or suffering from should be lodged with the Doctor on board - just in case of an emergency!

Wearers of prescription glasses are advised to bring a spare pair. Glasses do break and it is wiser and cheaper to get a replacement pair done in your country than overseas.

WHERE AND HOW TO APPLY

APPLYING DIRECT TO CRUISE LINE COMPANIESThere are two ways of applying for cruise ship employment, directly to Cruise Line Companies or to Concessionaires. When applying direct to cruise companies you can refer to the CRUISE LINE COMPANIES DIRECTORY in the later section of this guide.

There you will find information on most necessary aspects, such as what type of cruise holidays various companies offer, how many and what size vessels they have in their fleet, where they generally cruise and what positions you can apply for and where.

You should find this information useful and helpful, when deciding on which companies you would like to apply for employment.

Some applicants are interested in working in a specific location, whereas others wish to apply for a particular position, and the cruising location is of no importance to them.

The later is advisable, simply because once you get your foot in the door by getting a job, you will have a chance to apply for transfers to other vessels cruising in other locations or on different itineraries.

As in any other industry, the hardest part is breaking in and once you’re in, the world of opportunity is wide open. Some crew members change companies or ships every year, wanting to experience a new culture in a particular region, while others stay with the first ship and work their way up to better positions.

APPLYING TO CONCESSIONAIRESWhat are they you ask? Concessionaires are a completely separate entity from Cruise Companies, however they both hire for jobs on board.

To give you an example as to how a Concessionaire operates would be to simply compare them to a temp agency that supplies permanent or casual staff to a great number of companies.

In the Cruise Line Industry, nearly all Photographers, Diving Instructors, Gift shop Sales People and many other positions are filled through and supplied to the Ships by Concessionaires. A few of them even own their businesses aboard the vessels and therefore do the hiring themselves.

The usual type of this business would be a gift shop chain, diving school or beauty salon, working on the vessel, but as a separately staffed entity.

In the CONCESSIONAIRES DIRECTORY, you will find out which positions you can apply for with a particular concessionaire. Most of them are exclusive to particular areas, such as only supplying entertainers, photographers, and dining room or casino staff.

They hire a lot of staff and one should not hesitate to contact them and register with the one that is applicable you your expertise. (EG.: do not bother to register with a Casino Concessionaire, if you are not a licensed Dealer)

Most will send you an application form to register, which you can fill out and send back with your application package. (Photo, letter and resume)

They keep most resumes on file and will contact you when applicable. They are always out on a lookout for sharp, courteous and hardworking staff.

BE INFORMED - TO IMPRESSWith each application package you send off, make the extra effort to mention, if only briefly, a few things you know about the company or the cruise packages they offer.

Having done your so-called investigation as part of the application process will make you look well informed and most importantly professional.

Whether you attend a Cruise Information evening, usually organized by travel agents, or simply pick up and flip through a few Cruise Brochures, you will expand your specific knowledge in this area and get a better idea as to what to expect from employment aboard a cruise ship.

APPLY FOR SPECIFIC POSITIONSThe Importance of targeting a specific position, depending on your past work or educational experience or achievement, is of major importance and should go without saying.

Application letters not mentioning specific positions are seen only as curious letters of inquiry. So if you are an experienced waiter or bar person, apply for those specific positions and not just anything aboard a vessel!

Just like any other Industry, this one also has its ups and downs.

Some people can’t handle the long hours, confined and limited spaces, or long separations from family or friends.

Any of these elements, constantly keep the employment turnover at a high level and present a never-ending opportunity for new comers to enter the Industry.

Depending on your expectation and the lifestyle you wish to lead. These factors might or might not bother you at all.

THE PROACTIVE APPROACH The facts that Cruise Companies hardly ever advertise for staff makes them receive a great number of applications every week all around the year.

Most applicants that are not well informed or persistent will generally end up in the application bin, never hear from the company and give up their original intention of employment on a Cruise Ship.

This naturally decreases the amount of competition you are up against, especially if you are a PROACTIVE person.

Persistence and timing are the two major factors that your success depends on. Luck can boost your chances, but with persistence and a good game plan, you can virtually create your own luck and get hired.

The important thing for you to know is to market yourself better than the guy or girl next door. Send impressive resumes, follow them up with phone calls and find out the name of the person that does the hiring for your chosen position.

Keep in touch, send a Personal Thank you letter and always let them know of any changes. If you have just completed a Cocktail mixing or a Casino Dealers course and, you will double or triple your chance of getting hired as well as the quality of positions you can now get hired for.

BETTER JOBS WITH EXTRA QUALIFICATIONSThe smile, the energy and pleasant personality are always the prime qualities that companies look for when hiring personnel, and they should be stressed out to them in any possible way.

Whether it’s the happy face on the enclosed application photo, or a pleasant tone on the phone, the managers will recognize these qualities, and separate you from the rest of the pile.

Of course having a specifically related work experience or educational achievement to go with your application for a chosen position increases your chances of landing that job.

Any, no matter how small experience or quality you have can be of major advantage to your application.

Mentioning the simple fact that you’ve had public speaking experience, worked under pressure in a fast food chain or served as a lifeguard should not be disregarded.

In addition, going the extra mile by obtaining extra qualifications or certificates such as First Aid or Silver Service Dining can make you a prime candidate. (Some of these courses can be completed for under a hundred dollars in a matter of days)

Even aiming further by completing a Casino Dealers license or completing a Diving instructors course can be the ultimate base for a start of a new and exciting career. Why aim too low.

Do your self a favor and seriously consider all the options available to you.

APPLICATION PACKAGE & PROCESS

OVERVIEW OF APPLICATION PACKAGEWhen you are compiling and designing your application, you need to include two things:

1. A Cover letter, 2. A Resume with an attached photo and if you wish an additional 10 by 8 inch, full

length photo.

Entertainers should send out their usual press kit with photos and samples of performances on video or audio tapes. (Which ever is applicable)

It is a good idea to print both your resume and letter on the same style and color of heavy bond paper, generally available at any stationery store.

INTRODUCTION LETTERIntroduction, or also known as cover letters play a major part of your application package. They present you with an opportunity to individually express yourself, highlight your qualities and abilities.

When writing a cover letter, remember to keep it brief and tightly written. Be specific about what position you are applying for and don’t forget to mention why.

Try to keep the letters to a half or three quarters of a page. Whether you choose to type it or hand write it is up to you.

Typed letters are common, but a neatly handwritten letter can be very effective and unique. If handwriting a cover letter, try if you can, to write it on your printed letterhead which includes your contact details, as it adds a professional yet quite personal touch to your overall application.

RESUMEA great resume is the most important part of your application; it communicates your expertise, qualifications and talent to a prospective employer.

It is a strong selling tool and you should use it to its full advantage. The amount of styles and layouts of resumes is countless, however a simple one or two page, well structured resume works the best.

Don’t forget the employer will contact you for further information and specifics if necessary.

Even if you already have a resume, with the importance of applying for specific positions in the Cruise Line Industry, you should tailor make it and rewrite accordingly.

Try to highlight only relevant work experience, qualifications and skills, in order to emphasize your application for a particular position. Even if your employment history is limited, you can interpret your strengths and qualities by listing your abilities.

Remember it is the personality and right attitude that is important for employment on cruise ships, not necessarily the qualifications or experience.

Make sure it is simple, effective and without spelling errors. Always have someone to double check it for you and make corrections form their suggestions.

REFERENCESBe sure to include a couple of references, work or character. With work references, make sure you choose the ones that are relevant to the position you are applying for.

Whether you worked in the hospitality or service industry, make sure the reference describes and complements your people skills, as this is the most important element that Cruise Companies look for.
